CITY SERVICE AS A City as a Service Last year PUSH joined UN Global Compact and UN World Urban Campaign as an associate partner, with the aim to extend its network and discuss, with a wider and international audience, our findings. It was quite interesting to see how our approach on tools and strategies to trigger urban innovation in marginal contexts was far from their view and we were really surprised noticing how curios they were about the results of our “unconventional” projects. So we applied to the Urban Thinkers Campus international call with the ambitious program of “City as a Service”: a double appointment to think, prototype and share all those digital solutions able to transform the urban spaces by changing services and citizens’ experience. The event will be made by two different appointments: the Intensive School in Erice in late September and the Urban Thinkers Campus, that will take place one week later in Palermo. caas.wepush.org We were selected and we are one of the 29 organizations selected world wide to host the Campus. We never thought our tiny lab would have had this big opportunity. The Palermo Urban Thinkers Campus is not only our biggest event ever, it’s also our first step as main actors in the international debate about the future of our cities. The conference Habitat III will address issues such as sustainable urbanization and the future of urban spaces. It will be also an opportunity to assess the level of development of our cities and think about new solutions in order to rethink our shared urban future. World Urban Campaign is guided by seven key principles: - Accessibile and pro-poor land, infrastructure, services, mobility and housing; - Social Inclusive, gender sensitive, healthy and safe development; - Environmentally sound and carbon-efficient built environment; - Participatory planning and decision making; - Vibrant and competitive local economies promoting decent work and livelihoods; - Assurance of non-discrimination and equal rights to the city; - Empowering cities and communities to plan for and effectively manage adversity and change. The Urban Thinkers Campus is an initiative of UN-Habitat conceived as an open space for critical exchange between urban actors who believe that urbanization is an opportunity and can lead to positive urban transformations. The Campus is also intended as a platform to build consensus between partners engaged in addressing urbanization challenges and proposing solutions to urban futures, to be included in the document The City We Need. This document is a collective contribution of committed partners united by shared goals and a common vision of the city for the XXI century. It sets key principles and establishes essential paths for building a New Urban Agenda towards Habitat III Conference. “The city we need” nine principles: 1. The city we need is socially inclusive 2. The city we need is well planned 3. The city we need is a regenerative city 4. The city we need is economically vibrant and inclusive 5. The city we need has a singular identity and sense of place 6. The city we need is a safe city 7. The city we need is a healthy city 8. The city we need is affordable and equitable 9. The city we need is managed at the metropolitan level.
