Corruption is rampant in our social and political life. Like cancer, it is eating into the vitals of

the society. Self-serving politicians and their agents and power brokers can stoop to any

extent to feather their own nest. Nobody is free from the needle of suspicion. Corruption

seems to rule that roost everywhere. In government offices it percolates from the top to the

bottom. “You pay the piper and call the time” or “Money makes the mare go” are the

unwritten tenets of our administrative-cum-political-set up. Corruption in India has wings,

not wheels. As the nation grows, the corrupt also grows to invent new methods of cheating

the government and public. The causes of corruption are many and complex. Corruption is as

much a moral as a development issue. It can distort entire decision-making processes on

investment projects and other commercial transactions, and the very social and political

fabric of societies.

It seems that the older generation has given the go by to all that was good in India. It is the

youth and specially students who have to take cudgels against the demo of corruption and

crush it altogether. A beginning can be made in the direction by holding anti-corruption

drives. The ill-effects of corruption in public life should be publicized through inter-school

declamation and essay-writing contests. Students should take a pledge to resist the

temptation of using unfair means in the examination. They can also go a step further and

persuade their friends, relatives and parents to curb this evil at all costs. The dedicated

Want to feel better, have more energy and perhaps even live longer? Look on further than

exercise. The health benefits of regular exercise and physical activity are hard to ignore. And

the benefits of exercise are yours for the taking, regardless of your age, sex or physical

ability. Regular physical activity can improve your muscle strength and boost your

endurance. Exercise and physical activity deliver oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and

help your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. And when your heart and lungs work

more efficiently, you have more energy to go about your daily chores.

Physical health affects the mind and vice-versa. Let us be clear that a sound mind in a sound

body are prerequisites for high efficiency and good quality work in the office, factory or field,

which lead to a sense of achievement and fulfillment.

Our health is, of course, important not only to us, but also to our families and even to our

employers. No wonder then those companies everywhere have a stake in the health and

fitness of their employees and are willing to spend considerable money towards this

purpose. Japanese companies particularly excel in this and the more successful among them

start off the day with a body bending and stretching session and even singing the company

song designed to promote loyalty and motivation among the workforce!

It is estimated that some 20,000 American films have established in-house clubs. Typical of

there is the soft drink manufacturer, Pepsi Cola which has spent about 2 million in setting up

a health club at its head office in New York State. Such expenditure has proved to be a wise

investment in achieving better efficiency and high productivity. It has indirectly also helped

reduce the premium on the health insurance of staff. Hundreds of consultancies have sprung

up for the management of health clubs and fitness centres.

a lifetime of fame and public attention.

Charles Augustus Lindbergh was more interested in flying airplanes than he was in studying.

He dropped out of the University of Wisconsin after two years to earn a living performing

daredevil airplane stunts at county fairs. Two years later, he joined the United States Army so

that he was could go the Army Air Service flight – Training School. After completing his

training, he was hired to fly mail between St. Louis and Chicago. Then, came the historic flight

across the Atlantic. In 1919, a New York city hotel owner had offered a prize of $25,000 to

the first pilot to fly nonstop from New York city to Paris. Nine St. Louis business leaders

helped pay for the plane by flying it from San Diego to New York, with an overnight stop in St.

Louis. The flight took only 20 hours and 21 minutes, a transcontinental record.

Nine days later, on May 20, 1927, Lindbergh took off from long Island, New York, at 7:52 am.

He landed at Paris on May 21 at 10:21 pm. He had flown more than 3600 miles in less than

thirty four hours. His flight made news around the world. He was given awards everywhere

he went. He was presented with the U.S Congressional Medal of Honour and the first

Distinguished Flying Cross. For a long time, Lindbergh toured the world as a U.S goodwill

ambassador. He met his future wife Anne Morrow, in Mexico, where her father was the

United States ambassador.

During the 1930s, Charles and Anne Lindbergh worked for various airline companies,

charting new commercial air routes. In 1931, for a major airline, they charted a new route

knees and gently used her tusks and trunk to support the calf.

Suddenly, a group of impalas shout out of the thick grass. One female was bleeding heavily.

Our forest guard looked through his binoculars.

The Olive Ridley turtle has a circumtropical distribution, living in tropical and warm waters

western coast of Africa and the coasts of northern Brazil, Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana

and Venezuela. Historically, this species has been widely regarded as the most abundant sea

turtle in the world. More than one million Olive Ridleys were commercially harvested off the

The Chennai Seacoast is a breeding ground for the endangered Olive Ridley turtles. The

‘Turtle walk is an initiative aimed at educating the educating the fishing community and the

During the night, under normal conditions, the sea is a brighter source of light than the land.

But now with urbanization and night time lighting, the shore is brighter than the sea at night.

This distracts the Olive Ridley turtles that come ashore to lay eggs. Even the hatchings get

distracted. Instead of going in the direction of the sea, the hatchings and adults stray towards

human habitations.

It happens to us all, however hard we may try to delay the process. We grow old. Cosmetic

surgery may remove the wrinkles, skin which has sagged may be tightened by means of a

facelift and a hair dresser may dye grey hair a more youthful colour, but we cannot remain

young forever.

Age brings intelligence, experience, wisdom and beauty. So why are we so scared of it? The

trouble is that many of us find it impossible to relate to these worrying, facts, unable to face

the reality that every day we inch ever closer to our own dotage. Our older generations

experienced the majority of the most tumultuous century in human history and yet at best

we infantilise, at worst outright ignore them.

However, what is important is the quality of life. Some people are lucky to be taken care of at

home whereas others may have to move to residential homes. The worst part of ageing is

that often the mind becomes less alert. As people grow older they experience short-term

memory. Later, some may suffer from dementia, often in the form of Alzheimer’s disease.

By no means are all people in this category. Many senior citizens are in the possession of all

their faculties and see retirement as a time of freedom. Not only that if they have a generous

retirement pension they are likely to be quite well-off with money to be spent on a holiday

and other luxuries. Because of this, both business and government have a new respect for

what is known as grey power.

It is unfortunate that many people regard old people as geriatrics who have one foot in the

grave. Someone should remind them that they too would be old one day!

b) Why do we have such an aversion to ageing?

1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:

The Amazon is the world’s largest tropical rainforest. It covers an area of nearly 208 million

square miles, which is nearly the size of the continent of Australia. The Amazon rainforest

gets its life from the majestic Amazon river, the world’s second largest river, which runs

directly through the heart of the region. The rainforest itself is simply the drainage basin for

the river and its many tributaries. The vast forest itself consists of four layers, each featuring

its own ecosystems and specially adapted plants and animals.

The forest floor is the lowest region. Since only two percent of the sunlight filters through the

top layers of the understory, very few plants grow here. The forest floor, however, is rich

with rotting vegetation and the bodies of dead organisms, which are quickly broken down

into nutrients and integrated into the soil. Tree roots stay close to these available nutrients

and decomposers such as millipedes and earth worms use nutrients for food.

The understory is the layer above the forest floor. Much like the forest floor, only about 2 -5

percent of the sunlight reaches this shadowy realm. Many of the plants in the understory

have large, broad leaves to collect as much sunlight as possible. The understory is so thick

that there is very little air movement. As a result, plants rely on insects and animals to

pollinate their flowers.

The layer above the understory is the canopy. This is where much of the action in the

rainforest occurs. Many canopy leaves have specially adapted leaves which form “drip tips”.

Drip tips allow water to flow off the leaves which prevents mosses, fungi, and lichens from

occupying the leaves. Leaves in the canopy are very dense and filter about 80 percent of the

sunlight. The canopy is where the wealth of the rainforest’s fruits and flowers grow.

Bromeliads, cup-like plants, provide drinking pools for animals and breeding locations for

tree frogs.

a) Why is the Amazon rainforest called the world’s largest rainforest?

b) Amazon river is the world’s .

2. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:

Want to feel better, have more energy and perhaps even live longer? Look no further than

exercise. The health benefits of regular exercise and physical activity are hard to ignore. And

the benefits of exercise are yours for the taking, regardless of your age, sex or physical

ability. Regular physical activity can improve your muscle strength and boost your

endurance. Exercise and physical activity deliver oxygen, and nutrients to your tissues and

help your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. And when your heart and lungs work

more efficiently, you have more energy to go about your daily chores.

Physical health affects the mind and vice-versa. Let us be clear that a sound mind in a sound

body are prerequisites for high efficiency and good quality work in the office, factory or field,

which lead to a sense of achievement and fulfilment.

Our health is of course, important not only to us, but also to our families and even to our

It is estimated that some 20,000 American firms have established in-house health clubs.

Typical of there is the soft drink manufacturer, Pepsi Cola which has spent about 2 million in

setting up a health club at its head office in New York State. Such expenditure has proved to

be a wise investment in achieving better efficiency and high productivity. It has indirectly

also helped reduce the premium on the health insurance of staff. Hundreds of consultancies

have sprung up for the management of health clubs and fitness centres

a) How is exercising the most inexpensive way to keep healthy?

b) How does regular physical activity help us?

c) What shows that the health of the employees is important in a company?

d) Why expenditure on health is considered a wise investment?

e) What is meant by ‘ignore’? (Para 1)

1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: 8

Baisakhi, which occurs on April 13 (and rarely on April 14), is the beginning of the year. It is

also a harvest festival. The rabi crop is ready for harvest; the fields are lush green and heavy

with the grains; it is a season of plenty. Naturally the mood of the people in the villages is one

of joy. What better things to do than to celebrate, to sing and dance?

That’s what Baisakhi is all about; it is a community festival. The man and women dance the

robust and energetic bhangra and griddha.

People wear bright coloured traditional dresses for the festival. Traditionally the festivities

take place on the banks of rivers. People eat ‘rotis’ made out of freshly ground atta (wheat

flour) along with desi ghee and gud (jaggery). On the whole, it is a day of merry-making and

feasting. A bonfire is lit, and the dances are performed around it.

For the Sikhs, Baisakhi also marks the beginning of the Khalsa Movement. It was on this day,

that the tenth Guru, Gobind Singh, initiated the Khalsa Movement of the Sikh Brotherhood in

1699.

For Hindus, it is the start of the second month of New Year after Chaitr, and is celebrated

with requisite bathing, partying and worshipping. It’s believed that thousands of years ago,

Goddess Ganga descended to earth and in her honour, many Hindus gather along the sacred

Ganges River for ritual baths. The action is centered in the holy cities along the Ganges in

north India, or in Srinagar’s Mughal Gardens, Jammu’s Nagbani Temples-, or anywhere in

Tamil Nadu. Hindus plant poles (wrapped in flags or gold-embroidered silk) in front of their

homes, and hang pots of brass, copper or silver on top. Swami Dayanand Saraswati founded

theAryaSamajonVaisakhiin1875.

Apart from the Sikhs and Hidus, Vaisakhi is an important day for the Buddhists as well. The

name is Vesakha, Vaisakha, Vesak or Wesak. It commemorates the Birth, the Awakening and

the Enlightened Passing Away of Gautama Buddha who was born as prince Siddharta.

2. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: 12

I have found that walking stimulates observation and opens one’s eyes to movements and

appearances in earth and sky, which ordinarily escape attention. When I reached the end of

my walk, and paused for a moment before retracing my steps, I was conscious of the

inexhaustible richness of the world through which I had come, of a thousand voices that had

spoken to me, and a thousand sights of wonder that had moved before me; I was awake to

the universe which most of us see only in broken and unintelligible dreams… through all this

realm of truth and poetry men have passed and re-passed these many years, I said to myself;

and I began to wonder how many of those now long asleep really saw or heard this great glad

world of sun and summer! I began to retrace my steps, and as I reached the summit of the hill

and looked beyond, I saw the cattle standing knee.

to be far enough away from Nature to observe her; one becomes part of th-deep in the

brook… and heard the faint bleating of sheep borne from a distant pasturage.

One may connect with the surroundings, when one lounges by the hour in the depths of the

forest, or sits, book in hand, under the knotted and familiar apple tree, on a summer

afternoon, the faculty of observation is lulled into a dreamless sleep; one ceases a great,

silent movements in the midst of which he sits, mute and motionless, while the hours slip by

with the peace of eternity.

I have sometimes tried to recall in imagination the world of Nature before a human voice had

broken the silence or a human foot left its impress on the soil; but when I remember that

what I see in this sweep of force and beauty is largely what I myself put into the vision, that

Nature without the human ear is soundless, and without the human eye colourless.

a) What does walking simulate?

b) What did the writer realize when he reached the end of the road?

1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: 8

In the 16th century, an age of great marine and terrestrial exploration, Ferdinand Magellan

led the first expedition to sail around the world. As a young Portuguese noble, he served the

king of Portugal, but he became involved in the quagmire of political intrigue at court and

lost the king’s favor. After he was dismissed from service by the king of Portugal, he offered

to serve the future Emperor Charles V of Spain.

A papal decree of 1493 had assigned all land in the New World west of 50 degrees W

longitude to Spain and the land east of that line to Portugal. Magellan offered to prove that

the East Indies fell under Spanish authority. On September 20, 1519, Magellan set sail from

Spain with five ships. More than a year later, one of these ships was exploring the topography

of South America in search of a water route across the continent. This ship sank, but the

remaining four ships searched along the southern peninsula of South America. Finally they

found the passage they sought near 50 degrees S latitude. Magellan named this passage the

Strait of All Saints, but today it is known as the Strait of Magellan.

One ship deserted while in this passage and returned to Spain, so fewer sailors were

privileged to gaze at that first panorama of the Pacific Ocean. Those who remained crossed

the meridian now known as the International Date Line in the early spring of 1521 after 98

days on the Pacific Ocean. During those long days at sea, many of Magellan’s men died of

starvation and disease.

Later, Magellan became involved in an insular conflict in the Philippines and was killed in a

tribal battle. Only one ship 17 sailors under the command of the Basque navigator Elcano

survived to complete the westward journey to Spain and thus prove once and for all that the

world is round, with no precipice at the edge.

2. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions:

India’s growing obsession with vehicles and failure to develop roads has increased air

pollution in most cities, the country’s pollution watchdog has revealed. In the past two

decades, the carrying capacity of roads increased by less than 2.5 percent, whereas the

number of vehicles grew at an annual rate of over 10 percent. In 2008, in India, 12 million

vehicles were plying on the 3.5 million km road network. For people, its visible impact has

increased congestion on roads, but what one didn’t see was the higher air pollution.

The high concentration of pollutants like carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons cause lung

cancer and asthma, besides routine breathing problem. The sudden jump in air pollution is a

recent phenomenon, with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) finding that half of the

two wheelers and cars running on Indian roads have been registered in the last five to seven

years. The growth phenomenon in case of heavy vehicles has been less impressive.

The new vehicles, however, are not the sole cause of air pollution. The CPCB said that

vehicles older than 10 years caused 60 percent of vehicular air pollution. And the reason is

poor maintenance and no norms in India for the expiry of a vehicle, especially the private

ones. Adulteration of fuel has been started as another reason for high vehicular pollution.

So far, ironically because of lower level of income thresholds, the Indian market has favoured

small cars and two wheelers. As small engines use less fuel the average fleet-wise fuel

consumption is expected to be low. But already, with rising income levels there is a steady

shift towards bigger cars that use more fuel. Taking their place are the bigger cars in

compact, mid-size and high and segment. Therefore, standards can make a significant

difference in India.

a) What is a major cause of air pollution in India?

b) What has increased more than the carrying capacity of the roads?

c) What causes lungs cancer and asthma?

d) Why do Indians favour small cars and two wheelers?

vehicles older than 10 years caused 60 percent of vehicular air pollution.
