ByAndrewFowler TheU.S.ConferenceofCatholicBishopsvoted June 17 to advance the cause ofcanonization for 1st Lt. Father JosephVerbis Lafleur, a World War II militarychaplain, prisoner of war and a Knight ofColumbus whose courageous witness inthePacifictheaterofthewarbroughtmanysoulstoChrist. Stationed in the Philippines, FatherLafleur was offered a chance to escapewhentheJapaneseinvadedin1941.Whenhefoundouthisunit,the19thBombardmentGroup,wouldnotbeleavingtoo,herepliedfirmly,“ThenIshallstayhere.Myplace iswiththemen.” Father Lafleur would spend more thantwoyearsasaprisonerofwar;hedied in1944 helping his fellow POWs evacuatea torpedoed Japanese prison boat. Forhis service throughout the war, he wasawarded theDistinguishedServiceMedal,aPurpleHeartandBronzeStar.
COURAGEOUS WITNESS Joseph Verbis Lafleur was ordained apriestApril 2, 1938, at 26 years old, andin 1941, he answered the call to join themilitary as a chaplain. While stationedin Albuquerque, N.M., Father Lafleur’scommander noticed his exceptionalperformance. The young chaplain’s nextposting was to Clark Field, a U.S. ArmyairfieldinthePhilippines. Eight hours after the attack on PearlHarbor, Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese planesbombed Clark Field, destroying almostevery American plane parked wingtip-to-wingtiponthestrip.Ninety-threemenwerekilledand143wounded. FatherLafleurministeredtothewoundedanddying, exposinghimself tobulletsandshrapneltogiveabsolutionandhelpdoctorsadministermedicalcare. Col.E.L.Eubankof theArmyAir Forcewitnessed Father LaFleur’s actionsand recommended him to receive theDistinguished Service Cross, the second-highest military honor. The citation reads,“FirstLieutenantLaFleur'sintrepidactions, personal bravery and zealous devotion todutyexemplifythehighesttraditionsofthemilitary forces of the United States andreflect great credit upon himself, the 5thAir Force and theUnited StatesArmyAirForces.” The 19th Bombardment Group waslater attacked by Japanese planes whileevacuatingtoanotherislandbyship.FatherLafleurcrawledthroughahailofbulletstorescueawoundedofficerondeck.Hewasthelastmanontheboatafterassistingwiththeevacuationoftheothersoldiers.
After U.S. and Philippine forcessurrenderedto theJapanesefollowingtheBattle of Bataan, Father Lafleur and therestofthe19thBombardmentGroupwerecaptured. The military chaplain spent therestofhislifeasaPOW.
A SAINT IN PRISON FatherLafleurbouncedfromprisoncamptoprisoncampuntil arrivingat theDavaoPenal Colony in October 1942, where heworkedbesidehisfellowPOWsinthericefieldsandhelpedtheminanywayhecould. Hesneaked into thecompoundhospitalto tend to sick prisoners. He shared hisfoodwiththesickandwounded, andeventraded hiswatch and eyeglasses for foodand medicine. He refused medicine forhimself, even during bouts with malaria, sayingsomeoneelseneededitmore. Even more important, Father Lafleurcontinued to be a spiritual leader. Hepersonally constructed a chapel out ofbamboo andwood namedTheChapel ofSt. Peter in Chains and celebrated Masseachmorningbefore themenheadedoutto work. One soldier recalled that FatherLafleurconservedthewineforconsecrationbyusingamedicinedropper. Father Lafleur’s witness had atremendous impact: Nearly 200AmericanprisonersconvertedtoCatholicismbecauseofhisinfluence. Bill Lowe was one of the men whoconverted.HisinterestinCatholicismbeganafterFatherLafleurhelpedevacuateothersintolifeboatsbeforetheAmerican-Philippinesurrender.He saw in themilitary chaplain
“somethingthatIwishedIhad,”addingthat“hisdemeanorwassoconvincingthatthisledmetopursuetobecomeaCatholic.” “Ifthereeverwasasaint,FatherLafleurwasone,”Lowewouldlaterwrite.
‘I WILL BE WITH YOU’ Father Lafleur’s sense of duty led himto volunteer to take the place of a POWbound for a Japanese airstrip in Lasang,Philippines. He did this despite beingphysicallyweakduetolackoffood. BeforeheleftforLasanginMarch1944,FatherLafleurwroteafinalmessagetohisfamilyonthelabelofacanofmilk.Itreadinpart,“Idonothavetogo,butifIdidn’tandsomethingwouldhappen,IwouldnevergobacktotheStatesasIcouldneverfaceanyofyouagain. Iwould feelasthoughIhadnotdonemyduty.” While at Lasang, Father Lafleurcontinued to inspire theprisonerswithhisactsofcourage.Inoneinstance,Japaneseguards with bayonets surrounded FatherLafleur and other POWs during his dailyrosary service. A guard kept the bayonetat the military chaplain’s stomach. FatherLafleurdidn’tmoveexcepttomakethesignofthecross.Eventually,tensionssubsidedandtheguardsleft. As American forces advanced, theJapanese decided to move the prisonersto mainland Japan. Father Lafleur andhundredsofPOWswereloadedintoaship—theShinyoMaru—whichhadnowhiteflagtodenoteitwascarryingprisoners. Withoutthatsignal,itbecameatargetforAlliedforces.OnSept.7,1944,theShinyoMaruwas torpedoed by theUSSPaddle.During the attack, Father Lafleur led hisfellowprisonersintheship’sholdinprayingtherosary. Though theUnitedStatesmade upthe bulk of the fighting force duringtheKoreanWarwithnearly5.3milliontroopsdeployedworldwideby itsend, more than 55 nations contributed tothe South Korean cause with troops,supplies,orotherformsofaid.Twenty-one countries participated militarily. The South Korean forces, whichformed the Republic of Korea Army,wereestablishedinAugust1948,withSyngman Rhee as president. The border dispute, which eruptedinto a full-on war, though considered“forgotten” set the stage for some ofthemost famous, gruesomebattles inmodernmilitaryhistory. Itwashost totheBattle ofBloodyRidge, theBattleofChosinReservoir, and theBattleofInchon. Thefirst,BloodyRidge, inthemidstof the war’s 1951 stalemate, lasted
