Notice is given in terms of Regulation 54 of the Environmental Impact Regulations, published in GovernmentNotice R543 in Government Gazette No. 33306 of 18 June 2010, under Section 24(5) of the NationalEnvironmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No.107 of 1998), as amended, that the Department of EnvironmentalAffairs has accepted the plan of Study for EIA and The MSA Group (MSA) has proceeded with the impactassessment phase of the Waste Management License required for the proposed expansion of the MeyertonWWTW situated on Portion 64 of the Farm Kookfontein 545 in Meyerton.
The expansion will be undertaken in two phases of 15 ML/day. Phase 1 entails the construction of theconstruction of the head of works, pump station, biological treatment reactor, waste activated sludge pumpstation, sludge drying beds, irrigation pump station secondary sedimentation tanks, sludge recycling pump station,chlorination system and chlorination contact tank. The second 15 ML/d will entail the construction of two primarysedimentation tanks and an additional secondary sedimentation tank to accommodate greater flow to the works.The mixers and aerators on the bioreactor will be replaced with units of higher capacity.The activities associated with the proposed expansion are listed under Category A and B of the GovernmentNotice No. 718 of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (59/2008) published on 03 July 2009 andwill require a Waste Management License. The application for the Waste Management License will require theScoping and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to be undertaken as stipulated on the above GovernmentNotice. The EIA was conducted in accordance with Sections 24 and 24(D) of the National EnvironmentalManagement Act (Act No 107 of 1998) (NEMA), as read with Government Notices R 543 and R545 as publishedin Government Gazette No 33306 of 18 June 2010.
The listed waste activities as identified under Government Notice No. 718 of the National EnvironmentalManagement: Waste Act (59/2008) published on 03 July 2009 are shown below:
• Category A - Activity no. 2: The storage including the temporary storage of hazardous waste at a facility thathas a capacity to in excess 35m3 of hazardous waste at any one time excluding the storage of hazardouswaste in lagoons.
• Category A - Activity 19: Expansion of facilities of or changes to existing facilities for any process or activity,which requires an amendment of an existing permit or license or a new permit or license in terms legislationgoverning the release of pollution, effluent or waste.
• Category A- Activity 18: The construction of facilities for activities listed in Category A of this Schedule(not in isolation to the associated activity)
• Category B - Activity 7: The treatment of effluent, wastewater or sewage with an annual throughput capacity of15000 cubic metres or more.
