The Seaside Garden Club announces that Vic Madamba, Texas Master Naturalist will be at their August 17 meeting.

Mr. Madamba will present a program on the devastating effect of this past winter's freeze on the population of Monarch Butterflies and how we can help them in time for September's migration by providing habitat, food and protection for the larvae. As the Monarch is the Texas State insect, we want to encourage their continued presence in our gardens.

Learn more about what you can do to help at Seaside Garden Club meeting on August 17, 12:30 pm at Carother's Coastal Gardens, 605 Pine Gully Road, Seabrook ,TX. 77586.

PUBLIC NOTICE

June 21, 2011Harris County is experiencing unprecedented drought conditions this year, with measurements on the Keetch-ByramDrought Index (KBDI) approaching 750. The KBDI, which ranges from 0 to 800, is a measure of soil moisture and an indicator of fire potential. Commissioners Court had implemented a burn ban until July 19 for unincorporated Harris County earlier this year when the KBDI reached 500. Court members extended that ban for 90 days this morning, keeping the county under a full burn ban until mid-October.

JULY 21, 2011 ANNOUNCEMENT:The City of Seabrook is now lifting the requirements of Stage II of its drought contingency plan and is re-implementing Stage I of the plan. Please go to the City website for the details of Stage I conservation.

10 EASY WATER CONSERVATION TIPS

1. Water your yard thoroughly, but only as needed – usually no more than 1 inch, once a week.

2. Use drip irrigation for plants and gardens, and water early in the morning to minimize evaporation.

3. Collect rainwater for landscape use – it is great for the plants, and can save you water and money.

4. Install aerators to cut in half the amount of water used by each faucet.5. Fix faucet leaks, which can waste up to 3,000 gallons of water a year.

6. Install water-efficient plumbing fixtures to reduce water consumption by 25% to 60% and save energy.

7. Check your toilet by using a leak-detection dye tablet. Leaks can waste up to 200 gallons of water a day.

8. Replace older toilets with water-efficient models and save up to 4,000 gallons of water a year.

9. Wash only full loads of laundry – an average household can save more than 3,400 gallons of water each year.

10. Invest in an Energy Star-qualified clothes washer, which typically uses 50% less water and 37% less energy per load.
