Anglia Co-operative Funerals is helping to ensure a ‘green’ legacy. For every funeral conducted by its branches across East Anglia it will arrange for a tree to be planted in a local managed woodland.

Jonathan Groves is area manager for branches in Peterborough, as well as Watkins and Stafford, H E Bull and Son in Whittlesey, M J Claypole in Yaxley, and A Coley and Son in Crowland. He explained: “The initiative is called Forever Green. It’s part of our corporate and social responsibilities and it will help ensure that future generations of tree stocks are replenished. Next of kin will be given details of where the tree is planted so that they can visit if they wish. Anglia Co-operative Funerals is proud to be environmentally aware and alongside this new initiative all our staff uniforms will be ‘green’ accredited, too.”

Forty more carersIn March last year, Home Instead Senior Care set the goal of creating 40 care jobs in Peterborough, Oundle & The Deepings. A year later and the company has achieved this goal and is now setting out ambitious plans to double the number and add another 40 jobs to the local area in 2014.

The care-at-home company, based at Thorpe Wood, Peterborough, is providing a unique, companionship-based service where the minimum call visit is an hour. One of the directors of the company, Phil Kennedy, says: “This is an exciting time for our care service, as we know we require those extra 40 care workers this year in order to meet the growing demands of our local ageing population.

New range of Infused Oils Charlotte Charlesworth of the Scene tried out a brand new treatment, not only to Radiance Beauty Suite but also to the Peterborough area. The marketing blurb says: “3D Lipo is a complete approach to targeted fat reduction and body contouring”. The treatment is based on a low frequency ultrasound that produces a wave of pressure. Fat cell membranes cannot withstand this and disintegrate into a liquid state. The result is fat loss and reduction in cellulite. The procedure also uses radio frequency to penetrate the skin layers and target the collagen fi bres. The resulting heat tightens them and improves regeneration, which gives smoother, younger looking skin. You can choose what area you target, like stubborn love handles, bingo wings and fl abby thighs.

“Natalie is the head therapist and she has a lovely easy-going personality and makes you feel really welcome and relaxed,” says Charlotte. “My 40-minute treatment resulted

in a half inch loss around my abdomen, which I’m really pleased with.” Radiance Beauty Suite, Regional Pool, Bishops Road, Peterborough PE1 5BW t: 07920 160792

The skill of three photographers from the Peterborough area is helping to raise money

to support wildlife projects all over East Anglia.Peter Beesley and Michael Buxton from

Peterborough, and Lorna Garrett from Yaxley, were all successful in Anglia Co-operative’s 2014 Regional Wildlife Calendar photographic competition.

Peter is a member of Peterborough Bird Club and became interested in photography just over three years ago. His image of a waxwing feasting on rowan berries was chosen as the March photograph in this year’s calendar and won him £250.

Michael is an honorary life member of Peterborough Photographic Society, has twice been its president and has had his work featured in international exhibitions. His winning shot was of a grey heron on a winter’s day.

Lorna is a recent recruit to the ranks of amateur photographers and this was her fi rst-ever competition win. Her photo of a hoverfl y in her back garden was singled out for special praise by the judges, who were Peterborough Telegraph chief photographer Rowland Hobson and city birdwatching journalist and publisher David Cromack.

Rowland says: “We had more than 800 entries and the standard was so high we also picked out six further images to be highly commended.”

All profi ts from the sales of the calendar will be shared between wildlife activities taking place across Anglia Co-operative’s business area – including the wildlife watch groups for children run by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northants, and the work of Peterborough and District Beekeepers Association.

Last year’s calendar netted £15,000 for its causes. Money also came from the sales of Christmas cards featuring images taken by amateur photographers. This year the aim is to hit £50,000.

The calendar, which costs £3.99, and packs of 10 Christmas cards, which also cost £3.99, are on sale at Anglia Co-operative foodstores and on-line at www.shop.coopcompetition.co.uk

Turkey is often the centrepiece of your Christmas meal, so it’s worth getting it right.

Follow expert advice from Doran Leigh, Head Chef at the White Hart, Ufford for a delicious birdChef at the White Hart, Ufford for a delicious bird

TurkeyTurkeyTurkeyTurkeyTurkeyTurkeytipsand skin, then rub more butter all over the outside. 3. Don’t fi ll the main body cavity with stuffi ng as this prevents heat from reaching the centre and can result in undercooked turkey. Instead open the neck cavity and push the mixture in. 4. Chestnuts, dried apricots or raisins, and sage all go well with sausagemeat stuffi ng. 5. Try putting a few halves of citrus fruit inside the main cavity or add some herbs and an onion to fl avour as it cooks. 6. Tying the legs close together

at the ends of the drumsticks helps prevent the meat drying out. 7. To calculate an accurate cooking time, weigh the bird once it’s stuffed.

8. Pour stock into the roasting tin, then sit the bird

above this on a roasting rack. This steams the meat, making

it more succulent.Remove it for the last 30 minutes to allow the skin to colour and crisp up. Spoon over juices from the pan every 30 minutes or so. 9. Let the bird to rest for a minimum of 20 minutes after cooking so the meat fi bres relax and all the lovely juices soak back into the fl esh. 10. To check if your turkey is cooked use a meat thermometer or pierce the thickest part of the thigh with a metal skewer. If the juices run clear with no trace of pink or red, it’s cooked.Below are the important thawing times for frozen turkey to ensure safe eating.

❄ A 3.5kg (8lb) turkey will take approximately 16 hours to thaw and 2 hours 45 minutes to cook (gas mark 5/190°C/fan 170°C), and will serve 4-6 people.

❄ A 5kg (11lb) turkey will take approximately 21 hours to thaw and 3 hours 15 minutes to cook, and will serve 6-10 people.

❄ A 6.4kg (14lb) turkey will take approximately 28 hours to thaw and 4 hours to cook, and will serve 10-15 people.

❄ A 9kg (20lb) turkey will take approximately 28 hours to thaw and 4 hours 40 minutes to cook, and will serve 15+ people.

Fat melts awayFat melts awayFat melts awayThe natural process the body

goes through to digest fat is simulated by a substance that has been developed and manufactured synthetically by Professor Pasquale Motolese, the inventor of Aqualyx. When Aqualyx is injected into the body it starts to work on the fat’s cell walls to make them unstable. This releases the fatty acid stored within and the residue is removed by the body’s defences. The non fatty acids are converted into energy. This procedure gives excellent results on double chins, upper arms, lipoma, waist, love handles, hips, saddle bags, knees and thighs. Aqualyx dissolves troublesome fat deposits simply and effectively and is almost pain freesurgical procedure for dissolving fat deposits.

The number of treatments required varies according to the desired effect and the reactions of the individual’s fat tissue. On average you will have to expect to attend between three and fi ve appointments, at three-week intervals, until you can perceive the results.

beautifulbeautifulbeautifulWinter bodyWinter bodyWinter bodyMoisturising tips Try not to have super-long showers – water is a winter wolf in sheep’s clothing. While you might think it’s hydrating, water topically can have a drying effect on your skin. In fact, the more water that hits your skin, the more it breaks down your natural moisture levels. Over-bathing or over-showering will make dry skin even drier, so do your dousing in small doses, and make sure you moisturise immediately afterward.

The best way to moisturise is to invest in a nourishing body butter, the more natural the better because these don’t contain harsh chemicals which can have a drying effect on the skin after a few hours. At

Zula we love Africology body balms and butters as these are 100% natural. If we are in a rush we also adore

Vaseline Spray and Go body moisturiser, which is a quick

Taking care of your skin in winter is a matter of a few simple rules of thumb and a little bit of natural care

convenient way to moisturise because there’s no need to rub in. Genius!

Exfoliating face and body Depending on how oily or dry your face is, it’s recommended that you exfoliate one to three times a week at the end of your shower when your pores have been steamed open. Never exfoliate more than three times a week or you could break down your natural barrier function and make your dry, fl aky skin even worse. Another don’t: scrubs that contain abrasive grains. Look for granules that are manmade, perfectly round spheres because they won’t rip or break the skin. St Ives apricot scrub is both natural

and reasonably priced, and can be used on face as well as body.

With your body, you should also exfoliate at least three times a week. This will simultaneously stimulate circulation and help your after-shower moisture lotions to sink in more readily. But don’t slough with a loofah. Once these have been used they are loaded with bacteria.

For a real exfoliation and nourishing treat why not indulge yourself in an Africology Inkomfi Sloughing treatment at Zula Beauty Sanctuary. Tel: 01733 289905 or visit www.zulabeauty.co.uk

Party head

It’s the morning after the

night before, so

how do you cope?

Excessive partying, over-indulging and staying up all hours! Sound familiar? Well, that’s what Christmas is

all about, isn’t it? But with all that fun there’s sometimes a price to be

paid. So if your head’s in a spin, here are some of the best natural remedies and hangover cures you could try.

● Hydrate to clear out the toxinsNothing new here… it is always a good idea to drink plenty of water before, during and after indulging in your favourite tipple.

● Tiger Balm Dab this on the back of your neck and temples and massage it in. After a few minutes until your headache should melt away.

● Mustard Bath Because of its noted ability to increase circulation and draw toxins out from the internal organs, mustard has become a little-known hangover-healing health secret. Add 2tbsp of pure mustard powder to warm running bath water. Soak for 20 minutes, dry off, take a nap and let the mustard take effect.

● Refl exology Rub away your aches and pains while assisting your liver to speed up detoxifi cation. Stimulate the outer edge area of your right foot, about halfway between the middle of the foot

and the little toe. This is the refl ex to the liver. You may notice some “crunchy” texture which is a sign that there is

some congestion in the area associated with that spot.

Apparently the hair of the dog and a greasy fry-up are NOT to be recommended. But then, if they work for you who are we to comment? Here are some other indulgent foods to try, with apologies to all you health gurus out there…

● Banana smoothie – the potassium in the banana has detoxifying qualities and the sugars will certainly help your post-alcohol low blood sugar level.

● Pizza – your body will crave carbs and what better way to deliver them than via a pizza with all your favourite toppings.

● Chocolate – you do not need a hangover to appreciate the amazing qualities of chocolate. To be fair, it’s the answer to most

situations, isn’t it?

The 14-acre Itter Park in Fulbridge Road,

Peterborough was donated to the city council in 1936 by the Itter family, in memory of the late Mayor, businessman and philanthropist, Arthur Werner Itter (1899-1935). It was conceived as the city’s main northern park and was opened to the public on 16 June 1936.

Arthur was elected a local councillor from 1929 to 1934 and then Mayor of the city, but died in offi ce on 26 December 1935. A Londoner by birth and educated at Holborn Grammar School he became a student of the Institute of Civil Engineers

before joining J & W Gwynne of Hammersmith who manufactured land drainage pumps.

He then moved to Peterborough and purchased from the late Mr J W Craig land which intersected

the Great Northern Railway at Fletton. His purpose was the manufacture of machine-made bricks using the famous Oxford clay and shale known as “Fletton Knots”. The Itter bricks, as they became known, were manufactured in great quantities and the Itter’s Brick Co Ltd could fi ll over 50 railway wagons a day. Output continued to grow in the fi rst quarter of the 20th century, and Arthur had to purchase £10,000 worth of private wagons to meet the transportation needs of his domestic as well as hisoverseas markets.

The Itter brick works could also be found at Kings Dyke, Whittlesey, Calvert in Buckinghamshire, Hednesford in Staffordshire, and Scalford in Leicestershire. The full-scale manufacture of bricks and roofi ng tiles ensured that the

company could fl oat on the Stock Exchange on 17 April 1926 with shares trading at £1 each. In 1927 the company had capital of £950,000 and its head offi ce was at 45 Priestgate, Peterborough.

Arthur Itter showed a remarkable trait for business enterprise but was also a self-made man with a profound understanding of public duty. He was Chairman of Fletton Parish Council and had 100 houses built for his workforce. Councillor Itter was said to be of a kindly disposition and very religious – he also had a church and school built on his land for his workers.

In 1901 the company was one of the country’s largest personally owned brick manufacturers. By the late 1920s many of Itter’s brickworks had become part of the much larger London

Brick Company empire. During this time Arthur

built Westfi eld, 28 Westwood Park Road as the family home. The property, which still stands, was constructed of hand-made red brick. It has classical proportions and is typical of its period, including wood panelling, leaded windows and parquet fl oors. Today the gardens are fi lled with mature trees and there is an outdoor swimming pool.

The public park in memory of Arthur Itter was landscaped by Eames (located off Newark Avenue, Peterborough) and today its facilities include tennis courts, table tennis tables, a bowls green, an outdoor gym, a putting green and football pitches. There’s also a wildlife pond, sensory garden and pretty seasonal fl ower beds.

From 2007 to 2010 Itter Park won the Green Flag award denoting it as one of more than 1,000 of the most

beautiful open spaces in the country.

Dreaming of a warm Christmas

Sam Cooke of Princeenergy explains how your fuel bills needn’t be too painful this winter

As Christmas approaches and the cold weather

bites we all have to do the dreaded deed of turning up our heating. Winter is always a costly season with the festivities to pay for and the need to keep homes warm. Unfortunately, this year with recent announcements of energy price hikes, it’s not going to get any cheaper.

It’s not all gloom and doom, though, there are ways of cutting the cost of heating and making extra savings with various cash incentives and tariff pay backs. Recent Government research, based on 300,000 properties, has shown that energy-saving improvements can put up to an amazing 38% on the value of a home in some parts of the country.

There are four schemes, three of which exist today and the other which will be introduced in spring next year. Homeowners need to be aware of the incentives in order to make the most of them. The three existing schemes include: ● The Feed-in Tariff

Scheme (FIT) where energy suppliers make quarterly payments to householders who generate their own electricity.

● Renewable energy options

The Green Deal, which helps you pay for energy-saving improvements to your home and is paid back through your reduced energy costs. A cash-back scheme also exists for various energy-saving improvements.

● The Energy Company Obligation Scheme (ECO), which provides installations of new energy-effi cient boilers and upgraded insulation FREE to qualifying people and properties.

Renewable energy options Solar PV - panels that turn sunlight into electricity to use in your home. Any excess is sold back to the national grid.Solar Thermal – solar collectors on the roof absorb heat from the sun and use this energy to supply hot water.Air Source Heat Pumps – outside air is drawn into the heat pump and this heat is transferred to the water system, providing heating and hot water.Ground Source Heat Pumps – underground pipes transfer heat to the pump, which in turn heats hot water and radiators.Biomass Heating – woodchips, pellets or logs are fed into a biomass boiler which provides heating and hot water. All of these energies offer cost savings compared with conventional heating systems.

The major new initiative to be introduced next year is the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). This will act as a big support for homeowners who choose to install renewable energies in place of fossil fuel systems.

Aside from taking up one of these measures, one of the most straightforward, cost effective and biggest differences you can make is to install a new boiler. Replacing an old ineffi cient one with an A-rated high effi ciency condensing alternative, and upgrading the heating controls, could save more than £300 a year.

There’s new government-backed funding available under ECO whereby many people are eligible for a completely free boiler replacement so long as they meet the criteria.

Princeenergy can advise on this and a number of other cost-saving solutions in the renewable energy sector, such

as heat pumps and biomass boilers. These alternatives can make the difference to your household bills of hundreds of pounds a year.

If you would like to hear more about energy saving options and the government schemes, please contact Princeenergy’s Sam Cooke on 01733 561216.
