Adding texture and cutouts with slabs
Stages of Clay
Making meaning
The BAG form
Can you create a believable bag out of clay?
What can you show with light and shadow (pos/neg space)?
How will you show a consistent message around all 4 sides?
Luminary examples - cutouts

Design• Choose a theme for the whole piece (unity)
• Be careful about doing anything close to edges – save a 1/2” margin on all sides
• Remember you cannot have interior shapes (like a donut hole) because they will fall out
HOMEWORK:• 4 thumbnails sketches -then choose best to cut templates
SlabsSlabs are sheets of clay that are flattened by hand or rolled out with a rolling pin

Stages of Clay1. SLIP – clay mud2. PLASTIC – workable, useable clay3. LEATHERHARD – slightly hard, firm enough to
build with, but will crack when bent4. DRY LEATHERHARD – dryer still and rigid; will
break when bent5. GREENWARE – bone dry, room temperature, will
snap when bent6. BISQUEWARE – after firing the first time
Adding Textures and Cutouts

•Be sure to plan for cutouts and 5 or more textures that go with your theme
•Keep it simple and not too large or the side may collapse
•Make your slabs first then cut & add texture before building
Making MeaningThink of subjects you love that can be shown in
parts
Think of the light effects or a day vs. night theme •Cityscape
•Ocean/beach•seasons
*We do the same, but with paper bag dimensions
