INFORMATION FOR THE PRESSCITIZEN JANE DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

Citizen Jane is about a time in Canadian military history when lesbians and gays were discharged purely for their sexual preference. They lost their careers, their relationships, and in some cases they lost their lives. They were never recognized for serving their country. And they deserved better. They deserved to be treated like every other soldier.

My lifelong goal as a film producer has been to shed light on injustices that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.

Citizen Jane is more than a film. It is a call to action. A call to action in a world where LGBT rights are still not universally acknowledged and people are still at risk for being who they are.

By contributing to our crowd funding campaign you are helping us to bring awareness to a larger, worldwide audience.

And I ask you to join me bringing a petition to the government to formally apologize to all LGBT soldiers who were discriminated against and victimized for over 25 years.

The time is now to bring this change to the front lines and we ask you to join us in this fight for equality. With Gratitude,Cari Green

LONG

The year is 1987.

Private Jane Cross boards a bus to the Canadian Forces Base, catching the eye of Major Corporal Maryann Kirk, as her fellow trainees discuss the current zero-tolerance policy on lesbians and gays serving openly. The ban has been in place for decades in the Canadian Forces, with countless soldiers and officers discharged during their military service, simply for being homosexual. Little does Jane know the military is waging a clandestine war on its own people, spying and searching for evidence of “immoral conduct”. No one is safe from the ceaseless scrutiny.

During a training exercise, Jane quickly establishes herself as a skilled leader, turning heads with her swagger and earning glances from Maryann, for more than her abilities on the battlefield. Jane also notices Maryann and begins to fantasize about her commanding officer, pouring forth her feelings in what she considers a safe outlet: her journal. She is smart enough to never mention Kirk by name, and writing down her growing feelings is a welcome release.

After one of her morning runs, Jane spots Private Toni Miles, who seems anxious and on edge. Jane suggests they go off base for the night and grab a drink. The two women meet up at a local country bar where Jane notices Maryann from across the room.

Mayrann and Jane find each other in the middle of the dance floor, but Kirk is quick to deny Jane’s request for something more and quickly leaves the bar.Jane can’t stop thinking about Maryann and begs Toni to return. Toni is worried that someone is going to catch them, but Jane doesn’t’ care. She needs to see Kirk, no matter what.

Jane and Toni go back to the country bar, but Maryann is nowhere to be found. About to call it quits, Kirk surprises Jane and shows up at her side, obliging when Jane asks if they can step outside. The two soldiers spark a fiery scene, exploding with passion and shattering the tension between them. They are both aware of the danger in their actions, but were they careful enough to avoid getting caught?

Later that week Jane enters her barracks and discovers her room has been turfed. Her clothes are strewn across the room, the locker torn apart and mattress overturned. Jane’s journal remains as the only proof of the amorous affair, which could also be her undoing.

Based on true accounts.

ACTOR BIOGRAPHIES

Alison Wandzura Master Corporal Maryann Kirk

Alison officially “came out of the closet” as an actor while completing her Commerce degree in Marketing at the University of Calgary. Upon moving to Vancouver in 2009 in pursuit of its more prolific film industry, she quickly discovered that she would no longer be auditioning for the heartwarming family shows that were the norm back home. Since trading in her wholesome flannel shirt for a slick black leather jacket that is a must for any actor in a market dominated by sci-fi and procedural drama, Alison has enjoyed working on projects such as Supernatural (CW), Motive (ABC), Bluff (CONVERG), Godzilla (Warner Bros) Package Deal (City

TV), and Stalkers (Lifetime). She is also a co-producer of Hyphae, an independent dramatic series currently in pre-production, that she hopes will cause people to examine important issues about the state of our world.

ACTOR BIOGRAPHIES

Aliyah O’Brien Private Toni Miles

Born in Victoria, B.C. to hippy parents who believed in a four hug a day minimum and fed her home made fruit leather for lunch, Aliyah O’Brien began setting the stage to become a working artist at the ripe old age of seven. She began by putting on plays for the neighbors in her friends basement and her first foray into the world of paid art centered around her beaded earring and dream catcher booth at the local Moss Street Market. Her entrepreneurial spirit and natural curiosity for anything art and expression-related soon led her to don sparkly leotards for figure skating, sashay in jazz shoes for dance, and barrel into the world of musical theatre. However, once Aliyah realized her beloved musical theatre aspirations would likely never materialize (due to the fact that she can’t actually carry a tune), the self-proclaimed

adrenaline junky set off to see the world armed with an attitude for adventure, and a bungee cord to jump off any bridge that dared cross her path. After several years of globe- trotting, Aliyah’s friend, Dave, challenged her to check out an acting class with him. She was instantly hooked on a new kind of adrenaline rush and she soon shifted gears to pursue a new adventure. She moved to Vancouver in 2007 to train as an actor, and booked her first audition on Chris Haddock’s acclaimed CBC series Intelligence. She followed up with roles on CW’s Supernatural, Showcase’s Ex’s and Oh’s, Syfy’s Eureka, CW’s Smallville and USA Network’s Psych. In 2010 Aliyah made her first debut as a series lead on the major network television comedy Men With Brooms on CBC.
