In March 2009, the HLGCC expanded and opened a new 8,000-square-foot facility. Today, the Center has 85 children, ranging in age from 4 months to 5 years. In addition to Stotts and Assistant Director Tanya Primera, the HLGCC employs 12 teachers, 5 assistant teachers, and 5 part-time college students. It is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Abbygail Narlock will be leaving the HLGCC in August to attend kindergarten. Her mother says, “I’m really sad that this is Abby’s last year. I won’t have an excuse to visit the Center. But perhaps I can go back when the Center celebrates its 50th anniversary, and my grandchild will be there!”

Dr. Paul Mangum, MC Biology Professor, wants to share his intense interest in DNA with those of all ages. His love of genetics and his dedication to teaching and learning are definitely paying off for those who are fortunate enough to

study under his tutelage. Thanks to state-of-the-art genomics equipment in MC’s genetics lab, MC students and others in the community are able to conduct highly sophisticated research projects. The equipment was funded by matching grants from the Midland College Foundation through the Chaparral Circle Endowment Fund and Li-Cor Biosciences.

MC student Ivan Grimmatt was able to use the equipment as part of an international research project. Grimatt - supervised by Mangum - isolated DNA in aquatic hyphomycetes (freshwater fungi) from Portugal and France. He amplified and sequenced this DNA and developed a phylogenetic tree to show the relationship among species of hyphomycetes. Mr. Grimmatt explains, “These fungi are important to the ecosystem because they break down leaves that provide a carbon source for aquatic invertebrates. The invertebrates, in turn, are a food source for fish.” Because of Grimatt’s research work at Midland College, he has been accepted into Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada, where he will major in Biology.

Megan Dutton, an eighth-grade student at Walker Junior High School in Monahans has also benefitted from the genomics equipment. Every Thursday afternoon during the summer of 2010, Dutton worked with Dr. Mangum

to try to amplify, extend and locate a crossover gene in Megan’s family DNA segment. Under the guidance of Dr. Mangum, Dutton researched the TAS2R38 gene and became very proficient with all the tools needed for lab protocols during her work in the facilities provided by Midland College. Her search for the elusive crossover gene was never uncovered, but she gained knowledge and confidence while working with Dr. Mangum and the DNA team. In fact, Dutton recently won first place in The University of Texas of the Permian Basin (UTPB) Science Fair and placed sixth place in the State Science Fair competition in San Antonio on April 2.

When asked about her time spent at Midland College, Megan stated, “I love working with Dr. Mangum. He teaches me so much and makes it fun. Because of him, I’ve found a love for genetics and the possibility of several science fair projects . . . I love working at Midland College and hope I can continue doing that. I’m even thinking about starting my college studies at Midland College when I graduate from high school. Thank you Dr. Mangum, DNA team and Midland College for everything you’ve done for me.”

“It’s not always easy to go to school and take care of responsibilities,” stated MC President Dr. Steve Thomas at the April 13 Science and Math Scholarship Awards

luncheon. However, thanks to the generosity of Midland-area donors, MC is able to award various scholarships to outstanding science students in order to help with some of those “responsibilities.” Five biology students were presented $500 each by Deborah and Cynthia Wolfe. The Wolfe Scholarship was established in memory of their parents, Norma and Joseph Wolfe. MC chemistry students William Kurtz and Rebecca Martin were each awarded $200 through the Richardson Scholarship, and 19 students were awarded with the Barbara Magruder Veterinary Technology Scholarship.

Science students at MC have access to the latest technology in science curriculum. The 45,364 square-foot Leona G. and John E. Fox Science Building contains biology, chemistry and specialty scientific labs, such as microbiology and anatomy and physiology. Midland College offers Associate of Science degrees in math and science with core courses transferable to four-year colleges and universities. In addition to the transferable Associate of Science degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Math and Physics, Midland College

also offers a new Associate of Applied Science degree in Chemical Technology with an emphasis toward chemical purification processes and analyses.

World-renowned Egyptian archaeologist Dr. Zahi

Hawass directs ongoing excavations at Giza, Saqqara and in the Valley of the Kings.

He is responsible for many recent discoveries, including the tombs of the pyramid builders at Giza and the Valley of the Golden Mummies at Bahariya. At Giza, he also uncovered the satellite pyramid of Khufu.

In 2005, Hawass led a team that CT scanned the mummy of King Tutankhamun. His team is continuing to CT scan mummies, both royal and private, and hopes to solve some of the mysteries surrounding the lives and deaths of such important figures as Hatshepsut and Nefertiti.

Hawass has also supervised a major conservation project on the Great Sphinx and developed site management plans for a number of important sites, including the unfinished obelisk quarry in Aswan and the temples of Kom Ombo, Edfu and Dendera. He currently is completing site management plans for the West Bank of Luxor, Giza and Saqqara.

Hawass has brought the world of the pharaohs into the homes and hearts of people around the world through numerous television appearances and books. Among Hawass’ many books on ancient Egypt are Silent Images: Women in Pharaonic Egypt, Hidden Treasures of Ancient Egypt, Secrets From the Sand, and Mountains of Stones: History of the Pyramid Builders. His book about his excavations in Bahariya, The Valley of the Golden Mummies, is a best seller.

MC’s Studio 3600 Art Series has received a donation from long-time MC Art Professor Warren Taylor.

Mr. Taylor retired in May; however, before he retired he sold some of his smaller watercolors and oils that were done in his MC studio and during class demonstrations. A portion of the proceeds from the sale were donated to help with costs associated with MC’s Studio 3600 series.

Twice each year, the Studio 3600 Series features works of MC art faculty, current students and former students. The Series exhibits are displayed in McCormick Gallery located in the Allison Fine Arts Building on the MC campus. Gallery Director J. Don Wallace states, “We are so appreciative of Mr. Taylor’s gift. This will enable us to maintain exhibit facilities and publicize the exhibits in order to showcase our faculty and students.”

The next Studio 3600 Series exhibit will feature the photography of former MC student Andrew (Andy) Hancock. Mr. Hancock is a multifaceted photographer currently based out of Indiana. By locating in the midwest, he is able to frequently travel on assignment from coast to coast both quickly and with ease. His extensive portfolio includes sports, commercial, nature and portraiture photography, some of which were taken on assignment for the New York Times and Sports Illustrated. One of his latest projects is a photo documentary about life in the oilfield.

The Studio 3600 opening reception, “Art and Sandwiches at High Noon,” will be held on Thursday, September 8, at 11:30 a.m.

In late September 2010, Sul Ross State University (SRSU) received notification that the first year of a $3.87 million U.S. Department of

Education grant application for Hispanic Institutions Transfer Access Project (HITAP) - in cooperation with Midland College - had been funded. The cooperative agreement is MC’s fourth cooperative grant partnership with SRSU and will offer degrees in education, kinesiology and criminal justice. Education classes are the first ones available, according to Odell Missildine, SRSU Grant Transfer Specialist, whose office is on the MC campus. Kinesiology and criminal justice will be added later.

As part of HITAP, 63 Sul Ross courses are being converted to distance education delivery. Some courses will be offered via interactive television and others via the Internet. The cooperative project is designed to allow MC students the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree from Sul Ross without leaving Midland.

“All expenses, including maintenance of equipment and travel, are covered by the grant,” explains Jesse Kelsch, HITAP Activity Director. “Offering a four-year degree this way benefits students who cannot uproot their families and move to Alpine.”

Since 2002, more than 40 Midland-based students have graduated from Sul Ross State University under the Midland College-Sul Ross Science Initiative. The Science Initiative, which is still in operation, offers four-year degrees in biology, geology and mathematics. Students take all of their classes on the Midland College campus via distance learning. “We hope that by providing the

opportunity for students to stay at MC and finish a four-year degree they are able to complete more hours with us,” states MC Vice President of Instruction Dr. Rex Peebles. “This makes degree completion a reality for our students who cannot leave Midland due to family and job responsibilities.”

Midland College and Sul Ross, more than 160 miles apart, have a combined adjacent service area of 20 counties and more than 47,000 square miles, larger than the state of New York. Both institutions serve high numbers of Hispanic (47 percent at Sul Ross, 34 percent at Midland College) and low-income (53 percent at Sul Ross, 44 percent at Midland College) students, according to information in The Winkler Post in October, 2010.

Concho Resources wins Bruno HansonEnvironmental Excellence Award

The late Bruno Hanson had a deep respect for God’s natural environment. He was involved in the discovery or extension of more than 20 oil and

gas fields. In 1986, Hanson’s peers elected him President of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), and in 1992, he was instrumen-tal in the formation of the AAPG’s Division of Environmental Geosciences. To commemorate and honor Mr. Hanson’s dedication to the environment, the Bruno Hanson/Midland College Environmental Excellence Award is presented annually to a Permian Basin oil and gas operator that has demonstrated exem-plary environmental stewardship.

On Monday, March 28, during the Midland Reporter-Telegram’s Hearst Energy Awards Reception, the 2011 Bruno Hanson/Midland College Environmental Excellence Award was presented to Concho Resources for their work in reporting spills, cleaning up spills and working with the Bureau of Land Management Carlsbad Field Office (BLM CFO) to develop and test new spill response procedures to be implemented region-wide on BLM lands.

In January 2010, the BLM CFO began what would become a major internal and external overhaul of spill reporting, spill response and spill cleanup program. After the Gulf Oil

Spill in the spring of 2010, such spill program revisions soon became a subject of agency-wide revision emphasis. Since the BLM CFO is one of the busiest BLM offices in the nation, it is extremely difficult to develop a new program and to carry on business as usual at the same time. As the BLM CFO attempt-ed to push out new spill program protocols to industry, there was a great deal of “push-back” from all companies except one - Concho.

It has taken a great deal of time, effort and patience on Concho’s part to engage in this cooperative partnership during the new spill program develop-ment. More importantly, Concho’s cooperative participation in the field testing of the components and processes of the new spill program has led to the devel-opment of a better program for the BLM, for industry and for the environment.

The days got longer, the weather got warmer and spring fever was in the air at Midland College! Spring 2011 at MC featured everything from rock ‘n roll dancing in the joint MC/Midland Community Theatre production of HAIR-

SPRAY to the classical ballet movements of the Russian National Ballet Theatre during the spring’s featured presentation of the Phyllis & Bob Cowan Performing Arts Series. Westminster Abbey may have held the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, but the Al G. Langford Chaparral Center hosted another English celebrity on March 24 as Celia Sandys, granddaughter of Winston Churchill, entertained Midlanders as the guest lecturer for the Davidson Distinguished Lecture Series. Other notable MC spring events included a golf scramble to benefit scholarships for MC technical programs; a musical weekend featuring Dr. Wil-liam Westney, Texas Tech University’s Paul Whitfield Horn Distinguished Professor of Piano; the Hilda Simmons Levitt Poetry contest with special guest Carol Schwartz, Mrs. Levitt’s daughter, in attendance; and the annual Midland Legacy Scholarship essay awards luncheon. Of course, spring wouldn’t be complete without MC having another winning basketball season! The Midland College Chaparral basketball team continued their reign as one of the elite programs in all of junior college basketball and finished the season as national runner-up for the second time in the last three years!

Estate planning makes a great difference in the amount of money you pass on to loved ones and other beneficiaries, such as Midland College. Each year, friends of the college create legacies for themselves and their families through bequests to the Midland College Foundation. With careful planning, charitable deductions can create tax savings for the family estate. Tax-deductible donations can be made in the form of cash, stocks, real estate, excess retirement funds, life insurance, and other assets. As others have done, the Midland College Foundation may be named as a beneficiary in your will. To discuss your preferences, feel free to call Eileen Piwetz, Executive Director of the Midland College Foundation, at (432) 685-4526.

Midland Legacy ScholarshipEssay Contest, April 26

Between 1952 and 1986, Hilda Simmons Levitt lived in Midland and took creative writing courses at Midland College. In 1988, her

husband Stanley Levitt established the poetry contest in Mrs. Levitt’s memory. After Mr. Levitt died in 1994, the Levitts’ children, Carol Levitt Schwartz, of Washington, DC, and John Simmons Levitt, now deceased, pledged to continue to support the contest. Mrs. Schwartz was the honored guest at this year’s event, which featured a poetry reading of original works by contest judge John Poch.

Many Midland College students receive the Midland Legacy Scholarship, sponsored by the Abell-Hanger Foundation,

the Helen Greathouse Charitable Trust and the Chaparral Foundation. In return for the scholarship that pays their tuition and fees, students contribute 40 hours of community service. Each semester, the Abell-Hanger Foundation sponsors an essay contest to honor students’ community service and to let the students tell their stories of how community service has enriched their lives. Five of those students receive additional $500 scholarships for essays written about that community service. The five winning writers are honored at a luncheon.

Dr. David Ugland of Charlotte, North Carolina, recently

established an endowed scholarship in memory of his parents Ann and Lloyd Ugland. The scholarship will award $1,000 annually to an MC associate degree nursing student. Ann and Lloyd Ugland lived in Midland for many years and raised their children - David and his two sisters, Joanne and Susan - in

the community. Lloyd passed away in July 2007, and Ann passed away in April 2009. Dr. David Ugland is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin and Baylor Medical School. He did his residency at Emory University in Atlanta and now has an ophthalmology practice in Charlotte. Ugland states, “My parents were very proud of Midland College. In fact, it was the first college that I attended, and it is remarkable how it has grown. My sisters and I have all moved from Midland, but I wanted to keep our name in the community. This scholarship is a great way for us to show our appreciation to the Midland community. My wife is a nurse, and being a doctor, I have a strong affinity for the nursing profession. When my mother was ill, we were very impressed with the nursing care she received at Midland Memorial Hospital. Several of her nurses were graduates of Midland College.”

Midland College (MC) has received a $2,500 grant from RBC Foundation-USA, to purchase new digital

precision tools for both high school and college technical programs at the MC Advanced Technology Center (ATC). The ATC provides an academic and occupational focus by training students in state-of-the-art industry practices. Further, the ATC responds to community, business, professional and regional needs by providing credit and continuing education courses. “We’re thrilled to receive this funding in order to help accomplish our mission of providing flexible education opportunities that combine traditional methods with effective and innovative hands-on teaching methods,” said Curt Pervier, MC Dean of Technical Studies. “The ATC exists due to partnerships with corporations like RBC Wealth Management that remain committed to our initiatives.”

ConocoPhillips recently awarded $12,000 to be used towards construc-tion of the F. Marie Hall SimLife Center at Midland College. The

planned medical simulation center will be a state-of-the-art educational facility that will provide students and healthcare professionals access to a unique environment capable of enriching the knowledge and skills nec-essary to provide superlative healthcare. It will include six exam rooms adjoining two debriefing conference rooms; two simulation training cen-ters, each equipped with six labs; a simulated birthing room and neonatal unit; two emergency room training labs located near an ambulance bay; and an operating room. Learning will be facilitated through the use of static manikins, virtual reality simulators, and high-fidelity human patient simula-tors that can be programmed to provide realistic physiologic responses to a practitioner’s actions. Lea Keesee, Director of the center states, “ConocoPhillips’ gift is another testimony of the commitment to quality healthcare in West Texas. Students trained in the F. Marie Hall SimLife Center at Midland College will become those professionals who will administer healthcare to Permian Basin citizens.”

Each year, the West Texas Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Soci-ety (ONS) awards a scholarship to a Midland College associate

degree nursing student. Juanita Allcorn received the scholarship in 2010, and the 2011 recipient is Laurie Montanez. ONS, the largest professional oncology association in the world, is composed of over 37,000 registered nurses and other healthcare providers. Midland College’s associate degree nursing program is a two-year program that prepares graduates to take the National Council Licen-sure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). This past year, 90 percent of MC’s associate degree nursing graduates passed the licensure exam during their first attempt.

for MC scholarships Thursday, February 17, marked MC’s annual Homecoming celebration held during half-

time of the men’s basketball game versus New Mexico Military Institute. This year’s festivities included a scholarship presentation in memory of one of MC’s most ardent supporters and dearest fans, Severo Raul Enriquez, more fondly known as “Birdman.” At MC basketball games this “Super Fan” used his trademark “bird call” as the opposing team shot free throws during a basketball game. MC Athletic Director Forrest Allen noted, “He was at his best when his famous bird call disrupted the concentration of any team that dared to compete against his beloved Chaparrals.” Shortly after Severo’s death in September of 2010, a generous anonymous donor designated a scholarship in his memory. Dur-ing the homecoming ceremony, Severo’s parents, Olga and Severo Sr., honored their son’s legacy by presenting the Severo Enriquez Scholarship to three Midland College students: Andre Chance, Joe-Daniel Granado and Jake Wallace.

Giving Hearts - Doctor’s Day 2011

Every February, members of the Midland Medical Alliance stuff over 5,000 envelopes asking Midlanders to give a “Valentine” to their doctors - a contribution in honor of a doctor for scholarships in any of MC’s six health sci-

ences programs. Each envelope is stamped with a heart, and because of the giving hearts of the Midland community, $18,685 was raised in 2011 during the Doctor’s Day campaign. Total funds contributed to Doctor’s Day scholarships since its inception in 2001 is $136,888!

On the road againMidland College admissions and recruitment staff are not going to let the grass

grow under their feet! In 2008, Midland College received a $134,000 grant from the Texas Pioneer Foundation for the purchase of a Mobile Go Center (MGC), a 42-foot gooseneck trailer and Ford F-350 pick-up that allows college representatives to take MC to the people of the Permian Basin. In May of 2011, the Texas Pioneer Foundation awarded MC an additional $17,000 to upgrade MGC technology.

The “Go Center’s” technology includes 17 laptop computers with satellite Inter-net connectivity. Dr. Ryan Gibbs, MC Director of Admissions, says “Even though the MGC is only 3 years old, the technology already was becoming outdated. The additional funds will allow us to improve reliability and Internet connection.”

Gibbs says that over the past three years, the MGC has traveled to schools, churches and community events to assist West Texans with online completion of

college applications and financial aid applications. The MGC also has partnered with the MC Business & Economic De-velopment Center and Liberty Tax Service for credit report and federal income tax assistance. In addition, the MGC is made available to area schools for aptitude and career inventory testing. “It’s a great way to get young people interested in higher education and thinking about career opportunities,” explains Gibbs. “The MGC is used not only as a recruitment tool for Midland College, but also as an advocate for the pursuit of higher education in general.”

IRA Charitable Rollover

The Pension Protection Act of 2006 permits individuals to roll over up to $100,000 from an individual retirement account (IRA) directly to a qualifying charity without recognizing the assets transferred to the qualifying charity as

income. This provision has now been extended until December 31, 2011. The principal rules for direct transfers from an IRA to the Midland College Foundation are that the IRA owner must be 70½ years or older and that the transfer is for no more than $100,000 each year. The transfer must be made directly from an IRA trustee to the Foundation. For more information, call Dr. Eileen Piwetz, Executive Director of the Midland College Foundation, at (432) 685-4526.
