Class Science JournalTerm 1: Melting Moments

Melted Object 1

1. What do you think this is?

2. Do you think it always looked like this?

3. Why do you think it looks like this now?

Melted Object 2

1. What do you think this is?

2. Do you think this always looked like this?

3. Why do you think it looks like this now?

Look at the un-melted objects…

1. In what ways are they similar?

2. In what ways are they different?

MELT/FREEZE

1. What things have you seen melting/freezing?

2. Why do things melt?

3. What is happening when things melt/freeze?

MELT/FREEZE

1. When do you want things to melt/freeze?

2. Do you have any questions about melting and freezing?

Heat It Up

• We are going to explore what happens when things are heated.

• What do you think might happen?

• Chocolate buttons

• Plastic spoon

• water

Heat It Up

• Where could we put the samples?

• What words could we use to describe the materials? E.g. hot, cold, runny, hotter…

all materials the

team needs

• Makes sure that the

team understands

the team

investigation and

completes each step

• Asks the teacher and

other team speakers

for help

Move into your teams quickly and quietly.

Speak softly.

Stay with your team. Take turns.Perform your role.

Heat It Up

• Scientists call all things that are runny ‘liquids’

• all things that keep their shape ‘solids’

Cool customers

• Lesson goals

• To work in teams and observe what happens when different materials are cooled

• Create a storyboard to explain what has been happening to their materials

Cool customers

Q. What happened to the materials when they were placed in the refrigerator?

1._______________________________________

2._______________________________________

3._______________________________________

Cool customers

We will create a storyboard using what we observe and information we already have.

Use the ‘before and after’ drawings from the resource sheet ‘Heat It Up’. Draw a third square labelled ‘ After freezing’. Leave space for a fourth square.

Cool customers

Predict what might happen if the materials are placed in the freezer. Record your predictions under the storyboard.

Cool customers

What happened to the chocolate when it was heated? ______________________________________________

Why do you think it no longer had the same shape? ______________________________________________

What happened when the chocolate was cooled again?______________________________________________

How could you create chocolates in the shape you want? ______________________________________________

Why didn’t the spoon change shape like the chocolate? _______________________________________________

Cool customers

Q. What will happen to the materials when they are placed in the freezer?

Q. What will happen to the alcohol-based liquid when it is placed in the freezer?

Freeze It!

Goals.

To work in teams to observe what happens when different materials are placed in a freezer.

Play a game of ‘freeze’ and discuss the terms ‘freeze ‘ and ‘melt’

Review and complete storyboards.

Freeze It!

Which materials became solids? _________________________________________

Which materials stayed liquid? _________________________________________

Did your results match your predictions? Why? Why not? _________________________________

What else did you notice? ___________________

What does the term ‘ frozen’ mean? _____________

Freeze It!

Scientists say that materials ‘freeze’ when they change from liquid to solid.

Sometimes solid

Learning goals:

• To role play materials freezing and melting

• Create a table identifying when materials are either solid or liquid

• Identify that adding heat can change solid materials to liquids and removing heat can change liquid materials to solids.

Sometimes solid

What are the differences between solids and liquids?

How would you act on the solids side of the rope?

Liquid side?

Sometimes solid

‘Solid or liquid ?’ table

Room Temperature

plastic

Rubbing alcohol

Sometimes solid

Where are the materials the hottest?

Where are the materials the coldest?

When are the materials liquids?

When are the materials solids?

What can this tell us about what happens when we add heat to a material?

What can this tell us about what happens when we remove heat from a (cool) material?

Sometimes solid

Can the metal and plastic materials become a liquid?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/8_9/solid_liquids.shtml

Scientists explain that almost all solid materials become liquids at different times. Alcohol can become a solid to liquid at low temperatures .

Review class descriptions of solid, liquid, melt and freeze.

Note: Changing materials from solid to liquids changes the shape of objects.
