Netflix Jason shared a lot of personal information with us. And he said a lot of nice things. Through a series of questions we eventually arrived at the conclusion that we really don’t know anything about Jason and we can’t be sure it what he told us is true (even though we want to believe it :). The lesson here – we don’t share personal information online with people we don’t know. The conversations that follow this week will centre around being safe and responsible digital citizens.

After reading the novel Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl one of my kids suggested we watch the movie on NetFlix. So we decided to search NetFlix together to see if it was available. When we found Fantastic Mr. Fox is was listed as “Currently Unavailable”. My kids’ immediate reaction was to ask “why?” I told them I didn’t know know, but we could contact NetFlix to ask them. To my surprise the kids were shocked that we could contact NetFlix. So we talked about the fact that the people who create websites include information about how you can contact them. It is important to be able to answer questions that your reader’s have about your site. We compared Netflix to our blogs. We want other people to contact us to ask us questions about our learning, just like Netflix wants their customers to contact them if they have questions about the service Netflix provides its users. My kids thought that was really cool. The transcript of our conversation can be found here.

_____ is not really my friend because he is kind of rude. Tia is my friend because she always plays with me.

It is important for students to understand that when they post something online is it visible to everyone. Words can hurt even if they were not intended to be hurtful.

An experience like this can be turned into an opportunity for learning about digital citizenship as well as empathy.

Citizenship and Character

Collaborating with global learning partners teaches students that the world is made of people from many different cultures. Experiences like these teach acceptance, understanding, and global awareness.

Kindergarten students have enormous hearts and a great curiosity about the world around them. Through this TLLP project we have begun having our students share their thinking with the world. However, we are seeing that we need to do a better job of using our blog as a tool to bring the world to our students. This is our learning this year. We are setting the following goals for ourselves next year as digital learners:

- Set up a connection with a class in Northern Ontario to communicate with throughout the year. This will allow for many comparison conversations about our world and people.

- Create a character page for each trait. Each month work collaboratively to define the character trait and find examples to share through photos, stories, and videos.

- Create a connection with a family to bring an infant in throughout the year. This will created empathy for other living things and an awareness of how we grow. Track this on a page within our blog. (Formal organization: Roots of Empathy for facilitated discussions.)

We use our class blog to discuss ideas about Character Education and post about activities we’ve done in our Monthly Spirit Assemblies.

We wrote down our thoughts about the quote from the morning announcements.

We reflected on a recess issue by reading the book “Why?”. We put in on our blog as a reminder.

Students use their blogs to reflect on topics they are interested in and reflect on ideas from novels or non-fiction texts. .

Digital Citizenship http://edublog.amdsb.ca/myblograde/Mrs. Peters and Ms. Hodges collaborated to teach the

children a lesson on appropriate blog posts. The students co-created success criteria for blog comments. They then worked with a grade partner to practice creating proper posts.

Officer Stanley came into our school to talk to the grade three students about internet safety. The students asked very intuitive questions about using the internet and using their blogs appropriately.

For this task the students were asked to use Adobe Voice to create a video about what they wanted people to know for Earth Day. The students chose a topic, researched ideas and used the app to present what they found. It was their first time using the program and the results were amazing!!

Ms. Hodges’ and Mrs. Peters’ classes have demonstrated character by presenting an assembly on respect and sharing their respect movie on their blogs. As well, they displayed compassion by collecting food for the local food bank. The newspaper came to take pictures of the event and the group felt proud of their accomplishment.

A student that chooses to never verbally engage with other children is having an extended conversation with another student in their class all because of the blog!

A grade 2 student took the initiative to comment on a non-verbal peers’ blog in order to engage a particular student in conversation - and was successful.

For the student who chooses not to engage with others - this interaction with her peers may have never have occurred without the access of blogging for student communication.

For the student that sparked the conversation and persevered to continue it - this was a great opportunity for her to showcase her strength of character - may not have been captured without the blog.

One of my future goals is to use the character trait names when we brainstorm ideas and post them on our blog. Each of these posts suggests ideas from many of our character traits but they are not explicitly named.

Building Character in Grade 8

Next Character Building Project: Grade 8 students have been exploring the online world for many years now, and they are finding out about the digital footprint they have created in the process. When they Google their own identity, they will think about their behaviour and how they act online, as well as how they can improve their online presence (i.e. getting involved, positive experiences). This will not only be a safe practice for their safety (and their identity), but also improve their personal character to become or continue to be positive citizens within our society.

Student’s have been writing memoirs about significant experiences from their past. They are able to analyze their own memoirs (and their peers) and reflect on what they learned from those experiences. Next Steps: There is always a life lesson, but it involves critical thinking to find it, and in the end it would result in personal character building.

Students write Novel Responses that often define the specific character traits of their favourite character in the novel (as they relate to them).Next Steps: Ask students to choose their best character traits, and see if they are always putting them to good practice.

Citizenship in Grade 8

Students actively participated in Global Warming Case Studies that allowed them to understand the real-world problems that occur around us. It teaches them to care about the World they live in, and to take action if it is something they truly care about.

Student’s were introduced to Digital Citizenship and were asked to write about what it means to them. Their responses are on our class blog, similar to the one written below.

Character

In our class we have had many discussions centred around how to take care of ourselves and each other. The students have also been involved in several character building activities. As a result of these discussions and activities, some students in the class have independently blogged on this topic with great passion. It has led to some interesting follow-up discussions.

Citizenship:Earth Day

Earth Day was a perfect time for our class to brainstorm a list of ways that we can be kind to the Earth. We know the importance of taking care of our Earth as it is where we work and play everyday. Many of us are making little changes to our lives that are helping the earth, such as using the compost again at school. The Grade

2’s are taking care of our Earth...one step at a time!

Check out Brian’s Blog to hear his ideas on how we can be KIND to the Earth!

The Grade 2’s were eager to share their ideas about how they were going to be KIND to the Earth so we decided to record our writing on the app Recording Lite.

This was the first time we added a video to our blogs. The students were so excited to hear everyone’s ideas so we spent a class listening to our videos and then had fun commenting on them. This was a good way to let our classmates know what we learned. We had lots of ideas of how to take better care of our Earth.
