Looking back over the past year, Modesto Traditional Jazz Society has made tremendous progress. Progress cannot always be measured in black and white like the notes on the music staff. The choruses are not always written down, but they say so much more about what is going on.

The Jazz Society Board has not always called the right tunes or played the correct chords, but we, as a group, have tried to offer a performance that pleased our audience…the members.

It has been a year since we lost one of our founders, Deck Hogin. We all have missed his friendship, contributions, and especially, his music. Not a meeting goes by that I don’t think about Deck on stage organizing the jam, calling the tunes, and playing those sweet solos. I appreciate those who have stepped up and kept the music playing.

Our venue at the Moose lodge tested our patience with the expenses, the parking, and other misfortunes…but overall we had a place to gather and they tried to meet our needs while the music played on. In September, we took a giant step and ventured out to a new meeting place. We moved to the Clarion Inn. There have been some surprises here too, but we are settling in and hope to have a great year.

In 2010, we again jointly sponsored the Second Annual 11th Street Jazz Festival held the fourth weekend of May in Downtown Modesto. The weekend featured Jazz trumpet great, Jon Faddis, and straight from the streets of New Orleans, Doreen and Lawrence Ketchens, plus an outstanding local artist, Mike Vax. As a new feature, a Youth Jazz Festival was held at the Gallo Center. Those that attended heard outstanding performances at every venue.

We have started making plans for our festival in 2011. The name will be changed to The Modesto Jazz Festival and it will be held at the Clarion Inn on the weekend of May 22-23. Check the Jazzette for updates every month. Better yet, let someone know what you would like to contribute!

Through many donations of money, time, and raffle prizes we have finally begun to see our treasury grow, and we will start the New Year with a positive outlook. Throughout the year, our challenges have been stimulating, taxing, and difficult, but never boring.

Odds and Ends: Next Board Meeting January 25th at Jan’s Place There will be another special Festival Board Meeting on December 30th

at Jan’s Place. (Musically speaking Continued on page 4)

— Jan Leer, President, MTJS

Once again, a big thank-you to Sherry Hubbart and her son Ed for all

the special Christmas items she is donating to our December Raffle. She has also secured another Jackson Rancheria get-away to be auctioned off. This is your chance to help out the club and maybe take home some great gifts.

Remember…Our meeting date will be Sunday, December 19th, at the Clarion Inn, with jam sets beginning at 12:00 Noon. Dance, dance, dance! Put on your dancin’ shoes, bring a friend, and join us. The guest band for December 19th is again the Catsnjammer Jazz Band. . Hope to see lots of jammers for the other sets. You are in for some terrific live music!

Please continue to enjoy the Clarion food and bar service because that is what pays our “rent.”

Wishing you and yours a wonderful, musical, holiday season!

set," says Gene Berthelsen, the band's head jammer.

The seven-piece Catsnjammer Jazz Band, formed in 1980, performs regularly around Sacramento and at clubs and festivals as far away as Canada and Las Vegas. The band, over the past several years, has continued to grow as a highly disciplined, and if not restrained, at least responsible organization. It is featured each year at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee and has recently been popular at festivals and jazz societies up and down the West Coast.

Put on your dancing shoes or just kick back and enjoy!

I’ve always said that big band music is my favorite type of music and it was a wonderful big band day at the Clarion Inn with Knight Sounds Big Band providing the tunes and the dance floor got plenty of action. We had some very nice items donated for the raffle but missed Tony Cosentino and his excellent wines. I hope Tony will be back with us soon. Thank you Micky Van Hook for the beautiful Christmas Cactus. Carol Harbart, Irene and Paul Stolberg, Phyllis & Forrest Jackson, and Jerry Cox also contributed items…thank you. And sorry to those of you I missed. Sheri Hubbart will be providing the beautiful gift baskets again this December. There will also be another auction on a trip to Jackson Rancheria. So come prepared.. $$$ Our guests in November were, Teonna Clark of Modesto, Nora Alee Dale from Galt, Shirley Groefsema of Gustine, Margaret Barker, Steve Renwood & Anna Munchall, Joe Battaglia, Beth Glidewell of Modesto. Also Patti & Mike Schneider from Acampo….I had the best time talking with the two of them and I hope they come back very soon. Mike..…I do have pictures in the hat and they’re on facebook. “Welcome” to our new members… Martin Martinez and Clarence Gomes. Many thanks to Dr. William & Esther Torrens, Ann & Al Fosco, and Marlene Swarts who made donations this month. Mac McCarter had a stroke and brain hemorrhage and is recovering in a convalescent home near his son in Fremont. We wish him a speedy recovery. Skeet Bowden is staying with family while getting her strength back. I hope she will be back with us soon. Larry Crowl is in Doctors Hospital (but should be home by the time you read this.). After suffering severe back and leg pain he was taken to Kaiser Hospital where a CAT scan revealed a ruptured aorta. He was then transferred to Doctors Hospital where they preformed surgery to repair the aorta and he is in intensive care and will remain hospitalized for 10 days to 2 weeks and the 4 to 6 weeks recovery at home. Please keep Nikki and Larry in your thoughts and prayers. Join us next month when one of my favorite bands will be entertaining us…CatsnJammer Jazz Band. You will like the new piano man…..Mark Allen Jones. See you on December 19th.
