Classification of Life

Part 2: The Kingdoms

Page 2: Classification of Life Part 2: The Kingdoms · More Specific Classification –Kingdoms are the second largest group of living things after Domains –Kingdoms group organisms according

More Specific Classification – Kingdoms are the second largest

group of living things after Domains

– Kingdoms group organisms according to a more specific set of rules.

– There are 6 Kingdoms • Archaeabacteria

• Eubacteria

• Protists

• Fungi

• Plants

• Animal

Domain Archea is divided into…

• Kingdom Archeabacteria

Page 4: Classification of Life Part 2: The Kingdoms · More Specific Classification –Kingdoms are the second largest group of living things after Domains –Kingdoms group organisms according

Kingdom Archeabacteria

– Only kingdom in Domain Archea.

Same characteristics as domain

archea.

– Prokaryotic

– Unicellular

– Reproduce Asexually

– Are not mobile (cannot move)

– Consumers (usually

decomposers specifically)

– Most importantly, they can live in

extreme places (extremophiles)

Domain Bacteria is divided into…

• Kingdom Eubacteria

Page 6: Classification of Life Part 2: The Kingdoms · More Specific Classification –Kingdoms are the second largest group of living things after Domains –Kingdoms group organisms according

Kingdom Eubacteria

– Only kingdom in Domain Bacteria. Same characteristics as domain bacteria.

– Unicellular

– Prokaryotic

– Reproduce Asexually

– Can be shaped like rods, spheres or spirals

– Most Eubacteria are helpful but some cause infection

Streptococci- bacteria that

gives you strep throat

Domain Eukarya is divided into…

• Kingdom Protists

• Kingdom Fungi

• Kingdom Plants

• Kingdom Animals

Page 8: Classification of Life Part 2: The Kingdoms · More Specific Classification –Kingdoms are the second largest group of living things after Domains –Kingdoms group organisms according

Kingdom Protist – Cells contain a nucleus

– Called the “leftovers kingdom”

because individuals are so different

from one another within the kingdom

– Protists are NOT animals, plants,

bacteria or fungi

– Can be unicellular and multi-cellular

– Reproduce asexually

– Mostly aquatic

Algae

Diatoms

Protozoa

Page 9: Classification of Life Part 2: The Kingdoms · More Specific Classification –Kingdoms are the second largest group of living things after Domains –Kingdoms group organisms according

Kingdom Fungi – Cells contain a nucleus

– Most fungi are multicellular except for yeast which is unicellular

– Reproduce Sexually or Asexually

– Include yeasts, mushrooms and molds

– Found mostly on land

– Most fungi are decomposers (breakdown dead material)

– Fungi are different from plants in that fungi CANNOT make their own food

Slime Mold

Mushrooms

Lichens

Kingdom Plant – Cells contain a nucleus

– Multi-cellular

– Reproduce sexually

– Most are autotrophic while

others can also be

heterotrophic (i.e. Venus fly

traps)

– Capable of photosynthesis

(take sunlight and CO2 to

make sugar)

Sea Kelp

Raspberry Vines

Grasses

Trees

Venus Fly Trap

(Carnivorous Plant)

Kingdom Animal

– Cells contain a nucleus

– Multi-cellular

– Reproduce sexually

– Heterotrophic

– Includes

• Insects

• Fish

• Birds

• Reptiles

• Amphibians

• Mammals (humans are mammals)

Exit Slip

• What are some of the characteristics that

divide organisms in Domain Eukarya into

four kingdoms?

• Which is a larger group - Domain Eukarya

or Kingdom Animal? Why?
