{Supplies} Heidi Songs DVD from your bonus box. DVD player and television for playing the disc.
{Time}
10 minutes a day until the sight words are learned well.
{Directions}
1. Explain that your child is going to learn to read 24 words quickly. They are the 24 most
common words your child will see when he is reading and you want him to recognize them in
a snap so that he does not waste time sounding them out over and over again.
2. Play one of the songs on the DVD several times through until your child knows the words and
movements well. Make sure to sing along with the song too. Seeing you practice will increase
your child’s motivation.
3. When your child is ready, sing along with a new song several times.
4. Continue singing your way through the DVD for 10 minutes or until your child loses interest.
Note: The order of the words you introduce does not matter.

{Sight Word DVD} Teaching children new things through music helps many students learn more quickly. Heidi Songs’ DVD is one of my favorite ways to introduce sight words because it’s so playful and active. I predict your child will love it too.

Page 9 to 13: Lily Pad printables.
Scissors.
{Time}
10 minutes
{Directions}
1. Before your child joins you, cut out the lily pads. Place 10-‐‑12 sight word lily pads face-‐‑up in a large circle. In the middle, lay down several of the blank lily pads. The layout will look something like this:
2. When your child joins you, explain that he will pretend to be a frog sitting in the middle of a large lake. In order to stay in the game, he must hop to the lily pad you call out without falling in the water. However, there’s one important catch – he can only hop on the blank lily pads in the middle of the lake or the sight word lily pad that you call out. For example, if you said {are}, your child must hop over to the {are} lily pad without touching {have}, {for}, etc.
3. Call out one sight word at a time and have your child hop to it. Continue playing until your child loses interest.

Let’s face it: children love racing, jumping and running through the day. This simple game helps kids burn off a little energy as they hop their way toward learning sight words.

{Spell It, Build It, Write It}
A fast way to teach children new words quickly is to have them play with the words in different ways. This activity does just that by having kids spell, build and write the words. It’s simple but effective.

{Supplies}
Pages 24 to 28: Splat printables.
Scissors.
{Time}
10 minutes
{Directions}
1. Cut out the Splat cards and lay them in a pile face down between two players.
2. Player One picks the top card from the pile. If the card is a sight word, he reads it out
loud and lays it face up in front of him. If the card says “Splat”, he must return the
card to the bottom of the pile.
3. Player Two turns the next card in the pile and follows the same rules outlined in step
two.
4. Player One turns the next card in the pile. If the card is a sight word, he reads it out
loud and lays it face up in front of him. If the card says “Splat”, he returns the card to
the bottom of the pile along with any other sight words he has collected.
5. Play continues until a player collects four sight words.
Page 23

In this game of luck, players try to be the first to collect four sight words. But beware… if a player pulls “Splat”, he loses his cards and must start from scratch.
