OUR GREYHOUND BUS SERVICE IS IN JEOPARDY Greyhound has applied to the BC Passenger Transportation Board to amend its Passenger Transportation License #70414 to reduce minimum route frequencies to TWO per week in each direction and ELIMINATE CERTAIN ROUTE POINTS as well on several of its routes. The one that will affect our citizens is the Vancouver-Prince George-Vancouver route. Route point elimination on this run means there would NO longer be bus service to McLeese Lake, Spences Bridge, Shaw Springs, Lytton, Spuzzum, Yale, Laidlaw, Bridal Falls, Agassiz and BOSTON BAR. ‘WAITING FOR THE SPIRIT TRAIN’ ~ by Tom Durrie “I never believed there was such a thing as ghosts or spirits that walked. It was all baloney as far as I’m concerned,” said a worker who was part of a Pre-Construction crew working in the old CN Station in Boston Bar. “But I believe now!” he added. On the second floor of the station, the men were going about their work. They were surprised to catch in their peripheral vision, shadows flickering on the wall brightly lit up by the tower worklights they had set up. At first it seemed as though the shadows were caused by one of them walking in front of the lights. However it didn’t take long to determine that there was no one working between the light and the wall. They figured this was just something ordinary, perhaps dust, causing this to happen. One of the workers said it was like standing in the sun and looking into the shade, you could barely make out some subtle shadows—or something! Whatever it was, they all saw it. A bit later, the foreman of the crew had left the building leaving the other men to finish up when one of them called out, “Hey, Bill (not his real name), stop it. That’s not funny.” He had heard what he thought was Bill in the next room making a dull whistle sound like wind blowing through trees on a cold day. The only thing was that it was 30 plus degrees out and a calm sunny day--and Bill was actually outside at the time. Bill heard him yelling from outside and asked from the ground, “What’s going on up there?” And that’s when the strong mature workmen broke out in terror and came bolting down the stairs screaming like little school girls. “I went back into the building to see what was going on,” Bill recalled, “And as I walked in, the hair on my arms stood up and I heard the whistling. I left the building without looking back. It was the most chilling experience I’ve ever had, and I was glad to get out of there. Yes, now I believe in ghosts!” As Bill said later, “It was like some kind of spirit reaching out. People come and go and I guess some get stuck in between worlds.” Could it be the train worker who was crushed between two cars near that spot? Or could it be something to do with the 1962 newspaper found in the wall with the headline: “Dad dies leaving mother with children”? How many of us scoff at the idea of ghosts or the spirits of people who have somehow become “stuck” in another dimension? Whatever happens as work on the restoration of the old CN station proceeds, mysterious sights and experiences like these may make us have second thoughts about our doubts and disbeliefs. The CN Station was built in 1914. How many spirits are still dwelling there, waiting for the next train to arrive and take them to their destination?
LANDFILL SOCIETY MEETS WITH THE COMMUNITY September 28th, 2017
Approximately 70 residents were in attendance following a recent event at the landfill, when an attempt was made to usurp the management powers of the Landfill Society and place the landfill under complete control of the Fraser Valley Regional District. No FVRD representatives were present at the meeting nor was Acting Electoral Area A
Director Robert Dufresne, to offer any comments at this time.
A motion was put forward to tell the FRVD that the community intends to continue operating the landfill and that the Landfill Society is prepared to fulfill all necessary regulations including recycling. “The community plan is more cost effective and the motion would include taking $200,000 out of reserve funds and purchasing a good used loader which would give us 10 years life with just light maintenance.” said Lloyd Forman. “The cost is less that 50% of using a contract loader. The Community wants to lead the process of the purchase and the hiring of maintenance because our area residents have a wealth of heavy equipment experience. We believe this will avoid expensive handling that
the regional district has provided.” The motion was carried by an almost unanimous vote, with only three opposed.
It is anticipated that members of the FVRD and our acting director will meet with members of our community in the
very near future to re-evaluate the present management and control as well as the future plans for our landfill.

AN UPDATE ON OUR AREA A DIRECTOR,
NEIGHBOUR AND FRIEND, TERRY RAYMOND.
I was able to catch up with Terry recently and he told me he is feeling much better but is still having some problems with speech and balance due to the inner ear damage from the concussion suffered in his MVA last November, 2016.
On a positive note, Terry is able to walk 10 to 12 blocks a day now using a cane for balance. At his physio’s suggestion he plans to get walking sticks to improve his balance and confidence. Terry has been cleared to start driving short distances during daylight hours. He praised his sister who has been caring for him in Merritt. “She’s been fantastic” he said.
Terry misses his Boston Bar friends as much as we all miss him so he’s hoping to be able to re-turn home to stay very soon. Terry has a ways to go yet before he can manage on his own. Although his other injuries have healed well, the post concussion syndrome can be difficult as the recovery takes time and patience. Get well SOON Terry!

It is an honour to have been chosen as the Principal for Boston Bar Elementary Secondary School. My passion for education and supporting the success of all students has been shaped over the past 24 years as a math, science, food and nutrition, clothing and textiles, PE and virtual classrooms teacher and as a figure skating and volley ball coach to children of all ages. I obtained my Masters in Education and Certificate in School Management and Leadership at the University of Victoria in 2007 and have spent many years gaining leadership experience to prepare me for this new position. As a parent to an 18 year old son and a 14 year old daughter, I recognize the importance of a strong home-school connection. Parents are every child’s first teacher and working together we can make sure each child’s social, emotional and academic needs are met.
BBESS has a very strong staff and together we will ensure that all children in our community receive a quality education within a safe, respectful environment. Each month, we will focus on social responsibility goals and academic success. Respect and kindness has been the focus for September and many students have been awarded courage cards for their excellent behaviour within our school environment. Our academic stars of the month will be displayed in the front entrance of the school for all to see as well as celebrated at the school-wide assembly every four to six weeks. I am already so proud of all of our
students and look forward to sharing in their success for many years to come!

The team building trip to Camp Squeah on Monday, September 18th, was a great success. Students K-12 spent time practicing gardening, making freezer jam, hiking, rock wall climbing, low rope practice, archery, orienteering and canoeing. The day ended with a swim in the rain and time in the playground. Fun was had by all! We look forward to our next school trip.

But beware, with Halloween fast approaching the safety of your children should be foremost. Keep these useful safety tips in mind before heading out for your Halloween festivities. Have fun but keep safe! AROUND THE HOUSE Be sure to keep the path leading up to your door free of obstacles for the little ones, especially those with masks and limited vision. Keep pets indoors on Halloween to protect them from hazards and to protect 'trick or treaters'. Before you light those candles in your pumpkin, consider using safety glow sticks. Nothing says creepy like a glowing jack-o-lantern. COSTUMES It is important to remember that when helping a child pick out a costume or when choosing one for the grownups, safety should be top of mind.
• Wear a light-coloured or bright costume, reflective tape or arm bands to heighten visibility.
• Wear a costume that is properly fitted to reduce the chance of tripping on it.
• Select a costume that is constructed from flame-retardant materials.
• Make sure your vision is not restricted. Consider completing your costume with make-up rather than masks. Masks may
require that the eye-holes be cut larger for the sake of good peripheral vision.
• Shoes should fit properly even if they do not go well with a costume.
• If a child's costume requires the use of props, such as a flexible-plastic sword, make sure the sharp tip is cut or filed round.
• Glow sticks are also an excellent method to increase a child's visibility. You might want to consider creating a fun necklace
with string to ensure they will want to wear as part of their costumes.
• Accessorize with a flashlight. "Fake": Swords, knives and guns part of your costume? Make sure they look fake but please
remember, some people still may not be able to tell the difference. TALK ABOUT BEING 'STREET SMART' BEFORE YOUR CHILDREN GO OUT. BEFORE THE KIDS HIT THE STREETS, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT PARENTS BE AWARE OF THE ROUTE THAT THEIR CHILDREN PLAN TO FOLLOW.
• If you are unable to take them out yourself, consider asking another parent, an older sibling or babysitter to do the honours
for you.
• Ensuring your child is wearing a watch also allows you to establish an agreed upon curfew.
• Teach your children to recognize the places along his/her route where they can obtain help: Police Station, Fire Station or
any other well indicated public place.
• Stay on the sidewalks (If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left-hand side of the street facing traffic).
• Visit houses on one side of the street at a time and cross the street only when safe to do so.
• Stop and check for cars before crossing the street.
• Discuss with your children what they should do to call home in case of emergency.
• Safety in numbers: Walk in groups and stay together. Stay on the outside - NEVER ENTER A HOUSE. Only accept treats
at the front door. MAKE YOUR 'TRICK OR TREATING' FUN AND SAFE Bring a flashlight. Walk instead of running. Do not cut across lawns or take short-cuts. Take masks off when walking from one house to the next. Do not go inside houses and do not get into vehicles. Only visit houses that are lit. Stay away from animals
you’re not familiar with; and remember vandalism is not just a 'trick' - it is against the law and has consequences!

This service is available to ANYONE needing a ride. The amount of subsidy available is determined by an individual’s needs and financial circumstances
(donations are gratefully accepted. ) If you require transportation to medical appointments outside of our immediate area, you must first become a Care Transit client by contacting the Hope Care Transit Office: 604-869-3396 . Rides to medical appointments in the lower mainland are then arranged for you through the Hope Care Transit Office. (Client Referral Forms are also available for our community’s Better at Home clients. Contact Dawn at 604-869-1831.) Referrals for anyone can be obtained from the health care staff at the Anderson Creek Clinic on Wednesdays, at 867-9380. Care Transit is a Non-Profit Service powered by caring volunteers! MANY THANKS to our community members for all cash and food donations and to our friends at BUY-LOW FOODS and SAVE-ON FOODS for their frequent donations to our Food Bank.
ANYONE CAN RIDE THE SHUTTLE which goes to Hope and to Chilliwack now twice a month. Hope return is $20.
Chilliwack return is $30. You must reserve your seat by calling 604-869-1831 on or before Wednes-
day. Non-seniors can purchase tickets at Canyon Lanes. (Cash only please).
This is a door to door ride so an address or pickup location must be provided.
Seniors 55+ yrs. may qualify for subsidized fare. See below**.
As well as helping seniors stay in their homes longer, we provide a shuttle service to Hope and Chilliwack, for shopping and appointments and also transportation on Wednesdays to Anderson Creek Medical Clinic. Subsidy for this transportation service is dependent upon a senior’s verified income level. Often this subsidy is 70% and as much as 100% for qualify-ing seniors. **IF YOU ARE A SENIOR 55+ and are having difficulty with light housekeeping, yard work, minor household mainte-nance and repairs and/or if you are in need of transportation to shops or appointments, please call 869-1831,

IF YOU REQUIRE THE SERVICES OF THE FOOD BANK and are not already registered with us, you can pick up an application at Canyon Lanes, Family Place or the Post Office.
When applying you need to show proof of residence in our area and proof of all the people living in your home.
Please hand in your application on the Friday before Food Bank Day. The Next Food Bank Day is Thursday, October 19th. You need to pick up your hamper between 1 & 3 pm or you could miss out. Canyon Lanes staff cannot be responsible for getting your hamper for you after Food Bank hours. Access to products on the Choices Table is ONLY available from 1 to 3 pm. Wednesday’s Community Lunch Program is sponsored by the BB-NB Enhancement Society.
A nutritious meal is served from 12 pm—1 pm. (Monthly Menu is on the Update Calendar.)
Everyone is Welcome. You are also invited to stay from 1 pm—2 pm to play card games and socialize.
A $2 MINIMUM DONATION is needed in order to continue our lunch program.
Perinatal specialist visit is Mon., October 2nd and Dental Hygienist will visit Monday, October 23rd
Family Place will be hosting an ACE Presentation on Tuesday, October 3rd and Monday, October 16th from 10:00 am -2:00 pm. We will have onsite child care as well as lunch and drinks. Adverse Childhood Experiences is a general questionnaire directed towards parents and their childhoods. Research has proven that negative childhood experiences are causing long term health problems. We would like to take this opportunity to learn more about ACE and how we can improve the quality of our own children's childhood experiences. Please feel free to join us. Because preparations are done well ahead of December’s Hamper Day, time is needed to quantify
the required food and take advantage of any sales! We need TIME to shop!
If you are in NEED of a December hamper, NEW RECIPIENTS must apply on or before
November 16th (Food Bank Thursday). If you’re already registered with our food bank
you do not need to re-apply to receive a December Hamper. Contact Morris if you have any questions.
