What is CLAHRC SY?

• Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care for South Yorkshire.

• One of nine CLAHRCs across England funded for 5 years, from October 2008, as part of the National Institute of Health (NIHR) infrastructure.

• Designed to develop mutually beneficial partnerships between higher education institutions and NHS organisations to improve patient outcomes through applied health research and local implementation of the results.

• The conduct of high quality applied health research

• Implementing findings from research in clinical practice

• Increasing the capacity of NHS organisations to engage with and apply research, including continuing professional development for professionals and managers

CLAHRC SY Research and Implementation Themes

CLAHRC for South Yorkshire

• To improve the health and well being for people with long term conditions (LTC) in South Yorkshire.

• To develop new approaches to service design and delivery using a patient centred user experience methodology

• To utilise an innovative model for conducting applied research and evidence translation which is embedded in the self-management, self care agenda for people with LTC

• To promote the transfer of knowledge from applied research into practice and facilitate the implementation of new knowledge into health service policy practice and commissioning

• To encourage commercial exploitation, where appropriate, for the benefit of the South Yorkshire economy.

• To use advances in health technologies- enhancing self-management, improving access, choice and personalised care for people with long-term conditions.

• To inform and respond to the needs for service commissioning within South Yorkshire

• CLAHRC research themes are embedded in self management, self care and innovation technology agenda for LTC (Equity & Excellence 2010, Operating framework for the NHS 2008/9, Our Health, Our Care, Our Say.’ 2006)

• The User Centred HealthCare Design theme links to valuing and using patient experience alongside the traditional dimensions of effectiveness and efficiency (Equity & Excellence 2010, Darzi Review, 2008)

• The Knowledge into Action theme utilises a unique distributed model of evidence translation and change behaviour. (Tooke report, Cooksey Translation gap)

• CLAHRC SY has a translation theme that particularly addresses the role of research in commissioning

Major inequalities reflected in health across South Yorkshire

• people in poorer areas of Barnsley are twice as likely to die prematurely as those in the more affluent areas

• in Sheffield there is a 14 year difference in life expectancies between the best and worst off neighbourhoods

South Yorkshire has a strong track record of identifying and tackling chronic/life long conditions which represent major public health burden

Rotherham Health Authority study showed 29% of stroke deaths had avoidable factors and 44% of those with hypertension (Payne et al Local confidential inquiry into avoidable factors in deaths from stroke. 1993;307:1027-30)

Building sustainability in CLAHRC themes • Close partnership working with NIHR Research Design

Service for Yorkshire & The Humber in order to strengthening CLAHRC themes’ access to health economics & statistics expertise (especially for themes based in the NHS where these skills are rare)

• Develop bids for further NIHR funding• Provide funds for protected time for researchers to write

Developing Research Capacity in NHS Organisations (1)

Building an organisational environment that supports the development of research capacity and culture. Working with R&D Leads & teams to:• Undertake a baseline audit (using the ARC for CLAHRC

tool): to describe and map strengths and gaps in relation to research capacity development in CLAHRC SY partner NHS Trusts

• To support planning of further research capacity development at an organisational level

• Identify ways in which CLAHRC can help RCD• Provide information, support and networking opportunities

ARC for CLAHRC Audit Tool

• An audit tool for measuring Research Capacity Development at an organisational level

• It is evidence based:• Built on a theoretical model of RCD principles• RCD indicators were generated using Nominal Group

Technique with R&D community in East Midlands/South Yorkshire

• Piloted with NHS trusts

• Adapted and developed for CLAHRC by a Working Group of South Yorkshire NHS trust R&D Leads • Now including metrics and measures for each indicator

CLAHRC Support for RCD in NHS Organisations

• Organisations Support Lead, 1 day per week over the lifetime of CLAHRC to support RCD planning & facilitate communication between CLAHRC Core Team & partner trusts.

• ARC for CLAHRC Resource Bank • Electronic links to a wide range of Information, guidance & resources to

support each indicator within the ARC tool, e.g. links to relevant local university higher degree information; Learning Beyond Registration opportunities; NIHR and other Fellowships; ESRC Case Studentships
