OUR APPROACH

Driving performance Aviation is a complex, competitive and heavily regulated industry requiring improved operational performance from reduced operational costs and CAPEX investments. We bring an astute awareness of airport operators’ needs, meaning we will question assumptions and accepted ideas in the interest of driving innovation and improving best practice. We are more likely to design an optimised refurbishment with low life cycle costs than an over-engineered solution with high capital costs. We understand how to deliver improved long-term performance in this competitive industry.

Forming client partnerships We know what it takes to successfully work in integrated teams. We are highly collegial, collaborative and communicative. You will find us extremely approachable, completely engaged and fully committed. We bring no preconceptions, just agility of thought, and share this approach with many leading architects, developers and contractors with whom we regularly collaborate. Our goal is to create customer partnerships and build a profound understanding of our clients’ needs and vision.

* Results based on 4,523 client satisfaction surveyresponses from the period January - December 2014.

Holistic thinkingWe believe that multidisciplinary holistic teams provide the best results and this approach is ingrained in our way of working. Shared modelling tools and design languages are part of this, but so is the way we organise our teams and communicate with each other. Our track record in securing project gains through joined up thinking has won us recognition and the trust of our clients.

Sustainable liveable solutionsRamboll is committed to creating a sustainable future with solutions that allow people and nature to flourish. From transport projects in Nordhavn, Scandinavia’s largest city development whose vision is to become the sustainable city of the future, to the Environmental and Social Master Plan helping transform the city of Jeddah into a model city for social and environmental improvement. Human needs always constitute our starting point. We measure our success by how well residents and communities are served by what we have done, as well as our clients. We are proud to have attracted industry recognition for producing progressive solutions that deliver both commercial advantage and sustainable outcomes.

INNOVATION THAT DRIVES PERFORMANCE

Examples of innovation

TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTOur trademarked Laser Aided Modelling (LAM®) process was developed to provide accurate 3D geometry of the built environment for analysis, and for accurate representation within BIM. In 2015 we benchmarked the use of UAVs and modelling based on digital photogrammetry against traditional laser scanning and have put these highly cost effective techniques to use on our projects.

INNOVATION IN CONSTRUCTIONWe have long been involved in R&D and the technical development of Design for Manufacture and Assembly to deliver economic construction programmes. With employees seconded into contractors and organisations exploring DfMA we bring a profound understanding of the key design considerations and unrivalled knowledge of precast concrete products.

INNOVATION IN MAINTENANCEWe developed our own pavement management system ‘AirPave’, a web application providing an economic approach to monitoring all paved assets, predicting maintenance needs and enabling long term financial planning. AirPave currently manages 20 milion m2 of pavement.

Creating innovations that benefit clients and society as a whole, driving performance and long standing sustainable solutions.

ABU DHABI AIRPORT EXPANSIONAbu Dhabi International Airport experienced a 20% increase in passenger traffic in the first quarter of 2015 compared to 2014, with more than two million passengers a month during the busiest periods. During the airport’s major programme of expansion, Ramboll has been involved with several design projects aimed at rapidly providing additional capacity. The most recent project includes the taxiways pavement design, apron pavement marking, a relocation of the aircraft stands, and the airfield ground lighting design for the Midfield Airside Road Tunnel construction phase 2 that connects two existing terminals.

HEATHROW AIRPORTWe have been involved with multiple projects supporting Heathrow Airport. This includes the scheme design for Terminal 2B where we worked on the integration of the new light rail passenger transport system and new baggage handling networks into the design. We are also responsible for the award-winning M25 J12-15 widening and T5 spur road that completed 3 weeks early and was praised as an exemplary delivery at the Highways Agency Major Projects Conference keynote. We have also been involved in other projects at terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5.

12

WORLD CLASSPROJECTSOur knowledge of the aviation industry, together with our appreciation of commercial realities and whole life costs means we know how to ensure that what we design is what gets built.

Page 13: CLEAR THINKING IN AVIATION

GIBRALTAR AIRPORTGibraltar Airport has a reputation as one of the world’s most extreme airports given that its only runway cuts through the heart of the peninsula’s busiest road. This means cars and pedestrians are brought to a standstill several times a day. Ramboll designed a 2.3km dual carriageway road around the airfield involving the relocation of over 100 facilities. This enables traffic to flow freely, improves access to the city centre and increases safety on the runway.

AMERICAN AIRLINES AT LAXThe American Airlines Los Angeles airport station appointed Ramboll Environ to assist with air quality compliance. The project included the assessment of the site’s performance relating to its Title V permit requirements, and reporting of air emissions containing nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC). We audited VOC material usage in spray booths and abrasive blasting systems including the compliance status of each of the hundreds of substances used at the station. Compliance was achieved to South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Regional Clean Air Incentive Markets (RECLAIM) standards.

COPENHAGEN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTSince 1992 Ramboll has served as in-house consultant for all the airport’s maintenance, refurbishment and expansion needs. Our long term alliance with this operator has provided fruitful opportunities to collaborate in innovative approaches to airport maintenance and design. For example, we developed the industry-leading airport pavement management system ‘Airpave’ in partnership with Copenhagen airport.

WORLD CLASS PROJECTS

GATWICK NORTH TERMINAL REDEVELOPMENT Gatwick Airport is undergoing the biggest transformation in its history and we were appointed by Pascall + Watson architects to provide full multidisciplinary engineering consultancy services on the reconfiguration and refurbishment of the existing North Terminal building. One of the key features of the project was a proposed five storey extension to revolutionise the shopping and eating experience at the airport. We proposed a detailed phasing strategy to provide temporary access routes for arrivals during construction. Additionally we carried out an extensive feasibility and options study on the proposed relocation of the Level 20 check-in desk to Level 10, and created 3D BIM models to review potential clashes between new baggage routes and existing structures and services.

DUBROVNIK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT – TERMINAL & AIRSIDEWe are providing a comprehensive range of services across the project cycle for the expansion programme at Dubrovnik Airport to support the client’s decision-making and ensure that the project objectives are met. Our contract for consultancy work and contract management of the expansion programme at Dubrovnik Airport, involves a feasibility study including interface with key stakeholders, land purchase, relocation of equipment and construction preparation works, airside improvement works including a new fire fighting station and fuel farm, as well as extension of the terminal including air bridges, new administration, catering and cargo buildings. MAJOR SOUTH AMERICAN AIRPORTRamboll was an intrinsic part of a highly experienced team commissioned to design and engineer the expansion of a major International Airport in South America. We provided full multidisciplinary concept design including structural, services, façade, civil, fire, vertical transportation and acoustics engineering for the existing terminal, a new terminal building, a control tower and rescue station. Page 15: CLEAR THINKING IN AVIATION

SYDNEY AIRPORT AIRPAVE IMPLEMENTATIONSydney International Airport saved an estimated 30% on its yearly maintenance budget by implementing Airpave. Developed by Ramboll through collaboration with Copenhagen Airport, Airpave delivered a precise, cost-saving framework for managing Sydney’s 3km2 of paved assets. The management system analyses airfield pavement performance criteria in terms of frictional resistance, bearing capacity and surface condition. It then recommends an appropriate repair programme, ensuring maintenance work is never over-engineered.

15

PULKOVO AIRPORTThe ambitious expansion at Pulkovo set out to more than double passenger capacity. As lead design consultant our work spanned Terminal, Airside and Landside Facilities – all constructed in temperatures ranging from -36°c to 30°c. Our services included; structural, civil, MEP, façade, geotechnical, acoustics, fire and safety, sustainability, environmental and project management. Of note was the award winning long span roof where our optimised design resulted in a big reduction in steel tonnage and major cost savings, and the bespoke BREEAM assessment tool developed to ensure a sustainable design ethos was applied to the project.

BREEAM AIRPORT TERMINAL CODE DEVELOPMENTA series of workshops facilitated by Ramboll’s sustainability consultants refined collective thinking on sustainability in terminal design in collaboration with British Airports Authority (BAA) and BRE Global, the internationally recognised developer of sustainability standards. Following the workshops the scheme design for BAA’s Terminal T2A replacement at Heathrow was updated. A biomass boiler, photovoltaics and CHP had already been incorporated into the design of the new terminal, and the team added water efficient fittings and leak detection systems to improve T2A’s sustainability performance.
