everal days after the Christ-Child wasborn, three wise men came to offer theirgifts of gold, frankincense and myrhh.

This day became known to the Christianworld as the Epiphany. The momentousoccasion also announced to the outsideworld the birth of the promised Messiah, through the word-of-mouth declarationsof these three wise men among their kinson their return to their respectivehomelands. Who knows howmany transformations of heartwere born among the Hebrewsand among these three wise menskins who had for many centuriesbeen awaiting the birth of thispromised Messiah. Together withthe gifts of gold, frankincense, andmyrhh, these transformations of heart arealso gifts to the Christ-Child, perhaps morevaluable and unquantiable.

Today, Christians over the worldcan also celebrate their own personalEpiphanies, offering to the new-born Christ-Child their own personal transformations ofheart on their journey of faith to holiness.

My own personal Epiphany on thisnew year began when I saw the moviePedro Calungsod: Batang Martir with myparents.

We entered the almost empty cinemawith only some ve people watching themovie, At rst, I was amused by the thoughtthat unlike others who were queueing

in other cinemas showing Vice Gandasor Bimbys movie, I was here to watch alm biography. I later realized the deeperimplication of such reality I was seeing atthat time: nowadays, more and more peoplewould rather take for granted what couldnourish their souls and instead seek therelative happiness brought by mundaneentertainment and pleasure. I could notdeny this fact because, I bet, I would alsohave been one of those people queueingfor another movie if only we were notrequired at school to watch the lm of PedroCalungsod.

    Idolatry, lust, jealousy, hatred, anger,

betrayal - these were just some of themany illnesses of man depicted in the lmand which the missionaries, like Pedro

Calungsod, wanted to heal by introducingChrist to the natives of Isla de Ladrones, the barbaric Chamorros. All the sacricesof the mission of Pedro, with Fr. Diegoand several other lay persons, were trulyheroic. As depicted in the lm, as long asone has steadfast faith in God, nothing canreally be deemed impossible. No wonderPedro Calungsod became a saint, and wascanonized last October 21, 2012. He trulyproved to the world that it is still possiblefor the youth of today to step up and make apositive change.

Perhaps the youth of today like me thinkthat it is impossible to follow in the footsteps

of our very own saint Pedro Calungsod. Wealways have the wrong notion that the path

to holiness is only for those who are in to thepriesthood and religious vocations. Come tothink of it, isnt everyone called to holiness? You and I belong to Christs family, for Hehimself has chosen us before the foundation of theworld, to be saints, to be blameless in His sight,

for love of Him, having predestined us to be Hisadopted children through Jesus Christ, accordingto the purpose of his Will (Eph 1,4-5).

We may think we are too young andincapable of doing extraordinary things, butwasnt Pedro Calungsod also young whenhe responded to His vocation? To tread thepath to holiness, we may not necessarilystart with something big or heavy. Each

small step can be a springboard towards

    Tips forGrowth

The Jaro Parish Youth Ministry(JPYM) helped establish a ministryfor children here in our parish.

We invited children, 10 to 13 years ofage, to sing during the Viva Parol. However, only the Barangay Tabuc SubaProper responded to this invitation. The experience has helped the childrena lot. It is a good idea to reach out tothese children and train them on stage.Children can as well play and at thesame time offer their talents to God.This has inspired the youth because ofthe challenge to wake up early everymorning. This sacrice has become anenjoyment while preparing for theirpresentation.

Be Realistic.Dont set goals that are too hard toachieve. Youll get discouraged andpossibly stop trying if you dont seeenough progress. Set Incremental Goals.Instead of deciding to lose 25 pounds, make your goal to lose ve pounds. When you lose that, set another goal tolose ve more pounds. Learn Something New.Taking a class to improve your skills ortrying a new exercise class can help youadvance at work or lose more weight.

always to go to the streets. For what? To roamaround and enjoy the beautiful scenery? I dontthink so! When we are called by our Holy Fatherto go the streets, he challenges us to go out fromour comfort zones and meet people who areperhaps ignored, ostracized, maltreated andunevangelized. Our encounter with them can bean opportunity to make them feel and experiencethe immensity of Gods love and the genuine careand concern of the Church for them.

9 Ways to Jump-Start Your Life

    Demonstrate Gods Love!

Look for a Mentor.Finding someone who is doing what youd liketo achieve can motivate you to go after what youwant. Ramp up Your Faith.Trusting that youll get support from your higherpower can provide the fuel you need to moveforward. Faith is a power tool. Love Yourself.Self-love makes you want to take good care ofyourself, which can help you get in shape. It alsomotivates you to go after what would make youhappy.

We can be agents of epiphany! Wecan demonstrate Gods love and reveal Hisabiding presence to others especially the poorand the needy. And we can also experienceGods love through them in return.

May we respond to Pope Franciscall for hands-on service to the poor andspiritual healing for alienated Christiansand homeless families.

---ooo000ooo---We would like to commend the

Parish Social Action Ministry for takingthe initiative of making a survey of oldand bedridden indigents within ourparish, with the desire to reach out tothem in the near future. If not for thisinitiative, many of our inrmed seniorcitizens could have been just forgottenand die without receiving their spiritualand even material needs. This effort canbe an epiphanyat its best!

---ooo000ooo---I would like to encourage all the

faithful especially the parishioners tofollow the column of our beloved parishpriest, The Pastor Speaks. Let us allowhis thoughts and sentiments to lead usto reect deeply upon the events of ourparish and to guide our attitudes andbehavior so that there will be order andharmony among us.

Be Kinder to Yourself. When you make the effort to be kinderyourself, its easier to get past mistakDont try to be perfect and accept yolimitations without getting discourageEvery act of self- kindness helps buself-love. Take the First Step.To accomplish a goal, you need to take trst step to reach it. Ask for Help.People pleasers do not like to ask othfor things they need. But its importando that! Ask friends to let you know if thhear about a job opening or to encourayou to watch your eating.

our goal. We can start by repenting ofour sins, going to Confession, and askingGod for the forgiveness of our sins. Itwould truly be a great way to start 2014right.

We can then sanctify our lives bydoing ordinary works in extraordinaryways. Offering each task we do everyday to our Lord - doing it to the best

of our ability with constant prayer isalready a way to holiness. We may justbe sweeping the oor or washing thedishes but if we are conscious of thepresence of Christ in our lives, we cancertainly strive for holiness. We mayat rst encounter challenges like thetemptation of mediocrity or laziness, butas long as we ask God for the fortitude tobe able take up our daily Cross, we canmake it through the day.

It is also important that we alwaysbear in mind that the carrying out ofour little duties for the day is our act oflove for God. Such love for the innitegoodness of God should always be oursource of strength especially in facingdifculties. In that way, we dont only

respond to Gods call to holiness but we alsostrengthen our relationship with Him as ourFather.

The call to holiness is not simply for afew people. It is a call for everyone rich orpoor, young or old. Let us not simply settle formediocrity when we can excel in what we do forit is one way of nurturing the gifts of what Godhas given us. It is one way towards holiness. Letus not be swayed by material things or what theworld or other people dictate us. Let us not resort

to something less just because everybodys doingit. Learn to stand up and make a positive change. We can all do these through the humble act ofdoing ordinary things and offering them up toour Lord. Let us all be inspired of the many saintsthat have striven for holiness in the simple wayspossible.

If theres a good summary of what I havewritten so far, I think it would be what SaintJosemaria Escriva once wrote in his book,Friends of God and let me end this by quotingit: Certainly our goal is both lofty and difcult toattain. But please do not forget that people are not bornholy. Holiness is forged through a constant interplayof Gods grace and the correspondence of man. As oneof the early Christian writers says, referring to unionwith God, Everything that grows begins small. It isby constant and progressive feeding that it gradually

grows big. So I say to you, if you want become a thorough-going Christian andknow you are willing, even though you oftnd it difcult to conquer yourself or to keclimbing upwards with this poor body of ou then you will have to be very attentive the minutest of details, for the holiness thOur Lord demands of you is to be achievby carrying out with love of God your woand your daily duties, and these will almoalways consist of small realities.

The lessons Ive learned from thmovie Pedro Calungsod have giveme so much transformations of heart thI pray will turn into personal virtueand given realization through mtransformed attitude with my fellowmeI hope to offer these transformed attitudas gifts to our new-born Messiah on thday, the Solemnity of the Epiphany.

Finally, let me ask you my frienwhat is your own personal Epiphany thnew year 2014. What gifts have you mind to offer to the Christ-Child? Whpersonal revelations has the new-boChrist-Child given you to jump-stayour own journey of faith and holiness

    Happy Epiphany to all!

The children also participatedin the Christmas Presentation lastDecember 24, 2013 as they sungChristmas Carols. Also, they joinedthe choir at 6 pm Mass last December29, 2013. They enjoyed singing andthey have fun. They bear this inmind: Go, dont be afraid and serve.

Pope Francis words were veryclear: You are a gift and a treasure inthe Church! Always convey the powerof the Gospel! Do not be afraid! Alwaysfeel joy and enthusiasm for communionin the Church! (Angelus, 19 May 2013).

    ...from page 1

Our Holy Father in his Apostolic Exhoration,Evangelium Gaudii, would say, I prefer a Churchwhich is bruised, hurting and dirty because it hasbeen out on the streets, rather than a Church whichis unhealthy from being conned and from clingingto its own security. He also added, I do not want aChurch concerned with being at the center and thenends by being caught up in a web of obsessions andprocedures.

Furthermore, seminarians should look attheir priests as older brothers

Of course, New Year will never be completewithout a Media Noche after a New Year toastproposed by no other than Archbishop AngelLagdameo. Priests have also their own way ofenjoying themselves. While others are blowingtorotots, some would light pasirit and otherswould play on balloons , sat on them until theyeventually blow up.

Our Parish Priest, Msgr Higinio Velardethanked all who came over, and ArchbishopLagdameo concluded the gathering with hisshort message and nal blessing. The Parish hasgiven simple presents to those who attendedalong with the looked forward gift from theArchbishop.

Those who attended went back to theirplaces of assignment with smiles on their faces

for such a wonderful experience of familyamong the company of their brother-priests.

    Bibliya?

Typhoon Yolanda has leftbehind her a legacy of tearsand heartaches, when she

swept away big buildings andproperties and even thousands ofprecious human lives. Aside fromthis dreadful calamity, there wasthe Pork Barrel Scam which shockedour country as news of dishonestyand nancial greed was laid barebefore us. As if these two nationaldisasters were not enough to grieveus, cases of drug addiction came intoview. From the smallest barrio to thebiggest metropolis, crimes committedby drug addicts are made known bynewspapers, radio broadcasts andother forms of communications. We

were also hounded by heavy drinking, excessive smoking and gambling.

Can we not make our countrymore peaceful by cutting down ourvices and malpractices? Can wenot turn to other activities that canbuild better relationships moreunderstanding more cooperation more sympathy more love?

There is no better medicine to ourailing relationships than prayer. There

is nobody more forgiving and more consideratethan God. The Lord knows that we are onlyhuman and that we are weak. He knows that wehave pitfalls and so He is giving us the chanceto go back to His graces through prayer. Letus throw away our pride and make piety andhumility as our maintenance medicine. We mustnot claim to have a complete knowledge of ourReligion. We have to understand that we needeach other in order to be saved. If we are ashamedto go straight to God, let us ask the Holy Spirit forwisdom, knowledge and intelligence that maygive us the code of salvation. We understandthis, but, if we do not have the wisdom to applythem, we will go the wrong way. Pray to theHoly Spirit for wisdom to understand Godscommandments and the Words of the Gospel. Letus pray the Rosary daily and ask for the Blessed

Mothers intercession so that we will see the pathof salvation in every decade. Let us go to Massas often as we can and understand the Gospel. We can even pray as we travel. Let us alwayskeep God in our hearts and pray to Him that thiscoming New Year will see a positive change inour lives.

We must remember that every moment ismaking us older. The activities we are havingare simply entering us so that we cannot feel thehardening of our bones and the wrinkling of our

skin. Nobody can say that he can out livany other human being.

As we cross the thresholds of anothyear, let us build a new horizon of truin God and a love for our neighborLet us change the map of our journeyDeviate from the road of bad inclinationand follow the path of devotion to Gowith prayers as the radiant light thleads our way. Forget vices. Practicneighborliness and positive values thacan strengthen communities. Removthe clouds of selshness and scatter thdrops of charity and compassion. Throaway the seeds of jealousy and plant thbeautiful stalks of community building

Let this coming New Year put smile on the Lords face and inspire Him

to wave His hands of protection oveus keeping us away from sickness anplagues closing our eyes to destructivpractices opening our eyes to thglories of heaven making us desire live an eternity with Him when we leavthis world moving around the choirs oangels singing praises for all eternitbeginning with Happy New Year thYear!

    HOPING FOR HOPEAlberto H. Yanga

During Christmas people rejoiceBecause its mall sale for food, clothes and toys

Plenty of the latest tech cellphone or tabletAnd its time also to change the old TV set.

People like to wear when New Year comesClothes with polka dots as lucky charmOn the table are round fruits at 13 each

To bring fortune and make us rich.

The air is rocked with deafening explosions

The sky is lit with blinding color fusionsNew year is greeted with lots of madness

Everyone is happy, theres no room for sadness.

But lost in these traditions are the spiritOf Christmas and Jesus Christs BirthOf New Year and the hope it brings

The coming of our Redeemer, the King of all kings.

And so I hope that people will understandHow Christmas and New Year can be grand

Renew our faith and remain hopefulFor He has come, Jesus Our Lord and Savior!
