Cisco Wireless LAN Planning and Design Service for Healthcare

Creating a wireless LAN network to support mission-critical medical applications requires advanced designs and experienced deployment. In order to increase the efficiency and quality of patient care, this service provides planning and design for a mobile clinical workflow solution and includes activities that Cisco has identified as essential for success. These activities have particular emphasis on radio frequency (RF) design and architecture, which require careful attention due to the extreme challenges with equipment, radiation, and highly reinforced construction used in hospitals and other healthcare environments.

The Cisco Wireless LAN Planning and Design Service for Healthcare consists of the following nine activities:

● Wireless LAN architectural and security design

● Wireless LAN RF site assessment

● Wireless LAN detailed network design

● Cisco Wireless LAN Controller configuration

● Cisco Wireless Control System configuration

● Wireless LAN mobility services engine configuration

● Wireless LAN context-aware configuration

● Wireless LAN voice services configuration

● Wireless LAN postdeployment validation service

Wireless LAN Architectural and Security Design The first steps in deploying a secure wireless LAN solution are translating business application requirements into solution requirements and aligning those solution requirements to the multitude of technologies that are available. The wireless LAN expert uses a comprehensive set of methodologies that help you manage your technical and applications requirements while providing you with various architectural options. The first steps in deploying a secure wireless LAN solution are translating business application requirements into solution requirements and aligning those solution requirements with Cisco leading deployment practices. The wireless LAN expert then assesses architectural readiness and develops a high-level design, followed by reviewing and making necessary modifications to your implementation plan. Upon completion of these activities Cisco provides you with a high-level design document with recommendations.

Wireless LAN RF Site Assessment The packet loss and jitter requirements of voice over IP, the increased mobility of voice over wireless LAN (VoWLAN) handset users, and the desired ability to track location and state of your assets place demands on connection quality, coverage, and user expectations that are beyond those a of a typical wireless LAN data deployment. This assessment helps you determine your environment’s ability to deliver secure wireless LAN access in the desired coverage area. It helps you understand the current state of your network and future needs so you can make informed decisions about how to reliably predict coverage and call capacity and protect your wireless architecture. The assessment, which includes a site survey, enables Cisco to make recommendations for placement of access points, establishing their frequencies, antenna selections, and power and cabling specifications.

Wireless LAN Detailed Network Design A wireless LAN expert works with your staff to develop detailed plans and configurations. Design elements include the security infrastructure, IP addressing scheme, switching and routing infrastructure, network management infrastructure, and software image recommendations. Upon completion of the design, a low-level design plan is created and includes templates for controller configuration, security configuration settings, and switch configuration recommendations.

Cisco Wireless LAN Controller Configuration Within this activity we recommend code versions for the wireless LAN controllers, implement the recommended version of controller software, and configure the wireless LAN controller for your network. We will also assign access points to the required controller according to the design.

Cisco Wireless Control System Configuration A wireless LAN expert recommends code versions for the Cisco Wireless Control System (WCS), implements the recommended version of WCS, and configures the security policies and templates for your network. WCS scheduled tasks, user accounts, and logging are configured to match Cisco leading practice recommendations and the network requirements.

Wireless LAN Mobility Services Engine Configuration During this activity we recommend code versions for the Mobility Services Engine (MSE) and planned mobility service, implement the recommended version of the MSE, and import the configurations into WCS. We help you configure your secure Cisco secure access control servers (ACSs) and sample client devices and implement your wireless control system (WCS) and MSE. We provide onsite support for implementing your WCS and will configure wireless LAN controllers, policy provisioning, RF optimization, security monitoring, and customized fault settings.

Wireless LAN Context-Aware Configuration This activity provides onsite support for configuring your context-aware software, including RF tags, exciters, and chokepoints to help ensure the proper deployment and installation of software releases and updates and implementation. It also includes calibration of the MSE to improve location accuracy based on Cisco leading practices.

Wireless LAN Voice Services Configuration This activity provides onsite support to configure a voice over wireless LAN solution and wireless controllers, recommend device configuration, and integrate with your Cisco Unified Communications infrastructure. We work with you to help ensure the proper deployment based on Cisco leading practices and to validate accurate installation of software releases and updates. Implementation of the VoWLAN solution includes configuration of Call Admission Control (CAC) to help ensure quality of service (QoS), transparent mobility, and fast secure roaming over mobility groups and channel strategies to improve performance and user call experience.

Wireless LAN Postdeployment Validation Service This activity verifies that the system is operating in accordance with the design by surveying the RF environment, validating configurations, and reviewing general performance of the VoWLAN. In providing onsite and remote wireless LAN postdeployment validation, our team of specialists assesses coverage, measures interference, evaluates overall wireless LAN network capacity, and makes recommendations for improvement to help ensure optimal performance.
