Jacques Jules
BOUFFIL(1783 - 1868)
Six Clarinet TriosOpus 7, Nos. 1-3Opus 8, Nos. 1-3
Jacques Jules BOUFIL (or BOUFFIL) (1783-1868) was a Parisian clarinetist and composer whose careerspanned the reign of Napoleon, the restoration of the Bourbon dynasty, the Revolution of 1830 and theformation of the Second Republic. He studied under Lefvre at the Conservatoire de Musique where he wonfirst prize in 1806 and was awarded a pair of French-made Bb and C clarinets, an award which remained inplace until 1817. From 1807 to 1830 he was solo clarinetist of the Opera-Comique de Paris and for a numberof years performed with a celebrated wind quintet the members of which included Louis Franois Dauprat(Horn), Joseph Guillou (flute), Antoine Henry (bassoon) and August Georges Gustave Vogt (oboe).Bouffils compositions were almost exclusively for the clarinet. His six trios, within Opuses 7 and 8, representa major contribution to the clarinet literature of any time trios for all seasons, if you will and although clearlyintended for professionals in a concert setting their melodies and musical conversations are a delight andchallenge to all amateurs. For those players who have mastered the art of circular breathing, these trios willoffer a particular pleasure, because there is no convenient place in the fast movements for mere mortals tobreathe, notwithstanding an occasional , to suggest least inconvenient points where one might inhale quicklywithout ruining a phrase.
Until the emergence of library catalogs of the world at ones fingertips on the internet, I was unaware of anyof the trios past Opus 7, No. 1, which I played routinely in my teachers clarinet trio. At this writing, the sixscores are freely available for downloading (in Finale 3.7 format) at the web site
http://www csudh edu/oliver/clarmusi/clarmusi htm
I have dedicated this edition to my late teacher Ralph Sarber who throughout his career wanted nothing morethan for young people to learn to play the clarinet, to bask in its literature and to love its versatility.
Happy playing all!

I have dedicated this edition to my late teacher Ralph Sarber who throughout his career wanted nothing morethan for young people to learn to play the clarinet, to bask in its literature and to love its versatility.
Happy playing all!
