It has been a rather strange month here at CPR Towers. In just a few short weeks we have been witness to success and tragedy, and incredible generosity that helps to restore some faith in mankind.It all started at the Donington Historic Festival, a superb event and a comparatively new one too, now in only its third year. Spread over three days, it got off to an amazing start, and I would imagine that even the organisers were pinching themselves, hardly daring to believe that they created such a success in such a short time. The atmosphere was relaxed, yet buzzing with excitement, as those in attendance knew that they were involved in something special. And that was how it remained for two and a half days, and then...wham. Tragedy dealt its cruel blow as two cars spun off the track leaving one driver fatally injured. All that success, that feel-good factor, was rendered instantly irrelevant as news of the accident filtered around the track. Since the accident happened, I have been immensely impressed at the way it has been handled by just about everyone involved, excluding of course, the national press. I was touched by the professionalism and sensitivity shown by the teams at Donington Park and Masters Historic Racing. I was even pleased to see that internet discussion boards - often a place of outspoken or ill-informed comments - were avoiding idle speculation, instead preferring to pass on messages of condolence or reminisce about a lost friend. You might think that is a strange thing for me to say, but I come from a background in aviation where each and every accident is discussed by amateur accident investigators on internet forums, and anyone involved directly seems more concerned with distancing themselves from the incident as quickly as possible in case it harms their reputation. It made me realise that car enthusiasts are actually a pretty decent bunch of people. Actually, I knew that already, but this just reinforced it.As if to further prove that point, the Supercar Siege held recently at Leeds Castle in Kent saw a large group of classic and performance car owners give up their spare time, their cars and their petrol to give passenger rides in exchange for charitable donations. The Sporting Bears were there too, running their well established Dream Rides, and the event managed to attract just under 4,000 people. It was a great success, with over £8,000 being raised for the Royal Navy & Royal Marine Children’s Fund. Well done to all involved.Next month’s magazine looks like it will be packed full of automotive events, with the Le Mans 24 Hour Race, Cholmondeley Pageant of Power and the London to Brighton Classic Run already firmly pencilled into the diary. For now though, we hope you enjoy reading this issue of Classic, Performance & Retro!

Brands Clash For MG Classics: May 4/5, saw classic MGs assembled at Brands Hatch racing circuit for the MG Car Club’s second race meeting of the year. Leanne Fahy was there to catch all the action.

The Supercar Siege: Held on May 18, at Leeds Castle in Kent, The Supercar Siege was dreamed up as a way to make money for a deserving children’s charity. Max Walker borrowed a Bentley and headed south to join in the fun.

A Hard Act To Follow: If logic is applied, the Jaguar F-Type must be the natural successor to the E-Type, and that being the case, this is a car with a lot to live up to. Chris McEvoy drives the new Jag.

Triumph & Tragedy: The Donington Historic Festival promised three days of wonderful historic motorsport and a dazzling array of vintage racing cars and would have been one of the best events of the year until it was cut short by a tragic accident. Simon Hazeldine reports.

Record numbers flocked to this year’s Spring Autojumble, held at Beaulieu, Hants, on the May 18-19, making 2013 the most successful year of this event to date. Against the odds and despite some appalling weather forecasts in the week leading up to the event, it actually remained fine and dry for most of the weekend, with sunny spells throughout and just a few showers on the Sunday.Total admissions reached 16,507 – a record breaking number for the Autojumble, up 1,183 on the previous highest total of 15,324, recorded at the first ever Spring Autojumble in 1994. The number of vehicles in the Motormart has reduced in the last couple of years but there has been an increase in the number of autojumble stands, with 1,069 in total over the weekend. Beaulieu says that while the Mart figures are slightly disappointing, the stand and admission figures are very encouraging, and reflect the increasing importance of Beaulieu’s spring event in the autojumble calendar. Beaulieu Events Manager, Judith Maddox, said: “It has been wonderful to see this event grow over the years and we were delighted to finally break the record attendance numbers set in 1994. This year’s show has been thoroughly enjoyable, with some great displays from the car clubs, particularly Morris, with one of the largest club displays we have ever had at the Spring Autojumble.

“We are very grateful that the weather has been kind to us, exhibitors have reported brisk trading with many visitors commenting on the high quality of the stock on offer.” www.beaulieu.co.uk

Historic Ferrari RacerTops Bonham’s Spa Sale The much anticipated sale of a rare 1965 Ferrari 275GTB didn’t disappoint when it was offered at the Bonham’s Spa-Classic auction on May 25, as it topped the day with a bid of €902,750. Described as being rarer - and quicker - than a 250GT SWB, yet considerably less expensive than a 250GTO, the 275GTB is a landmark model in the technological evolution of Ferrari’s road cars, as well as being one of its most beautiful. The car came with a well documented period competition history which showed it had taken part in Italian hill climb events. In July 1966, Fabrizio Ferrari raced the 275GTB at the 5th annual Agordo-Frassené hill climb (Trofeo Esso) organised by the Automobile Club of Belluno, achieving a 2nd-in-class finish. Fabrizio Ferrari and this car were in action again on September 25, 1966, finishing 1st in class at the Belluno Club’s 9th annual Coppa Alpe del Nevegal event. In 1967 it went on to claims further 1st-in-class finishes and at the end of the same year, the car was pictured on page 36 of the official Ferrari Yearbook.Perhaps not a car for the purists or concours enthusiasts, since when it left the Maranello factory it was painted Azzuro (blue) with Pelle Nera (black leather) interior, but thanks to its history, it proved to be a popular lot with connoisseurs of historic racing. www.bonhams.com

If you want to see some seriously cool cars, maybe grab a ride in one or two of them, and do your bit for charity too, then head down to Dunsfold aerodrome in Surrey on June 15-16, for The Supercar Event. Held at the now famous ‘Top Gear test track,’ home of ‘The Stig,’ the fund-raising weekend is expected to attract over 500 performance and classic cars, many of which will be available to give visitors a ride around the Dunsfold track. The owners of the cars provide the cars, their time and the petrol, and in exchange for a small donation, visitors can experience the sensation of being driven rather quickly in machines such as the Ferrari 458 Italia, McLaren MP4-12C, Pagani Zonda, Aerial Atom, and many more. there will be other attractions too, such as helicopter rides, trade stalls, children’s entertainment, live music, fairground rides and paintballing. Tickets are priced at £10.00 for adults and £6.00 for children under 16. Family tickets (two adults & two children) are priced at £25.00. Cheshire based Triumph TR specialist TR Bitz currently has a rather special car offered for sale; the first ever TR5 to roll of the production line. The car is probably best described as ‘tatty’ and would benefit from a full restoration. It has had just three previous owners and has a recorded mileage of 65,077 and is described as “totally original” by the vendor. The first owner was a Triumph employee and another former owner bought the car in 1999 and stored it until 2007. Silverstone Auctions will be offering a rather battered Mini Clubman 1275 GT bodyshell at its Silverstone Classic auction on July 27, but it’s a car with a fascinating history. The Mini was discovered in the tunnels under the Longbridge factory where it had sat undisturbed for over 30 years, making it the last ever BL built Mini to leave the famous site.The iconic car was used by factory workers to travel around the sprawling plant until being ‘dumped’ by workers in the secret tunnel following damage to it, when a storage container fell on it. However, photos of the famous ‘lost’ Mini, renowned amongst the work force, emerged last year when it was then saved by a former employee who received permission to remove it in 2012. This was just prior to the tunnel being filled in for development work that was due to take place on the site. It then became the legendary ‘last Mini’ to ever leave the site. When the car was extracted from the tunnel last year, it caused ripples around the world in Mini circles, with some believing it should have remained where it was to mark the history and heritage of the site. Despite its historical significance, anyone considering buying the car should note that it has been abandoned for many decades and various items have been removed over time. These include the engine, gearbox and all associated running gear and ancillaries. Sporting Bears To Stage Memorable London Trip For Hospice Children

Tuesday July 2, 2013, will be a very special day for ten children from a number of UK children’s charities & hospices that the Sporting Bears Motor Club has supported recently. Ten Bentley cars, loaned by Bentley Motors Ltd, will be escorted by the Metropolitan Police outriders, on a route through Central London before finally crossing Westminster Bridge to the Houses of Parliament where the children will get to meet their MPs.The Sporting Bears have arranged for the children and their parents to travel to London on Monday July 1, and stay as guests with Hilton London Metropole. The well-known hotel chain is generously providing ten rooms completely free of charge, and the families will stay in stylish and spacious rooms, with skyline views across London the night before the event. The Sporting Bears say that while it was a difficult to choose only five out of the many children’s charities the club has supported, the even harder task of selecting only two children from each organisation fell to the care teams in each of the selected charities, which are:

Touring car hero Steve Soper is ready to make for a very welcome competitive comeback at this summer’s Silverstone Classic (26-28 July).The 61-year-old was forced out of the sport on medical advice following a heavy crash in the final round of the 2001 MSA British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch. However, following a recent operation on his damaged neck, he has now been given the all clear and is ready join the growing number of racing legends competing in what’s firmly established as the world’s biggest motor racing festival. Soper will make his eagerly-anticipated return sharing a Ford GT40 with close friend David Cuff in the two-driver World Sportscar Masters which features a full 58-car grid of glorious Le Mans-style sportscars from 1962-1974 era.

“It’s going to be great to make my comeback with David racing a GT40 at the Silverstone Classic,” said Soper. “It’s such a mega event. I went last year and the racing was just fantastic; now I’m looking forward to be taking part in it.”Voted ‘the greatest saloon car driver of all times’ by an panel of experts in a poll conducted by Motor Sport magazine, Soper attributes his imminent return to a combination of worsening health and medical advances.

“After the accident I was told to totally change my lifestyle, so that’s what I did. I totally stopped racing and concentrated on my BMW dealership in Lincoln,” he explained. “But last year I started getting pins and needles in my fingers, so I went back to see the specialist. To cut a long story short, he insisted I had an operation on my damaged neck which, thanks to today’s technology, has replaced three of my discs and two vertebrae with carbon cages. The surgeon tells me that, after the three and half hour operation in January, my neck is now as strong as it was when I was 21 and therefore has cleared me to start competing again.”The news came as huge relief to Soper who admitted to being an increasingly frustrated spectator. “I’m still a petrol head and I find it difficult to be at a race meeting and not to be involved. More so recently as I’ve seen so many of my old friends having such fun in these fabulous historic events like the Silverstone Classic and Goodwood Revival. Now I’m back and really looking forward to doing a few selected meetings such as those, when lucky enough to be invited.”The GT40 in which Soper will be making his comeback in July is currently nearing completion at renowned GT40 experts Gelscoe Motorsport in Derbyshire. www.silverstoneclassic.com

Lyons Roars To Victory At Brands Hatch

Michael Lyons starred at the Brands Hatch Masters Festival last weekend by guiding his RAM Williams FW07 to two wins in the FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship. Starting race one from pole position, Michael stormed away from the opposition, only for a safety car period to bunch up the back again. On the restart, Michael broke away once more, pursued by Simon Fish (Ensign N180) and Ian Simmonds (Tyrrell 012). Michael won the second race equally impressively as his Williams built an advantage over Fish, but a superb fight for third place between Simmonds and Mike Wrigley (Williams FW07) was won by Simmonds after a race-long duel.Leo Voyazides and Simon Hadfield triumphed once again in the FIA Masters Historic Sports Car Championship enduro, their dominant Lola T70 chased home by Steve Allen/David Gathercole (Lola T212) and Manfredo Rossi di Montelera (Abarth Osella PA1). Mike Whitaker won the Gentlemen Drivers Pre-66 GT race after the similar TVR Griffith of Sean and Michael McInerney suffered a broken diff and retired with just 13 minutes to go, Ed Morris taking second in his Lotus Elan, while factory BMW GT racer Yelmer Buurman was fourth sharing Shirley van der Lof’s AC Cobra.World Touring Car Champion Rob Huff helped Desmond Smail (Mini Cooper S) to a win in Saturday’s up to 2-litre Touring Car race after Nick and Keith Padmore (Mini Cooper S) copped a stop-go penalty for a pit stop infringement. Leo Voyazides (Ford Falcon Sprint) won the over two-litre race but couldn’t stop Henry Mann/Anthony Reid on the Grand Prix circuit as their Ford Mustang beat a mighty field with Niki Faulkner/Dan Cox (Ford Falcon Sprint) taking second and Voyazides third.Manfredo Rossi di Montelera took honours in the first 70s Celebration race on the Indy circuit, but his Porsche 935 ran dry of fuel in Monday’s GP circuit race on the last lap, gifting a win to Jon Finnemore/Chris Beighton (Sunbeam Tiger), while Ben Mitchell (Van Diemen RF87) won the Ronnie Peterson Trophy for FF1600 cars. Drayson Racing will attempt to set a new land speed record on June 25, at Elvington in Yorkshire, when the team’s all-electric Drayson B12 69/EV will try to break a 40 year old record for the highest speed achieved by a sub 1,000kg vehicle. The team - headed by Lord Paul Drayson - is making the attempt to demonstrate just how far electric vehicle technology has come, and possibly what we can expect from racing cars of the future. Lord Drayson will be at the controls for the attempt and will aim to better the current record of 175mph set by Battery Box General Electric in the United States which has stood since 1974. Rule Britannia!

The ninth edition of Tour Britannia, Britain’s only classic race and rally tour, has been hailed a success by competitors after two full days of competition (10/11 May). Races at Mallory Park and Silverstone and 18 asphalt special stages from a base at Warwick made up the 2013 route. For the sixth time in a row, a Porsche won the Competition Category as Phil Hindley and Andy Bull became the first crew to take back-to-back wins on the event. While Hindley took his Tech 9-built 911SC to victory by two and a half minutes, the later 911 of Duncan and Cate Buck won the Targa Category for post ’81 cars and the 356 of Melissa Raven and Jeremy Haylock won the concurrent Regularity Category by the narrowest of margins from the Jaguar XK150 of Richard Dresner and Colin Mackenzie.Three Porsche 911s battled for the remaining podium places and it was Adrian Kermode/Sarah Bennett-Baggs who took second, with Kermode tackling the stages and Bennett-Baggs doing the races. Third was a great result for the 911 of John Spiers/Susanne Niedrum, although Tony Robinson and Mark Witherspoon were in the contest until they dropped time with an electrical fault at Stoneleigh. MG Owners’ Club staff member Will Punchard and his co-driver Jon House handed over a cheque for £4,058.04 to Ben Sykes, the Regional Manager of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research on May 21. The money was raised by the MG enthusiasts after the pair embarked on a three-week long European road trip which saw them drive over 6,000 miles around the Balkan Sea in an MGB. The two men covered over 6,000 miles in the 1969 Roadster and travelled through 14 different countries.The two friends had quite a few adventures during the epic journey. The car itself, which actually belongs to the club, performed well with only a few minor problems to contend with, all of which were fixed by Will and Jon, or by local garages. At an overnight stop in Tallinn the MGB’s hood was slashed and a few valuables taken, but a waterproof repair was achieved by using the time-honoured repair technique - gaffer tape! There were quite a few near misses in the wild Balkan traffic and the terrible road surfaces took their toll on the MGB, but the determined crew completed the trip without mishap and managed to return to the UK unscathed. The journey actually took place last year, concluding on August 7, but the pair continued to raise funds after they got back. As Will works in the MG Owners’ Club Spares & Accessories Department handling the export orders, we were wondering if this trip was actually a clever way of delivering parts to his Balkan customers. this country has seen for generations, they decided to launch a brand new historic motorsport show. The ticket-buying public was thinking long and hard before parting

with hard earned cash, and with excellent events like the Silverstone Classic, Goodwood Festival of Speed and Cholmondeley Pageant of Power already established

The Donington Historic Festival promised three days of wonderful historic motorsport and a dazzling array of vintage racing cars and would have been one of the best events of the year until it was cut short by a tragic accident. Simon Hazeldine reports.

as firm favourites, it would take something a bit special to tempt visitors to Donington Park. Thankfully, special is exactly what we got.Now in only its third year, the Donington Historic Festival has already made a name for itself as one of the UK’s top historic motorsport events,

and it’s not difficult to see why. If I had to sum up the reason for its success in one word, I would have to say: atmosphere. The whole event has a really friendly feel about it, and has done since day one. Everybody there just seems to be having a great time, whether it’s the drivers

and crews of the historic racers, or the paying punters who have unrivalled access to some of the rarest cars on the planet. The ‘access all areas’ philosophy also plays a major part in pumping up that ‘feel good factor’ as there is a complete absence of ropes and barriers which usually restrict

public movement at these events. Yep, you can wander at will through the paddock, chat to drivers and mechanics, peer into the cockpits and engine bays of the cars, and generally get as close to the cars as you like. Sure, if you start wiggling bits you will be politely told to “get yer hands off,” but otherwise you can go where you like, with the exception of the garages and pit lane. So what does that sort of access mean? Well, I suppose the person to ask that question to would be the young lad who was standing just inches away

from Ayrton Senna’s Tolman F1 car as it fired up in the paddock before heading out for its demonstration laps. Big, silly grin doesn’t even begin to cover it! Anyway, enough of that.

In its first two years, the festival had always been a two-day event, but this year saw it switch to a new three-day format with the additional day being the Friday. I had originally planned to go on just the Saturday and Sunday, but a last minute change of plans saw me at a loose end on the Friday, so what the heck, why not do all three days?I was glad I made the effort. I think even the organisers will admit that the Friday was a little more low key and slightly less spectacular than the following two days, but with it being a normal working day, there was far fewer spectators than you normally get on the

Saturday or Sunday. The ‘feel-good factor’ was still there, but it had a more cosy, intimate feel about it. At times, it seemed like there were more competitors and crews in the paddock than spectators and it felt like I had crashed a private race meeting. The vast majority of the track action on the Friday consisted of qualifying sessions for the main races which were to be held the following day, but there were three races to keep spectators entertained.

These were the first races of the weekend for the E-type Challenge, the Formula Junior and the Pre-63 GT classes.

The E-Type challenge is something of an oddity as originally it was planned to run for just one year only to mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic Jaguar, but it proved so popular with both drivers and spectators that it is still going strong three years later. The race itself was entertaining, won by John Pearson (car 53) after an intense battle with Alex Buncombe (car 40). It seemed that this race would go down to the wire, but Buncombe’s car pitted on lap 14 and retired with mechanical problems. Perhaps the only disappointing aspect of the Friday was that the awesome Group C cars

were not scheduled to appear, although we were treated to a few demonstration laps by Ayrton Senna’s Tolman TG-184-01. In fact, there were no fewer than seven cars at Donington that had been driven by the Brazilian legend at some point in his career, brought together to mark the

20th anniversary of Senna’s famous British Grand Prix victory in 1993 right here at Donington Park. In fact, for many, the highlight of the weekend will have been seeing (and hearing!) Senna’s Lotus 97T screaming around the Donington circuit, emblazoned in that famous

black and gold JPS livery - seriously impressive!

Successful FormulaThe Saturday and Sunday stuck firmly to the same successful formula used during the previous two years, with both days being a mix of qualifying and racing. The group C cars made their first appearance of the weekend early on Saturday morning, while at the opposite end of the speed scale, the cars competing in the HGPCA Nuvolari Trophy for pre-1940 GP cars were a sight to behold. These priceless automotive antiques racing flat out, wheel-to-wheel in ‘no holds barred’ racing, just awesome!Incredibly, some of these ancient cars actually raced at Donington Park back in the 1930s. Among these, was the priceless straight-eight Alfa

W125 Grand Prix car. Close-up inspection revealed that the level of detail on this car is just breath-taking, and it certainly looked the part out on the track.

display consisted of a scaled down replica of the ‘Dunlop bridge’ which was once a famous landmark at Donington, and the ‘bridge’ acted as a gateway to the Senna cars display.Most of the stall holders seemed to be doing good business which was pleasing to see, however, the only ones that didn’t seem busy were the food vendors.

Romeo P3 of music impresario Tony Smith which is the very car in which celebrated Bedfordshire aviator Richard ‘Mad Jack’ Shuttleworth won the inaugural Donington Grand Prix in 1935.Of course, there was also Alfa Romeo Monza and 1750GS models, Bugatti T35s and T37s and a T39, a bevy of ERAs, the raucous Frazer Nash Nurburg, four, six and eight cylinder Maseratis, the Parnell-MG and a wonderfully gruff Talbot-Lago T26SS. To see these cars powering through Redgate corner with the drivers applying opposite lock to keep the cars on track was just fantastic.There was so much going on it would be impossible to describe it all in just a few brief pages, so I wont even attempt to, but among the other highlights were the Historic F2 cars, the machines taking part in the Stirling Moss Trophy for Pre-61 Sportscars, and the 1000km for pre-72 sports-racing-cars. Donington Park’s owner, Kevin Wheatcroft also took to the track to give a few demonstration laps in his replica 1937 Mercedes-Benz

the fence, but for a few brief minutes, the RyanAir and easyJet Boeing 737s gave way to the sights and sounds of the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight aircraft. On the Friday it was just a solitary Douglas C-47 Dakota, painted in full ‘D-Day’ markings, while Saturday saw the Lancaster bomber make an appearance flanked by a Spitfire and Hurricane.

Not really that surprising, since they were charging extortionate prices for barely edible food. It seems that spectators have got wise to this as I walked past several food vendors and nobody was buying from them.The skies above Donington Park are always full of aeroplanes, thanks mainly to East Midlands Airport being located just the other side of

On Sunday, it was just the Lancaster on its own, which somehow seemed more poignant.

Tragedy StrikesSadly, it was around the time that the Lancaster flew over on Sunday that the weekend came to a premature and tragic end. During the ‘Masters Pre-66 Touring Cars race’ and incident down near Coppice saw car number 67, a 1965 Mini Cooper S driven by Christian Devereux, come off the track with the driver having sustained fatal injuries. The race was immediately abandoned and all subsequent racing was cancelled. It was a devastating way to conclude what had been up until that point a hugely successful weekend. Naturally, I felt great sympathy for the poor driver and his family, yet I also felt for the festival’s organisers who I am sure were living out their worst nightmare.

Sunday morning we were very pleased with the attendance numbers, the quality of racing and of the various displays, as well as the friendly atmosphere that continues to make this event so special. But, of course, all that pales into insignificance in the light of that afternoon’s tragedy. Now the thoughts of the Donington Historic Festival team are very much with the family and friends of Christian Devereux, and everybody affected by the accident.”

Inevitably, after incidents like this one people start questioning whether we should be racing these cars at all. Let’s face it, the vast majority of these historic cars wouldn’t even come close to meeting modern safety requirements, yet thanks to roll-cages, fire extinguishers, flame retardant overalls and carbon fibre helmets, the drivers are far better protected than those who campaigned the cars in their heyday.Motorsport is risky, so is flying, white-water rafting and even crossing the road, but we do it with full knowledge of the risks involved. We could eliminate all risk by just staying at home in bed, but that is hardly ‘living,’ is it? While it is a well used cliché, it is probably true to say that Christian Devereux was living his life to the full and doing what he loved doing at the time of his tragic accident, and

hopefully his family can take some small shred of comfort from that. It had been a weekend of many highs rounded off with one mighty crushing low, but up until the tragedy it had been one of the best historic motorsport events I have ever attended. Speaking after the event, festival organiser Duncan Wiltshire said: “This was the third Donington Historic Festival, and the first to be held over three days. By the

A Hard Act To FollowIf logic is applied, the Jaguar F-Type must be the natural successor to the E-Type, and that being the case, this is a car with a lot to live up to. Chris McEvoy gets his hands on the new car and takes it for a spin round Silverstone.

It was a bold move by Jaguar; some would say it was inevitable. The iconic

British brand has almost its entire heritage built on models like the C-Type, D-Type and of course, the near legendary E-Type, and the mere thought of trying to add to that lineage is enough to cause uproar in all but the most liberal of

the nation’s oak panelled gentlemen’s clubs. Which ever way you look at it, any car bearing the F-Type name will undoubtedly be compared to the E-type. Every aspect, every detail and every performance

figure will be raked over in minute detail to see if the car is indeed a worthy successor to the sixties icon.

To say the E-type is a hard act to follow is the understatement of the year. You have to remember, it was a car described by non other than Enzo Ferrari as “the most beautiful car ever made.” It was the car of choice for nearly every sixties celebrity, including George Best, Brigitte Bardot, Tony Curtis and Steve McQueen. Along with the AC Cobra, the E-Type is often blamed for the introduction of the UK’s 70mph motorway speed limit, after press reports claimed Jaguar

was testing the cars at speeds of up to 150mph on the M1. The E-Type was an important part of automotive history; it made its mark on society, and even today, as we travel around the country at no more than 70mph, the E-Type still shapes the way we drive. There really is so much at stake here. Jaguar’s whole reputation as a performance car maker hinges on the success of the F-Type. Getting it badly wrong would not just affect future sales, it would also harm reflect badly on Jaguar’s heritage, particularly that of the E-Type

which is so intrinsically linked to the new car. Ghosts Of the PastMonsterNaturally I was keen to find out for myself just how the new ‘Jag’ measured up to its predecessor, so when I was offered the opportunity to drive it on the famous Silverstone Grand Prix circuit, I didn’t need asking twice. This wasn’t just any old F-Type either; this was the supercharged 5.0 litre Jaguar F-Type V8S - a monster of a car that according to the manufacturer produces 489bhp and can reach a (restricted)

top speed of 186mph. Not only would I get to play with the range topping F-type, I would also be testing it on the full Silverstone International Circuit, the exact same course that the Formula1 cars use. That meant we would be using the recently built garages and pit lane which are part of the new ‘Silverstone Wing’ complex. I was introduced to experienced professional Porsche Cup racing driver, Chris Dymock, who would give me a few demo laps around the circuit before handing the

car over to me, but before we got started, I spent a little time getting acquainted with the new Jaguar.The exterior design of the F-type isn’t exactly breaking new ground, in fact quite the opposite. It is perhaps best described as a safe design,

sticking broadly to the tried and tested shape that most convertible sports cars seem to adhere to these days (see the Aston Martin Virage V12 Volante, Maserati GranTurismo MC Convertible, BMW Z4 and so on...). Change the front and rear styling to suit the

corporate identity, and bingo, a new sports car! It looks a bit like a modernised XK8, which is not that surprising since the F-Type is based on a shortened XK convertible platform. In fact, if you look really carefully, you can see bits of the old XK8 still clearly

visible on the F-Type, like the windscreen frame and door shells for example. It still looks pretty good, but surely a car that is deemed worthy enough to carry the F-Type moniker should have been a ‘clean sheet’ design, not a restyled version of a car that

has been around since 1996? pushing 6ft3in, and usually, when in a convertible car, the top of my head is exposed to some severe wind buffeting. Thankfully that wasn’t the case with the F-type; I was looking through the windscreen and not over it! The car has obviously been designed with

SensationalSo what is the F-Type like to drive? In a word, sensational! The first thing I noticed as I climbed into the passenger seat next to Chris was that there is plenty of room in this car. I’m

taller drivers in mind, and that is surprising, because this is apparently the smallest car the company has produced since it built the XK120 in 1954. Anyway, I digress.My introduction to the F-Type’s performance couldn’t have been more thrilling, as Chris accelerated out of the pit lane and onto the track and ‘break-neck’ speed. Like any true

racing driver, Chris only knows how to drive at one speed, and that is flat out. Lord only knows what the Jaguar people must have been thinking as they looked on as ‘their’ car was being thrashed to within an inch of its life.Each time the supercharger did its thing, I felt a firm shove in my back as the car surged forward like a jet fighter on

reheat. Nailing the apexes and treading the same racing line as ‘Vettel and Co’ do each year was quite an experience, but I was keen to try the car out for myself, so I was pleased as Chris head back into the pit complex so I could have a go.

Don’t Stack It!A quick pep talk from my mentor, and I soon found myself cruising out onto the Silverstone track, admittedly a little slower than we had gone on the previous outing. I wanted to see for myself just how well the F-type handles at speed, yet at the same time, I was telling myself to take it steady. No journalist

want to be remembered as ‘the guy that stacked the F-type at Silverstone!’ A squeeze of the throttle and I notice how smooth the power delivery is from the Jag’s V8 engine. The car tears up the track and quickly I am upon the first corner; it presents no problem as the powerful brakes instantly reduce the velocity and a deft turn of the leather wheel soon had the corner in the rear view mirror. Albeit with a slight degree of tyre squeal. Onto the next corner, and with seamless changes from the eight-speed ‘QuickShift’ transmission, it was actually relatively easy to drive in ‘bruiser’ mode. Even the magnificent Meridian Sound system was rendered unnecessary as the Jaguar treated all who would listen to its V8 aural symphony. After a few more laps I was finding it easier to place the car accurately, with a good line into the corners and predictable

exit lines, driving this car was a whole heap of fun.From a driving and performance point of view, it was noticeable the when driven sedately, the F-type is an effortless, stylish, comfortable cruiser, even for six-footers, and it’s a car that won’t frighten your grandmother. On the other hand, if you take it out on the open road and put the

hammer down, it has the ability to eat the miles, devour corners, crackle and pop on the over run, and put a big grin on your face that’ll last the whole journey. In the classic film Metropolis by Fritz Lang, it was stated that “the moderator between the head and the hand must the heart” in the case of the Jaguar F-Type, it’s your right foot

A bumper action packed weekend of racing saw Brands Hatch play

host to the MG Car Club on May 4-5. Together with the usual collection of impressive

race series’, the club was joined by the Porsche Club Championship and the Classic Sports Car Club (CSCC), to provide two full days of fast paced on track entertainment.

After a Saturday morning dedicated to qualifying, we had nine races to hold the spectator’s attention for the rest of the day. Race one saw the Porsche Club

Championship leap into action, with an eventful outing to kick start the Brands adventure. Pole sitter Tom Bradshaw leapt to the fore as the five red lights went out, followed by fellow front row starter Mark Sumpter. Third placed man Mark McAleer soon began to make waves when he weaved his way through to second, to demote Sumpter to third.

After an appearance by the safety car the racing resumed, with 13 minutes of action to the chequered flag. Before long the safety car was deployed once more, as the field trailed at a controlled pace. With six minutes left to race the action got underway

once more, as Bradshaw and McAleer sprinted towards the chequered flag. With just 0.826 seconds between them, Bradshaw scored victory over McAleer and Sumpter, with Adrian Slater in fourth. Race two saw Sumpter lead away from the grid this time around, with Bradshaw second and Pete Morris third. Before

long the safety car made yet another appearance out on track. At the restart Slater edged ahead of Morris to move into third place, as Bradshaw completed his own overtake on Sumpter for the lead. Unable to affect Bradshaw’s advantage, Sumpter followed him across the finish line, as Morris moved back to third behind.

MGs On Track!The MG Trophy Championship again saw action in abundance, with the usual suspects providing the thrills and spills. A second place start quickly became the lead for Paul Luti, as Doug Cole followed. Drama for Chris Bray meant he was unable to start, as Luti and Cole battled for supremacy. With just three minutes to go, Cole slipped by into the lead, however with just seconds left Luti regained his earlier advantage as the chequered flag fell. Behind, Dan Neaves fought off Ross Makar for third, whilst Andrew Ashton again scored Class C honours. Determined to make amends for his non-start yesterday, a good start gave Bray the leap forward he needed. As he led the field Bray was able to develop a cushion of 10 seconds, whilst Luti and Cole

scrapped behind. After 22 laps it was Bray who was crowned victorious, with Luti holding onto second, just 1.6 seconds ahead of a feisty Cole. Dan and Ollie Neaves provided great entertainment, with Dan finishing ahead in the end in fourth and Ollie fifth. Andrew Ashton again secured a Class C triumph. Russell McCarthy won Saturday’s BCV8 Championship race, just 0.548s ahead of his

nearest challenger Spencer McCarthy. Spencer had held the advantage in the early stages, however a determined Russell found his way to the head of the field with five minutes to go.

GTS race. Early leader Smith came under pressure from the chasing Begbie, before the pair entered a fierce tussle, swapping positions lap after lap. A safety car early on haltered the chase, before the battle resumed at the restart. Despite each showing their dominance, it was Smith who held the lead when the flag fell, with Begbie second and Malcolm Gammons third. Smith tasted victory again on Sunday, after developing a gap of 19 seconds back to Malcolm Gammons in second. A close pursuit for second saw Gammons forced to fend off advances from Robi Bernberg, with the pair taking the chequered flag close together. Mike Williams turned pole position into victory in the first MG Metro Cup outing. After initially losing the lead to Tom Sanderson, Williams trailed for a number of laps, before getting the jump on his opponent towards the end.

Insurance Challenge race. Cripps scored victory over Prior in the Thoroughbred element of the race, whilst Peter Best Insurance Challenge honours went to Barry Holmes. It was Russell McCarthy’s turn to sample victory on Sunday, when a close tussle with Cripps led him to the winners circle. Cripps managed to

edge ahead of McCarthy during this second encounter, however after finding a way back past it was McCarthy who collected the chequered flag. Holmes again won the Peter Best Insurance Challenge. A rolling start proved to be triumphant for Ian Hall in the first CSCC Special

regain the position in time for the flag.

Chris Whiteman dominated the second outing, to take victory by 15.294 seconds. Birley, Gent and Wise enjoyed a repeat of their race one performance, with a finish in the same order. Birley’s Ford Escort Cosworth led him to a controlled victory, whilst Gent and Wise battled until the chequered flag fell. The Historic Intermarque with Iconic 50’s Sports Cars saw Brian Arculus romp to victory, leading the way from Andy Shepherd. John Hilbery completed the podium in third place, after displacing John Harker earlier on. David Walley and Ian Thompson enjoyed a close scrap from start to finish in the Saloon vs Sports Car Challenge and JEC Powered by Jaguar race. As the pair weaved around the Indy circuit, they were able to develop a substantial gap to

Saloons encounter. In a field of impressive machinery, it was Hall who turned pole into victory, ahead of Simon Allaway and Paul Sibley. The same trio returned to their same spots in the second appearance for the CSCC Special Saloons on Sunday, as Hall led Allaway to the chequered flag. Sibley initially lost third place to Thomas Carey, however he managed to

For some time now I have had the honour of being involved with the Sporting

Bears Motor Club, an organisation which raises money for children’s charities. The work we do is fairly well known in the UK’s classic car world, but if you are reading this in somewhere like the USA (this is a global internet magazine after all!), then you might not be aware of what we do.Basically, our club members use their cars to raise money for

selected children’s charities by attending events where members of the public can take a ride in one of the cars, in exchange for a charitable donation. We call them ‘Dream Rides,’ because some of the cars available to ride in are very special indeed. To give you an example, how

about a Ferrari 458 Italia, or a Lamborghini Aventador, maybe a Jaguar XJ220, a Ford GT40 and just about any other supercar you can name! The owners of these cars give up their spare time, their petrol and in some cases, their tyre rubber, to help raise vitally needed funds for the charities,

and to date the Dream Rides programme has raised over £1million for some very deserving kids.

fact that my wonderful and very supportive wife would no doubt confirm, so I don’t deliberately go looking for new events to get involved with. However, sometimes I stumble on something which just seems to tick all the boxes.“I would like to extend an invitation to all to come

and enjoy a day at the ‘Loveliest Castle in the World’, Leeds Castle in Kent,” started the shout-out on a well-known internet forums for petrolheads. It was an invitation to a new event called ‘The Supercar Siege’ which would use the Dream Rides format to

raise money for Royal Navy & Royal Marines Children’s Fund. Judging by some of the responses already on the forum, the ‘petrolhead’ community was already rallying round to make this a truly special day.One of the main people behind the event was fellow

Sporting Bears member Baz Firth, someone with a passion to accept great opportunities and make them work. On a Royal Navy evening he met and then agreed with the boss of Leeds Castle that he could have use of the entire castle grounds to put on The Supercar Siege, and then set about organising the event despite being based away from home for six weeks! With the superb venue secured, we just needed

to sort out the activities for the day, which in fact was actually quite an easy job as the Sporting Bears Dream

Ye Olde Bentley BlaggerThrough his military connections Baz arranged for a Royal Navy Sea King helicopter to land in the middle of the castle grounds and remain on static display for the event. Then it was just a case of accepting the generous offers of support of many south-east based car clubs, from Mustangs

to SELOC. My job? Well I managed to borrow not one, but two shiny, new Bentley Mulsannes, thanks to the very generous people at Bentley Motors Limited in Crewe, Cheshire, and bring them down to The Supercar Siege to use as Dream Rides cars. In fact, having the Bentleys there seemed quite appropriate as Leeds Castle was the final stop for the famous Bentley Boys before crossing the Channel and launching their famous raid on

Le Mans in the 1920s.Fellow Bears Andy & Katy took Mulsanne No2 and I drove Paul (the man who took the amazing photos for this article) in the No1 car. The sumptuous specifications

always amaze in this luxurious, but fast accelerating beauty, and the looks we got on the Motorways with two Mulsannes in convoy were quite something! An early morning start saw

us cruising up the impressive driveway to Leeds Castle. As you pass through the trees, the splendour of the castle itself emerges, with peacocks strutting around and the rumble of approaching supercars. Organisers Ross and Baz were already on site, the Leeds Castle event team was in place and Royal Navy Cadets were arriving as extra help for what would be a very busy and special day.

castle, and six cars displayed inside the castle’s courtyard (tight squeeze taking a Bentley Mulsanne through the castle arch....breathe in Max!), while garaged.com brought their Gullwing and kindly sponsored the Sea King too. As the day went on it was pleasing to see so many

people at the event and even more gratifying to see the Dream Rides cars frequently heading in and out of the castle grounds; the busier the cars were, the more money we would make for the charity. The event was also blessed with some excellent weather which no doubt helped swell

the numbers coming through the gate.

to display (thank to all the cars clubs!). This made the whole event worthwhile, especially to the children we supported from the Royal Navy & Royal Marine Children’s Fund. We rounded the day off with a charity auction, where the highest bidder would receive

a personal meet & greet with former F1 driver Johnny Herbert and get to sit in a Jordan F1 car at one of his theatre show, thanks to www.car-racing-legends.co.uk that added an additional £180.00 to the grand total.The event had been a huge success, with some amazing

cars in a wonderful setting raising lots of money for a very deserving cause. Does it get any better than that? Naturally, we have already decided to do it all again next year, so keep a look out for the date and come and join us at this very worthwhile event. See you there!

Ever since Burton Power introduced its alloy sump for right-hand drive Ford Escort models, such as the Mk1 Escort RS2000 & Mk2 Escort RS2000/Mexico, the Essex-based company has been inundated with requests for a left-hand drive version of this much sought after part. New parts for the increasingly rare Lotus Europas seem to be few and far between these days, so it was pleasing to hear that Gaz has introduced a set of adjustable rear dampers which will fit Europa S2s with the De Dion axle. The dampers are fully adjustable via a small rotating knob on the side of each unit which means they can be adjusted without having to remove them from the car. The dampers can be adjusted for both bump and rebound rates, as well as ride height. The latter is achieved by means of locking spring platforms on a rust-proof, coarse thread. Bump and rebound rates are adjustable by a knob on the side of the damper body.GAZ say that the dampers are set up at the factory for general road use and they will also be suitable for the occasional track and sprint use, or they can be set up for dedicated track day or serious racing use if you prefer.56 www.cprmag.co.uk

Every now and then, somebody comes up with one of those ‘eureka’ products, and this Triumph TR4-TR6 Emergency Bonnet Release Kit is exactly that. For years, owners of Triumph TRs have tensed up every time they pull the bonnet release cable, knowing that if the cable breaks, it is almost impossible to get the bonnet open again without cutting a hole in it.This new kit from Moss Europe gives owners a lifeline, by allowing an emergency release system to be fitted alongside the conventional release cable. It works well, but the only downside is that a small hole needs to be drilled in the firewall in order to fit it. That might put a few people off, especially as stock, unmodified TRs are rising in value with each passing day, but drilling a small hole in the car will seem trivial compared to the pain you will go through if the cable ever breaks!

In practice for the 1960 Portuguese Grand Prix, Jim Clark crashed his Lotus 18, but the Team Lotus mechanics managed to get the car back into decent working order for the race and, impressively, the young Scot made amends for his mistake by finishing in third position. It was the first time that Clark had visited the rostrum. This is an attractive little model which even comes with a miniature Jim Clark in the cockpit, and it will make a great addition to any collection, or could even be used as a stand alone desk model.

NationalKit CarMotor ShowThe annual Kit Car Motor Show at Stoneleigh was a fantastic event held over the May Bank holiday. Rob Hawkins reports on the cars, the people and the highlights.

Stoneleigh has undoubtedly become the kit car show that mustn’t be missed. Manufacturers often unveil

new cars at this show and this year’s event didn’t disappoint. The mainstream media may be full of talk of recession and a lack of growth, but looking around the club fields and halls at Stoneleigh over the May Bank Holiday weekend of the 5th and 6th, you wouldn’t think the economy is in a slump.The club field was packed on both days with just about every variety of kit car. The popular Cobras and Seven styled kit cars dominated many areas, with long

established GT 40 replicas, Speedsters and Ultimas being equally hard to miss. Many kit cars appear to be as strong as ever, even if we thought their days were over. The Minari for instance, was once set to become a major sports car and kit car, based on FWD Alfa donor components. It’s still being supported on a small scale, but judging by the club area, there are plenty of fans of this agile two seater sports car.

Covins & More!The same could be said of old timers, such as the Covin. This Porshce 911 replica was once the answer to many people’s dreams who couldn’t afford the real thing. However, when the price of genuine 911s started to drop to the same level as the cost of building a Covin, many expected these kit cars to disappear from the scene. Looking at the turnout of Covins, this isn’t exactly true.

There are some long term sectors of the kit car market that are now supported by the classic car industry, which is currently booming once more. Beetle based Speedster replicas and beach buggies are surely set to bridge the gap between kit car and classic car. Whilst these designs are based on cars that we associate with classics, it may be harder for the likes of Midas and Quantum’s saloon and two seater sports cars to be so easily recognised within the classic car market. However, there were plenty of these cars to see at Stoneleigh and whilst the days of mass manufacturing these kit cars are over, there’s clearly plenty of support for keeping them alive.

Bright OutlookThere was so much to see at this year’s Kit Car Motor Show at Stoneleigh that you needed two days to fully look at everything that was on display. I spent the entire two days talking to just about every exhibitor at the show, but still didn’t manage to speak to everyone. If Stoneleigh is a reflection of the state of the kit car industry, then sales may not be as high as they have been, but people are still interested and there are plenty of kit cars on the road and available to build. Don’t miss next year’s show and if you can’t wait that long, Newark is only a few days away on the 15th and 16th of June

RM Auctions returned in style to Villa Erba in Italy on May 25, generating more than €27 million at its exclusive sale during the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este weekend on Lake Como. As you might expect, Italian exotica dominated the event and provided more than a few highlights. For example, the incredible 1953 Ferrari 340/375 MM Pinin Farina Berlinetta ‘Competizione’ realised €9,856,000, smashing the previous auction record for the model and establishing a new world record for a closed ‘Berlinetta’ Ferrari sold at auction. At a packed venue in the grounds of the historic Villa Erba, over 1,000 people witnessed the star Ferrari lot lead the way in a sale which saw five cars exceed the €1,000,000 mark and 11 lots exceed their pre-sale estimates. Spirited bidding was seen in the room and on the phones and internet, with international interest being received from across 30 countries.Ferrari was once again the most popular marque with the bidders. Curiously titled ‘BMC Quality,’ this DVD features four individual films which look at some of the wonderful cars produced by the once huge British Motor Corporation. The selection of films has been sourced from the archives of the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust and each one has been re-mastered for the DVD.The first movie is one called ‘The British Motor Car’ and was originally released in 1963. It gives a historic overview of the creation of the British Motor Corporation in 1952 and is illustrated by rare historical footage. It is narrated by no less than Lord Nuffield himself and it is still a very watchable film, despite the passage of time. The production used films sourced from the numerous BMC factories which today form the core of the unique BMIHT film archive.Next up is ‘Winning Ways’ from 1962, which covers BMC’s exploits in motor sport, ranging from Formula Junior and saloon cars to hill climbs and international rallying; including scenes at the Cooper Works and the BMC Competitions Department.It is followed by ‘For the Markets of the World,’ a 1961 production. It details how during its heyday, BMC was Britain’s leading exporter of cars, as illustrated by the variety of marques and models, including MG and Austin Healey, being loaded on board ship for sale all over the world. A great reminder of when us Brits still had a motor industry!The final sequence is ‘BMC Quality’ from 1962, and it is this film that the DVD takes its title

It makes for fascinating viewing, and the DVD as a whole will be entertaining to British car fans and nostalgia buffs in general.
