It’s a great time to be a kid in Albuquerque! I’m pleased to introduce our new summer program…Healthy U. Healthy U is a collective focus between three City Departments with the intent to provide a variety of recreational programs throughout the city so that all youth have opportunities to engage in healthy activities. Healthy U provides a university-like setting where youth and parents can choose from a variety of programs while working toward a larger goal…graduation into healthy habits and healthy lifestyles.

Our wonderful weather, system of bike trails, and jogging paths are unique assets that make Albuquerque a top outdoor destination. It’s easy to be outside in Albuquerque and we want to give our youth another reason this summer to get active.

My staff at the Parks & Recreation Department, Family & Community Services Department, and Cultural Services Department have pulled information and resources toward a common focus…Healthy Youth. This program guide is full of information to help you choose summer programs. You’ll find everything from photography activities to swimming lessons and more. There is registration information, phone numbers, physical addresses, and hyperlinks so that parents can find out more detailed information as needed.

Get out, get involved, get into Healthy U

Sincerely,

Richard J. Berry, Mayor

bIke rodeo

The bike rodeo is an Outdoor Recreation activity that is appropriate for children going into 3rd grade through 6th grade. The bike rodeo will begin with a 45 minute safety presentation. The presentation is offered to all children at the center. After the presentation the children will be broken up into groups of 20 to 25 kids. The groups will rotate in 45 minute increments through the outside portion of the bike rodeo. The outside portion consists of the children riding through a simulated road.

The bike rodeo is a free event offered to all community centers.

Cancellations may be appropriate if the weather does not permit it safe to ride, i.e. Rain and lightning. If a cancelation occurs at your center our staff will do the inside presentation and accommodations will be made to bring the outside portion of the bike rodeo back to the community center.

clImbIng Wall

The Climbing Wall is an Outdoor Recreation activity that is appropriate for children going into 1st grade and up. Our staff will take groups of approximately 20 to 25 kids in 45 minute increments. Our staff will begin with each group by giving them a 10 minute safety talk for the use of the climbing wall. This is followed by 35 minutes of climbing in which the children can receive 2 to 3 climbs each.

The climbing wall will be offered every day of the week. The climbing wall will arrive at your center approximately 15 to 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. If the climbing wall is not in demand on the scheduled day the community center may have our staff stay longer if the approximated time is not enough to sufficiently complete each group.

As the summers are hot, our staff would prefer the climbing wall to be scheduled in the morning. If both climbing walls are taken the morning that you wish to schedule, accommodations can be made so that your community center can receive the climbing wall in the afternoon.

The climbing wall is a free event offered to community centers. This event can only be scheduled if a bike rodeo is scheduled to show up at that community center.

Cancellations may be appropriate if the weather does not permit the climbing wall to be safely used; i.e. rain, wind and lightning. If a cancelation occurs at your center accommodations can be made to reschedule. Since the climbing wall is in high demand it may be unavailable to reschedule in the event of a cancelation.

rockets

Model rockets is an event that is offered by Outdoor Recreation and is appropriate for children going into 3rd grade and up. However if the community center has a smaller population of children we will allow younger children to participate and we will ask that more of your staff accompany the build portion of this event. .

Model rockets is a two day event. The first day will consist of the building of the model rockets which take approximately 2 hours. The second day will consist of the launching of the model rockets.

The model rocket program costs $10 per rocket. Registration takes place at the community center.

Healthy U Community Centers

Outdoor Recreation will be offering a unique program to select Healthy U Community Centers. A Nature Photography Project will include information about Environmental Stewardship, digital photography, and exploration of our beautiful outdoors. Youth will bring home a photo CD of their experience and have an opportunity to display it at the season ending Art Exhibit. There is a $5 fee and registration takes place at your Community Center.

storIes In the sky: When the Balloon Museum launched “Stories in the Sky,” a weekly story time for children ages 0-6, they expected a good response, but soon learned that “good” did not really describe the event! Since its launch on February 4, 2009, the weekly event has had a steady attendance of over 60 people each week, with a high of 98. Each year about 3,000 children, parents, grandparents and caregivers participate in the fun learning experiences. Designed to engage even the youngest visitors with stories, music and movement, and engaging curiosity that expands the learning experience, “Stories in the Sky” was developed by the Museum’s Curator of Education, Laurie Magovern, who leads the group each week.

laUnch & learn FamIly day: Launch & Learn! Drop-in hands-on workshops for all ages! Please join us for this NEW program as part of the Balloon Museum’s 5-year anniversary celebration. Held on the second Saturday of each month from 2-4 p.m., starting January 8. New topics and activities every month: science experiments, art projects, flying demonstrations and entertainment.
