Class of 2018Our AChievements

December 2018 | Tevet 5779

in his book, the road to Character, the new York Columnist David Brooks, distinguishes between what he calls resume virtues and eulogy virtues. resume virtues are the virtues you list on your Cv – they are your list of qualifications, your achievements, your awards and essentially the enterprise skills you bring to the marketplace - those skills many of our Year 12 students have been cultivating over the past 13 years at school, and in particular the past two years as they prepare for the rigours of university placement, work, scholarships and life beyond school. they are skills like creativity, problem-solving, critical thinking, and ethical understanding. it

is argued that these resume skills will bring us opportunity, and hopefully a prosperous livelihood. there is no doubt this awaits our graduates in the future. While these skills are paramount in a global world with many shifting paradigms in the marketplace and the way we live, the eulogy virtues are equally, if not more important, and they are those virtues by which we will be remembered. they are traits like kindness, honesty, integrity, felicity, philanthropy and faithfulness; they are the ideals by which we live, and how we live them, and; they are the virtues that shape our behaviours and define the nature of our relationships with others. the eulogy virtues drive us towards a purposeful future, so important to our young people today – whether that be career, family, and/or service to humanity. they motivate philanthropy and inspire people to make a difference; they drive us to make opportunities available to those less fortunate than ourselves. Our Year 12 graduates are the future benefactors of our community and their spirit of generosity and kindness, so often experienced by us these past few

years, will secure our future and make for a better world.the members of the Class of 2018 are to be commended for their tenacity and commitment throughout their senior studies. their excellent results are testimony to their hard work, partnership with their teachers, and collaborative effort. Kol hakavod!i wish the Class of 2018 b’hatzlacha in the years ahead, and may their lives be filled with many brachot.

Message froM The aCTing heaD of JeWish life & learning

the concept of a journey is quite prominent in Jewish thinking.

the hebrew word for Jewish Law, halachah, means to walk and Derech eretz, the path (or way) of the land, refers to common sense. having graduated, your journey has just begun and i have no doubt it will be exciting and inspiring, but every journey has its ups and downs. J.K rowling’s first harry Potter novel was rejected by 12 publishers before finally being published. the Beatles, after their first performance were told they have no future in show business. how then did they become so successful?

Belief in themselves, tenacity, persistence and a little faith. these attributes will contribute towards your growth and development as you navigate the wonders of a world outside moriah. i know each of you will achieve great success in your chosen paths and i am extremely proud of your accomplishments. i hope you will continue your kesher (connection) with moriah and i look forward to welcoming you back. mazal tov and i wish you only b’racha and hatzlacha for the future.
