    Unit Summary

    This unit is about the standards of personal hygiene which are required whencleaning. As a cleaning operativeyou should always keep yourself and the areawhereyou are working clean and tidy. This unit is also about personal protectiveequipment(PPE). It is about how to select and use PPE according to the taskyouare carrying out.

    Performance Criteria

    1. keep your hair skin and nails clean and hygienic2. wear clean clothes3. follow your organisations procedures on what jewellery and accessories may be

    worn

    4. select appropriate PPE in line with manufacturers instructions and organisationalprocedures

    5. ensure the PPE you are using is clean and fit for useand changed whennecessary in line with organisational procedures

    6. use PPE in line with the health and safety requirements of the task andorganisational procedures

    7. deal with used PPE appropriately8. follow your organisations recommended procedures for washing your hands at all

    The customer service your organisation gives is affected by the way you do your job.Whatever job you are doing, customers expect you to do it properly. They alsoexpect you to consider their wishes and feelings while you are doing it.This Unit has been designed to cover how you do your job with the customer in mind.It is designed to help people understand the parts of their jobs that are mostimportant to Customer Service.

    Performance Criteria

    This unit has been imported from ICS (unit 5)

    There are rules in organisations which limit what you can and cannot do forcustomers. Some rules are set by your organisation and some are defined by lawand apply to everybodys jobs. Other rules are set by regulations which apply toparticular industries. You need to know your organisations rules and procedures andhow these limit what you can do for customers. You also need to be aware of thewider laws and regulations which are set outside of your organisation and how theyapply to your job.

    Unit summary

    This unit is about working with others with the same occupation as yourself in yourorganisation.It is about giving help to others when they need it and respondingappropriately when disagreements arise.

    Performance criteria

    1. Follow any procedures for entering and leaving the workplace and remain alert tosafety risks when doing so

    2. Make sure your behaviour and personal presentation convey to others a positiveimage of your organisation and/or workplace

    3. make sure you understand the requirements of the work schedule and what the

    team needs to do to complete the work

    Unit summary

    This unit is about working individually, without the presence of your supervisor orother team members in the same occupational area. This unit is also suitable for loneworkers.

    When working individuallyyou might have to deal withteam members from otheroccupational areas orthe general public by providing them with information, orinteracting with them in another way. In these situations it is important that you actappropriately to create a positive impression of your employer and/or workplace.

    1. Confirm contact arrangements with your organisation or an appropriate personand maintain agreed levels of contact when conducting your work

    3. Assess the risks present in the workplace and take appropriate action to reducethose that you can

    4. Within the limits of your responsibility control access to the workplace

    Unit Summary

    This unit is designed aboutcontributing to the protection of the environment. The

    candidate must take steps to minimise harm to the environment and comp lete tasksand activities on a way which causes as little damage or disturbance as possiblewhilst following organisational procedures.

    Performance criteria

    1. operate and look after equipment and materials so as to reduce environmentaldamage

    2. carry out work in a manner which minimises environmental damage3. make sure work is carried out in accordance with approved practices and

    procedures4. recognise any likely or actual environmental damage and take the appropriate

    action5. identify improvements to organisational procedures for environmental good

    practice and take the appropriate action6. dispose of waste in a way which minimises the risk tothe environment

    Unit summary

    This unit is about following manufacturers instructions and organisational proceduresfor the safe use and storage of equipment and cleaning agents. It is also aboutensuring that equipment is left in a conditionwhere it is ready to be used, makingappropriate selections of cleaning agents,using them correctly and disposing ofthemsafely.

    Performance Criteria

    1. select and wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)2. display any appropriate warning signs3. ensure the area is adequately ventilated for the equipment you are about to use

    4. check equipment is safe and free from faults when removing from storage5. report any faults with equipment to the appropriate person in line with your

    organisations procedures6. use equipment in line with manufacturers instructions and organisational

    procedure7. select appropriate cleaning agents for the area you are going to clean8. prepare and use cleaning agents in line with manufacturers instructions and

    C1 09 Deal with waste, recyclables, lost property and suspicious packageswhen cleaning

    Unit overview

    This unit is about ensuring that waste, recyclables and lost property are dealt with inan appropriate manner and in line with organisational procedures. It is also aboutdealing with packages that may be considered suspicious.

    Performance criteria

    1. Prepare yourself and your working area so that you can do the taskefficientlyand safely

    2. Make sure you wear the necessary personal protective equipment required byyour work instructions

    3. Identify different categories of waste and deal with them appropriately

    4. Check first with your supervisor, or follow standard instructions or procedures,before removing waste that you are unable to identify or that is hazardous

    5. Treat anything which may be of value to someone as lost property and take it tothe collection point

    6. leave suspicious packages where they are and report them immediately to theappropriate person in line with organisational procedures

    7. report /record items which have been found in line with organisationalprocedures

    8. Check that waste bags or receptacles are secure whenhandling

    9. Where waste is collected for transfer to a collection point, identify the waste thatneeds to be transferred

    10. ensure that the waste receptacle is cleaned and relined as necessary

    C1 10 Use electrical or battery powered cleaning equipment effectively andsafely

    Unit Summary

    This unit is about the safe and effective use of electrical or battery poweredequipment. This could be any type of electrical or battery powered equipmentincluding, suction cleaners, spray cleaners and rotary floor buffers,although this isnot an exhaustive list.

    In this context electrical equipment is defined as any equipment which plugs into themains and has a cord. Battery powered equipment does not have a cord.

    Performance criteria

    1. select and wear the appropriate PPE

    2. check that you have access to the equipment you require and perform a safetycheck

    3. ensure any appropriate safety/warning signs are displayed clearly4. ventilate the area if necessary5. adjust equipment appropriately for the requirements of the taskand in line with

    organisational and health and safety procedures6. check and prepare the surface for cleaning appropriately7. where appropriate ensure that the battery pack is charged in line with

    manufacturers instructions and organisational procedures8. where appropriate ensure that the cable of the electrical appliance is correctly

    positioned9. use the correct technique for the equipment concerned

    C1 11 Clean a variety of surfaces using correct methods

    Unit Summary

    This unit is about applying various cleaning methods to surfaces. It is designed forcleaning operatives undertaking basic cleaning tasks. It is suitable for cleaningfurniture, floors fixtures and fittings.

    NB: This unit is not suitable for cleaning washrooms

    Performance criteria

    1. select and wear the appropriate PPE for the task2. check that you have access to the equipment you require and that it is in safe

    working order3. ventilate the area as necessary

    4. select the appropriate colour-coded equipment5. ensure any appropriate safety/warning signs are displayed clearly6. check and prepare appropriately the surface for cleaning7. select an appropriate cleaning agents for the surface to be cleaned8. prepare any cleaning agents in line with manufacturers instructions and

    This unit is imported from the suite of Health and Safety stand alone units produced by ENTOand is equivalent to Unit HSS1

    This unit is for everyone at work (whether paid, unpaid, full or part -time). It is about having anappreciation of significant risks in your workplace, knowinghowto identify and deal with them.

    This unit is about the health and safety responsibilities for everyone in your workplace. Itdescribes the competences required to make sure that:

    your own actions do not create any health and safety hazards

    you do not ignore significantrisks in your workplace, and

    you take sensible action to put things right, including: reporting situations which pose adanger to people in the workplace and seeking advice

    Unit overview:

    This unit is about cleaning washrooms and involves following the procedures for entering the

    washroom, selecting equipment and preparing the cleaning agents you will use. It is alsoabout replacing supplies of consumables, such as toilet paper, and checking your work whenyou have finished.

    In order to reduce risks to personal health and safety when cleaning washrooms it isimportant to maintain high levels of personal hygiene. As you may clean washrooms in anenvironment where you conduct a variety of other cleaning tasks it is also important that, inorder to prevent cross-contamination, the correct colour-coded equipment is used.

    The term washroom covers all sanitary areas requiring this type of cleaning.

    Unit overview:

    This unit is about maintaining levels of cleanliness in environments where there is a high riskof infection or contamination; this risk may be two-fold:

    1. Risks to yourselfand othersthere may be a risk to yourself of becoming infected .

    2. Risks to the environment you may risk contaminatingthe environmentin which you areworking if you do not follow the correct workplace procedures.

    Both of these risks are dealt with across the two elements within this unit.

    To reduce both of these risks it is important to maintain high levels of personal hygiene and to

    adhere to procedures.According to the environment in which you are working there might bedifferent procedures: for example, for the use of personal protective equipment and forentering and leaving thehigh risk area.

    High risk in some work contexts can be defined as a controlled environment

    When working in confined spaces it is important to be vigilant against possible hazards andrisks that may arise during the work activity, taking precautions to prevent access by thepublic and other unauthorised personnel.

    To reduce risks to personal safety it is important that you wear the appropriate personalprotective equipment and that when working alone you maintain regular contact with acolleague and/or your workplace.

    Food preparation, service and retail areas pose a high risk to public health if not cleanedproperly. High standards of personal, including hand, hygiene should be observed andmaintained throughout the cleaning process. It is important to follow the cleaning specificationin the businessfood safety management procedures.

    This unit also covers the cleaning of in-place equipment and it is, therefore, important thatcorrect precautions are taken with regard to Personal Protective Equipment and the handlingand safe isolation of food production equipment.

    This unit consists of two elements:

    C2 11.1 Clean food areas according to businessfood safetymanagement procedures

    C2 11.2Complete cleaning of food areas

    Performancecriteria: -

    1. Obtain the cleaning specification in the businessfood safety management procedures atthe right time

    2. Remove all your personal items and store in an approved place and put on personalprotective equipment

    3. Ensure your level of personal hygiene meets the standard required by the businessfoodsafety management procedures and report health conditions such as skin disorders,open sores, diarrhoea etc. to the relevant person

    4. Move and protect items, including food, in the cleaning area in accordance with thecleaning specification

    5. Use the cleaning equipment that is suitable for the specific cleaning operation and checkthat it is safe before you use it

    6. Separate and clearly label faulty or damaged cleaning equipment and make the foodbusiness operator aware of this

    7. Prepare food production plant, equipment and materials for cleaning in-placeinaccordance with the cleaning specification

    8. Isolate food equipment power supplies whenever necessary

    9. Carry out the cleaning without damaging in-place plant and equipment

    10. Follow the manufacturers instructions and safe working practices when taking apart,handlingand re-assembling food production equipment
