When Randy Turner fi nds a new woodworking project, it usually is not long before he has the skill down. His latest craft is segmented wooden bowls; he started making them in 2019 and has made over 60 so far; no two of them ever the same.

Turner refi nished furniture for over 20 years through the 1990s and the early 2000s. After getting a heart valve replaced in 2010, he closed up shop and went to work for Bayer Interior Woods in Sauk Centre for a year and a half

“I was fi nishing commercial cabinets and commercial millwork,” Turner said. “We did multi-million-dollar jobs like offi ce buildings, a lot of hospitals and a few sports stadiums. They do work all over the country; I worked for them for about fi ve years, and then I retired when I turned 65.”

Even in retirement, Turner continued woodworking projects such as canoes and twig furniture. In 2019, he fi gured he would try his hand at making segmented wooden bowls, purchasing a woodworking lathe for his

home shop so he could turn and smooth them out more effi ciently.

“I normally look at something and decide, ‘I think I can do that,’” Turner said. “I went through phases; once you get the things fi gured out, it doesn’t take that much to do it. My shop isn’t real big, so I don’t have a lot of room for big projects unless it’s warmer out.”

Turner makes his bowls from all kinds of wood, including oak, maple, walnut and ash. While some woods, particularly walnut and maple, can be costly at lumberyards, Turner often sources his wood. His walnut wood came from some trees cut down in the yard of his sister-in-law in Iowa, and a lot of his maple was left over from Wilkie Sanderson who would sometimes let employees take the drop-off pieces from cut lumber. He also gets wood from a friend of his in the Long Prairie area; his friend also processes logs Turner brings in.

To make a bowl, Turner begins by cutting the individual segments, or blanks, for the bowl and puts them together into rings. Turner makes each ring out of 12 segments before running them through a thickness planer and stacking them on top of a base, gluing them together into a rough bowl shape.

“If I want a straight-sided bowl, then I cut all the rings so they’re the

same diameter,” Turner said. “If I want a tapered bowl, then I cut them different; I normally cut my blanks for each ring about an eighth-inch shorter or longer than the one above or below it. The diameter of the bowl is dictated by how wide you cut your blanks.”

The longest part of the bowl-making process is the preparation work, cutting and gluing all the pieces, but once the rough bowl is on the lathe, it only takes about a half-hour to smooth it out.

Turner never makes bowls the same way twice, experimenting with all kinds of structures and patterns. He never puts any of his plans down on paper.

“For one, I fi nger-jointed everything,” Turner said. “I did it twice because it had gaps I didn’t like the fi rst time, so I had to make a jig so I could re-cut them at an angle so they would fi t together the way they were supposed to.”

Turner estimates he has made upward of 60 bowls since he started making them last year. When he started running out of space to store them, he took some to Merchants on Main in Sauk Centre where they are currently available.
