While they’re still a young team, Bain-ville’s boys have improved over the past year, giving them hope they can pull an upset in the postseason.

With just two seniors and one junior on a roster heavy on underclassmen, Bainville has battled inexperience and

wavering confidence throughout the season. “Our confidence level is make or break,” Bainville head coach Luke Romo said. “Once we get down, it seems like we can’t bring it back up.”

The Bulldogs lost their first nine games before earning a non-conference win against Burke County, N.D., Jan. 14. They lost four more times before knocking off Froid/Medicine Lake 48-44 to earn their first conference win on Feb. 3.

Despite its struggles on the court, Romo is pleased with his team’s attitude and work ethic. “The seniors lead the way,” Romo said. “They bring the team together and work hard.”

As the season has gone along, Romo said his team has learned to play as a team, which has made the Bulldogs more competitive.

Bainville is led by 6-3 senior forward Weston Harmon, 5-11 senior shooting guard Luke Panasuk and 5-7 junior point guard Drue Nelson. Harmon is the team’s top scorer, Panasuk is a good all-around athlete, and Nelson serves as the floor general on both ends of the court.

Offensively, the Bulldogs rely on dribble penetration and kick-outs to the open man. Defensively, they prefer to play man-to-man defense, but will switch to a 2-3 or 1-3-1 zone if they get in foul trouble. “We stay man-to-man until we have to switch to zone because of our short bench,” Romo said.

“A lot of people in the area are excited about the tournament,” Romo said. “I know my players are, and I am as well.”

Bainville girls impress with attitude, quicknessBy steve hamelSIDNEY HERALD

Despite uneven results, Bainville’s girls basketball team has continued to compete.

After winning two of their first six games, Bainville’s girls slumped, sliding into an eight-game losing streak that lasted from late December through the entire month of January, but Bainville continued to work hard, stopping the streak on Feb. 3 with a 62-61 win over Froid/Medicine Lake.

The Bulldogs lost 66-40 against Fairview the following night, but they managed to outscore the Warriors 21-13 in the fourth quarter. “The thing I like about them is they kept playing hard,” Fairview head coach Mark Thompson said of Bainville. “I’ve got to give them credit for that.”

R&L head coach Kara Triplett said Bainville plays aggressive defense with an uptempo fast-break offense.

Senior guard Liza Harmon leads the offense as both a distributor and a scorer. “She likes to penetrate, and she likes to fast break,” Triplett said. “She’s really quick.”

It’s been an up and down season for the Brockton boys basketball team, but if the Warriors get hot at the right time, they have the talent to make some noise in the District 2-C tournament.

Brockton has impressive wins over Fairview and Lustre Christian on its resume, but it has also lost its fair share of conference games. “We’ve kind of been on a rollercoaster,” Brockton head coach Rusty Boxer said.

Despite its inconsistency, Boxer is confident the pieces will fall in place for his team at the District 2-C tournament. “We’re going to make a big showing come tournament time,” he said. “I want to get to divisionals.”

Brockton just missed out on qualify-ing for divisionals a year ago, losing 71-58 to Culbertson in a divisional qualifi-er game at the District 2-C tournament, but Boxer thinks his team has matured since last season. “These guys are more disciplined,” he said.

Six-foot-3 forward Chance Roberts leads the Brockton attack and is a threat to score from anywhere on the court. Five-foot-6 senior point guard Keith Belgarde is an experienced

floor general, while 6-0 forward Brady Johnson and 5-6 guard Brooks Rattling Thunder give Brockton other options on offense.

While Brockton lists nine players on its roster, it has often dressed seven or fewer players. Despite its lack of depth, the transition game has been Brock-ton’s greatest strength, Boxer said, because the players have bought into a rigorous conditioning program. “We can get up and down the floor,” he said. “We want to keep moving as fast as we can.”

Boxer said defense has been a strug-gle this season. Out of necessity, Brock-ton typically utilizes a zone to prevent its players from getting in foul trouble.

This season has been a challenge for the young Brockton Lady Warriors, who have found wins hard to come by.

Despite struggles on the court, head coach Terrence Johnson said his team has grown as the season has gone on, and he is pleased with their competi-tiveness heading into the District 2-C

tournament. “We’ve never given up in a game,” Johnson said. “We’ve been down by 30 and played like we were down by two.”

Brockton has had trouble competing with its conference opponents this sea-son, but it nearly pulled out a win Dec. 17 against Froid/Medicine Lake, a game Brockton lost 55-52.

Inexperience defines this year’s team, which does not have any seniors, but it

has flashed potential at times. “There’s been times where we’ve seen them play as good as they can be,” Johnson said.

Five-foot-9 sophomore post player Alex Firemoon leads the offense. Other key players include 5-6 freshman point guard April Brown and 5-4 junior guard Waverly Bear. “We try to go inside be-cause teams have a hard time stopping Alex,” Johnson said.

Johnson said their opponents tend to focus their defensive effort on denying Firemoon the ball, forcing Brockton to

rely on perimeter shooting, something it has not had much success with this season.

Defensively, the Lady Warriors throw a variety of looks at their opponents, utilizing zones, man-to-man and the oc-casional full-court press.

Brockton will likely not advance far in the District 2-C tournament, but Johnson hopes his team will work hard. “I hope we play hard and give our best effort,” he said.

The Circle boys basketball team is hoping for a top four finish in the District 2-C tournament, but head coach Colby Loudon knows that will not be an easy task.

“The league is pretty balanced right now,” Loudon said. “You’re going to have to put together some pretty solid games to get there.”

To accomplish its goal, Loudon said his team will have to execute its offense, limit its mistakes and rebound well. The latter shouldn’t be too difficult consider-ing Circle has the tallest roster in the district.

Junior 6-7 forward James Ford and senior 6-4 forward Carson Schriver lead the Circle offense with their post play, while freshman point guard Bryce Loudon does most of the ball-handling. Junior 6-0 guard Reece Idland, sopho-more 6-2 forward Ryan Kasten and freshman 5-9 guard Lee Delp are also relied on to contribute on offense.

“We’re pretty balanced in our scor-ing,” Loudon said. “Each night some-body else might have to step up and do more. We’ll try to get easy shots run-ning it through our post players.”

Defensively, Circle mixes zone and man-to-man depending on matchups.

While Circle has a bigger team than a year ago, it lost four seniors from last year’s team and has just two players who saw much varsity playing time last year.

“These guys have a lot of potential, and they can do some good things,” Loudon said. “I think it will be a real exciting tournament. Fairview and Culbertson are going to be the favorites.

After that it’s going to be whoever puts together some solid games.”

With the luxury of a veteran roster including five seniors and two juniors, the Circle girls basketball team has the depth and experience to make a run in the District 2-C tournament.

“We want to at least be in the top four for sure,” Circle head coach Jason Jes-sen said.

That depth, along with a tremendous sense of team solidarity, have helped the Lady Wildcats stay in the upper half of the District 2-C standings all season. “I’m not scared to put any combina-tion of players out there,” Jessen said. “We’re really team-oriented. Team unity is our biggest strength.”

Five-foot-7 senior Tina VanHorn and 5-6 senior Ali Fritz lead the Circle of-fense. VanHorn is a quick athlete with good basketball sense and ball-handling

skills, while Fritz has “really come on as an outside shooter,” Jessen said.

Five-foot-8 senior Ashley Gardner is also an important offensive contribu-tor, who is capable of mixing it up in the post with taller players. “She’s not scared to rub elbows with post players, but she can also shoot outside,” Jessen said.

Jessen lists ball-handling, seeing the floor and running in transition as some of his team’s strengths. “We utilize our speed whenever we can,” he said.

Defensively, Circle prefers to play man-to-man, but it will utilize a 1-2-2 zone against taller teams to isolate taller post players.

“I’m really looking forward to a great tournament,” Jessen said. “I think we’re going to see some really good bas-ketball coming out of this tournament.”

After a strong regular season, the Cul-bertson boys have their sights set on an appearance in the District 2-C champi-onship game.

The Cowboys swept most of their con-ference opponents, while splitting a pair of games with 2011 district tournament champion Fairview, making Culbertson head coach Cody Steppler optimistic his team can compete for the league title.

“We’re going to have to play our game,” Steppler said. “Play to our

strengths and capitalize on other teams’ weaknesses.”

Culbertson’s strengths are its depth, aggressiveness and running game. A deep bench allows the Cowboys to ag-gressively pressure the perimeter in its man-to-man defensive scheme, while frequently utilizing a full-court press.

Offensively, Culbertson prefers to play an uptempo style, getting easy lay-ups in transition and popping the quick three-pointer if it is available.

Defensively, Cul-bertson typically utilzes a full-court press while applying constant pressure to its opponent’s ball-handler.

Steppler said box-ing out and limiting turnovers are two keys he stresses most to his team, and

he believes if they do those two things, they will have success.

The Cowboys strug-gled with turnovers early in the season, but Steppler said they have improved as the year has gone along, helping them transform from a half-court offense to a run-and-gun transi-tion team.

“Everybody has a legitimate shot,” Steppler said of the tournament field.

“It’s a pretty deep conference. It’ll be a great tournament.”

With a roster full of experienced play-ers who steamrolled most conference opponents by 20 points or more during the regular season, the Culbertson Cow-girls are among the favorites to win the District 2-C tournament.

“We’ve got a lot of talent,” Culbertson first-year head coach Ashley Sullivan said. “We’ve got a good shot to get out of the tournament.”

Speedy senior point guard Chelbi Brugh is the catalyst for an offense that is adept in transition and from a half-court set. Five-foot-8 senior forward Bailey Nickoloff and 5-7 senior for-ward Caitlin Hofman give the Cowgirls interior scoring options, while Brugh and junior guard Shelby Weeks are long-range threats. Five-foot-5 senior Allie Crowder and 5-9 junior Tori Kirkaldie provide depth and occasional scoring.

Sullivan said her team’s chemistry and ball movement have improved as

the season has gone on. “Unselfish play as made us really come together as a team,” she said.

Despite its depth and experience, Cul-bertson has its kryptonite. The defend-ing conference champion Fairview War-riors have defeated the Cowgirls both times the teams matched up this season, beating Culbertson 52-44 in Culbertson and 53-41 in Fairview.

Should the two teams meet again in

the district tournament, Sullivan said her team will have to do a better job containing Fairview guard Tiffany Kittleson, who scored 16 and 19 points in their two regular season encounters. “The biggest thing right now is to get a lid on Kittleson,” Sullivan said.

Regardless of what happens in the postseason, Sullivan feels fortunate to have coached the Cowgirls this season. “As a first-year head coach, I couldn’t have gotten more lucky with such a great group of girls.”

The Fairview girls basketball team enters the District 2-C tournament as favorites once again after a dominant regular season.

Fairview returns three starters from last year’s team, which ran the table at the district and divisional tournaments before losing at state, and head coach Mark Thompson said he hopes to make another appearance at the state tourna-ment.

“Divisional is in our sights and hope-fully a trip back to the state tourna-ment,” Thompson said.

Thompson said this year’s team doesn’t have as much offensive firepow-er as last year’s squad, but he thinks they are on a similar level defensively.

Fairview’s offense is led by seniors Tiffany Kittleson and Jordan Gifford, who both run the floor well in transi-tion and are good long-range shooters. Junior forward Masyn Klose gives the Warriors a third reliable scoring option, while sophomore Trisha Hurley and junior Brittany Schneider are also ca-pable of providing offense when needed.

Fairview has quickness and athleti-cism in spades, allowing it to run an ag-gressive pressing and trapping man-to-man defense. The Warriors run the floor well in transition, taking advantage of turnovers to spark their uptempo offense.

While the Warriors have plenty of athleticism, they lack height, making

the 5-8 Klose a critical player on a team that occasionally struggles rebound-ing the ball. “I think Masyn is the key,” Thompson said. “When Masyn gets in foul trouble it changes things. With all the size we play against, we definitely need to keep her on the floor. She needs to play smart basketball, be aggressive and stay out of foul trouble.”

Thompson believes the district tournament will be competitive as he expects five or six teams to push for a divisional spot.

The Fairview boys return most of the team that won the District 2-C tourna-ment a year ago, making them a deep, experienced group that will be favored to repeat as conference champions.

“Our goal is to play Saturday night with a chance to go on to divisionals,” Fairview head coach Luke Kloker said. “We want to play our best basketball at that time.”

Junior Brock Schriver and senior Tim Hurley each earned all-state selections a year ago, giving Fairview a pair of veteran playmakers who can score off the dribble and spot-up from three-point range.

Senior forward Duncan Sloan, junior guard Cody Vitt and sophomore guard Justin Bieber give Fairview three more dangerous scoring options. Sloan is a threat using his 6-4 size in the post and as a mid-range jump-shooter. Vitt can score in a variety of ways, while Bieber is a lethal three-point shooter when his shot is on.

“Our biggest strengths are our ex-perience and our depth,” Kloker said. “Many different kids have stepped in and played big roles. Any given person could step up and have a big game.”

Despite its many strengths, Fairview has not been invincible. Brockton and Culbertson both defeated the Warriors

on their home court this season, and Kloker said there are several things his team is working to improve .

“Offensively we’re working on creat-ing more movement and space and focusing on getting teammates open,” Kloker said. “Defensively we’re trying to do a better job rebounding and limit-ing easy baskets.

“I think the key for us is if we play well, we’ll be just fine.”

The Froid/Medicine Lake boys basketball team has had a tough time replacing three seniors who led the Red Hawks to the semi-finals of last year’s state tournament.

After opening the season with back-to-back losses, Froid/Lake picked up a win against Bainville before losing three more. A win over Westby/Greno-ra broke the losing streak, the win only provided temporary relief as Froid/Lake lost its next six games before pick-ing up its third win, a 45-39 victory over Brockton.

When the District 2-C tournament rolls around, Froid/Lake head coach Josh Stentoft knows his team could be facing a play-in game to get into the postseason.

“I hope we come away with a win right off the bat,” Stentoft said. “Get-ting into the tournament is the main goal.”

Holdovers from last year’s successful team include 5-5 senior guard Jacob Re-uter, who does well as a spot-up shooter from the perimeter, and 6-1 senior Charles Four Bear.

Five-foot-9 sophomore Jalen Hen-drickson is one of the team’s best ath-letes, and an aggressive post presence, despite his small stature. “He’s not real big, but he plays big in the post,” Sten-toft said of Hendrickson.

Offensively, Stentoft would like to see his team work the ball into the post more often, rather than spend so much time shooting from the perimeter. On defense, Froid/Lake utilizes man-to-man and zone schemes depending on matchups.

Stentoft said hustle is his team’s best attribute, but a lack of experience and leadership have kept it from experienc-ing the success it had a year ago.

“Last year a lot of these kids weren’t asked to do a lot,” Stentoft said. “This year they’re asked to do a little more. I’m proud of our kids, and I hope they can bring their ‘A’ game for the tourna-ment.”

Turnovers have plagued the Froid/Medicine Lake girls basketball team this season, but head coach Sarah Nel-son is encouraged by the progress her team has made as the year has gone on.

Nelson said her team was turning the ball over 60 times per game early on this season, but they’ve cut that number down to about 30 per game. “I think they like to run-and-gun, but that leads to a lot of turnovers,” Nelson said. “I’m trying to slow it down to get control of the game.”

Despite struggling against District 2-C

opponents in the regular season, Nel-son’s expectations remain high for the district tournament, where she hopes Froid/Medicine Lake can place in the top four and advance to the divisional round. “I believe that we could, but everything has got to come together,” she said.

Five-foot-8 senior Kacie Hove leads the Red Hawks’ offense from the post. “She has a good inside game as a rebounder and a scorer,” Nelson said.

Five-foot-6 junior Callie Hendrickson is the team’s top three-point threat, while 5-4 senior Whitney Anderson is also an important offensive contribu-

tor. “She has great basketball sense,” Nelson said of Anderson. “She’s a good offensive player, and she’s a great defen-sive player.

“If I have those three cooperating and working together, we usually do pretty good.”

Froid/Medicine Lake’s offense lags behind its defense, which Nelson char-acterized as the team’s strength. “They

hustle, they play good defense, we’re still working on our offense,” she said.

While the Red Hawks have players ca-pable of knocking down three-pointers, Nelson prefers when her players look inside first.

Defensively, Froid/Medicine Lake runs a lot of man-to-man and mixes in a 1-3-1 zone.

The R&L Fusion boys had an up-and-down regular season as the young squad struggled to produce consistent offense, but head coach Harlyn Olson believes his team has the talent make a run at the District 2-C tournament.

“I think the sky is the limit for the R&L Fusion,” Olson said. “We’ll go out and play great defense, but we’ve got to put the ball in the hole.”

In addition to playing good defense, the Fusion have also done a good job limiting their turnovers. “We don’t make a lot of mistakes on offense,” Ol-son said. “We’ve just got to do more with our possessions.”

Inconsistent shooting from the floor and struggles at the free-throw line have left the Fusion in the middle of the pack at the end of the regular season, but Olson said the team has improved as the season has gone on.

“The first three or four games, it was kind of a struggle with a new coach and a new system,” he said. “Recently we

put in different offenses, and they seem to be responding well.”

The Fusion began the season 0-3 before rattling off four straight wins to pull themselves out of the cellar.

Six-foot-1 senior Charlie Switzer and 5-10 junior Cameron Johnson carry most of the scoring load for R&L. Swit-zer is a good outside shooter who has improved in the post, while Johnson is a quick slasher who can get to the rim on dribble penetration. Six-foot-three junior Jared Rosaaen is R&L’s biggest offensive threat in the post.

Sophomores Christian Prevost and Lars Kvaalen round out the starting lineup. Olson said both players have made tremendous strides since the be-ginning of the season and are starting to show what they are capable of.

Injuries have kept the R&L Fusion lineup in flux throughout the regular season, but the Fusion girls have man-aged to keep themselves in the middle of the conference standings.

The Fusion lost four seniors from last year’s team, which just missed qualify-ing for the divisional tournament, but despite their inexperience, this year’s squad hopes to take the next step and reach the divisional round.

“We’ve had to rely on players who are fairly young,” R&L head coach Kara Triplett said. “The learning curve has been very large. It’s been tough, but it’s valuable as it gives them experience. It will make them better players, but it’s a lot to ask.”

Steady defense has characterized the Fusion’s effort in their wins, but inconsistency, especially on offense, has prevented them from stringing together sustained success. “I think our defense is fairly solid,” Triplett said. “We need to put some points on the board to be a little more complete.

The Savage boys basketball team hopes its defense and experience will

propel it to success in the District 2-C tournament.

“We’re going into the tournament with the mindset that we’re going to

get out of it,” Savage head coach Bart Haflich said. “We want to make a run. We want to play in several tournaments, not just one.”

To accomplish that goal, Savage will lean heavily on its three seniors, 6-4 center Braden Ler, 5-11 guard Chris Reynolds and 6-2 forward Shad Stan-ford, but the entire team will need to come to play.

“Everybody needs to step up,” Haflich said. “We’re looking for those seniors to lead the way.”

While Savage has had difficulty scor-ing at times this season, the Warriors have been able to grind out wins on the defensive end of the floor. Ler gives Savage a shot-blocker to protect the rim alongside 6-2 junior Wyatt Hagler. Reynolds, Stanford and 6-2 junior Zach Tunnell-Wilson give Savage experienced man-to-man defenders on the perimeter.

“As long as we can play defense, we can play with anybody,” Haflich said.

Offensively, Ler is Savage’s top inte-rior threat, Reynolds and Stanford can

create opportunities off the dribble and Tunnell-Wilson and freshman Tanner Hagler can be dangerous spot-up shoot-ers when their shots are on.

An injury to Stanford’s right wrist forced Savage to develop depth, which should serve the Warriors well in the postseason. Savage went 3-4 in seven games without its all-state forward, but his absence gave freshmen Tanner and Chase Hagler the opportunity to carve out spots in the rotation.

Stanford returned to the lineup in late January, and while he still can’t shoot with his preferred right hand, he still has the ability to be a difference-maker.

Savage is missing two starters from last year’s team, which qualified for the divisional tournament, but Haflich be-lieves this year’s squad has more expe-rience and depth. “The three seniors we have have a lot of tournament and big-game experience,” he said. “And we’ve a bench. We didn’t have that before.”

The Savage girls team fell just short of qualifying for the divisional tour-nament a year ago, losing to Circle by three points in a divisional qualifying game at the District 2-C tournament.

As this year’s district tournament approaches, Savage head coach Staci Lange-Rice believes her team is more determined this time around. “This team has more determination,” she said. “They’re more ma-ture, and they encourage each other a whole lot.”

Savage’s greatest strength is its height. Six-foot senior Bridger Rice, 5-10 senior Brittany Smith, 5-9 senior Hanna Jepsen and 5-8 junior Shanae Prevost give Savage the tallest roster in District 2-C. “Height-wise we don’t have a match,” Lange-Rice said.

Rice is a multi-dimensional threat, who can score in the post and from three-point range. Smith shares the scoring load, doing most of her damage in the post, while Jepsen is capable of locking down the best post players in

the conference on the defensive end.“Our defense has been really tough,”

Lange-Rice said, noting her team held R&L’s standout Alexis Johnson to three points earlier this season. “If we keep those big scorers down, it will help us a lot.”

Savage appears to be a strong contend-er for a divisional spot, if it can stay out of foul trouble. Lack of depth is a major concern, since Savage has just seven

players on its entire ros-ter, but Lange-Rice said her players are in good enough shape to play at a high level despite logging heavy minutes. “Condi-tioning-wise they’ve done well,” she said. “We’re in exceptionally great shape.”

Lange-Rice said contri-butions from freshmen Desiree Martell and Brittany Condradsen and eighth-grader Shelby Stanford have helped make up for the team’s lack of bodies. “My younger girls have stepped up and bailed us out a few times,” she said.

Lange-Rice is looking forward to an exciting tournament. “District 2-C is always full of tough competition,” she said. “People will be entertained.”

The Westby/Grenora boys basketball team will have to play tough defense to have a chance to advance to the divi-sional round.

The Rangers have done well offen-sively with their dribble-drive motion scheme, but head coach Chad Solberg said his team will have to play better de-fense to accomplish its goal. “We gotta defend,” Solberg said. “That’s kind of been our trouble this year.”

After winning their season-opener against Bainville, Westby/Grenora lost six straight games before emphatically ending the streak with six straight wins. Westby/Grenora then lost a con-ference matchup with Fairview and a non-conference game to Scobey before avenging an early-season loss to Savage with a 72-66 win on Savage’s home floor.

Offensively, junior guard Brady Olson and freshman guard Cooper Olson have had success penetrating off the dribble and scoring or passing the ball off to an open teammate. “In this conference you see in your face ball pressure all the time, but we’ve been able to get to the basket,” Solberg said. “We try to make two people guard us and dish to the

ing inside, Solberg said.Defensively, the Rangers primarily

rely on a man-to-man system, but they also mix in a 2-3 zone.

While Westby/Grenora is more inexperienced than it was a year ago, Solberg said his team is a little quicker this time around.

Solberg believes the District 2-C tournament is a wide-open competition. “Every game is going to be tight,” he said. “There’s about three or four teams that could win the thing.”

After a solid regular season, Grenora/Westby Lady Gophers hope to use the District 2-C tournament as a spring-board to divisionals.

“We’ve played well defensively all year,” head coach Tony Holecek said. “We just need to continue to get bet-ter offensively and put the ball in the basket.”

Westby/Grenora’s man-to-man defense has been very successful this season as only Culbertson has managed to score 60 points against the scheme.

Offensive consistency has eluded the Gophers, but they have a veteran group of players who have progressed as the season has gone on. “We’ve had some games where we’ve played super well,” Holecek said. “Our big thing now is finishing some of the close ball games we’ve been in.”

After failing to string together more than one win in a row the first month of the season, Grenora/Westby got hot in January, winning five out of six games before finishing the month with back-to-back losses to District 3-C heavyweight Scobey and defending District 2-C cham-pion Fairview.

Five-foot-10 junior post player Maken-zie Westgard leads a balanced offensive attack, which routinely has six or seven players score on any given night. “A lot

of things got through her,” Holecek said. “She’s a good rebounder for us as well.”

Teaming with Westgard in the post is 5-9 junior Kayla Rust. Five-foot-7 senior guard Jonni Muller and 5-8 junior guard Kori Gunlikson are Grenora/Westby’s top perimeter threats.

The Gophers failed to qualify for divisionals at last year’s district tourna-ment, but they are more experienced this time around and Holecek believes that experience will serve them well. “I think we’re more aggressive,” Holecek said. “I’d like to think we’re playing together pretty well too.”
