INTERNAL VS. EXTERNAL ASSESSMENTS‣ INTERNAL ASSESSMENTS (IA’S)

A. Occur in every course between Dec ‘16 and March ‘18 1. Example: English IOP’s - December ‘16

B. IA’s are 15-40% of final IB score depending on the course D. Submission of IA’s will be handled by Mr. Sheehan

‣ EXTERNAL ASSESSMENTS (EA’S) A. EA’s are seated exams in May 2018 (1-3 EA’s per course)

B. Expect EA’s to start the first full week of May 2018 C. EA schedule is determined by IB & released this summer

D. Participation in EA’s excuses students from senior final exams E. Some EA’s are internally administered (Language WA’s, TOK Essays)

REVIEW OF IB YEAR ONE ASSESSMENTS

▸ Internal Assessments completed by the end of Year One: Literature HL/SL IOP (December), Biology HL IA (May), Physics HL/SL IA (May), Theory of Knowledge Presentation (May)

▸ External Assessments completed by the end of Year One: Literature HL/SL Written Assignment (April/May)

▸ Group 4 Project - Science focused collaborative project completed by all Year One students

OVERVIEW OF IB YEAR TWO ASSESSMENTS▸ Every course has at least one IA to complete before the end of the

course. Any course that did not complete the required IA, will complete it between September and March. Please reference handout for completion months.

▸ The handout reflects the completion date only. Benchmarks are set up over a period of weeks leading up to final completion.

▸ Some IA’s act as Year Two midterms just as some acted as Year 1 midterms (English IOP)

EARNING AN IB DIPLOMA‣ An IB score must have been awarded for each of the six IB Diploma subjects, ToK, and

the Extended Essay. ‣ CAS requirements must be met. ‣ Student must have a score of D or higher in both TOK and the Extended Essay. ‣ Student must earn at least 24 total points. (45 total points possible)

A. The student must earn a total of at least 12 points in HL subjects (for candidates who register for four HL subjects, the three highest HL grades will count toward this total).

B. Students who take 3 HL and 3 SL subjects must earn at least 9 points total in the SL classes.

C. Students who take 4 HL and 2 SL subjects must earn at least 5 points total in the SL classes.

D. The student must earn a 2 or higher in all subjects (no scores of 1). E. There may be no more than two scores of 2, overall. F. There may be no more than three scores of 3 or lower, overall.

CREATIVITY, ACTIVITY, SERVICE▸ CAS is meant to enrich student lives by allowing them a chance to grow through experiences

creatively, via activity and service. Student routinely update their CAS accounts with these experiences.

▸ The CAS Experience begins the first day of Year One and continues through the spring of Year Two. One of the expectations that CAS participation is continuous over the 18 month time period.

▸ Students demonstrate completion of learning outcomes through individual experiences chosen by the student. One of the experiences must be completed as a project lasting for one month, and collaboratively working with at least two other people.

▸ Students are required to log their experiences using the Managebac system by including evidence of their participation in events and reflections on new learning that took place as a result of the experience.

CREATIVITY, ACTIVITY, SERVICE LEARNING OUTCOMES▸ Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

▸ Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

▸ Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

▸ Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

▸ Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

▸ Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

▸ Students show awareness of the consequences of choices and actions in planning and carrying out CAS experiences.

EXTENDED ESSAYI. EE OVERVIEW A. 4,000 word essay of original work

B. Student determines the subject area & research question C. A passing grade is needed to be eligible for the IB Diploma D. Not a requirement for a non-IB Diploma student E. The EE is externally graded by IB Examiners all over the world

II. SUPPORT STRUCTURES A. Every student is assigned a faculty advisor by March 1st of Year One

B. Students will have three mandatory reflective sessions with their advisor (May/June, September/October, January) C. Senior Pathways will delay start until the second MP providing 4 periods per cycle in the first MP to work on EE, CAS, and college essays D. EE Picnic/Work days on 7/13 and 8/15 D. All student/advisor communications occur in the Managebac system

REGISTERING FOR THE IB DIPLOMA PROGRAM‣ Registration will take place in August internally ‣ The IB Organization requires the following of all IB students:

A. Registration Fee (2016): $168.00 one time fee B. Course Fees (2016): $116.00 per course C. Payments will be broken into seven payments on four dates

on payforit.net (May, July, August, October) D. A letter explaining the fees and the payment process will be

sent out via email in April E. Registration occurs in school with students F. Changes to Registration after November 1st will incur

additional fees

Preparing for the Career Fair1. Print copies of your resume 2. Plan to dress appropriately 3. Create a list of companies that you are interested in and research them! 4. Find dates in your calendar that you will be available 5. Create personal brand 6. Practice your handshake and eye contact!
