• Chemical– USDA APHIS will determine which

disinfectants are to be used– Inactivates a wide variety of

microorganisms – not all– Chemical disinfectant classes– Selection on characteristics, efficacy,

and hazards

• Aldehydes– Formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde– Toxic at high concentrations

• Alkali agents– Sodium/calcium hydroxide, sodium

carbonate, and calcium oxide• Biguanides

– Antiseptic (chlorhexidine)– Toxic to fish
