36 CLASSICAL PLAY-ALONG PIECESFOR PRIMARY & MIDDLE SCHOOL KIDS

WELCOME!This pack contains 36 percussion pieces you can play-along to classical music. The pieces are for everyday objects such as cups, buckets, paper plates, sticks, pens and tables as well as body percussion. They break down into three levels of difficulty (beginner, intermediate and advanced).

ABOUT THE PACK

This pack does not contain any audio tracks for the play-along pieces however you can easily find them for free on YouTube or purchase them through your favourite music service. Alternatively, simply play along to our performance videos and you can listen to the music that way.

SONGS

Each play-along comes with two videos: a performance and a tutorial. You can use these to teach yourself the patterns or to teach your students directly. At the bottom of each page you will see two video links that look like this:

Each piece comes with a suggested structure. You can follow this or feel free to create your own. A great extension activity is to ask your students to create their own patterns along to a piece of music.

STRUCTURE

EQUIPMENTWe use sturdy plastic tumblers rather than the disposable kind. All of the cups pieces can be played either on a table or on the floor. A number of the pieces can be played with partners or in a circle. If you are playing in pairs, students should simply pass the cup across to their neighbour when needed. If playing in a circle (this can either be the whole class or smaller groups), students should pass the cup to their right when needed.

CUPS

If you have a class set of drumsticks, great! If not, feel free to use rhythm sticks, pieces of dowel, chopsticks or rolled up magazines.

DRUMSTICKS

We use sturdy paper or plastic plates. If you are finding your plates aren’t strong enough, simply tape two plates together - that is what we did when filming these videos and it worked a treat!

PAPER PLATES

We use sturdy painters buckets (15L or 20L buckets produce a great sound). They can be quite expensive when new so we recommend buying them second hand from somewhere like Facebook Marketplace. You can even ask your local bakery, hardware store or plasterer to donate some. If you don’t have buckets, alternatives include:• plastic tubs• washing baskets• tupperware containersSee below for drumstick alternatives.

BUCKETS

We use regular sharpies for pen drumming but most pens will work fine. If you have any issues with the lids coming off, simply tape or glue them shut.
