Civic takes a bold new direction. With and sheer style, when you get behind you’ll just want to drive.

Go see what’s down that side road you pass every day. Discover what lies around that distant bend. Explore anywhere and everywhere. It’s such a fun driving experience, you won’t want to stop.

power, handling, safety the wheel of the Honda Civic

Every last detail will entice you.

With super-sleek lines stretching

from the cleverly shaped dual beam

headlights that slant towards the

ultra-smooth windshield rake, then

onto a beautifully pert rear. Take a

closer look and you’ll also notice the

road-hugging stance, sport alloys

and big, oval dual exhaust pipes.

For Honda designers, style has always been about motion and this sports-sedan is no exception.

Every carefully considered contour not only looks great, but also deflects wind effortlessly over the car. The Civic quite simply demands attention.

But don’t be shy, you’re not the first to stare and you certainly won’t be the last.

1.8S

When you first set eyes on the stunning design you’ll be overwhelmed by its elegant, sporty body shape. Then as you follow the seductive, sweeping curves you’ll find yourself doing so almost furtively.

The height of sporting luxury meets the epitome of safety. A superbly appointed driver and passenger space not only increases your driving pleasure but also makes your journey safer.

Comfort, convenience and style – everything you need to enjoy the experience of driving the Civic.

Surrounding you are the six

speakers of the powerful

45 watt x 4, MP3/WMA

capable CD audio system with

in-dash auxiliary audio input

jack suitable for a portable

music player. Cooling you is

climate air conditioning.

With its spacious body, a sweeping curve of dashboard and a flat rear floor, the Civic creates an extraordinary feeling of space.

The cabin’s design does more than soothe

your senses. It actually makes your driving

safer. The cockpit features a ‘dual-display‘

console with the instruments you use

most – like the speedometer – located

high up near your line of sight and focus.

The secondary instruments are located

in the traditional position, while audio

and cruise controls are set on the leather-

wrapped steering wheel. This means your

eyes stay on the road – and your mind on

your driving.

Ingeniously placed in all sorts

of handy locations are useful

storage compartments including

cup holders for both front and

rear passengers and storage for

over 18 CDs.

The leather-wrapped sports steering wheel is

both height (left) and reach (right) adjustable.

For the ultimate indulgence, the Sport models take style to the next level with front, side and rear under spoilers plus a boot spoiler.

1.8S

With a comprehensive range of models to choose from – 1.8S, 2.0S and Hybrid – each available as a Sport model, the Civic sets a new benchmark for its class.

Choose the Hybrid for lower emissions and improved fuel economy, while retaining Civic’s outstanding performance and unique style.

The Civic makes no compromises. Sports performance and handling is matched by world-leading safety and security technology, and finished with more features and style than you would ever expect.

The range begins with the 1.8S, which has almost every conceivable feature as standard.

Add more with the 2.0S: not only do you get more power but it also comes standard with unique 17” alloy wheels, ducktail spoiler, leather upholstery, in-dash 6-CD stacker, HID headlights (High Intensity Discharge) for a brighter, safer view of the road, and a one-touch sunroof.

The power of dreams drives Honda engineers to achieve the seemingly impossible. A new generation of engines show that power can come with economy.

1.8-litre engine

The 1.8-litre i-VTEC engine serves

to reconfirm Honda’s prowess at

building engines, producing 103kW

of power and 174Nm of torque,

resulting in the performance of

competitors’ 2.0-litre engines

while extracting the economy of

a 1.5-litre engine through the

use of variable capacity cylinder

management i-VTEC.

The Civic uses Honda’s Formula One bred i-VTEC – an intelligent technology that increases power and improves economy – in a choice of three power-trains: a new 2.0-litre derived from the award-winning Accord Euro, a completely new 1.8-litre, and the advanced petrol-electric IMA Hybrid system.

Hybrid IMA engine

If you’re driven by outright fuel

economy and emission control,

the Civic Hybrid is your car. It

showcases the next generation of

Honda’s remarkable petrol-electric

Hybrid technology, combining a

1.3-litre, 8-valve SOHC i-VTEC,

i-DSI (Intelligent Dual &

Sequential Ignition) engine,

with a synchronous drive,

ultra-thin electric motor in

a system called Integrated

2.0-litre engine

The 2.0-litre DOHC i-VTEC engine

demonstrates why Honda is the

world’s most acclaimed and largest

engine manufacturer. It delivers an

exhilarating 114kW of power and

188Nm of torque; enough to satisfy

even the sportiest of drivers.

A smoother drive

Drive-By-Wire (DBW) throttle is

a feature on all Civic engines.

Instead of an inefficient mechanical

connection from the accelerator

to the engine, precision electronics

respond directly to the pressure

applied to the accelerator, optimising

engine power and efficiency, and

smoothing out gear shifts.

On the 1.8-litre engine, the DBW

throttle and i-VTEC combine

seamlessly to tailor the throttle

opening and valve inlet timing to

generate the power you need at

the maximum possible efficiency.

This results in truly outstanding fuel

economy and performance.

Motor Assist (IMA). With a CVT

automatic (Continuously Variable

Transmission), it offers an out-

standing combination of driving

and environmental performance,

delivering the potency of a 1.8-litre

engine on an amazing level of

fuel economy.

The Civic Hybrid has got the horses. And it’s less thirsty than ever. In these fuel challenged times, the petrol-electric IMA Hybrid shows you can love driving and still love your environment.

The Civic Hybrid meets environ-

mental and fuel challenges head on.

It looks every bit as sleek as its

petrol powered stable-mates, but

underneath lies a special breed of

engine: Honda’s latest generation

Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system

which combines a 3-stage i-VTEC,

i-DSI engine with an intelligent, ultra-

thin electric motor.

Honda’s IMA Hybrid system has

already received wide acclaim for its

economy, practicality and ease of

use. It has been re-engineered to be

even lighter, more efficient and more

intelligent than ever.

And now, for the first time,

the Civic Hybrid is able to

operate on electric power only.

It’s also smart. For example, when

Not only significantly more powerful than its predecessor, it has more response than 1.8-litre petrol engines yet uses less fuel than ever before, and with lower emissions. It surpasses Japanese 2005 emission level standards by 75% and already beats the stringent Japanese standards in place for 2010.

With more cars in the world than at any other time in history Honda knows the need to protect the environment is more important than ever. Now there’s another challenge: fuel.

you’re stationary the petrol engine

goes to standby, then the instant you

need to accelerate it’s ready.

To ensure abundant electric

power, the Hybrid is designed

to charge its batteries while you

drive by recapturing energy during

deceleration and by regenerative

braking. (It doesn’t need to be

plugged into a power socket in your

garage). So when you get in to drive,

the batteries are ready to go; you

just turn the key to start it up.

The Civic Hybrid is not about

engineering prizes or newspaper

headlines. It’s about making

an environmentally friendlier

car that’s sporty and easy to

drive, and doesn’t compromise

on performance.

1. Vehicle stationary (automatic idle stop): Engine automatically stopped. Zero fuel consumption and zero exhaust emissions. Automatic Idle Stop lamp on. Engine automatically re-starts as driver releases brakes. Under certain circumstances, the engine might not stop, anticipating imminent departure.

2. Start-up and acceleration (engine + electric motor assist): Engine running in low rpm mode. Electric motor assist provides necessary additional power to accelerate.

3. Gentle acceleration (engine only): Engine running in low rpm mode.

4. Low speed cruise (electric motor assist only): When cruising on light throttle at less than 40km/h, all 4 cylinders are deactivated, valves close and fuel supply is stopped using a system called VCM (Variable Cylinder Management). The vehicle runs on power from the electric motor alone. Under certain circum-stances the engine may not be deactivated.

5. Acceleration (engine + electric motor assist): Engine running in low rpm mode. Electric motor assist provides necessary additional power to accelerate.

6. Rapid acceleration (engine + electric motor assist): As speed rises, engine switches to high rpm mode for higher power output. Electric motor assist provides additional power for strong, powerful acceleration.

7. High speed cruise (engine only): Engine running in low rpm mode.

8. Deceleration (IMA battery recharge mode): All 4 cylinders are deactivated and fuel supply is stopped. The electric motor switches to regenerative braking mode and energy recovery is maximised to recharge the IMA batteries.

3-stage i-VTEC modes for the IMA system

1. Cylinders deactivated

Inlet and outlet valves are closed, shutting the cylinder to reduce pumping

loss, consuming no petrol.

2. Economy i-VTEC (low rpm mode)

At low rpms, the inlet valve is partially opened for maximum fuel economy.

The engine remains running to maintain vehicle speed.

3. Performance i-VTEC (high rpm mode)

The inlet valve is fully opened at high rpms for maximum power and torque

under acceleration at high engine revs.

and it’s no wonder the Civic is such

a dynamic drive.

Safer handling

Electronic Stability Control (VSA),

which includes Traction Control,

works in combination with the

DBW, braking and throttle system to

achieve safer handling in even the

worst conditions. During cornering,

VSA determines if the car is deviating

from its correct path. The system

monitors the speed of the car as well

as the relative speed of each wheel,

the amount of turn on the steering

wheel and the yaw and lateral

How ABS, EBD and EBA work

together for safer stopping.

Under emergency braking ABS stops

the wheels from locking, enabling

steering control to be retained.

Independent left/right EBD works in

tandem with ABS to maintain vehicle

stability and help prevent the rear of

the car fishtailing during emergency

braking. EBA detects sudden

brake pedal action to automatically

boost braking power to reduce

stopping distance.

Rigid monocoque body construction, using high-tension steel, integrates the body and chassis structures into one solid unit. This creates a secure foundation for stable sporty handling and luxurious ride comfort.

The new generation 2.0-litre, 1.8-litre and IMA Hybrid engines put exhilarating power right at your feet. But what is power without control?

Honda’s engineers have packed the Civic with advanced Formula One racing derived suspension and chassis technologies, so you can confidently negotiate even the trickiest conditions.

Sitting sure-footed on a long wheelbase, the Civic flows along the road with a stability that inspires absolute confidence.

Transmissions

The 5-speed automatic on 1.8-litre

and 2.0-litre models allows sporty

manual shifting using Sequential

G -forces on the vehicle. Should the

car deviate from its correct path,

VSA activates to bring the car back

on track by applying the brakes to

any individual wheel or adjusting the

engine output.

style shift paddles positioned behind

the steering wheel. A slick shifting

5-speed manual transmission is also

available for the 1.8-litre models.

The Hybrid uses a CVT automatic

transmission for improved fuel

economy and performance.

Gear Logic Control

Gear Logic Control – standard on

the automatic transmission –

assesses the current driving

situation, taking into account

gradients, cornering and engine

speed. Gear Logic Control then

determines the correct gear to

maintain your current driving style

and holds it instead of

unnecessarily gear hunting, giving

you more acceleration and control

when and where you want it. The

adjacent illustration shows a typical

driving situation and the benefits of

Gear Logic Control.

Advanced active and passive safety technologies ensure peace of mind. In the sports performance of the Civic you can take comfort from the armoury of world-leading safety features.

All these safety technologies are standard on every Civic. Honda believes that extra safety is not an extra luxury.

Active head restraints move the

front seat headrests forward

in the event of a rear impact,

helping reduce neck injuries.

All seat belts are 3-point ELR

pre-tensioners and load limiters

in the front. Three child seat

tether points across the back

seat with Automatic Locking

Reel (ALR) seat belts hold

child seats securely.

Surrounding you is an integrated,

one-piece (monocoque) structure

A vast array of active technologies

are inside the cabin ready to protect

you against the unexpected.

Not only are there front i-SRS

dual-stage airbags for driver and

front passenger but also side

Our Price PromiseOne sharp, fair price for everyone and better resale values. That’s our promise to protect the value of your investment in a new Honda.

Special deals, demonstrator sales and fleet discounts all work to lower resale prices, undermining the value of your new car and speeding up its depreciation. So at Honda New Zealand, we’ve traded in the old sales model for a new one that is easier, fairer and offers our customers better value.

You don’t have to negotiate to get a fair deal on a new Honda. Our Price Promise gives every buyer the same sharp price right from the start and we promise to keep our prices as reliable and consistent as we possibly can. And that means your new Honda will hold its value better than most other brands.

So when you choose a new Honda, you’ll drive away with a great car and lasting value. We promise.

The Honda TreeFundIn 2004 Honda New Zealand initiated the Honda TreeFund, which funds the planting of ten native trees for every new car sold, with individual Honda agents funding an additional three trees.

Trees are planted locally within the customer’s purchase region in association with Regional Councils, assisting in the restoration of communities’ biodiversity. This has proven extremely successful with over 75,000 native trees funded every year since 2004. You can see the latest total of trees funded by visiting our website.

Honda purchasers and the wider public are welcome to donate to the TreeFund and join tree planting days with Honda staff and their local Regional Council.
