President’s Message By Brent Packer, PE Civil Source Civil Engineers Make the Difference – They Build on the Quality of Life ASCE Utah Section Newsletter February 2008 Congratulations to BYU Students Mark Butler and Wendy Thompson for winning the ASCE Central Utah Branch scholarships! This year National Engineers Week will be observed February 17 – 23, 2008. Communities throughout the country will be hosting a variety of activities recognizing engineers’ contributions to society and encouraging young people to learn more about the exciting profession of engineering. Engineers help transform and enhance the quality of life for people in our own community and around the world. In order for technology and engineering to progress, the next generation must be well versed in science, math, and other technical subjects. Through our combined efforts we can make a difference motivating young people to become the next generation of engineers. ASCE provides resources to help us. The Younger Member Forum, through a SPEA grant, has obtained candy structure kits that can be used in a classroom setting to teach children about structures and how they work. ASCE National has pamphlets, work books, PowerPoint presentations, etc., that can be used in a classroom to promote and teach students about civil engineering. I’ve recently volunteered in my daughter’s fourth grade elementary class to go and give a presentation about civil engineering using the materials I’ve just mentioned. I’m looking forward to it. If any of you are interested in doing the same, you can contact me or another ASCE Section or Branch officer to obtain more information and materials. As part of National Engineers Week, the Utah Engineers Council (UEC) is hosting the Engineers Week Banquet at the Rotunda at the Utah State Capital Friday, February 15, 2008. The reception begins at 5:30 pm and dinner at 7:00 pm. Regular admission is $45.00, student and senior (65+) admission is $22.50, and reservation for a table of 8 is $360.00. Many engineering awards including UEC Engineer of the Year, Engineering Educator of the Year of the Year, and Student Scholarships Awards will be presented. leadership and scholastic achievements as she has attended the University of Utah. Don’t forget that Engineer’s Week is February 17-23, 2008. This is a great opportunity to give outreach presentations to elementary, junior high, and high schools. If you would like to visit your children’s school to show children that engineering is fun, please contact me at [email protected] or (801) 931-3305. Micheal G. Central Utah Branch We would like to thank Dr. Kyle Rollins for the presentation he gave at the January branch meeting. He provided us with an interesting look at pile foundations located near slopes and what results he found from field testing. Our next luncheon meeting will be held on Thursday, February 21st, as part of Engineering Week at

BYU. More details will be sent to branch members as they become available.

NOT ENOUGH ENGINEERING HELP? TRUE ENGINEERING

Why pass up work or ship DRAFTING to India when you can keep ENGINEERING in the States?

We have a completely equipped office and staff of surveying/engineering professionals from entry to

senior levels.

We can work in the background or on the front line asyou refer, or as needs dictate and will travel to the

project and project meetings as necessary.

We work with other professionals throughout the country.

Thomas N. True, P.E.

We would like to congratulate Mark Butler and Wendy Thompson, who each received an ASCE Central Utah Branch scholarship from funds made available by the Utah Section. They have both been very involved with the ASCE BYU Student Chapter during their studies at BYU. Mark has helped with several of the service projects, was a member of the concrete canoe team, and was elected as treasurer of the student chapter. Wendy has put in many hours on service projects over the past two school years and has appreciated the opportunity of getting to know the people that she has both served and worked with. We wish them our best in their schooling and preparation for the future. 888-988-5090, x 104 Eric R. Dixon, P.E. www.trueesi.com
