This spring, the program offers you three new classes, including VART 4: Script Writing for Film & Video; VART 20: Digital Video Production I; and VART 25: Lighting for Digital Video & Film. Explore the basic principles of writing for digital media, develop your idea visually and transform it into a finished shooting script in the four-unit VART 4 class. Taught by award-winning filmmaker Amy Harrison, the four-unit VART 20 course gives you the opportunity to work in groups and individually to produce quality video, and learn various aspects of video production, including cinematography, lighting, storyboarding, directing actors, constructing a scene and capturing an audience. Learn the technical and aesthetic principles of lighting—one of the most critical aspects of video production in the four-unit VART 25 class. You’ll also study color, composition, exposure, light and shadow, three- point lighting, basic electricity and grip equipment. Is a Career Teaching Math orScience Right for You?Foothill College offers an innovative teacher-training programin which you can gain experience teaching math and science at the elementary-,middle- or high-school level. Toparticipate, enroll inFoothill’s PSE 41class. You’ll then bepaired withexperienced mentor-teachers at the K-12level for two hoursper week for theduration of thecollege quarter.

You’ll observeinstruction in the K-12classroom setting, teach small groups of students, participatein relevant discussions pertaining to education, and learn howto become a credentialed K-12 teacher in California. You’ll alsoattend an 80-minute recitation session each week at theFoothill campus. In addition to receiving a $500 learningstipend, this hands-on teaching experience can help youdecide if a career as a math or science teacher is right for you.

Prerequisites for this program include a satisfactory scoreon the Foothill mathematics placement test or completion ofintermediate algebra and a passing score in a college-levelscience class. You are required to undergo a TB test andbackground investigation, both offered at no charge on the Foothill campus, prior to visiting K-12 classrooms.

Foothill Offers Student-FriendlyElementary AlgebraIf you get anxious just thinking about math, or have trouble wrapping

your brain around math concepts, we understand. Every student is

different, and math can be more of a challenge for some students.

At Foothill College, we offer a different approach. We’ve

completely redesigned our five-unit MATH 220: Elementary Algebra

course, and stocked the class with student-friendly materials,

including a textbook and hands-on activities that are easy to read,

and software that’s easy to use. There will also be time in class for small group activities to practice concepts discussed in class.

Our learning objective is to help you master key math concepts, and prepare you to be successful and earn good grades in

VMware Server VirtualizationTake the first course in Foothill’s new VMware servervirtualization series by enrolling in the CNET 80B01: VMwareInfrastructure III–Install & Configure course this spring.Through lectures and hands-on lab assignments, you’ll learnhow server virtualization can transform a single, physicalcomputer host into a vehicle that supports the execution ofmultiple virtual systems, each functioning as a virtualmachine. By implementing server virtualization in a datacenter, an IT organization can reduce its costs, increase theutilization and efficiency of its hardware resources, andprovide high availability for its systems.

Everything You’ve Wanted to Know AboutEinstein but Were Afraid to Ask

Award-Winning Einstein CourseFeatures Stunning New VisualsThis spring, Foothill’s PHYS 12: Physics for Poets course, whichwon the Innovation of the Year Award in 2005, returns withstunning new visuals. Taught by Foothill Astronomy InstructorAndrew Fraknoi, the five-unit course is sometimes called“Everything You’ve Wanted to Know About Einstein but WereAfraid to Ask.”

March 14 is Albert Einstein’s 130th birthday, and although hedied in 1955, his work continues to capture the imagination ofscientists and the public. In the last two years, astronomershave found new confirmation of some of Einstein’s mostbizarre ideas, including giant black holes, gravity acting likethe distorting mirrors of an amusement park, and a strangerepulsive force that is causing the universe to expand faster.Fraknoi, who was named California Professor of the Year in2007, explains all these theories and discoveries in everydaylanguage using analogies and humor instead of math. Thecourse transfers to the UC and CSU systems.

The course will also look briefly at the effects that physicsideas have had on the humanities, including poetry, fiction,music, and the public view of scientists. The course concludeswith a look at the work of Stephen Hawking, whose innovativeideas combine many of these areas and take some ofEinstein’s ideas to the outermost limits of cosmic possibility.

Materials & EngineeringMaterials are the foundation for all engineering applications,and advances inmaterials and theirprocessing aredriving alltechnologies,including the broadareas ofnanotechnology,biotechnology,energy and electronic information technology.

Develop your understanding of the chemical and physicalprinciples of materials by enrolling in Foothill’s four-unit ENGR45: Properties of Materials course. The class transfers to theUC and CSU systems. The lecture portion of the course meetsat Foothill. The lab segment meets at the material engineeringlab at San Jose State University, and includes lab assignmentsin the SJSU Microelectronics Lab, a state-of-the-art clean room.

Build Your Engineering CareerIf you’re considering a profession in engineering, start buildingyour career with Foothill engineering courses this spring.

The one-unit ENGR 49: Engineering Profession class is aweekly seminar that allows you to explore differentengineering career paths, meet engineers from different fieldsand industries, and participate in a related field trip. Thiscourse transfers to UC and CSU campuses.

You can also work as a member of an engineering team todesign and build a robot in the ENGR 20: Introduction toEngineering class. The four-unit course includes a briefbackground in civil engineering and applying concepts frommechanical, electrical, computer and software engineering.You’ll work with other students to produce a robot that mustpass trial runs. You’ll learn how to work in teams, practicecommunication skills, improve technical writing, applyengineering ethics, and manage a project. This class alsotransfers to San Jose State University and selected Universityof California campuses.

Unearth Archaeological Treasures

Study in Ecuador This SummerImmerse yourself in the history and culture ofEcuador and earn from 6 to 12 transferablecollege units by participating in the Foothill-De Anza Campus Abroad Program to Ecuadorthis summer. You’ll live in the majestic Andes ofSouth America at 10,000 feet as you excavatelandscapes that surround the pre-Columbianfortresses of Pambamarca.

With an approximate cost of $1,500,excluding airfare, the program runs June 28—July 25. Foothill Anthropology Instructor Sam Connell will lead the trip and teach anarchaeology and culture program that includes coursework, field trips and working in archaeological dig sites.

Introduction to CircuitsLearn about lumped, linear circuits, and natural and forcedcircuit response in the five-unit ENGR 37: Introduction toCircuits course. You can also register for the optional two-unitENGR 37L lab course to practice verification of theorems andconcepts that you study in class. Train for Career as a Pharmacy Technician, EMT or ParamedicIf you’ve thought about advancing your career by pursuing a high-tech and high-touch professionsuch as an emergency medical technician, paramedic or pharmacy technician, Foothill can helpyou get started. Foothill offers you outstanding career training from expert faculty in state-of-the-art facilities, all at an unparalleled value when compared to private institutions.

The nine-month Pharmacy Technician Program is designed to prepare you for employment invarious hospital units, retail and government health agencies. This program is also a perfect firststep if you have goals of becoming a pharmacist. You must apply by April 30 to be considered forthis program.

If you want a career with more action, Foothill’s EMT and Paramedic programs are idealoptions. Both programs will train you for a rewarding and challenging career working in anemergency room or fire station, or on board an ambulance. You must apply by May 31 to beconsidered for the Paramedic Program, which runs 12 to 15 months. For the six-month EMTProgram, you must register by March 16, which is the day EMT classes begin.
