How many maritime employees and surveyors
Key
Key
Class societies have surveyors and inspectors that may be dedicated for plan approval, newbuilding work, renewal certification and equipment certification. Many surveyors will work as both a class surveyor and as a surveyor on behalf of a flag authority if the class society has been issued certification as a recognised organisation.
Recognised Organisation for how many flags?Increasingly flag states are turning to the class societies to be ROs. And some flags have a large number of class societies as ROs capable of performing surveys and issuing certification on their behalf.

Class society reportThe shipping industry’s self-appointed safety watchdogs have had to rationalise and diversify in the face of relentless austerity. With increasing competition, and ever tighter margins, who will emerge as the industry leader of years to come?
The infographics below include data supplied by each individual society when requested by Lloyd’s List.
