Living HistoryMaking its debut over the Doors Open weekend is a brand new way to experience Steveston’s historical sites. The Living History program invites visitors to step into the past with historical demonstrations led by heritage interpreters dressed in period costume. Sort seeds at London Heritage Farm (Site 26), then head over to Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site (Site 24) to play a game of mahjong. Explore Steveston village to discover the stories of passengers who rode on the Steveston Interurban Tram (Site 21) and try your hand at writing out a bank deposit slip at the Steveston Museum (Site 20).

Walk Richmond Walking TourBritannia Shipyards National Historic Site 5180 Westwater DriveSaturday only 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.This family friendly group walk begins at Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site (Site 24) and continues along the trails in Steveston beside the Fraser River to picturesque London Farm (Site 26). Participants can explore the 1890s farmhouse and grounds before returning to Britannia at their own pace.

On Sunday, participate in a guided tour of City Hall to learn more about how your local government operates and explore the building features along the way.

Tour begins at 10 a.m. and can accommodate a maximum of 40 people.

See how scientists age birds by looking at their feathers. Please wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.

19. Open Art Studio3171 Chatham Street Visit Adrienne’s studio to view expressionistic, abstract paintings and enjoy plein air work in acrylic on canvas. Participate in a demonstration of stick drawing with India ink.

Steveston Museum3811 Moncton Street Enjoy live music and join local artists as they create and display paintings, drawings and photography in the museum’s Town Square Park with Steveston’s Lighthouse Collective. Visit the bank manager’s office and try your hand at writing out a bank deposit slip, then explore the exhibits to hear the stories about the Japanese hospital and school.

Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site5180 Westwater Drive Experience history come alive and discover a wealth of activities that help tell the story of the people who lived and worked at Britannia. Learn about woodworking and sewing, play a game of mahjong or run down the boardwalk with a hoop and stick like children did 100 years ago.

25. Branscombe House4900 Steveston Highway Pick a color and join in the weaving of a place setting for the picnic table at Branscombe House. Setting the Table is a series of presentations and weave-ins organized by artist-in-residence Paige Gratland with support of the Richmond Weavers & Spinners Guild. Honorary expert and tour guide Bernie Papke will also be on site to answer any questions you might have about this historic home.

26. London Heritage Farm6511 Dyke Road Tour the exquisitely furnished rooms of the London Family’s 1890s farmhouse and stroll through the park to enjoy the heritage herb and perennial gardens. Try your hand at washing clothes with a wringer and scrub board or sort seeds as Mr. London would have done when planning what fruit trees and vegetables to plant.

Finn Road Studio and Garden NEW SITE9811 Finn Road Bike or drive to the Slough District to visit Steve Bridger’s picturesque painting studio and garden, located across from Hai Doan’s well known Finn Road heritage garden. Meet with the artist and find out more about his thoughtful and diverse landscapes, collages and abstracts.

28. Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks NEW SITE103 – 11220 Horseshoe Way Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.Come visit Fuggles & Warlock’s production facility and take a tour with one of our knowledgeable staff. Learn the science behind brewing beer then stay for a tasting rack on our patio.

29. Lingyen Mountain Temple10060 No. 5 Road Explore the courtyard and visit special displays about the Ten Dharma Realms and Buddhist philosophy. Take a guided tour of the temple and learn about the temple’s collection of 3000+ Buddha statues! Refreshments and snacks will be served between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. each day.

Learn about the beliefs and practices of Islam through demonstrations of the Muslim prayer, exhibits and multi-media presentations. Please note: Visitors will be asked to remove shoes and are requested to follow a modest dress code (for example, no short shorts, short skirts, or tank tops).

31. Richmond Mosque BC Muslim Association12300 Blundell Road Join us to experience the Holy Month of Ramadan first hand. Tour the mosque including the main prayer hall. This year there is a focus on how fasting in Ramadan teaches patience and compassion. Daily afternoon prayers at 1:30 p.m. are open to observation by visitors. Please note: Visitors are requested to follow a modest dress code (for example, no short shorts, short skirts, or tank tops).

32. Richmond Nature Park NEW SITE11851 Westminster Highway Visit Richmond Nature Park for adventurous family fun! Explore the park through themed activities and guided walks.

EAST RICHMOND

33. The Museum at the Sherman Armoury5500 No. 4 Road Explore exhibits of uniforms and see edged weapons dating back to WWI and WWII. View the photographic history of combat service support from Greater Vancouver. There will also be displays by the resident Army Reserve Unit. Please note: As this is a military site, there is a requirement to sign a liability waiver before entry.

34. Richmond Ismaili Jamatkhana NEW SITE4000 May Drive (Entrance off May Drive)Tour the Ismaili Jamatkhana and view a beautiful selection of an Islamic art exhibit. View the various spaces and learn about the diverse and pluralistic nature of Islamic architecture including the prayer hall.

35. Phoenix Perennials3380 No. 6 Road Celebrate pollinators in your garden with special displays on plants for hummingbirds, native bees and honeybees, and butterflies. Attend our free Pollinator workshop on Saturday at 1 p.m. (Registration is required.). Chat with the David Suzuki Foundation’s Butterflyway Rangers and learn about their work to turn Richmond into a butterfly mecca.

36. Nanaksar Gurdwara Gursikh Temple18691 Westminster Highway Guided tours will be offered every half hour starting at 10 a.m., including a walk through the inner sanctuary where visitors can observe the reading of the holy Sikh scriptures. Visitors are also welcome to try langar (traditional vegetarian Punjabi food) throughout the day.
