TIMBER FLOATINGOn a backdrop of water and forests, the land of the raftsmen offers a unique and well-preserved environment. The waterways are reminiscent of the tim-ber rafts that were once floated down from the forests of the Morvan to Paris.

Risking their lives, boating on “branches” made of logs simply bound together with “rouettes” (links made of flexible hazel tree branches), raftsmen supplied Paris with fire wood for nearly 400 years starting in the 16th century!

From Clamecy, it was an eleven-day journey at the end of which raftsmen had to walk back home, bringing with them the latest news. A statue of a raftsman can be seen on Bethlehem Bridge in Clamecy, keeping the memory of these tough workmen alive.

CLAMECY OLD TOWNLocated 2 hours away from Paris, on the doorstep of the Morvan and in the heart of the land of the raftsmen, Clamecy displays its medieval charm.

As soon as you enter the old town, the collegiate church of St Martin will captivate you. Let your eyes wander along its 55 meter high delicate stone filigrees, central rosace and ballet of gargoyles that have been defying time since the 15th century.

Nestled at the base of this magnificent structure, the architectural complex of the old town, dating from the 15th to the 20th century, is a protected sector.

In the cool shade of the narrow streets you will

encounter many wonders: ochre coloured wood-timbered houses, mascarons animating the facades, wrought iron shop signs… not to mention the “Saint accroupi” (crouching Saint) that appears to spring out from the walls at the corner of rue de la Monnaie and de la Fontaine des Mûres?

You are invited to stroll and admire the flower beds, old shop fronts, and beautifully arranged café terraces… delightful and thoughtful touches for the benefit of those coming to visit the inhabitants of the land of the raftsmen who are so proud of their beautiful town.

THE CANAL DU NIVERNAISConnecting the Loire basin to the Seine via the river Yonne, the 180km long Canal du Nivernais is greatly prized by boaters. It is the second busiest Canal in France after the Canal du Midi. Don’t resist the call of a slow meander through original and lush scenery, punctuated by the 110 locks found on the canal between Saint-Léger-des-Vignes and Auxerre!

Let yourself be overwhelmed by the remarkable artistic feats that are the voûtes de la Colancelle (Collancelle vaults) or the sixteen-lock ladder of Sardy-lès-Epiry… not forgetting an unmissable stop at the Clamecy marina.

CHEVROCHES VILLAGEYou can still feel the atmosphere of the old li-mestone quarries when strolling along the canal or the narrow streets of the village.

Each structure: church, town walls, houses, stairs, low walls… reminds us of the hard work and skill of the old stone masons and master quarrymen.

Charles Loupot, the well-known poster designer who lived in the village, drew from it his inspiration… His pieces of art are now exhibited in the Art and History museum in Clamecy where you can also see Gallo-Roman remains discovered in archaeological excavations recently carried out in the village.

LES ROCHES DE BASSEVILLE (Basseville rocks)Guidigo: a free and very smart app that you can download to your tablet or Smartphone. With pictures and comments, it tells you the geologi-cal story of the Basseville Rocks along a defined 1,7km walk.

The site is also a climbing hotspot with routes from 15 m to 40 m high, as well as a hub for mountain bike enthusiasts: the ideal site for nature lovers!

Guidigo tablets can be borrowed from Clamecy Haut Nivernais Tourist Office - For further information, contact 03 86 27 02 51

DON’T LEAVE WITHOUT HAVING…

… visited the collegiate church in Clamecy:

christened in 1438, it is a magnificent example of flamboyant Gothic architecture, with its portal ornamented with scenes of its patron Saint’s life, its stone filigrees, its central rosace window enamelled with stained glass, its facade featuring a thousand sculptures and its tower made of stones coming from the Basseville rocks!

Inside is another special feature: a Cavaillé-Coll organ, created in 1864 by one of the most famous French dynasties of organ builders, and perfectly restored.

… contemplated the St Lazare Chapel in Varzy.

Dating from the end of the 12th century and located in the forest of Ronceaux, this structure was built within a community that housed people suffering from leprosy until the end of the 15th century. Registered as a historic monument since 1931, it was restored from 1977 to 1982 and is now a must-see attraction… external visit only.

… admired the view from the chapel de la Tête-Ronde (Round-Head) in Menou! An outstanding panorama over the surrounding countryside… you breathe and get a feeling of grandeur! Restored around 1950, this chapel is for Menou what the Sacré-Cœur is for Paris: a marvel! It contains frescoes from the famous poster designer Charles Loupot representing highly stylized evan-gelical people… An absolute must-see…

… had a picnic in Vauvert Park in Clamecy:7 hectares of outstanding property, located in the Beuvron area, with colourful flowerbeds framing a manor house dating from the 17th century.

… passed by the church of Notre-Dame-de-Bethléem in Clamecy:

this surprising piece of modern architecture was inspired by Oriental art. It was built of reinforced concrete in 1926, listed as a historic monument in 2000 and labelled 20th century heritage in 2005. Here remains the memory of the bishopric of Beth-lehem, exiled to Clamecy in the 13th century where it remained until 1801. Visits of the exterior only, except on European Heritage Days.

These pleasures of the palate, both on plates and in glasses, are celebrated in restaurants of course, but also during popular festivals. And so the famous Andouillette de Clamecy, created at the beginning of

the 19th century by “La Mère Chapuis” (Mrs Chapuis) and then very popular among the coal merchants of Paris, is celebrated each year during the first weekend of July at the andouillette and white wine festival.

Born the eldest son of a locksmith in Clamecy, Claude Tillier belonged to the middle class but considered himself part of the “clan of the poor”. Holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Literature, he became a proctor in Soissons and in Paris before opening a private school in Clamecy. Obligatory military service took him on an expedition to Spain in 1823, after which he returned to Clamecy where he resumed his school teacher activity. He proved to be innovative and was appointed Director of the secondary school in 1830, but fell out with the authorities and resigned.

In 1831, Claude Tillier founded a short-lived opposition newspaper, The Independent, then left Clamecy in 1841 for Nevers where he became editor of the Association. This is where he wrote most of his works and died of consumption on the 12th October 1844.

His works:

• Two tales: Comment le Chanoine eut peur (How the Canon got scared) and Comment le Capitaine eut peur (How the Captain got scared).

• Two novels: Mon Oncle Benjamin (My Uncle Benjamin) and Belle Plante et Cornélius (Beautiful Plant and Cornélius), both published in the Association.

• A narrative: De l’Espagne (Of Spain).

• Several series of pamphlets, also published in the Association.

WELCOME TO “MON ONCLE BENJAMIN”“Being loved means more than being rich as it means being happy” Claude Tillier

This sentence sums up perfectly the story and thoughts of My Uncle Benjamin… Discover, along an itinerary illustrated by 14 panels or with the Guidigo App, the life and transgressions of this lively character!

From Clamecy to Corvol-l’Orgueilleux, through Moulot, La Pouge and the nearby Castle of St Pierre-du-Mont, get to know My Uncle Benjamin, famous character of the novel by Claude Tillier, immortalized on screen by Jacques Brel, the famous French actor and singer!

Each panel along this signposted route displays the most important scenes and the exquisite dialogues of the famous movie My uncle Benjamin, directed by Edouard Molinaro in 1969! Go and discover this novel and this unusual character… an original way of adding culture to a walk or bike ride…

To sum up…Benjamin is a doctor who likes the fine things in life, a drinker who is in debt. The story takes

place in the 18th century in Clamecy and its surroundings. The picturesque characters really lived in this setting dear to Claude Tillier, whose enemies were the mighty and the vain.

Published in 1842, this novel is an ode to life, friendship and excess of all types. The sole remedy for his poor patients who cannot pay: joy via good wine.

Through Benjamin, Claude Tilier’s critique of society can be heard. An objector more than a rebel, he wants to come out on top by winning over the jokers.

Some people like to boast about having read My uncle Ben-jamin many times. French singer Georges Brassens was one, who used to say: “Anyone who has not read “My Uncle Benjamin” can’t pretend to be one of my friends”…

Claude Tillier used to say: “Eating is a need of the stomach; drinking is a need of the soul”
