    The Leaders of the UnionGENERAL MEADE WINFIELD SCOTT ABRAHAM LINCOLN

    General MeadeGeneral Meade is most famous for

    being the commander of the Unionforces at Gettysburg. The battle wentwell for the North, and it is generallyconsidered a turning point in the war.

    Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln was the president of the

    North during the Civil War. In fact, his electionwas the nal straw that caused the South tosecede. He was responsible for the EmancipationProclamation, which declared all slaves in theConfederacy to be free.

    Wineld Scott A Mexican war hero, Wineld

    Scotts most important contribution tothe North was his Anaconda Plan. Thisstrategy, though initially shunned, waseventually employed by the North.

    Jackson did get killed.General Lee was never ableto replace him

    Cold HarborThis was a terrible battle for General Grant.Despite outnumbering the enemy vastly, Grantlost. He attacked a heavily fortied position, andit cost him dearly.

    Camp Life[war is] short periods of intense fear and longperiods of intense boredom - J C Smuts.

    Soldiers lived in cramped, unsanitary conditions with bad food and ofteninadequate supplies. The North did, in general, have better, and morenumerous supplies than the South.

    Men who deserted were hunted down and executed.

    In general, life inthe North was muchbetter than that of

    life in the South

    The North Economy BoomsDue to a need by the government for weapons,food, clothing etc. the manufacturers thatproduced these things made large prots. $$$

    Abraham Lincoln: Fighter for Justice or a Tyrant? Abraham Lincoln, in order to combat disorder in the Union (riots,spies, etc.) took away many liberties in places, like Habius Corpus andenforced marshal law

    Unfortunately, wages did not rise with prots, andlooked something like this:

    While slavery was forever banned, equality wouldtake a very long time to get.

    The Freedmen Must beProtected The North enacted many laws, like the 14thand 15th amendment, hat protected African

    Americans by protecting their rights.

    Lincolns assassination may have caused thereconstruction to not go as smoothly. He hadtried to forgive and forget. Had he beenpres iden t , Lincoln could have led thereconstruction, and the nation, far better than

    Johnson.
