GRIFFIN-SPALDING LITERACY COMMISSION The Griffin-Spalding Literacy Commission held its

annual Great Bulldawg Hunt in August. The community-wide event drew a massive crowd celebrating the literacy efforts of CLCP and Adult Education. The event was the culmination of a summer of grant writing, fundraising and media awareness for literacy.

CLCP Board members prepare for the Great Bulldawg Hunt

As Fall approaches, the CLCP will focus on computer testing and expanding classes at its correctional class sites. October will feature weekly radio talk shows on health literacy topics concerning cancer. October is Cancer Awareness Month. Broadcasts will include physicians who are CLCP Board Members. Terri Huddleston Executive Director

ADULT LITERACY BARROW

The Winder-Barrow Coalition for Adult and Continuing Education Board of Directors has officially changed their name to Adult Literacy Barrow, Inc. The reason for the change was to bring about a name that everyone in Barrow County could associate with and remember. It also puts the Coalition in line with other CLCPs in the state.

Four computers were purchased by the CLCP to be used to transition the “paper to pencil” GED testing to computerized testing. It is the first time that GED computer testing has been available on the Lanier Technical College Winder Campus. The 20

th Annual

Literacy Ball held in January of this year, raised the funds to buy the computers installed in August. The first student to take the computer based GED test (pictured below) passed with flying colors.

Ron Saunders Executive Director

PICKENS COUNTY CLCP Because of sequestration and some other budget

cuts, Pickens Learning Center found itself short a nighttime instructor for 2013-14, leaving only one full-time instructor to attend to the educational needs of about 250 students. When Lead Instructor Amy Denney approached the Pickens CLCP about her dilemma, they were happy to help by hiring Cliff Brooks. Mr. Brooks brings a myriad of practical experience to the classroom, including authoring a book. His book, “The Draw of Broken Eyes & Whirling Metaphysics,” has been nominated for two Pushcarts, a Pulitzer in Poetry and Georgia Author of the Year. He passes along his love of reading to his students.

CHATTOOGA COUNTY LITERACY COUNCIL To celebrate National Adult Education and Family

Literacy Week, the Chattooga County Literacy Council presented a “goody basket” filled with snacks to Pat Money’s Adult Literacy Class. The basket was kept full throughout the week so each class could enjoy nutritious snacks during study. Ms. Money teaches 3 classes per day, at 9:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 pm. The CLCP offers childcare for parents who need to begin their classes or just have a section or two to finish up their test by the end of the year. Rose Kohler Executive Director

DEKALB COUNTY COUNCIL ON LITERACY The DeKalb Council on Literacy has a strong

focus on training and equipping community based organizations (cbos) that offer Adult Education classes in the Metro-Atlanta area. The support is provided through A-Z Training Classes offering information on the structure and resources used in Adult Education programs. Over the past 5 years more than 50 organizations have participated in the A-Z program.

In preparation for the new standardized GED test to be implemented in January 2014, the CLCP plans to facilitate a training series for cbos to ensure teaching strategies prepare students for the new test. A session will take place in November to be followed by a second session in January. Latanya Overby Board Member

GAINESVILLE-HALL COUNTY ALLIANCE FOR LITERACY

Over the summer the Hall Adult Learning Center entered into a partnership with Georgia Mountain Regional Commission Workforce Development. The Commission is providing their testing bus to the center each Wednesday.

The bus provides additional class and testing

space. The wait time for students to take an assessment and enter the program has been reduced.

On August 30th the 2013 GED Graduation was

held at Free Chapel Church where 299 Hall County students received their GED diplomas.

On October 25-26 the Alliance will host their 6th

annual 24-hour Read-A-Thon, in conjunction with USA Weekend Make a Difference Day. Dorothy Shinafelt Executive Director

FANNIN COUNTY FLAG GED students in Fannin had the opportunity to

attend a GED Math Boot Camp for an intense 3 week session. Several students have passed all sections of the test except math and this class was intended to help them accomplish that last hurdle to attaining their GED diploma.

LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OF TIFTON-TIFT COUNTY On August 24

th, Literacy Volunteers of Tifton-Tift

County hosted a Varsity Reunion Supper Dance to celebrate the iconic Tifton drive-in restaurant. Tickets to the retro supper dance at the Tifton Elks Club were $20. The price of admission included all the hamburgers, hotdogs and french fries attendees could eat.

Proceeds will benefit CLCP efforts for literacy

which include one-on-one tutoring, small classes, book collections for distribution and supporting the Moultrie Technical College Adult Education Program. Special thanks were due to the Elks Club and to Publix and Walmart for their help with food. Charles Posey Executive Director

NEWTON COUNTY READS Newton County READS (NCR) sponsored a book

sale at the Antiques & Stuff flea market. Over $100 worth of donated books were sold. Kohl’s donated $500 and Kohl’s employees participated in event. Antiques & Stuff donated the space for the day.

Donna Sneed, Kathy Fowler, Jeannie Hall

The CLCP has received donations this year from many sources including large corporations, a men’s church group and a college student fundraiser. This has enabled NCR to expand offerings while working with a volunteer staff. NCR opened a new class site and started offering and expanding ESL classes. This could not have been accomplished without dedicated volunteers and support from the community. Thanks go to the following: United Way, Dollar General, General Mills, Kohl’s, C. R. Bard Foundation, BJ’s Charitable Foundation, Bullritos, Tasty Treats, Pittman Construction, Oxford College Student Fundraiser and Allen Memorial United Methodist Church Men’s Group. Kathy Fowler Board Chair

BIBB COUNTY DREAM TEAM Horace Holmes, Jr., local photographer, minister,

highly respected member of the community and Bibb County CLCP board member, was one of 5 people chosen as a winner of the Barbara Bush Foundation’s “Devotedly Dad” letter contest. Below is an excerpt from an article in The Telegraph, written by Ed Grisamore.

“Horace Holmes sat down and wrote a letter to his grandson. It was the first letter he had ever written anyone. His only grandchild, R.J. Greene, has not seen the letter. It will be a gift from his “G. Pop” on his first birthday in 3 weeks. Of course, R.J. cannot read. His grandfather would not have been able to read it a few years ago. Although he suffered from a reading disorder, nobody outside his family and close circle of friends knew he was illiterate. After he learned to read, he wrote his first letter. It was straight from the heart. Dear R.J., Your Granddaddy has something very important to tell you -- your granddaddy did not really learn to read till he was 55 years old, even though I have a three-page resume. I (have) been on Air Force One. I have photographed great men and women. I have made Coca-Cola a lot of money when I worked for them. I am an internationally-known photographer and preacher and have a college degree, but I could not really read. You see, my dyslexia kept me from learning what you will learn as a four or five-year-old. That’s why I am writing this -- to tell you how important it is that you learn to read.” Horace ended the 793-word letter by telling R.J. the story of how he had enrolled at an Adult Education class at Central Georgia Technical College where Instructor, Phyllis Dorn, began working with him….A copy of the letter was sent to the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy and in June, Horace was notified his letter had been selected as one of the winners in the foundation’s “Devotedly Dad” letter contest…In June 2009, he was the commencement speaker when 44 graduates received their GED diplomas through CGTC’s Adult Education Program. “I loved writing the letter to my grandson, but the most powerful part to me will be reading it to him,” Horace said…”
