Return onInvestmentOver the past three academic years, 799 bright, but underachieving high school seniors inthe Dallas region were given the opportunityto realize their potential. With CISDRsacademic and social support they remainedin school and graduated. CISDRs sta o dedicated pro essionals provided comprehensiveindividualized services and brought communityresources into schools to meet the needs o these high school graduates at the annual costo $500 per child. The $399,500 investedin these 799 students provides this return oninvestment: They will earn and contribute to Texas

economy approximately $7.3 million moreyearly than those who dropped out.

They will save taxpayers $19.9 million in thecosts associated with being incarcerated orone year.

They will save Texans $127 million in lost taxrevenues and increased costs in public health, crime and wel are payments each year.

I have never seen a program more e ective in directly addressing the needs o at-riskstudents. One has only to hear the testimonials o the students themselves as to what theCISDR program has done or them to be convinced that this program has truly been ali e-changing experience or these young people.William H. BEFORE CISDR: Was very bright, but lacked self esteem and confidence in her ability to graduate from high

school and go on to college. Lived with an older brother and mother. Had many dysfunctional family problems related to her fathers incarceration. Faced numerous barriers to staying in school as her family struggled to make ends meet.

Communities In Schools Dallas Region Campus professionals provided one-on-one academic

and social support, assistance with family issues, and preparation for the transition from highschool to college.

AFTER CISDR: Attended orientation at Texas Womens University where she will major in nursing. Found that she was not out of place in a college setting. Welcomed her fathers release from jail in time for her graduation Watched as her father personally thanked the CISDR staff for helping his family. Became the first in her family to go to college.

Bright Kids Literacy ProgramReading improvement phonics based program geared

towards at-risk students in frst through third grades.

Students are paired with a tutor or mentor one hour

per week to strengthen their reading skills by ocusing

on letter and sound identifcation, writing skills and

    reading comprehension.

In 2007-08 this one-to-one tutoring tool impacted

the reading skills o 137 students in 8 elementary

school sites. In training sta in the tutoring o basic

reading skills, CISDR will expand Bright Kids to 13

school sites that have historically shown readingscores in need o improvement.

Mobile TeamMobile Team consists o sta specializing in volatile

issues acing our students. Acting as rein orcement to

case management model o one-to-one relationship

building, the Mobile Team enhances that premise

by fnding common denominators among other like

minded children. In travelling rom school to school,

Mobile Team not only discovers trends in student

behaviors, but also seeks to help campus sta be

proactive in service planning. In 2007-08, campus

sta made over 300 requests or Mobile services,

with an overwhelming tendency or group services

in anger management, drug prevention and bullying.

As such, Mobile Team has launched a new curriculum

specifcally tailored to bullying behaviors among girls

this has already gained incredible support rom

campus and aculty alike, and will be expanded tomore schools in the upcoming school year.

Exxon Mobil GEMSMath, science, and technology program o ering

    unique classroom and experiential learning

opportunities to strengthen girls interest and skills

in these academic areas. Open to students at risk

o ailure in elementary and middle school 5 th to 8 th

grade. GEMS builds confdence and enthusiasm on the

subjects o math and science while studying careeroptions in these areas. It also helps to increase

    classroom participation.

During the 2007-08 school years, 113 girls

beneftted rom the hands on experience o GEMS,

culminating in two key events. In June, the GEMS

students participated in the 2 nd Annual Soap Box

Derby sponsored by the Plano Rotary. Not only did

CISDR students learn how to translate design into

practice, but came in 2 nd place. At the end o the

month, 10 CISDR GEMS participants who showed

exemplary per ormance took a trip to Austin, visiting

the state capitol and then onto SeaWorld San

    Antonio.

In 2008-09 GEMS will be expanded to an

elementary school to pilot how this initiative can be

translated into improving student per ormance earlier

    in their academic lives.

Wachovia Building LeadersWBL is targeted at elementary school students in the

4th and 5 th grade. It develops strengths and assets in

at-risk children to enable them to emerge as leaders in

the middle and high school years. The core curriculum

centers on cultivation six pillars o character,

    including trustworthiness, respect, responsibility,

airness, caring, and citizenship. Through experiential

activities, participants learn and practice leadership in

a meaning ul and authentic way.

Wachovia Building Leaders has impacted 5 school

campus sites this year, and plans to expand to two

more in 2008-09. In light o this years preparation

or the presidential election, 10 Wachovia students

completed a trip in June to Philadelphia, PA to ollow

up in their studies around the democratic process.

The Women o AT&T Every year, the Women o AT&T sponsor scholarships

or our college and career bound high school seniors.

This year 13 o 20 CISDR students won scholarships

to the college or technical school o their choice.

Students wrote essays on why they eel they would

best use this money towards their education. Winners

attended a luncheon with the scholarships providers

at the AT&T Building downtown Dallas.

It is personally satis ying to be able to witness the extraordinary impact that CISDR has on somany students. The ability o CISDR to reach out to over 420,000 at-risk students, and obtainthe results that they do, makes me very proud to be associated with such an important andsuccess ul organization.John Scott, Section Head, ExxonMobil Corporation and CISDR Board Member
