Monday, October 21 From the British IslesKen-David Masur conductor GRIME Near Midnight BRITTEN Sea Interludes from Peter GrimesMENDELSSOHN Symphony No. 3 (Scottish)

Newly appointed Principal Conductor Ken-David Masur leads the Civic Orchestra in this program inspired by the landscapes of the British Isles, including a 2012 piece by Scottish composer Helen Grime. Mendelssohn’s 1829 visit to Edinburgh was the genesis of his early sketches for Symphony No. 3, which captures the drama and romance of the Highlands. Britten’s Sea Interludes use shifting tonal colors to evoke the seashore of a coastal fishing village.

Sunday, December 8 Strauss and ProkofievErina Yashima conductor Annie Rosen mezzo-soprano STRAUSS Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry PranksBERIO Folk Songs PROKOFIEV Symphony No. 5

Former CSO Solti Conducting Apprentice Erina Yashima returns to conduct Strauss’ tone poem depicting misadventures and pranks of a peasant folk hero, as well as Prokofiev’s sanguine Symphony No. 5, which celebrates the spirit of humankind. Annie Rosen, an alumna of the Ryan Opera Center at Lyric Opera of Chicago, sings a suite of familiar folk songs from around the globe that are reinterpreted through Berio’s imaginative musical language.

Monday, February 3Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony Ken-David Masur conductor Patrick Godon organSTRAVINSKY Petrushka (1947 version)SAINT-SAËNS Symphony No. 3 (Organ)

Stravinsky’s famous and boundary-pushing ballet garnered international acclaim and solidified his reputation, both at the time of the premiere and in this 1947 revision. His extraordinary music is paired with the magnificent Organ Symphony, which demonstrates Saint-Saëns’ skill for crafting delicate, languid melodies and rich orchestral color. Guest soloist Patrick Godon showcases Orchestra Hall’s mighty Casavant Frères organ as part of this glorious work.

Shostakovich’s tenth Symphony displays the composer’s full emotional range, from the dark, brooding first movement, to the sharp, sarcastic scherzo.
