MAP Testing Results and Information Continued

Curriculum Chat:

Parents, your child will be coming home with his/her reading and math Measurement of Academic Progress or

MAP scores on Friday. The following are a few frequency asked questions when trying to interpret the data.

What is a RIT score?

The RIT score is an equal interval scale, like feet and inches, which makes growth in learning easy to measure. RIT scores range from ap-

proximately 150-260. Students typically start at a RIT score of about 179-190 in third grade and progress to the 230-260 range by high

school.

How is percent and percentile different?

A percent explains how well the test taker did on the test. While a percentile rank explains how well a test taker did in comparison to the

other test takers in that same grade. For example, if the percentile score is a 53 that score means that particular student did as well or better

than 53% of the students who also took the particular assessment in that grade.

What is meant by the district average on the report?

This is the average RIT score of students in the same grade level at CIS. (There are no other schools in our district).

How was the norm grade level mean RIT score established?

NWEA, the developers of the MAP assessment conducted a study over from a test record pools of up to 10.2 million students attending

more than 23,500 public schools spread across 6,000 districts in 49 states. Rigorous procedures were used to ensure that the norms were

representative of the U.S. school-age population. Therefore, the grade level mean RIT score is based on US scores and students.

If the mean is established with US norms how do our students compare with International students?

Many international schools have their students sit the MAP tests and NWEA then provides the RIT scores from the international community

along with breaking them into the two associations Cayman International belongs to in education, AASSA and Tri-Association. The previous

page has the table of the scores of how CIS compares internationally and with our associations.

with Ceridwen F.

What are your favorite books? Why? -My favorite books are Life of Pi, Great Gatsby, and Catcher in the Rye. It sounds like I don’t read any books outside of school, but these books just happened to have themes and concepts that I really liked and connected with. However, it could be that I noticed the themes and concepts more since I had to since we studied them in school.

What is the greatest crisis we face as a world? -A crisis that we face today is the promotion of ignorance and bigotry. Whether it be on a smaller scale such as in schools, or on a great scale such as in government and politics, somehow in our world it is tolerated when it shouldn’t be.

What is your favorite movie and why? -My favorite movie is Like Crazy. It’s directed by Drake Doremus, my favorite director. I love the way his movies are so realistic. He uses amazing upcoming actors and actresses, and two of his movies, including Like Crazy, have soundtracks done by Dustin O’Halloran, a composer who I also really like.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Why? -If I could have any superpower, it would be teleportation so that I could go anywhere in the world whenever I wanted. The first places I would go would be to visit my friends that live in other places, and then I would go to all the places in the world that I’ve always wanted to visit.

If you could eat dinner with any 3 people (deceased or alive) who would they be? -Charles Bukowski, Kathe Kollwitz, and Sally Mann.

What are your plans after you graduate from CIS? -After I graduate from CIS I plan to go to art school, but I’m not sure yet what I’m planning on studying. I would like to study something that allows me to get a job that I actually enjoy, so that I don’t feel like it’s just a way for me to make money for eight hours a day. I want to feel like my job is actually a part of my life, not just a way to make money so I can enjoy the other parts of my life.

I was born in England, and on both my mom and dad’s side I’m British. I’ve lived in England and Cayman, and I’ve been living in Cayman for 13 years and only ever attended CIS. For the most part, I’m pretty easygoing, and try not to take life too seriously. If my friends are in a tough situa-tion, I always will try to help them de-stress. I love going out to the beach or for drives, but I can also enjoy staying in and watching movies. However, being laid back has its downsides, because I can tend to procrastinate a lot when it concerns things I’m not very passionate about.

rience you would like
