The launch formed part of the de- partment’s Transport Month, cele- brated throughout October, cam- paign. The poster campaign added to a string of events held to highlight the dangers faced by child pedestri- ans on the roads. These events in- clude a child pedestrian fatalities map, scholar transport operations and radio campaigns. Grant said statistics show most children are knocked down on streets from 14:00 on weekdays, and on weekends when “parents should be looking after their chil- dren”. Talking about accidents in the province, Grant said provincial government spends millions on road accident incidents, especially when compared to education and health. “We have to pass on the message to communities, as well as talk to taxi associations and all mo- torists to drive carefully. The awareness must go beyond the school boundaries,” he said. As part of the campaign, a total of 300 posters were erected around Nkazimulo Primary School in Khayelitsha, where a boy was run over at pedestrian crossing in Au- gust. Posters were erected in Delft and around Oscar Mpetha High School in Nyanga. Deputy director for Road Safety Management David Frost believes speed limits in residential areas must be reduced. Frost explained the chances of survival is greater if a child was knocked down by a car driving at 20km/h as opposed to 60km/h. “Drivers should be aware of chil- dren; not the other way around,” he said. Itsitsa Primary School principal Simphiwe Ulana said no pupil of the school was knocked down since it opened in 2006. But he said he hopes speed bumps could be installed in the streets surrounding the school, so to prevent accidents from occur- ring. Violent acts aretoo common inSouth AfricaSomebody once said the Old Testamentis too violent. I guess he said thatbecause he wanted reassurance of somesort. As the result of not getting that, hesaid what he said.I guess you can say his conclusion wasthat the Bible was promoting violence.Or, the Bible was of no good.Others say the Old Testament isviolent because we left God.We decided to worship our own gods;that modern expression: “we dropped theball”. Instead of keeping our eyes on it,we allowed it wonder. Why am I sayingthis?I am saying it because of what hap-pened on Sunday, although we got wiseof it early Monday morning. It was myworst Monday blues. I usually haveMonday blues, but this Monday blueswas my worse ever. I cried for somebodyI did not know.I felt the worst pain for him. I didn’teven feel that pain for Madiba.I am talking about the news of SenzoMeyiwa, the Orlando Pirates and BafanaBafana goalkeeper.I found myself thinking – thoughts toomany too recall. I thought: will Bafanaever have a goalkeeper like him again;

he stopped so many goals for us; and herestored our prestige.I did not know that he had played forPirates for many years; I thought he wasa youngster, still wet behind the ears. And he was still young, especially fora goalkeeper of this calibre. Not so long ago we talked about howyoung black guys are killing each otherlike flies. We often say white peopleregard the life of a black man as cheap, but we forget to say that about our-selves.This year I saw three incidents ofviolence – one involved a gun and two aknife. The incident with a gun was afailed attempted hijacking. The driverwas shot in a foot, but he survived. The other two were senseless argu-ments between youths high on drugs. Our country is riddled with violence. It is a country of violent people. You cansee it by the way we behave – as if weown the world. We behave as if we are our ownbosses and do not see each other. Whoare you? That principle of ubuntu islong forgotten. Everyone is for himself.I don’t think we recognise God. Weuse Him for commercial reasons and actas if it’s better to not talk about Him.And you reckon Biblical times wereviolent... We are violent now, all becausewe have forgotten God.Stay positive.

serve Him through Jesus, and I foundedthis ministry two years ago,” she said.

One of the congregants, Noluthando No-tyenga, travelled all the way from Butter-worth to share her story of salvation.“Pastor Pinky prayed for me over the

phone and my life changed immediately. Iwas promoted at work and today I camehere to rejoice with her,” Notyenga said. Her brother worships with Mnamatha

and had voiced concerns about her sister. He informed Mnamatha, who then prayedwith her over the phone. The launch was attended by reverends

Deon Nkomfa Mkabile and Reuben SizweNyobole; Councillor Thozama Bevu; andbusinesswoman Mhonko Godze, who spon-sored portions of the service.Mnamatha thanked all who supported

her during the “dark hours of her life”.

Khwezi Park: Family day to be bigger and better in future

Fun and games for little onesMBONGISENI MASEKO

Christmas came early for more than 300Khayelitsha children, when they had a dayof special treats thanks to an aspiring localbusinessman. The event, which was held last Saturday,

was organised by Xolani Sishuba, the own-er of X-Chill ’n Grill in Khwezi Park. It wasthe second time the event was hosted thisyear and the fourth since its inception in2010.Children from Thembani, Khwezi Park 1

and 2, and Bongweni were excited as theygathered at a park in Khwezi. The day’s activities included a jumping

castle sponsored by the City of Cape Town, soccer, tennis, art games and yummy. Theactivities was also open to parents.“Children get a chance to play with their

parents andget toknowother children fromtheir neighbourhoods,” Sishuba said.“Some parents do not see the need to playwith their children.”He finances the day by dipping into his

business takings, while his friends also con-tribute. Furthermore, he wishes he couldhost the event monthly, so to keep childrenoff the streets. One of Sishuba’s main concerns is the

lack of sports facilities in the area and hehopes to take the event to greater heightsin future.Thirteen-year-old Loyiso Ndyebo ap-

plauded the initiative. “It is my first timehere and I really enjoyed it. I wish we couldhave more events like this,” he said.Mother of two Thembakazi Bizi (26) said:

“It’s great to see happy and excited chil-dren. I hope it will continue in the future.”

Market day: Grooming young entrepreneurs

Booming business at IkhwezilesizweMBONGISENI MASEKO

A first of its kind entrepre-neurship programme atIkhwezilesizwe PrimarySchool has been applaudedby pupils. The project saw pupils

developed ideas of startingtheir own businesses at theKhayelitsha school onTuesday 21 October.Grade 7 pupils engaged in

a marketing exercise, sell-ing cakes, sweets, burgers, braaied meat, crisps andcold drinks to their fellowpupils. The programme forms

part of their curriculum, sothe pupilswere also allocat-ed marks for marketingskills. It falls under EconomicManagementScience (EMS) subject. Principal NormaMayeye explained pupilswere asked to gen-erate trading ideas and goods. They thenhad draw up a budget and generate moneyat the market day.Mayeye, an EMS teacher, said the project

will be run in future years, as it was a toolto teach pupils about entrepreneurship.“I am overwhelmed and happy that the

daywas a success. It was a team effort,” shesaid.“The pupils really benefited, as it taught

them to be entrepreneurs. Initially, theythought it would be difficult, but they even-tually saw it was possible.”Pupils started their preparations for the

market day six weeks ago. Each pupil bor-rowed R50 from their parents to buy goodsto sell on the day. Of the 58 participating pu-

pils, 10 did not borrow money as they comefrom disadvantaged backgrounds. The pu-pils were divided into groups of eight. Ned-bank also came on board to shed some lighton how a successful business is run, andgave each participant a certificate for theirefforts. Coca-Cola also sponsored the pro-gramme. Pupil Zizipho Ngcolo (13) said theprogramme encouraged her group mem-bers to start their own businesses.“It was a good experience. There were

some challenges, because we did not knowwhere we would get capital,” she said.“Initially, we were not sure about how to

make profit. I gained experience of startingmy own business and I will start it soon.”Vendors trading at the school were re-

quested not to trader on the day of the mar-ket. They also supported pupils with adviseof operating a business.

Unity is the key for the newly establishedIlitha LekamvaEducareOrganisation to besuccessful. The forum, launched in Khayelitsha on

Friday 17 October, is comprised of local ed-ucare centres. It will work hand in glovewith Ithemba Labantwana, a project underthe auspices of Ikamva Labantu which pro-vides training and support to creches.Ilitha Lekamva deputy chairperson

Nobuntu Sohaba said the forum will“strengthen educare centre management”.“Childhood education is very important

andwewant tomake sure that our affiliatesproduce quality education,” Sohaba said. She added it will also give childhood edu-

care teachers a voice. “There are manychallenges in this sector. Together, we willbe able to speak to the powers that be witha single voice,” she said.

Khayelitsha Early Childhood Develop-ment Forum (KECDF) chairperson Thobe-ka Ratya welcomed the formation of the or-ganisation.“When Ikamva Labantu director Helen

Libberman approached us with this idea,we embraced it, as it’s will give educaresbigger voice,” Ratya said. The KECDFwill workwith Ilitha Lekam-

who was a guest at the launch said: “Therelationship between the health depart-ment and ECDs is much better these days. Most educare centres are now compliant, because they know the health of our chil-dren comes first.”

CITY VISIONThursday, 30 October 2014 LETTERS 11

Return to traditionIn response to “Two matricsdrown” (City Vision, 16October).

There are too many unex-plained deaths in our areasfor reasons we may or maynot know. A pattern surround-ing these deaths has developedand society is unaware of theforce behind it.

The two Luhlaza HighSchool matriculants whorecently drowned were thelast born in their families. The one boy was from Khu-lani Park. The Emaplangenishooting of nine, which leftfive dead and four seriouslyinjured, are all related toblack spirituality or ubug-qirha.

Khulani Park is no strangerto the deaths of young men. Most are the first or last bornin their families.

Black spirituality is sup-pressed; foreign religions haveovertaken our spirituality.

According to black spiritual-ity all first and last bornspawn are natural prophets. At times the child the spiritin chooses to use is the thirdborn.

Spirituality will try to shinethrough these persons throughunusual behaviour or inci-dents, so to get the attentionelders. Failure to respond tothe call results to death of theperson called by the spirit.

The unusual behaviourincludes excessive drinking;frequent accidents; the fre-quent changing of sexualpartners and mental instabili-ty. Some will contract fataldiseases, while others losetheir sight – mostly in the lefteye. Sudden severe strokesand heart attacks occur tosome people. Some hardlyfinish school.

They like loud music andare attractive to many, whichoften leads to fights with othermen. The Emaplangenishooting was a result ofuncontrollable temper –another sign of spiritualitycalling. All the people killedat Emaplangeni were the firstborn of their mothers, but haddifferent fathers from theirsiblings. The owners of theseEmaplangeni are also first orlast born. If you are a first orlast born, you will attract afirst or last born partner.

In the past, elders wouldrecognise these signs andconsult an igqirha to under-stand the person showingthese signs. Recommendationsfrom the igqirha would beacted on immediately.

Most know they are pos-sessed by the spirit, but theyjoke about it.

No death will occur in ablack family without priorwarning in the form of adream to a close familymembers. The warning isoften misunderstood ordismissed.

The dreams come from thespirit which will recall afamily member as a warningof death.

Black people known this, but they do not take it seriousand it has devastating resultsif unattended. Many regardamagqirha as primitive andbarbaric. They are embar-rassed but it.

The Khulani Park deathsare an example. They are

either first or last born andsome parents are universitygraduates. Ubugqirha is justnot in their vocabulary; it’snot an option for their chil-dren, who they see in univer-sity.

Both cannot be attended to,but academics is preferred. Itbecomes their way of life, against their true identities.Eurocentric education blindedmost black people and we fellinto a self-destruction trap. When you graduate, you weara black gown and hat. This isbad luck for us sisimnyama.

When families meet to cureof the person displayingspiritual signs we say:“Makudede ubumnyama kuveleukukhanya.”

We wear our white ingcawe, which opposes black attire ofthe universities. We get theblanket when we graduatefrom initiation school.

I am not jealous. Being agraduate promotes selfishnessand neglect of true identity. Most graduates see themselvesas European, not African.

The fathers of these fallenyoung men are also first orlast born. They never followedubugqirha and are made topay by their different clans.

This dates back to clashes ofamagqobhoka and amaqabaand in the end sizalwangamaqaba, ibubuqabalusindiso.

When izinyanya are fed-upwith one’s rejection of them, they recall that person atwhatever cost.

Many fail to understandhow the shooter at Emaplan-geni could continue shootingafter the fourth or fifth death. In the Luhlaza, case one of theparents is surprised at howthe pupils drowned in ashallow pool.

Izinyanya will use anysituation to recall somebody.Every black person hasisinyanya as his protector. When an accident happens, aprophet is consulted tounderstand why the protectorwas not there.

But it is your isinyanyawhich kills you for disobedi-ence. Izinyanya will always bethere to protect us when weobey them.

Those affected by thesedeaths can consult a prophetand the answer will point totheir rejection and neglectingof spirituality. It’s sad, buttrue.

Water is where our spiritualelders stay. It is where aspiritual student gets hisspiritual powers. It’s notaplayground; it’s a holy place. This is why it is referred to asemzini omkhulu and we lackswimming skills.

I am not trying to inflictmore pain to the bereavedfamilies. I am concerned aboutour lack of understanding andour way of life.

I hope my explanation willbring closure and understand-ing about the Khulani Parkdeaths.

I am the last born of mymother. She was a third child;her father is a first born. Abullet destroyed my leftforearm and led me to consultelders. I followed their recom-mendations. Camagu!

Mischievous taxi drivers andmotorists blow their horns andwhistle wildly as members ofthe Feminique Fitness Club(FFC) jog through the busystreets of Mfuleni. But FFC founder Yonela

Khetsheza is adamant they arenot bothered by lurid commentsthey often get from men on thestreets.“The things they say are rude,

but we don’t let it discourageus,” Yonela said.Yonela started the FFC when

she realised young women needto train.“We don’t only provide only

physical fitness, but also the ac-companying emotional supportneeded by women in town-ships,” she said. The battle against the bulge

involves more than poundingyour body.“A large majority of women

in townships have insufficientknowledge and guidance on nu-trition and exercise – we pro-vide that here,” she explained. The club is a community

building initiative throughshared physical fitness, Yonelasaid. Themembers exercises to-gether two or three times aweek in Mfuleni.

Her dream is to eventuallyopen a fully-equipped gym.The birth of Yonela’s son pre-

sented the impetus for a bigdream.Having studied sportmanage-

ment, she knew the value ofstaying healthy and fit. Shestarted jogging in her neigh-bourhood to loseweight – an un-usual sight in a township, de-spite it being only 40km fromCape Town CBD.But Yonela believes fitness is

not only about losingweight. “Ithelps boost self-esteem andbuilds community networks,”she said. Her enterprising spirit was

channelled when she decided tovolunteer as a sport facilitatorat local NGO Afrika Tikkun.“The idea for the club was

born from talks among my col-leagues and myself. I hated thatthey would find a diet onlineand just start it. They wouldcome when it hadn’t worked,”Yonela explained.Interactions with other wom-

en inspired her to start the club– and she leads by example.“Iwalk towork; I always have

a bottle of water with me; and Ijog back home,” she said.By day, she teaches basic

computer skills and runs hergym class at night. A lack of in-

door facilities hasforced the womento exercise outsideMfuleni Satdium.Yonela says that

the communityworker in herkeeps her going, aswell as the oppor-tunity to impactlives.Vuyokazi

Gamtele (22) saidbeing part of theclasses keeps herfocused.“We share ad-

vice and tips, andstick to each likefamily,” she said.Lusanda Gxil-

ishe said the gymoffers the women achance to bondand share experi-ences, while beat-ing the bulge andunfitness.“We are a happy

family; we encour-age more womento join us,” shesaid.

the season for both teams. They will

now have a break before the com-mencement of the 2015 season inMarch.FC Khayelitsha is a fairly young
