Most people spend more time planning their vacation thanthey do planning their estate. The consequences can be alarming, because without a properly designed estate plan, assets accumulated over a lifetime may end up being dissipated in avoidable estate and income taxes, not to mention costly administrative expenses and distributions to heirs in ways that they never would have wanted.

If you’re facing payment of estate taxes at death, we can show you how to reduce your taxable estate without losing your assets. A Charitable Remainder Trust(CRT) is a proven way of guaranteeing yourself and yourspouse an income for life while benefiting any of your favorite charitable causes.

With the proper use of estate planning techniques, such as CRT, assets that might otherwise have gone to taxes can be rerouted to benefit family membersand charities. We can show you how you can make a major gift to Hippocrates Health Institute while retaining or increasing income from the assets you contribute.

To learn how you can keep more of your assets and reduce your tax liability, call Tom Straub today at 1.888.237.7211,ext. 217 or simply complete the attached form and mail to The Straub Group at the address listed.

In the last year of the first decade in the 21st century, we all are engaged in the process of recovery. Our lives as pure, complete, whole and happy infants have tumbled down the pathway of social norms, leaving us as lesser people. When luck and com-mon sense meet, we experience a revelation and recognize the aspects of ourselves that are not whole. From this point forward, people who cherish life can recover what they so sorely lack.

We always focus on the physical body and its multitude of functional parts when thinking about health. Well beyond that — and certainly far more important —are the emotions governing our life’s outcome. They are either feathers that encourage us to float freely with clear direction, or chisels that remove pieces of our complete being. These pinnacle aspects of the human experience have the powerful potential to create passionate lives contributing to the greater whole. Sadly, most of us turn our good fortune of positive opportunity into a sledgehammer stopping us in our tracks towards progress. In the later case, we symbolically become deterrents rather than creators of good fortune. What do we do when we find ourselves in a chronic pattern of sorrowful living? Do we try disassembling the parts blocking happiness and health, or do we inherit their greatness by the positive actions following thought? Remember, the positive is made of two lines — a horizontal and a vertical — while the negative has only one, making the positive twice as powerful.

In this world of discourse and drama, while it appears that the negative is winning, it is the positive that is most often sought after. Even those wallowing in a disastrous life aspire for something better: not only for the allure of balance, happiness and health, but the mathematical reality within the human experience. We are blessed here at Hippocrates to constantly connect with people reaching for a higher purpose. In this process, they often heal themselves of catastrophically measured disorders.

What is it that gives one person the ability to achieve resounding recovery while another seems to fall short? There is certainly a clear answer: it is the perception of capacity, or the view that they lack this virtue. Is there any problem that is insur-mountable? No. Time and time again we hear about health professionals taking away all hope from their patients. How dare one be so callous to another human being? Often with a grand education, some assume that they are somehow equipped to judge another’s potential. This is not only wrong but also unethical. Now is the time in the heathcare profession to reaffirm our humanity so that we can advance proven, positive guidance instead of abolishing hope for the future through disruptive criticism.

We are capable of anything we passionately desire. With an unwavering commit-ment to ourselves and the power of positive actions, we are unstoppable in the quest of purity and wholeness. Let us not allow others to squelch our instincts. By continu-ally refining ourselves, we advance the creation of a productive and glorious future. Have an exceptional New Year. We wish you a life full of health and happiness! We hope to see you soon at Hippocrates Health Institute.

Blessings,

Drs. Anna Maria and Brian Clement

This issue marks the 30th anniversary of Hippocrates Health Institute’s magazine! We’ve come a long way from the early days of our humble newsletter. Keep your eyes open as Healing Our World continues its journey ofimprovement and transformation.

The theme of this issue is Remarkable Recoveries. Over the years, we’ve witnessed our guests heal themselves and experience miraculous recoveries. As Francesca MacAaron so succinctly writes in her testimonial, “At Hippocrates, I learned that the greatest gift you can give another is to bear witness and walk side by side with them.” One of my favorite parts of working at Hippocrates is attending our guests’ gradua-tions on Fridays. They open up and share their tender souls through stories, laughter and tears. Bearing witness to their healing journeys and seeing the profound transformation they undergo is not only touching, but also inspiring.

True healing demands that we honestly look at ourselves, take full responsibility for our lives and release our negative patterns while embracing and implementing life-affirming ones. Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future, right? Interestingly, the etymology of the word sin has no moralistic connotations in either Biblical Hebrew or Greek; it simply means to err and miss the mark, respectively, and has nothing to do with evil or shame. With this understanding, we can act more compassionately towards ourselves and others as we shed obsolete, life-eroding habits to embrace and instill life-affirming choices.

Shedding our old skins can be frightening; however, we can learn from nature as we embark on this process. When a caterpillar has eaten enough, it finds a safe place to turn into a larva, becomes very still, molts its skin and builds a cocoon for itself to undergo its incredible metamorphosis. Through the process of histolysis, the caterpillar’s old body is dissolved by the same sorts of juices it used in its former life to digest food. However, not all the tissue is destroyed; some passes on to its new self. The histoblasts, also know as the imaginal bud, is a newly awakened collection of special formative cells that supervise the building of a new body from the soup which the caterpillar’s digestive juices made of the old larval body.

At Hippocrates, we believe everyone has an imaginal bud. Our DNA contains genes waiting to activate and transform us from our caterpillar selves into our butterfly selves. The catalysts required to manifest our best expression are “good thoughts, good words and good deeds,” as Zarathustra once said, as well as a healthy dosage of courage, commitment and consistency. Our caring and dedicated staff offer a loving environment while our campus and facilities are the perfect safe haven to be still, build your cocoon and awaken your imaginal bud to supervise your transformation.

May this coming year bring health, peace, abundance and joy to all. May all creatures, all living things, all beings, one and all, experience good fortune only. May none fall in harm’s way.

Keeping Organic Standards PureThe POP Campaign Faces CODEX Head-On

What is the answer to the Zen monk’s perplexing koan when it comes to CODEX and protecting our organic food standards? For the founders of the POP (Preserve Organic Power) Campaign Mikaële Holzer and Rudi Leonardi of Green Your SPIRIT and Brian Clement oh HHI, it was an event beyond rationality, an uncommon common-sense that spark popped out from our inner health-consciousness into an outer resounding voice.

The POP Campaign focuses on four main areas: to keep our voices and choices alive; to keep organic standards pure; to keep ourselves and others educated; and to take ap-propriate action. The POP Campaign kicked off with a huge buzz at the San Francisco Green Festival. First actions were recommendations for amendments to Senate Bill 510 which granted the FDA new powers in food safety. Hundreds of you called Senators asking them to support POP recommenda-tions; there were some significant victories and more action to take.

Right now it is critical to be educated about CODEX and make a difference as policy is formulated in FDA, Congres-sional and State hearings on organic food standards and safety. CODEX is scheduled to be fully implemented in Europe by December 31, 2009. We want to be certain that no bleed through happens in the US. There is a strong threat that protection of organic produce, nuts, fruits, herbs and seeds will give way to the larger agenda of “harmonizing” US food production with import and export agreements. Threats of irradiation and pasteurization still exist until the govern-ment clearly says “NO.” This is the goal of the POP Campaign. What we do now will determine our future.

Help us take action. To stay informed and support the POP Campaign, please visit www.popcampaign.org. For more information on Green Your SPIRIT, please visit www.GreenYourSpirit.com.

Dear Healing Our World, I would like to thank Dr. Brain Clem-

ent, Ronny Bagdadi and the whole team behind each issue for publishing such an amazing and informative magazine!

My household reads this maga-zine from cover to cover. I make sure I distribute a copy to every health food store and holistic center I visit and share copies with friends and clients. Your last issue, “The Health of Soil,” was price-less. I’ve been passionate about organic gardening for the past few years, and continue to learn so much from your ar-ticles. I was particularly impressed with the Steve Solomon interview on how the organic movement came about.

I was also fascinated by the interview of Jules Dervaes, and could not agree more with his statement regarding why we should grow our own food: “we have lost the capacity to stand on our own two feet. So growing food ourselves is a step up to freedom,” says Dervaes. Doing so would bring us back to a “normal” ex-istence. It’s such an essential part of life to regain control of our health and stop the corporations taking over all aspects of our lives.

In addition, I agree with Dr. Clement when he says that we need to begin ask-ing questions about the source of foods sold at farmer’s markets, health food stores and supermarkets. As we raise our awareness, we help raise others’ as well. Two thumbs up! Healing Our World is a truly inspirational magazine. Keep up the great work! Warm Regards,

Nancy Desjardins, RNCPHolistic Nutritionist

MattersClinical studies conducted at the Kirschgarten clinic in Basel, Switzerland, suggest that inef-ficient or interrupted sleep can lead to fibromy-algia, migraine headaches and low back pain. The Journal of Sleep Research hypothesizes that “pain patients have even more severe sleep disturbance than primary insomniacs since the pain factor adds to a process of chronic insom-nia.” Martin E. Kelemen of Royal-Pedic Mattress, and a recent Hippocrates guest and former mattress-maker of Hollywood stars like Rodney Dangerfield, says that sleeping on natural-fiber mattresses is healthier since one is not exposed to the perpetual outgassing of standard poly-urethane mattresses. Royal-Pedic mattresses reduce sleep problems while improving overall health due to its double heat-tempered, Swiss-designed inner spring core. If you don’t believe the results, just ask Sharon Stone! For several years, Hippocrates Health Institute has been lost in the woods find-ing a way to take effective action against our increasing vulnerability to the grow-ing Codex movement which threatens to severely impact peoples’ access to high quality food and natural supplements. This includes threats to the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 — enabling millions of Ameri-can to enjoy access to safe, effective and affordable dietary supplements without needing prescriptions or having nutrients restricted to negligible levels — and to the integrity of organic farming. Codex efforts have been underway to poten-tially make mandatory the radiation and addition of select pesticides to organic food under the guise of food safety. Ad-ditionally, severe regulations are being proposed that could drive the organic and non-organic small farmer out of business.

New AlliesWe are very pleased to report that we are well into

the process of forming an alliance with two people with an extraordinary and effective impact in fighting the forces threatening our most fundamental rights to live healthy lives. They are the most important lobbyists in the United States in the natural health field. Both are highly respected on both sides of the isle in Congress and have a deep commitment to this cause. We are proud to form an alliance with these two individuals.

Our RequestThis is entirely new and critical venture for Hip-

pocrates will impact all of us. We are privileged to

have identified these very talented and hard working individuals to carry the battle forward in Congress and beyond. While no one is getting rich with this work, it does take significant financial resources to make it a reality. We need your immediate financial support to make it happen over the next year. This is a major task and we need your help. Hippocrates is deeply grateful for whatever you can contribute. Please make out contribu-tions to Codex Fund c/o Hippocrates Health Institute, 1443 Palmdale Court, West Palm Beach, FL 33411. It is our

privilege to introduce you to these individuals.

Beth Clay is a name familiar to many in the health freedom move-ment. Building her career on the concepts of integrity, compassion, hard work, and deter-mination, she has given over a dozen years to public service in Wash-ington. Ms. Clay played

a powerful and key role in representing the citizens’ interest in areas such as alternative medicine (including alternative cancer research and treatment), pediatrics, medical injury, FDA regulation, conflicts of interest, health care disparities, disease prevention, integrative medicine and more.

From 1998 to 2003, Ms. Clay served as a Professional Staff member on the Committee on Government Reform with Chairman Dan Burton and subsequently a Senior Professional Staff Member on the Subcommit-tee on Human Rights and Wellness. The Government Reform Committee is the largest committee in Congress with the broadest oversight reach across government agencies. Working with Chairman Burton, Ms. Clay coor-dinated 29 Congressional hearings, many of which had an emphasis on the importance of dietary, lifestyle and alternative approaches to healing. She led the investiga-

tion that uncovered the epidemic rise in autism rates and the very real possibility that environmental influ-ences —including vaccine injury, heavy metal exposure, and chemicals exposures— are related to the recent dramatic rise in the United States. The rates jumped from 1 in 10,000 children around 1950 with autism spec-trum disorder to 1 in 70 boys by the age of 8 years, newly announced this month.

Since entering the private sector, Ms. Clay has been working tirelessly to promote health freedom and to protect DSHEA. This year, Ms. Clay lobbied for, and through her unique efforts won, priceless statements (11/18/09) from Chairman Tom Harkin and Senator Orrin Hatch in the markup of the potentially dangerous FDA Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009. These state-ments are worth millions in the future of the Dietary Supplement and Herbal Industries of America.

As long as Chairman Harkin and Senator Hatch are alive and in office, these statements will help protect DSHEA from Codex. The statements were recorded and will be published to make their intent clear.

The Intent of Congress to the FDA and the CourtsSenator Hatch’s statement said in part:“…when we update our current food safety system,

we must protect current laws that have solid consumer protections. One of the laws that comes to mind is the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA).”

“…like you, Mr. Chairman, I too have recently heard from some of my constituents that they are con-cerned that standards adopted by the United Na-tion’s Codex Alimentarius Commission will restrict their ability to purchase dietary supplement prod-ucts in this country, so I echo your statements and look forward to working with you and the other sponsors of the bill to make it absolutely clear that access to dietary supplements is governed by laws established by Congress, including DSHEA, and not by Codex standards.”

Beth won an impossible victory. None of this success

in protecting DSHEA from the Codex forces would have been pos-sible without Beth Clay’s leadership and hard work. Beth is now a Senior Vice President with Capitol Strategy Consultants.Clinton Miller is a remarkable individual who has tirelessly worked in representing

all of our most fundamental health interests for over 50 years. Dr. Brian Clement has a relationship with Clinton that goes back over 30 years – when Clinton worked to stop a major attack on alternative medicine by defeat-ing the Quackery Act.

Clinton Miller is currently the Health Freedom Lobby-ist for the Health Freedom Fund. From 1962 to 1989, he served the National Health Federation (NHF) as Lobbyist, Vice President and Executive Director.

Clinton is the father of the Informed Consent Amend-ment of 1962. Congress enacted the amendment he proposed, which required scientists performing medical experiments on humans to get their informed consent. Until then medical experiments were being performed on tens of thousands without their knowledge or con-sent. He authored and successfully lobbied unanimous enactment of The Proxmire Vitamin Bill of 1976. It pre-vented the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from putting most high potency vitamins on prescription as urged by the American Medical Association.

As Chairman of the Utah Anti-Fluoridation Commit-tee, he helped keep Utah the least fluoridated state in America for more than 60 years. As Chairman of the National Anti-Fluoridation Committee, he helped kill all national compulsory Fluoridation Bills in the 1960’s.

He works closely with Beth Clay as they collaborate to optimize their strategies to win these complex battles.

Bearing

OvercomingAdrenal

ExhaustionFrancesca MacAaron : New York, NY

On the surface everything in my life seemed fine. I just turned 45 years old and was seemingly in glowing health. I had the quintessential New York life: I was independent, strong, wise and full of humor while manag-ing a successful vegan restaurant. The deeper truth was much different. Hurt and exhausted, I retreated from feeling anything real. Years of bury-ing painful emotions led to a constant state of stress that depleted my body of energy and health. I worked long hours, fueled by coffee in the morn-ing and soothed by wine in the eve-ning. I had many friends yet avoided true closeness. I told wicked jokes, wielded a worldly cynicism, and flirted wildly, affirming myself as a “powerful” woman who needed no one.

n May of 2009, my carefully constructed walls be-gan tumbling down. I remember standing in line at a store when I suddenly lost my balance. I knew

something was terribly wrong, but I somehow leaned against a wall, slid down and fainted. An ambulance brought me to the hospital, where I was given fluids and told it was most likely exhaustion and dehydration, and that I would be alright. When I got home, things rapidly deteriorated. I was so weak, I could barely walk. I couldn’t eat or sleep, feel my hands or feet and my heart fluttered wildly. I felt like I was going to pass out several times each day. I was frightened, because I never experi-enced a panic attack in my life. Instinctively, I did what I could to protect myself. I immediately cut out alcohol and caffeine and made appointments with doctors, among them an internist, a heart specialist and a neurologist. Numerous tests showed nothing abnormal. The doctors offered empty theories, but no concrete answers. Finally, a naturopathic doctor offered the diagnosis of adrenal exhaustion. But through the months of pain and fear, I had realized that underneath the diagnosis lay something much greater than any medical doctor could hypothesize. It was my spirit that needed healing cont’d on p. 47

hat really helped me succeed was my huge thirst for knowledge and love of learning. I attended a lecture by a well-know raw food nutrition-

ist who delivered a message that spoke to my heart. It was almost overnight that I began eating only raw foods. Such a dramatic dietary shift would not be a sustainable approach for most people, but seemed appropriate for my needs. Although I kept experiencing digestive difficulties, I was convinced to stay vegetarian. I started reading every-thing I could about raw diets. Early in my transition, I came across fruitarian and natural hygiene information and attempted to live primarily off blended fruit smoothies with greens. This was when my health, energy, strength, and weight plummeted, and I realized that just because something is not heated does not make it good to eat. I was a six-foot tall, 138-pound man living on fruit sugar. I needed help.

I first met Brian Clement at a YES to Life Festival about an hour from my hometown. He taught me about the problems of eating too much sugar, including fruit sugar, and of the oxidation and destruction that occurs when blending food. His words had a huge impact on my life and health. Thank God! I felt like I had finally found the information I was seeking and I bought all the books, CDs and videos I could get my hands on. It was the best invest-ment I ever made. I began implementing the Hippocrates program as best I could, eventually attending the Life Change Program at the Hippocrates Health Institute . I worked intensely with Brian on deep cleansing methods, fasting on green juice and garlic for a week and flushing my gallbladder. The final piece of the puzzle was getting the exercise I needed, so I joined a gym. During the next 16 months I gained 50 pounds of muscle eating 100 percent raw living foods. I felt incredible!

Once I had my health back, I graduated from the Cana-dian College of Natural Nutrition and spent much time at Hippocrates investing thousands of hours studying natu-ral health. I became a certified yoga instructor and person-al trainer, and was voted one of the top 40 most influential people under 40 in my community of 150,000 people. I currently give lectures and travel throughout North America helping people transition from a meat-based and cooked food diet to a living foods lifestyle. Though I have undergone many highs, lows, fears and doubts, I knew in my heart that embracing a living lifestyle was the an-swer I was in search of, regardless of how others viewed my “extreme” diet. My mission now is to help others see that they too are capable of living the life of their dreams while attaining optimal health. It is possible to change any situation as long as you allow your passion to guide you through the journey. Contact Mark at [email protected] or +1 519 940 3869.

Rawk n’ Roll

Overcoming Weakness and LethargyMark Handy : London, ON

My childhood was surrounded by a nurturing and supportive family, eating what I believed was a healthy diet: whole wheat bread, cold cut meat sand-wiches, hot dogs, and pizza—but no pop—with an occasional few mouthfuls of salad. However, everything changed when I left home for the first time to attend college in 1998. My diet and lifestyle became that of a rock star, with-out the rock and roll. I knew in my heart that my choices were not making me happy and ultimately destroying my health. Strictly for ethical reasons, one day I stopped eating animal products. However, choosing to avoid eating flesh cre-ated a major dilemma about what I was going to eat. I dabbled in macrobiot-ics and a cooked grain and legume-based diet mainly focused on soy, think-ing it was a safe and effective alternate source of protein. My health began to deteriorate right before my eyes. Thus began my journey into the abundance of information and misinformation in natural health, longevity and spiritual wholeness. At 25 years old, I decided to study at Hippocrates. It was indeed a blessing. My level of health increased dramatically to the point where I was able to accomplish anything I set out to. Due to the knowledge and expertise I gained at Hippocrates, I was able to look within myself and find happiness.

I continued taking steroids for almost two years even though it wasn’t helping, but I got progressively worse. The paralyzing pain spread immediately from my feet to my knees, hips, and back—basically all throughout my joints. The timing couldn’t be worse. I was diagnosed with reactive arthritis three days before starting my first job. Recently graduating from school, I was set to begin my career as a nurse. Although the pain was severe, I chose to work about 75 percent of the time. I took the pain drugs at work every four hours just to get through the day. Having a busy work schedule, sometimes I forgot to take the drugs and ended up loading up on extra pills when I remem-bered I missed my scheduled dosage. I became very ill and needed to sit down for half an hour to get myself together and alleviate the dizziness and fatigue. I decreased my work schedule to about half time and decided to find an alternate approach to healing.

The homeopathic doctor insisted that I stop taking the steroids and gave me anti-inflammatory pills, which helped during the summer months, but autumn and winter became very difficult. I read about healthy diets and decided to become vegan. During March of 2007, I read a book written by Anna Maria Clement. I called the person featured in the book who lived in Stock-holm for more information. Interestingly enough, he was Anna Maria’s father. He told me that she was arriving in Stockholm from Florida the following day for a lecture and that she would call me. It was so cool! I attended her lecture with my mother and learned that eating living food was the right way to go. As she spoke to the group, I felt like she was talking directly to me—feed-ing me information that I craved my entire life. It was as if I had been sent an angel to save me.

I was unable to attend the program at Hippocrates at that time, so I conducted my own research. During the summer of 2007, I went to a living foods center in Sweden and learned a lot about live-food nutrition. I knew this diet was working right away because once I started eating living foods the pain dissipated and I was able to stop taking the prescription drugs. I told my doctor about the exciting transition. She didn’t understand my method of treatments and became angry, resulting in conflicts in our relationship. I asked her to respect my decision and assist

me in the process of detoxification. She addressed my issue gravely, insisting that I take an intravenous drug once a month. They use Remicade in Sweden, which supposedly targets inflammatory disorders. Of course, I refused. Then she wanted me to have chemotherapy. I said, “absolutely not!”

I continued eating raw vegan foods and transitioned off the medicine, but was still concerned about getting proper nutrition. Realizing that I must take an active role in my healing process, I signed up for the three-week program at Hippocrates in March of 2009. It was the best decision I have ever made. I called one of my doctors and she couldn’t believe the transformation. She looked at my blood work and was amazed. Although she still doesn’t fully believe in the live-food diet, she was very impressed with the results. I remember one of my doctors saying that my condition was chronic and that I would be on medication for five or ten years, having to increase the dosage each year. It’s been

three years and I feel great!Currently, I’ve stopped taking the

last of my medications and can go back to work at least 50 percent of the time. I’m so happy! I started acupuncture treatments, which also help a lot. I dis-covered that eliminating sweet fruits reduces the level of arthritis. Prior to my visit to Hippocrates, I couldn’t do

anything physical. I couldn’t even dream about exercising, swimming or even going to the sauna. During my stay at Hippocrates, I began to partake in normal activities again, and now, eight months later, I can do practically anything I want. It’s amazing! I have attained a much higher level of peace. I occasionally feel tingling in my fingers because I am still detoxing, but it’s not an issue. I believe that the mind and body are closely connected. Aside from the live-food diet, I know that staying positive will ultimately keep my body healthy and feeling great. A diet based on living foods is the main reason I completely eliminated the pain medications and prescription drugs.

I am so happy and grateful to the profound teachers at Hippocrates, especially Brian and Anna Maria. It’s just an amazing place. My dream is to attend the Health Educa-tor Program at Hippocrates and work there as a nurse and Health Educator. I just love it there!

No Pain, No Meds

Overcoming ArthritisAnna Lindstrom, RN : Uppsala, Sweden

My story begins with a simple eye infection I picked up in 2006. The doc-tor prescribed penicillin and the infection cleared after about a week, but my health got much worse. I was prescribed steroids and pain killers and told I would be healthy in about a month. I continued to take the drugs but some-thing strange happened. Bacteria began to spread throughout my body, fol-lowed by severe pain in my foot five days later. It was terrible! I was bed rid-den for over a month. I went to the hospital but they couldn’t find anything. My intuition led me to believe it was severe arthritis, but the doctors told me it was just growing pains. They wanted to overload me on prescription drugs for the pain, but I refused them and they just gave me pain killers instead.

After getting a fever, I developed reactive arthritis (ReA), not rheumatoid arthritis. ReA is an autoim-mune condition associated with inflammation in

the eyes. It can destroy the cartilage in the joints by attack-ing the immune system, and in most cases it’s caused by a bacterial infection. My health deteriorated and my level of frustration with the medical team quickly escalated. The results of the blood tests I requested were not positive. The

doctors recommended taking more drugs, but again I re-fused and decided to visit a homeopathic doctor, who said I would be able to eat anything I wanted, but to make sure I was taking high quality supplements. I trusted him, yet was not about to eat just anything, so I followed a diet pre-dominantly composed of fish and vegetables. My health began improving with a healthier diet. It was a motivation to keep me pushing forward on my path toward healing.

“The Hippocrates Life Change Program in-spired me to keep push-ing forward on my heal-ing path. It was the best decision I’ve ever made!”

hile giving birth, my blood pressure shot up ex-tremely high and then dropped very low. Again I was told this was quite normal. Electric shocks

pulsed through my body, from feet to head. I couldn’t move my limbs and was overcome with a powerful itch preventing me from concentrating on anything else. After being released from the hospital after three days, I fol-lowed up with my medical doctor, who said to wait three months and that the itchiness should recede. However, after one month the pain became unbearable. I went to a rheumatologist who ran tests and diagnosed me with scleroderma. He only told me that scleroderma is a condi-tion of the skin, and proceeded to prescribe me steroids and an ointment. I researched on my own and learned that scleroderma is a chronic autoimmune disorder character-ized by fibrosis attacking the organs and cells.

My skin became so stiff that I eventually lost the ability to walk, move, get dressed, take care of my newborn daughter or even feed myself, as I couldn’t bring the utensils to my mouth. I was constantly going to the emergency room because the pain was intolerable. They performed MRIs and said there was no cure for this condition. They didn’t know what to do except increase the steroids to 100 mg over the next one to two years. Later, I experienced shortness of breath and was diag-nosed with fibrosis in the lung. I was given inhalers, more steroids and an antibiotic. I was encouraged to visit New York City to see the best rheumatologist there, but he was unable to do anything. The disease became more aggres-sive and I was rushed to Baltimore to another renowned rheumatologist. My case was the worst he had ever seen, and his expertise proved useless.

The doctors prescribed CellCept, an immune suppres-sant, increased the dosage to 3,000 mg, reduced the steroids and increased the prescription drugs. I was on Morphine, Oxycontin and Zanax, which only made my skin tighter. Although I was in my early thirties, I was confused and felt like an 80 year old woman. The doctors were very disempowering, saying things like “There is nothing you can do.” I became a cripple. I couldn’t shower, eat, take care of my children or walk. Amid frustration and complete desperation, I flew back to New York City to be cared for by my sister. I was in a wheelchair and couldn’t function on my own. Everything hit rock bottom at the hospital in Baltimore. My sister was also diagnosed with scleroderma. As she witnessed the horrific deterioration of my body, skin and lack of functionality, she became weak. The doctors told her to prepare for my passing. She was so fearful of becoming like me, that she had a panic attack and checked herself into the ER. They overdosed her with drugs and she passed away due to cardiac failure. My

family never told me she died because they didn’t want me to be upset. They brought me to a nursing home and I checked out after one week. I thought I was going to die there. As my family helped me look for alternative thera-pies, my aunt remembered hearing of Hippocrates. I was so weak that I was unable to check in until two years later. I applied for and received a scholarship in 2007. Attending Hippocrates saved my life.

At the time I wondered, “If the medical doctors cannot do anything, how could Hippocrates help?” I was so angry about the medical industry’s inability to help, but my aunt continued motivating and inspiring me to heal myself. I was anxious before my visit to Hippocrates as I had never eaten vegetables in my entire life, only starch, fast food, chocolate and a lot of junk. I was in a mental fog and couldn’t take it any longer. When I arrived at Hippocrates, I chose to came off all of the drugs at once. The program

took a bit of adjusting to, but was a priceless experience. I learned how to live properly for the first time. I quickly started detoxing in the first week and temporarily felt like a life-

less zombie. During the second week my energy was very low, I couldn’t sleep and I experienced shortness of breath. By the third week things turned around. Learning from other guests, I became more positive. I met a girl facing cancer, with amputated legs and confined to a wheelchair. She quickly brought things into perspective. “How can a girl with no legs and cancer laugh and be at peace?” was all I could think. She was so motivating. Everything changed once I developed a positive mind-set. I prayed, meditated and made peace with all that surrounded me by letting go of anger and forgiving myself and others.

After experiencing the Life Change Program firsthand, I can say that anything is possible once you release the fear and learn to relax, breathe and think positively. I’m currently following the Hippocrates program and eating 100 percent raw and living vegan foods. My energy has increased and now I can move, walk, shop and take care of my kids. I can live again. I’m a new Clara! It’s amazing to have an entirely new outlook on life. I was saved by my own willpower, but it was also about adapting to a new way of life. Hippocrates showed me how to take care of my health in a way that I never thought possible. I live each day as if it were my last and let go of all negativities. As soon as you open up, you allow the healing to begin. I truly believe that eating raw and living foods to promote detoxification is the key to healing. I now help at Hip-pocrates taking care of guests, comforting them and giving them the motivation I received during my visit. Being here is a true blessing.

Overcoming SclerodermaClara Geribon : West Palm Beach, Florida

It was during the pregnancy of my fifth child, around the end of 2003, that I started developing pain beyond anything I had ever felt before. Having already given birth to four boys and expecting a girl, I wondered if it was normal to have such pains. The gynecologist said what I was experiencing was normal, most likely sciatica, and all I needed was rest. But the pain was unbearable and started attacking my nerves, running through my legs, inside the bones, into the pelvis and up my back and neck. My entire body was red and inflamed and everything was swollen. The doctors said I was retaining water and it would eventually subside. Yet the further the pregnancy advanced and the bigger I got, the worse the symptoms became. I intuitively knew something was seriously wrong.

to try a four-week detoxification program with colonics three times a week, herbal cleansing three times a day and shifting from solid cooked foods to organic raw vegan foods, followed by a raw green vegetable juice fast during the final week. I immediately felt great, so I ceased eating cooked foods, alcohol, coffee, dairy, wheat and meat. The raw and living foods and herbs allowed for the release of copious amounts of chemical toxins from my body, along with the emotions directly linked to these toxins and their storage points throughout the body. My mental clarity and physical energy increased by leaps and bounds. I felt like I was 20 years old again! This process culminated in the fourth week with the release of five pounds of mucoid plaque from my intestines and one- to two-foot-long dark strips of hardened, polymerized mucous. This mucous is secreted in the upper intestines to store a grave excess of waste which overwhelm normal elimination processes. It was the best I had felt in decades.

Detoxification and inexplicable day-long crying spells distanced me from my family, especially my wife, and brought on a period of spiritual opening that lasted for months. Every morning I cried uncon-trollably for hours on end, knowing only that it was for the best to release the unbearable emotional pain I held for years. This pain was not caused by anyone, it was only the result of my own unconscious thoughts and actions. During this time, I ate daily meals at a raw food restaurant and began to create the support network of raw-lifestyle friends that help me to this day. I also began taking classes in raw food preparation from raw chef Elaina Love, eventually leading to my certification as a raw food chef.

There were two major challenges in this process: the first challenge was overcoming the opinions of my family and friends. The second was a case of adrenal exhaustion I developed as part of the detoxification process, causing me to fall asleep while driving and even while standing during a weekend seminar where I was speaking. The adrenal exhaustion was quickly corrected by supplements recommended. I lost 35 pounds in four weeks, making me look temporarily haggard and alarming my immediate family. They thought I had lost my grip on reality, as if I embarked upon a suicidal path. Regardless, I knew that I was following the right protocol since I felt amazing. These challenges induced me to focus on the positive aspects of my life in order to manifest my life destiny and highest calling. I felt myself making slow, but sure, progress on my new path. “Take baby steps,” said my therapist.

With time, I felt more stable in this new lifestyle. I was in the highest spiritual state until an unexpected phone call threw me much deeper into my healing than I ever thought possible! I will never forget the shaking voice of my dermatologist’s assistant. “The doctor wants to see you as soon as possible.” The brevity and tone of her voice com-municated much more than the words did. I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach as the dermatologist told me that a biopsy on my wrist showed malignant melanoma. Those words hit me with special impact because I watched my father succumb to the same disease 10 years earlier, pass-ing only five months after his diagnosis. Immediately I was transported back in time to his bedside, feeling sensa-tions of an unfulfilled life sweeping over me. I remember crying out, “I don’t want to die now. I want to live. I just want to live!” I wondered if my new lifestyle was the cause, but I knew in my heart it was a blessing that I elimi-nated my toxic diet nine months earlier. The disease could have swiftly spread throughout my body, as happened to my father. The dermatologist wanted an immediate excision with a large skin graft, but despite the sincerity

and overwhelming certainty of the di-agnosis, I felt in my heart that I should take ownership of my own health. A deep peace swept inside of me; the “peace that passeth all understanding” guided me to seek out alternative and complementary treatment.

I received immediate support from my new friends in the raw food community, and as advised by my colon hydrotherapist, I called Brian Clement of the Hippocrates Health Institute in West Palm Beach, Florida. From the moment I walked through the entrance of the Hacienda building on Hippocrates’ 40 acre facility, I was enveloped in love and peace and I knew I was in the right place. The professional and caring staff took every opportunity to shower me with love and compassion and created an atmosphere of deep rest and relaxation. Dr. Brian Clem-ent’s warm, calm, confident and knowledgeable voice gave me a gigantic psychological boost. I felt the love and sanity of the universe descend upon me as he described the program at the institute and the people’s high success rates achieved by following the Hippocrates protocol. I ex-perienced a side of true medicine which is not the purview of the orthodox medical establishment. It was liberating! He taught me to see any health challenge as a healing op-portunity. My experience at Hippocrates has become the greatest opportunity of my life. I am so grateful to have been in a position to be able to check myself in to such an advanced institution. In an exit lecture, Dr. Clement spoke words that I have remembered to this day: cont’d on p. 51

Overcoming Negativity, Anemia,Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & Melanoma

Curt Powell : Silicon Valley, CaliforniaAt 55 years old, I thought I had it all: a wonderful family, friends, a large home in a prestigious neighborhood, a beautiful car and good standing as a prominent member of the com-munity. My high-tech Silicon Valley career seemed interesting for the last 10 years of my professional life. But beneath this socially approved veneer of success loomed an uneasy dis-comfort. Intuitively, I knew there was much more to life. Something within yearned to go beyond the limitations I placed on myself. Although my ego was deeply satisfied, my soul cried out in anguish.

n quiet desperation, my awakening was borne out of the desire to find the cause of my constant feeling of physi-cal sluggishness, mental fog, anemia and exhaustion. To-

day, many would call it chronic fatigue syndrome, but back then I just wanted to feel as well as I had in my earlier life when I used to jump out of bed in the morning with enthusiasm and excitement for the new day. My body was extremely toxic from decades of consuming polluted foods. I medicated myself with double and triple lattes every hour to remain awake and perform, and soothed life with several beers or glasses of wine to calm myself throughout the day. Without realizing how severe my mental negativ-ity had become, I easily drowned myself in a case of beer each weekend, basically committing a slow suicide. I was addicted to reading about and listening to negative stories in the news.

My healing formally began once I started taking an ac-tive role in the detoxification process. I heard that colon-ics could help one feel less sluggish, and in desperation, I chose to try it. The colon hydrotherapist wisely suggested

Darcel de Sylva for Mimi Marchiori

Milton, Ontario

At 64 years of age, my mother lived alone and didn’t really go out much, ate cereal, milk and canned food and led a sedentary life. Although she was a heavy coffee drinker and a smoker since the age of 10, she was in seem-ingly good health — never facing any major health issues — and felt pretty content with her life. However, one day in 2005 while attending a pig roast, she became extremely ill and decided to go straight to the doctor. Interest-ingly, she had blood work done three months prior to this occurrence and everything came back normal.

ithin hours she underwent surgery removing her descending colon. The surgeon pulled out a tumor three-feet in length and said it was the

biggest he had ever seen. He informed Mimi she needed to attach a bag since they were unable to connect the co-lon to the small intestine during surgery. The doctors told me the tumor was cancerous, but Mimi never found out. I think avoiding the stress of knowing how serious it was helped save her.

Mimi visited Hippocrates for one month after her surgery and followed the Life Change Program for two years, adhering to the lifestyle 100 percent of the time. At Hippocrates she had the opportunity to detox and heal in-ternally, rather than undergoing more invasive procedures. She adopted a really positive attitude and always smiled. Her health dramatically transformed for the better. In 2005, the doctors were able to remove the bag and attach the small intestine to the descending colon. That year she took an 18-day trip to China, lead a hiking group, walked her dog and started preparing green juices and wheatgrass for herself each day. She started becoming more and more active and resilient to any negativity.

Even after the surgeries, the doctors told us it would be a long road ahead, and that at most, she had three years to live. Boy, were they wrong! She’s now 74 years old and stronger and healthier than ever before. I believe it was the combination of living foods that initiated the detox and healed her colon. Now she is sprouting, enjoying life and able to let go of all negativity that surrounded her entire mind, body and spirit. She found a way to generate peace from her heart and heal herself. Positive light is all that surrounds my mother, and we owe her health to the Hip-pocrates Life Change Program.

f course, I took the conventional route first and visited many medical doctors who tried to help. They prescribed the strongest morphine possible,

yet it was not enough. They wanted me to take medical marijuana and I refused. Believing that natural products, like the food, would help, I began taking pharmaceutical-grade enzymes and probiotics, but they didn’t seem to help. The doctor performed an ERCP, using a scope to look inside the digestive system. When there is a blockage, the usual procedure entails placing a stint and repairing the obstruction. The doctor said my system was so blocked

that he couldn’t even go in there. I knew I had to make major changes to seriously improve my health and that is why I went to Hippocrates.

It wasn’t until late October of 2009, during my first visit to Hippocrates, that I began healing. During my stay I lost 20 pounds and transitioned into an organic, raw and green diet. I arrived extremely constipated but the green juice and detoxing changed the situation; I finally had normal eliminations after an entire life of digestive issues. I knew I could get some relief. Now I eliminate two or three times a day without a problem. I owe my vibrant cont’d on p. 51

Turning Within

Overcoming Pancreatic DivisumDavid Lothamer : Lapeer, Michigan

Ever since I was a child I suffered from an upset stomach and I was unable to digest almost anything. It wasn’t until I was about 50 years old that I was diagnosed with pancreatic divisum since birth, which only five percent of the population is diagnosed with and only one percent ever have symptoms. Apparently I was part of the one percent. I experienced a terrible burning sen-sation, like my pancreas was being squeezed and a knife was slowly twisting in my back. I went to the hospital six times in five months with chronic pan-creatitis. I couldn’t bear to live that way any longer, and reaching a breaking point, I was ready to try just about anything to get healthy. At six feet tall and weighing about 250 pounds, I had always been a poor eater and overweight.

y intuition and persistence definitely saved my life. The tests revealed that the tumor mark-ers and liver values were extremely elevated,

so the doctor ordered an ultrasound. Apparently, the liver was full of small tumors. She sent me directly to an MRI, revealing that the cancer had spread to my back and hip. I was told not to walk on my right leg as it could break at any moment, so I used crutches. One week later, I sched-uled my first and only chemo session, soon to be followed by a weekend of acute hip surgery to stabilize my leg. I was completely devastated. I did not want to undergo this invasive treatment, but at the time thought it was the only option to regain my health. On the day of the chemo treatment, the orthopedic doctor sug-gested using radiation to strengthen the bone. Although I had only one chemo treatment, it was a complete di-saster. I lost the skin on my hands, got blisters and fungus in my mouth and developed a high fever. I had absolutely no immune defense and was taken to the ER where the horrific word “crisis” was marked on my door. In November of 2003, the oncologist said I would probably not survive past Christmas nor be released from the hospital.

The doctors wanted to give me “nourishing sugar drinks” in the hospital so I wouldn’t lose any more weight, but I refused their food. I suddenly remembered reading Ann Wigmore’s account of healing herself of cancer by consum-ing wheatgrass, greens and other live foods. I asked my husband to bring me a thermos of wheatgrass juice, spin-ach soup, and green kale soup every day, and it worked! I was released from the hospital after only five days. While the doctors never showed interest with the dramatic improvements in my health, it was the nurses who were astounded and curious about my special thermos drinks.

The doctors said there was nothing more they could do for me and gave me morphine to take home. Obvi-ously not the answer I was looking for, I decided to do my own research. I investigated different approaches using alternative medicine. I decided to go to Germany and have treatments of local and whole body hyperthermia (fever), vitamin C infusions, and Dendritic Cell Therapy. After the daily treatments, I practiced two hours of Chan Mi Gong Qigong and then ate. It was an amazing transformation. After this experience I took Qigong education classes in Germany and Austria. I visited my oncologist in Sweden for an MRI. She gave me a very strange look, and said she wanted to tell me something she rarely told anyone in 20 years as an oncologist: my tumors in the liver had de-creased and some even disappeared with no activity in

the bones. It was incredible!I continued the treatments in Germany and ate accord-

ing to Ann Wigmore’s live-food nutritional recommen-dations as much as possible. My alternative doctor was amazed with the results and said he wished he could start a clinic like that in Sweden. “Great! Let’s do it! I said,” but his response was, “I am just a doctor and cannot do that.” But I knew I could do it. I had been working in the mar-keting field nearly my entire life. I discussed it with my

husband and within six months we had Arkadiakliniken, Stora Waesby in Stockholm open and running. It was a wonderful clinic in a serene place and our patients loved it. The results were amazing and we felt like a family. I continued doing my treatments in the clinic, worked with Chan Mi Gong and gave inspirational talks. Life was really quite beautiful.

For about one year we received a lot of media atten-tion, which was great, until one incident occurred with an oncologist around 2004. He had a patient who recovered in our clinic but decided he did not like our methods of treat-ment. He insisted that the Swedish Socialstyrelse (similar to the US FDA) visit our clinic after already approving our business. We were forced to close on the spot and either file a complaint or appeal within a month, which we did. It was ridiculous. None of the patients we treated had ever filed a complaint. A professor from Uppsala University clinic was chosen as an expert to evaluate Arkadiakliniken. She documented what we were not doing, yet refused to visit the clinic once, saying she had plenty to read on our Web site. Although there were at least fifteen patients in the court room that wanted to testify, we were denied and they ruled in favor of Socialstyrelsen. The court could not give us an answer other than that there were no phase-three double blind studies performed in Sweden. However, looking in PUBMED under cancer and hyperthermia, at least 50,000 studies conducted among many different countries showing the efficacy of these treatments turn up. None of this mattered, as they had already decided to shut us down, marking us a threat to the “School of Medi-cine.” This hit me very hard and I believe that it was the root cause of what later was discovered in my body.

Because I was in “stable” condition, I decided to enter the work force once again by looking at other career opportu-nities. I was offered a position in a spa in Stockholm, Cen-tralbadet, to help organize the therapists and research new forms of treatment. My workaholic-mentality kept me busy non-stop from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. However, I had made no effort to create time to eat well. cont’d on p. 49

Overcoming Stage 4 CancerMajlis Tooming Akesson : Stockholm, Sweden

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992 when I was 45 years old, and decided to have a mastectomy immediately followed by reconstruction. At the time, I was a single mother with a home and company which I managed on my own. After the surgery, my life returned to “normal” rather quickly and without any deeper thoughts of what just transpired. Eleven years later, I felt something was not physically right with me, so I underwent several blood tests, but my doctor found no conclusive evidence of anything unusual. One month later I still had a shaking feeling in my body and returned to the doctor. Again, there was no evidence of anything wrong in my blood. I tried eating salt and sugar thinking it was my blood sugar, and that helped a little. Yet another month passed and I still knew something was wrong. I decided to take more initiative with my doctor and insisted on taking other tests.

Never Give Up

Overcoming Malignant Meningioma and Genetic OsteosarcomaPat Reeves : Kingswinford, UK

Never Give Up

Twenty years under my belt as a nutritional and functional medicine practitio-ner is quite an accomplishment after being diagnosed in 1984 with malignant meningioma, a type of brain tumor, followed by genetic osteosarcoma, or bone cancer, ten years later. I developed a sink or swim mentality as my very existence hung by a thread. I was cautioned that I would survive only a few years with far shorter estimations made over time, but I chose to fight back with every ounce of energy I could muster. I had to make significant changes. I began to heal my body through proper nutrition and self education. I spent many years researching what could be done from many angles and became aware there was much more to understand regarding nutrition as it relates to cancer and other life threatening diseases. I had to rebuild my body’s ability to fight this disease for itself.

S ince I carried the genetic expression for cancer—the demise of my predecessors—I was already following a plant-based regimen. Despite my studying nutri-

tional protocols and all of my applied knowledge, this hor-rid disease continued to take over. However, I knew that an optimal nutritional application was available somewhere, so I continued to explore and experiment. I adopted a vegan diet by the time I was twenty-years-old, and have found greater downsides with the consumption of animal food when seeking true healing. I spent a year detoxifying my body via various means, including Rudolf Breuss’ juice fast. I understood that refraining from solid food causes the body to eat up the diseased area before turning on healthy tissue. Within one year, the brain tumor healed by 75 percent.

Ten years later, when the osteosarcoma was diagnosed, I further employed a pure live-food dietary practice and ap-plied multiple modalities including cleanses, ozone, photo-dynamic therapy, wheatgrass therapy, hyperbaric oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, Reiki, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Qigong, Thought Field Therapy, the Emotional Freedom Technique, prayer and a lot of exercise. For the past twenty years I have eaten a 90 to 95 percent live-food diet and I’m full of life and energy.

I believe that food is medicine and that anyone in this situation can achieve great results once they have the de-sire to change and attain self-healing. There has been such

a gap between orthodox recommendations and nurtur-ing the creation of a self-healing environment within the body, that I wanted to share my story and leave a legacy of hope for everyone in similar circumstances. I have worked on a one-to-one basis with hundreds of patients. Investi-gating personal biochemistry and addressing internal and external stressors are simple techniques which provide a blueprint to success and return people to full health.

It’s actually quite funny now that I think back at what the doctors had told me, “Do whatever you want to in the short remaining time you have left.” I’ve won the World Championship Powerlifting competition, pulling more than triple bodyweight to win in my age group despite serious back and shoulder injuries. I have been a British Powerlifting Champion for twenty years and world cham-pion for five, and have won bodybuilding competitions and competed in marathons and triathlons. Power lifting at the age of 64 on a live-food diet?! In addition, I published my first book, A Living Miracle, which provides firsthand infor-mation for aiding the chronically sick to regain full health.

Ultimately, healing requires the physical, mental, emo-tional and spiritual levels interpenetrating throughout the entire system. Searching for healing on any level is to seek connection with its source and create unity. Regardless of your specific path, I wish you success and enlightenment on your healing journey.

s an open-minded individual, I’d like to consider myself someone that can change drastically over-night. Boy was I right! One day I woke up to a tight

little knot on my lymph node under my jaw. I’ve had a history of swollen lymph nodes in the past, but had never experi-enced anything like this before. There was no initial pain, so I thought it would eventually disappear. Within a week and a half this little knot increased in size followed by intense pain and burning. My administrative assistant, whom I’ve known for quite some time, exclaimed that it was growing larger as we spoke. I immediately dropped everything, drove to the airport, and headed to Hippocrates.

The pain became so intense and excruciating that I made peace with life and was ready to give up. My immune system was so weak that I was unsure of any health turn-around at that point. I think my fast healing and quick recoveryfrom injury is all because I've never taken prescription drugs or medications my entire life. I never even went to the doctor. But going to Hippocrates was different. It was about changing my lifestyle and detoxifying my body.

I’m 58 years old and probably the healthiest I’ve ever been in my life. I owe it all to what I’ve learned at Hippocrates and the miraculous effect of wheatgrass. My first visit to Hippocrates was a three-week visit about fifteen years ago, and my second visit was nine years ago when I stayed for six weeks. Although I entered the program with an open mind-set, I didn’t receive the dramatic transformation that I saw from the other guests. During my third and most transfor-mational visit to Hippocrates in July of 2009, I stayed for 12 weeks and completed a 28 day green juice fast. Additionally, I took wheatgrass shots every two hours for eight hours a day. It wasn’t until this most recent visit that I was able to benefit the most.

My stressful lifestyle keeps me somewhat stuck in unhealthy eating patterns. I’m definitely going to revisit Hip-pocrates soon and get back on track. The staff was wonderful and the food was amazing. I can’t wait to return!

Neil was voted Guest of the Year by Hippocrates staff and received a week’s stay for his motivation and for helping to empower others.

Everyone has a weakness, and mine is being a workaholic. Maybe it is the constant flow of money that keeps me coming back for more, or the leadership role of owning my own business. However, I could defi-nitely do without the seven days a week, always on call, sleepless-nights routine. Owning a trucking business is a very stressful job. I’ve never even taken a Christmas vacation. But I know now that I must slow down.

OvercomingBreast CancerMarie-Christine Lhermitte :

Marguerittes, France

In 1998, at 53 years old, I was diag-nosed with breast cancer. To me, this meant death. My head was swirling with fear and I didn’t know what to do. My gynecologist suggested I take hor-mones without even considering the danger they posed to my health. At the time, I was not very well-versed on nu-trition or health and had never heard about living food. The doctors gave me a choice between chemotherapy and surgery, and I decide on having a mas-tectomy since I did not feel 100 percent confident in the side effects of chemo-therapy, especially when considering the fact that they never know if all the cancerous cells are being killed.

had surgery in 1999 and began investigating the causes of breast cancer and the best way to fight it. I discovered that blue-green algae from Klamath Lake in

Oregon is one of the best antioxidant products. It happens to be the most complete food as well. I took it for several months, recovered very quickly and regained much of my physical and mental energy. As time passed, I heard of a company called Cell Tech that was looking for a distributor in France to sell the algae. I soon started my own busi-ness and distribution site. I attended the Cell Tech August Celebration along Klamath Lake and learned about the wonderful benefits of blue-green algae; I was especially impressed with Viktoras Kulvinskas and John Robbins explaining in detail the impact of nutrition on health.

Since the beginning of my venture, many people in France contacted me to get the algae. I soon met Jacques Pascal Cusin, who was interested in this natural supple-ment. He told me about the Hippocrates Health Institute in Florida, and described the excellent benefits of living food. I wanted to know more about this lifestyle, and in 2000, I attended the Life Change Program. To my amaze-ment, I regained even more energy. I developed such a high level of motivation during my visit. I felt very com-fortable in this wonderful world of support at Hippocrates. I was totally convinced by the Life Change Program and its benefits, willing to share this amazing new way of life along my journey. I decided to organize a French-speaking group, and in 2001 I returned to the Institute with my first group from France. It is enriching to come each year to Hippocrates with a new group of French people, listen-ing to Brian, Anna Maria and different speakers sharing knowledge.

For the past 10 years I have been totally fascinated by the results of a living food diet. I love that Hippocrates is not just a place for those who are extremely ill or have many health challenges, but also for those looking to im-prove their health, nutritional hygiene and illness prevention.

those of Canadian researcher, Dr. Laurens—has shown that consistent aerobic exercise in populations above 70 years old slash cases of dementia by 50 percent, reduce attention deficit disorder by approximately the same amount, and ultimately provide a user-friendly memory bank for the mature population.

10 Insufficient mental exercise is another underestimated cognitive facilitator. Exercising your mind has revealed its extraordinary influence on memory and brain me-chanics. Harvard Medical School highlighted one study that looked at centurions with the classic Alzheimer’s gene that showed no sign of this malevolent disease. Each subject demonstrating exceptional brain function at 100 years old were consistently working on cross-word puzzles, reading, socializing and contributing. In the future, we may eventually realize that the single most important way to maintain the function of this vital organ is to conduct mental gymnastics on a daily basis.Regardless of one’s level of health, the human brain begins

shrinking over a lifespan beginning at the age of 20. This shrinkage was once thought to be attributable to the mass loss of neurons, but now we understand that this is not the case. Most brain loss (in volume) comes from the shrinkage of the neurons themselves as they lose dendrites and axonal connections to other neurons.

On average, the human brain loses about 5 to 10 percent of its weight in volume between the ages of 20 and 90 years old. This amounts to one to two percent loss each decade.

This decline does not appear to accelerate nor advance, showing that it consistently losses the same amount even as we age chronologically. The greatest loss of neurons and brain shrinkage, rather the normal aging process, occurs in the medial temporal lobes, which utilize acetylcholine as a neurotransmitter, and in the frontal lobes, which utilize do-pamine as a neurotransmitter. With normal brain aging the levels of both acetylcholine and dopamine both decline over time. This causes the brain to process some kind of informa-tion slower and for certain types of memory processing to reduce.

Many studies have shown that when the brain loses volume it does not directly correlate with cognitive function. One interesting aspect of such findings is that people with higher education suffer more brain volume loss. In specula-tion, high levels of lifetime education and learning provide a reserve of brain capacity that resist cognitive decline, even though the brain is shrinking more in volume compared to those with lower levels of education.

Recovery is important in every aspect of our lives. From the time we become conscious that our body, its organs and their function need to be maintained and supported, we are obligated to adhere to such principles. Practicing these simple truths, prevents neurological diseases. Each of us is fully and totally responsible in the protection and maximiza-tion of our mechanical parts to ensure that we may create a full rich healthy life of contribution and excellence.

Twelve major precepts to protectand preserve the brain and its function

1 Do not smoke2 Exercise regularly3 Sleep and rest well4 Do not drink alcohol5 Avoid and reduce stress6 Maintain a positive attitude7 Eat organic fruits and vegetables8 Consume less total food/calories per day9 Maintain healthy weight throughout life10 Participate socially and make good friends11 Consistently challenge your mind and learn12 Maintain adequate levels of vitamins and minerals

Brain in the BalanceAvoiding Neural Degeneration by Dr Brian Clement

The physiology of improper brain chemistry has been categorized into distinct areas: the genetic and disease theories. In this article we highlight the importance of main-taining brain chemistry based upon these two scientifically grounded concepts.

enetic theory specifies three major factors in brain health and/or degeneration:

1 Extensive scientific research and studies reveal that premature aging may be in our DNA. At the end of lin-ear human chromosomes are inactive, repetitive DNA sequences called telomeres. These telomeres shorten with each cellular division. When they become too short, they become unkempt and initiate an end to a cell’s division, causing the cell to eventually die.

2 Various key genes on our chromosomes—either up or down—regulate such causing activity or inactivity as we age, which in turn initiates cellular declination and eventual death.

3 Mammalian species tend to have their outside life span determined by the rule of six. In most mammals, if you multiply the time it takes for the mammal to reach neurological maturity by six, you reveal the approxi-mate life span of the species. In humans, for example, it takes about 20 years for the brain to reach maturity; the maximum appears to be about 120 years.

isease theory outlines ten causative reasons for brain decline:

1 First, we degrade DNA and initiate cell death by free radicals—that we cause—from poor food choices, en-vironmental toxins, and ingested and absorbed heavy metals. The more free radicals we create through un-healthy living, the greater degradation of the chromo-somes that cause the brain and all other organs to falter.

2 Low blood pressure is clearly linked to brain degenera-tion due to obvious reasons. The less circulatory activity we have reaching this essential organ, the higher the likelihood of anatomical degradation.

3 Low blood sugar causes brain cell death since glucose is one of the three essential fuels for all cells, includ-ing neurons in the brain. The other two being essen-

tial fatty acids and oxygen. Obviously, when we lack glucose via low blood sugar, lack of this essential fuel precipitates cell death.

4 Although low density lipids (LDL)—known as the bad cholesterol—can be a major culprit in creating poor health when it is chronically too low, it does not allow for the essential fatty acids to be readily available food for brain cells. Although it is a subtle yet fundamental coordination between the so-called bad cholesterol and good fats, it clearly illustrates that it is mandatory in the quest to maintain healthy brain function.

5 Being underweight may appear to be more attrac-tive than being overweight, but not when it comes to the function of the brain. After decades of evidential science, the ratio of those with dementia and other brain-related problems are markedly higher for the skinny than they are for those fitting into a “normal” weight range.

6 Eliminating trans fats from one’s diet (i.e., processed vegetable oils) has proven to be an important way to reduce cell death in the brain. Sticky protein linked to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease is indirectly caused via the consumption of trans fats.

7 Non-nutritive, high caloric diets—that generally cause unhealthy weight gain—spark the reduction of oxygen flow throughout the body as well as to the brain. By restricting this pinnacle nutritional element to the cells, it initially causes lethargy, potential confusion and ultimately the demise of brain cells.

8 Lacking essential vitamins—such as vitamin B12, B6, E and C—is a set-up for the perfect scenario to harm brain function. These basic elements maintain general body-cell health and specifically create strong uncom-promising brain cell function.

9 Inadequate physical exercise is generally not consid-ered a food, yet is one of the most important resources that the brain needs to survive. Many studies—such as

Shrink RapJust the FAQs

By Andy Bernay-Roman and Antony Chatham

I want to believe I’m making the right choice by following the Hippocrates lifestyle, but sometimes doubt enters and I question myself. What can I do about that?Andy Doubts speak the voice of what if? and are fed by fear. When doubts arise, look for the fear and its source. What’s the bottom line here? What am I afraid of? That I’ll die? Suf-fer? Miss out? It’s good to identify and name the fear. When my daughter was about three years old she came into my room one night crying because there was a witch under her bed. I took the rational approach, shining a flashlight under the bed, but that didn’t work. Obviously the witch left when the light was on. So I turned on a night light, left the door half open and played soothing music. Again, it didn’t work. I was at my wit’s end and finally got mad — at the witch! In large letters on a piece of paper I wrote: “NO WITCHES ALLOWED!” and stuck it above my daughter’s head-board. It worked because my daughter didn’t want me to tell her there was nothing to be afraid of. She wanted to feel me as a powerful champion so she could feel safe. Be that cham-pion for yourself. That might mean fine tuning your educa-tion about your condition, taking a stand and finding some fierce energy about it. We don’t need to abolish our fears to be free from them, we just need to feel protected.Antony It makes sense to believe that the body can heal, provided it has the right ingredients and energy available, and that it will have more energy and strength if all the tox-ins and blockages preventing health are removed. The HHI lifestyle encourages these two elements: right nutrition and right elimination of the toxins in both the physical and men-tal realms. Our belief in those two essential components of the HHI program helps us overcome our occasional doubts, especially when someone questions our decisions. Certainly, sometimes we are divided between a professional opinion and a personal decision like in the choice of chemotherapy. It is a very difficult choice to make and stand by. Knowledge of both choices will give us strength.

I believe in the benefits of a raw living foods diet, but I just can’t do it 100 percent. Am I wrong for modifying the approach so I can be more comfortable?Andy It depends on your condition. The path of comfort might not be what it takes to heal. Comfort is not the way to measure whether your choices are right or wrong for you right now. I suggest being intelligent about it. Be as in-formed as you can about your decision. Really weigh the ben-

efits of 100 percent raw with the downside of compromising. I once heard a man say at his Hippocrates graduation, after seeing a dramatic improvement in his blood work from just three weeks earlier, “I can live with my discomfort with this new way of eating right now, but I can’t live with the pros-pect of not living.” When Brian and Anna Maria suggest that you do this program 100 percent for a certain period of time, take them seriously. Antony It is important to be comfortable, but that does not mean that we can do whatever we want to by compromising our health for comfort. We could start with whatever level we are comfortable with, and then expand our comfort zone to reach our goals of optimum health. I personally believe in the spirit of the rule rather than the letter of the rule.

Early Christian Vegetarian CommunitiesBy Jim Tibbetts

This story is the first in a three-part series delving into the early Christian communities and the evidence of their vegetarian life-styles. The next part looks at the Jewish tradi-tion and diet, written by Paul Nison, while the third, authored by Dr Brian Clement, explores the diet of a raw vegan in one of these early communities.

uring the time of early Christianity, different sects practiced different lifestyles. The Encratites were early Christian ascetics. The word Encratite is de-

rived from the Greek word for self-control, which alongside love, joy and peace, is a fruit of the spirit. The latter part of the second century in Mesopotamia saw the rise of a Jewish-Christian, vegetarian Encratite community founded by Tatian, a pupil of Justin Martyr (born 100 AD). Tatian played an important role during the beginning of the early Church, and would have known the Apostle John or his followers.

With the fall of Jerusalem in 70 CE came the destruction of the Temple and the disappearance of priestly slaughterers. The community at Qumran, associated with the Dead Sea Scrolls, appears to have already disappeared. But documen-tation proves that there were others involved, as well: the Nazirites, Rechabites, Essenes, Therapeutae, and Zakokites. A central trait of some of these Jewish ascetic groups was abstinence from eating meat, celibacy, fasting, and other forms of privation, which also marked the ascetic regimen. However, vegetarianism was considered the prominent symbol of the ascetic life. Many scholars and modern-day experts recognize that in order to fulfill the laws of the Torah, the vegetarian lifestyle is the ideal. Certain Jewish-Christian groups abstained from particular foods, including the Encrat-ites, Ebionites, Marcionites, Manichaeans, and Priscillianists. Some of the members of such communities considered Jesus a vegetarian, while others claim that Saint Peter ate only bread, olives and herbs. However, there is solid evidence that James was a vegetarian. According to the early Christian his-torian Hegesippus of the second century, “James, the brother (technically a cousin) of the Lord, succeeded to the govern-ment of the Church in conjunction with the apostles. He was holy from his mother’s womb; and he drank no wine nor strong drink, nor did he eat flesh.” All of these groups lived

in the same general area of Galilee, Nazareth, and the Dead Sea. They all practiced similar beliefs and ideals; they were neighbors but they were also friends. Jesus lived, ate, and taught with these early communities. In addition, almost all of his disciples and followers came from these groups, some of which were founded on a plant-based diet.

During the time of Jesus, there were three major Jew-ish groups: the Sadducees, the Pharisees and the Essenes. The Essenes were forced to leave Jerusalem about 50 years before the time of Jesus because they did not believe in or practice animal sacrifice. Instead they offered fruits and veg-etables as offerings to God. One of the earliest groups of the

Essene community is identified as the community at Qum-ran. Writers, such as Philo, Pliny, Dio Chrysostom, Josephus, Hippolytus and Epiphanius, discuss the Essenes within their texts. The Jewish historian, Josephus, claims to have spent time with the Essenes at age 16 (c. 53-54 AD). Both historians Philo and Josephus agree that the total number of Essenes was over four thousand and that they lived in many cities in Palestine and in some villages and near the Dead Sea. Another early writer said there were around 10,000 Essenes. The Essenes were Orthodox Jews and thus kosher, and some were vegan. Because the kosher laws deal primarily with meat and milk, avoiding these two wouldn’t conflict with maintaining a strict kosher household. Although the Essenes refused to sacrifice animals in the temple, once a year they made offerings of fruits, vegetables and breads.

The Essenes were devoted to the law with a great rever-ence to Moses and a strict observance of the Sabbath. Josephus notes that, “Many reached cont’d on p. 53

Globe-trotting Health Educator Program graduate Jill Swyers

One of Hippocrates’ favorite globe-trotting gradu-ates, Jill Swyers has been promoting health since completing the Hippocrates Health Educator Program in 1998. While inspiring individuals around the world, her journey as a health advocate has taken much dedication and perseverance. Her core strength manifested by overcoming a major health challenge.

or several years, Jill suffered from low energy and felt debilitated, suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, hypoglycemia, Candida and Reynaud’s

disease. Believing her condition was directly linked to her diet, she immediately made improvements. Losing weight and detoxification were her main goals, and after following proper food-combining methods, she lost 44 lbs (20 kg) in six months.

While mindful of her diet, exercising and implement-ing alternative therapies, she studied nutrition, including a three-year naturopathic nutrition course emphasizing the science of living and organic food. Aloe vera soon became her staple healing food. Due to its highly energizing properties, after drinking the juice daily she noticed an increase in vital-ity. Jill also included wheatgrass in her regime to increase her chlorophyll and oxygen uptake.

“My diet consisted mostly of live-food prior to knowing about the Hippocrates program. I had a catering back-ground, yet my practice was not as complete or whole as the teachings at Hippocrates,” says Jill. After completing the three-week Life Change Program, she was inspired to enroll in the Health Educator Program, and upon graduating, took on HHI’s mission to “help people help themselves” through proper nutrition and positive lifestyle changes.

Jill gives group and private consultations on living foods and teaches food preparation in Portugal and the UK, con-ducting at least one two-day workshop each month. She also holds private consultations for those facing health challeng-es or simply wanting to improve their lifestyle. She makes sure her students understand the importance of relaxation

and the use of fresh and organic ingredients.“Fresh green juice is the most important thing for an in-

stant alkaline nutrition rush and energy boost,” says Jill. Dark, leafy green veggies and sunflower and pea green sprouts are among her favorites. She also encourages people to juice daily, if possible with a masticating juicer, and advises to use what you have. For example, your only way of breaking up the greens is with a blender, just add the greens, cover with water, blend, and then strain through a mesh bag.

“I really believe in what I teach and the vast amount of information that Hippocrates offers. The program forever changed my future and allowed me to help others through-out the world. It was an opportunity for me and I am improv-ing all the time; every year I implement something new. You can always find the time to change your life. Make living your priority.”

Beautiful presentation and alluring flavors will have you Om’ing for more!

Om Garden Gastronomical Meditationby Andrew Heimann and Annie Hollingsworth

m Garden is a hidden gem in Miami’s downtown Brickell Avenue and historic Coral Way. The quaint restaurant is simple, clean and inviting. While the

informal décor is cross between a sushi bar and a college town coffee shop, the food is surprisingly elegant both in flavor and presentation.

The menu is full of enticing vegan options, including an extensive list of raw selections. It was difficult deciding what to order, but the staff was eager to assist. The waitress was friendly and well-informed about the menu, explain-ing the ingredients in each dish, and offering surprisingly delightful recommendations.

The meal began with the Chakra Cheese plate and Unity Salad. The vegan cheese dish came first — a subtle, yet flavorful tasty spread of three perfectly textured, raw nut cheeses accompanied by dried fruits, nuts and unusually

O

light and crispy raw crackers. This dish was so enjoyable that we accidentally neglected the Unity Salad when it arrived at the table.

The next course was a nice surprise: the Rainbow Roll is a raw entrée as flavorful as it is visually alluring. The diced cubes of mango matched with the avocado and the figs added a complex range of contrasting flavors and textures without needing much adornment. The balsamic syrup dip-ping sauce was subtle, complementing the cashew paté and balancing the flavors. The side salad is served with creamy honey mustard dressing that pepped the dish. But the Sundance raw pizza stole the show. Though humble in ap-pearance, the multi-layered pizza is a raw extravaganza. From the chewy onion flax crust to the abundance of flavorful vegetables and spreads on top, this dish is so satisfying and felt so good to eat, it’s doubtful anyone would eat the usual dough and cheese pie after trying it.

Saving a bit of room for dessert, the meal concluded with two raw wonders. The Goji Maca Balls are rich and sweet, with a twist of orange that melts in your mouth. The Chocolate Mint Cheesecake was also a pleasant surprise; its refreshing and light texture will have you licking the plate clean.

Overall, it was a memorable meal. Om Garden truly cares about preparing their food with fresh organic ingredients. They know how to create an enjoyable dining experience, initiating a feeling of rejuvenation and satisfaction. Healthful

Healthy BowelsNaturally improve colon health and eliminationby Charles Partito, ND

The underlying cause of nearly all disease is auto intoxication, as noted by ground-breaking holistic doctors, from Joel Robbins and Gabriel Cousens, MDs, to pioneers like Professor Arnold Erhet, and Norman Walker and Bernard Jenson, PhDs. Experts agree that the body reabsorbs toxins in the bowel after elimination. This causes serious toxic buildup and can lead to disease, since much of the toxic waste is unable to fully eliminated due to poor diet choices. Proper bowel management is essential in obtaining optimal health.

juva is an herbal cleansing product that helps in this process. It is free of fillers, binders and synthetic flow agents, and is 100 percent raw, vegan, gluten free and

organic — or made with wild-crafted ingredients. The power-ful combination of natural herbs in Ejuva aids in cleansing the blood, organs, tissue, lymph and intestines. Mucoid plaque becomes loose in the intestine, while mucus-produc-ing glands are nourished to help the plaque break free. Vari-ous herbs are combined to assist and help balance glandular

E

functions, particularly the thyroid, pancreas and pituitary gland. These unique combinations of herbs work directly with the meridians of the body to help assist the movement of energy throughout the body and increase overall vitality.

Ejuva Body Cleanse products combine Western, Ayurvedic and Oriental principles and aid in enhancing the quality of your health and your life. The body can be helped exponen-tially through applying the principles of modern scientific research with the traditions of cleansing the intestine with herbs and natural substances. Ejuva is formulated as one of the most pure, gentle, yet deeply effective herbal body cleanse on the planet. As a result, it is highly recommended by many health icons, including Paul Nison and Brain Clem-ent, PhD, ND.

Easy Does It!Video review: One Easy Thingby Babs E. Keller

Fun, easy to understand and informative, One Easy Thing, offers simple advice for taking positive actions to improve your health. Based upon Hippocrates Health Institute’s mission to “help people help themselves” through education, superior nutrition, detoxification and positive lifestyle choices, the presentation covers a variety of topics including food preparation, skin care, exercise and stress management.

he adorable Linda Frees, a Health Educator Program graduate and former Program Counselor at HHI, shows you simple tips, such as how to make delicious creamy

hemp milk, while HHI codirector Brian Clement expounds upon the benefits of consuming this highly digestible and complete protein. Hemp is an exceptionally rich source of essential fatty acids — one of the most important fuels for the blood cells and the neurons in the brain — and all nine essential amino acids. Linda also shares her favorite nori wrap snacks, soups and salad dressing recipes, while explain- ing how to blend and use a food processor or dehydrator. You will feel like you are preparing living food right in the kitchen with her.

Some other interesting information discussed in the video is the importance of protein as a beneficial nutrient needed for muscle development, blood sugar regulation and brain function. It also discusses how fermented brown rice, con-taining 85 percent bio-available protein, is a great alternative

to whey and soy proteins. Whey protein is actually a waste product derived from the dairy industry, and is considered the main cause of cancerous tumor growths outside of environmental and emotional toxins. While soy protein is inexpensive to make foods from, it is difficult to digest and contains many unnatural estrogens which feed estrogen-active or estrogen-sensitive cancers, like those of the breast and prostrate.

The video outlines simple and inexpensive ways to care for your skin. Daily dry skin brushing is great for exfoliation and for lymphatic stimulation, especially when combined with exercising on a rebounder. You will discover that the perfect facial mask can be made from aloe vera, flaxseeds, avocado and acidic water from an alkaline filter. Also be sure to research, read labels and make sure there are no synthetic chemicals in the skin care products you use, because every-thing you put on your skin is absorbed directly into the body without braking down in the digestive system!

Additionally, Antony Chatham, Licensed Psychotherapist and Wellness Coach at Hippocrates, explains how harboring a negative outlook debilitates the immune system and rec-ommends several insightful stress management techniques. These and other valuable nuggets of information are part of what makes this video a pleasure to watch and learn from!

Codex Breakthrough!, Cont’d from p. 13Our Plan for Going Forward

1 We have defined several major areas which Beth and Clinton will focus on over the next year:

2 Much work needs to be done to preserve the very recent victory won in protecting DSHEA from Codex forces. One part of the work is to create a deeper level of sup-port in Congress so other individuals will step up when Senators Harkin and Hatch leave their posts. There are powerful forces in Congress and the FDA who desper-ately want to kill DSHEA.

3 Major work needs to be done immediately in the area of preserving the rights of small organic farmers as well as organic standards. This includes opposing the efforts to make radiation mandatory as well as adding pesticides to organic foods under the guise of “food safety.”

4 Congress needs to become aware of the threat of GMOs to our health. Efforts to oppose GMOs and create label-ing requirements are critical.

5 Efforts will be mounted to create a new and broad public awareness of these issues. You can hunt through the mainstream media and find virtually no mention of these critical issues. We plan a major effort in this area. This will include focused contacts with media, and enrolling activists and well known people to assist in these initiatives.

6 Travel to CODEX meetings periodically in Europe so we can better monitor what we can expect to deal with in the future.

7 Coordinate the efforts of volunteers to assist in creating public awareness.

8 Hippocrates will coordinate all these new initiatives with Dr. Brian Clement and David Korkosz (HorizonPart-ners.net) acting as overseers of the strategy and the work.

Brief Background on CodexCodex, formally Codex Alimentarius (Latin for food code)

is a rapidly moving legal and political movement driven pri-marily by US and global Big Pharma people. Under the guise of creating worldwide standards for our “well being,” it is

geared to severely limit our health freedoms, affecting many things we consume, like food, nutrients, supplements, etc. Few people are aware of Codex and its impact, as it has been a stealth-like and low-key campaign. Some pieces of this program have been cleverly tacked-on to important pending legislation having little to do with Codex.

Positions Codex is subtly pushing for now or in the future. Some have already been adopted in other countries:

1 Some foods may be irradiated and also have “select” pesti-cides added.

2 Worldwide implementation of unlabeled GMOs into some crops, animals, fish and trees.

3 Unreasonable “standards” and one time registration costs for small organic farmers that could negatively impact or drive some out of business.

4 The maximum allowable levels of some nutrients (e.g., CoQ10, Vitamins A, B, C, D, Zinc and Magnesium) that have positive health impact on the body could be controlled under Codex and be reduced to amounts with potentially negligible impact on human health. At some point, they may only be available with a doctor’s prescription.

5 Animals used for food may be treated with potent antibi-otics and exogenous growth hormones.

6 Some advice on nutrition, including written online or journal articles, could become illegal. This includes Natu-ralNews.com type reports on vitamins and minerals and alternative nutritionists’ consultations.

7 Mandatory use of growth hormones and antibiotics on some food herds, fish and flocks. Some dairy cows may be treated with Monsanto’s recombinant bovine growth hormone.

The reintroduction of some of the deadliest and most carcinogenic pesticides banned worldwide in 1991 by 176 countries, including the US. Seven of the 12 worst-ranked by the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pesticides, like DDT, Hexachlorobenzene, Toxaphene and Aldrin, may be allowed back into the food supply at elevated levels.

Raw Food,Vegan-Friendly

Bearing Witness, cont’d from p. 15 I had always heard amazing stories about Hippocrates in my own vegan organic community, calling it the “Mecca of Healing.” A close friend came to visit me who discovered what I was going through. He had been to Hippocrates numer-ous times and offered me the gift of three weeks at Hip-pocrates! With a concerned look on his face, he said, “If you go, you may hate me for the first few days. But if you commit to the program, it will change your life. Trust me.” I thought he was giving me the gift of a raw food retreat and some time to rest. But what I soon found out was that he was offering me the gift of self-healing.

At Hippocrates, I learned that Love is the most powerful of all medicines. In loving my self, I rediscovered true self-worth. Not the material kind but the type that comes from self-knowl-edge. I realized that someone special in my life had seen it, and was just wait-ing for me to see it for myself. Giving and receiving love unconditionally, as an expression of our shared humanity, moves mountains and heals hearts.

Upon my arrival, I was struck by the simple beauty and peacefulness of the grounds and the kindness and sincer-ity of the staff. At the time, I was so physically exhausted that all I could do was listen carefully to the information to get me safely to my room. The first few days I tried to keep my old routines in place with my cell phone an arm’s length away. Still, I dutifully followed the program, juicing my wheatgrass, chewing my sprouts and being a good “student.” But soon, I began to feel a change. As my body adjusted to life without food or drink as a “drug,” the sweet wheatgrass juice began to taste like sunshine itself. I be-gan to feel my rhythm slow and deepen. I became aligned with the common desire each one of us shares: to be well, to learn, to feel at peace, to heal, to feel connection with the earth and each another. I met someone new everyday. Whether a fellow guest or staff member, each moved me, touched me, surprised me or taught me. Outside of my comfort zone, I opened up to what was truly happening in each moment. Each time I felt myself wanting to retreat back to that old comfort zone, I made a commitment to face the fear and do one challenging thing each day.

A turning point happened during a group therapy session when some very brave women had the courage to speak to me about how they perceived me. There were women from all walks of life, each struggling with specific physical illness or challenges and each experiencing her own shapes and colors of fear. But during that session very little was said about diagnosis. Instead, hearts opened, tears flowed, memories and regrets were uncovered naked

and vulnerable. And there was laughter. The raw diet, full of life and goodness, was cleansing and nourishing my body. This was exactly what I needed. But it’s not just what we put into the body that defines our health; it’s our approach to the entirety of our lives and our willingness to face our truths. At Hippocrates I witnessed many profound healings. While the diet was an integral and vital part of the program, it was the changes each of these brave souls underwent which truly initiated the transformation. It was in that room, telling our “bigger” stories, where my heart began to heal. On that day I knew that in time my body would heal too.

After returning to my usual life in New York, I was deeply changed. It is not always easy to describe the experi-ence of Hippocrates. Many people noticed the change on the outside: I lost weight, I was brown from the sun, my eyes were clear and I had energy. “What did you eat?” was the most fre-

quent question I was asked. “Oh, sprouts and wheatgrass,” I would answer. But the Hippocrates experience is so much more than that. What I truly learned at Hippocrates, I would have to say that I learned to recognize true bravery in others and to acknowledge bravery in myself. I know that true beauty comes from within. I learned that ecstasy can be found floating in a pool under the stars with no thought of setting an alarm for the morning. I learned that one’s elimination habits are a perfectly acceptable dinner conversation. I learned that a raw diet heavily accented with turmeric and cayenne creates a very interesting aro-matic underarm perfume. I learned how to clean wheat-grass stains off the ceiling in the bathroom. I guess you could say I learned to recognize the divine in the mundane.

At Hippocrates, I got back in touch with the natu-ral beauty of my body, in the rhythm of how it works. I learned that daily rituals designed to create harmony and health in life are sacred and deserve our attention as much as anything else we’re doing. I learned to stop trying to save everyone else. The greatest gift you can give another is bearing witness, and walking with them side by side. I learned to reconnect with the source of life. I learned that “nothing tastes as good as being healthy feels.” Our food choices are sometimes powerful expressions of self-love, or self-annihilation. It is an act of self-love to feed our bodies foods that help balance our energy, help our cells and or-gans do their work, and create harmony emotionally. And here’s a little secret: The simple, sun-filled foods are actu-ally delicious! It’s one of my life’s blessings. So what can you do? Find your life’s blessings and let them feed you.

I also learned that we are not alone and we need one

“At Hippocrates, I learned that the greatest gift you can give another is to bear witness and walk side by side with them.”

Powerful Thoughts, cont’d from p. 27 I slipped and began eating fish, chicken and warm food with an oc-casional piece of bread. In 2007 the tumor markers had of course escalated again. It was devastating that in such a short period of time I could destroy my body and mind by not staying present. I immediately stopped working and went to Germany to begin hyperthermia. I also underwent four local chemo treatments through a catheter in my groin at the University Clinic in Frankfurt. I decided to do three treatments, believing that I could shrink the tumor with this approach. Having read about Dr. Simoncini in Italy who used baking soda infusions with great results, I decided to do the same. The tumor markers started to dissipate. However, I was persuaded to do four sessions of local chemo and the tumor markers went up again and would not go down. I did not get back to a raw food diet, which was a big mistake. This taught me to always trust your instincts and never let anyone persuade you to do something you know is not right. Your body knows what is best for you, but you must remember to listen.

I had to get help. I immersed myself in a place where I would be granted a fresh start. I chose to attend the program at Hippocrates. Although it’s been a roller-coaster with many ups and downs, I knew that it was the best

decision I could’ve made. During the heavy detoxifica-tion, I felt weak and strong, nauseous and vibrant, un-able to eat and then hungry. However, by the third week everything changed. Now I only feel vibrant, happy and strong. I am positive that the tumors cannot survive in my healthy body any longer. I am committed to staying raw — although it is a major challenge for me — and avoid all invasive treatments. The massages, psycho-oncology, acupuncture, Qigong, infrared sauna with oxygen, and the rectal vitamins have worked wonders. I met so many won-derful people at Hippocrates and I am sure many of them will be lifelong friends. Anna Maria and Brian Clement, along with their staff, do an incredible job. I am blessed to have been able to spend three lovely weeks in their facility. Hippocrates was a savior to which I am humbly grateful.

I hold speeches for cancer in Sweden and always say, ‘Take an active part in your treatment and healing.’ We are always given choices, but keep in mind that your body is your temple. Nothing physically changes in your body when being diagnosed with an illness or disease, but the brain and thoughts can make everything worse. That is the power of your brain playing tricks with you and your immune system. I can assure you that the body does not change that much in a day but the brain and its thoughts are so powerful that they can make the body feel weak, shutting down the immune system, or if used in a positive way, they can be a pathway to healing. All we must do is acknowledge our own healing potential and make use of this powerful tool!

I strongly believe that my body was telling me that my mission is to open a clinic again in Sweden. I have even found a wonderful business partner, Fia Hobbs, who has been a Qigong teacher, NLP and Simonton therapist for many years. We have started a project together that we will have running by spring. It will be a day clinic, health education center for cancer-challenged persons, or for those who want to their life back on track. Perhaps one day it will be considered a mini Hippocrates! At 62 years of age and after nearly seventeen years of fighting for my health, I feel like I’m 40! When adopting the Hippocrates program, you are capable of achieving similar healing results. It has taken me quite some time to attain not only a healthy lifestyle but a healthy mindset. I couldn’t have done it without Hippocrates and the motivation of the staff, the environment and the guests to inspire me along my journey of healing.

another. We are all connected, from the tiniest insect to the most majestic tree. At Hippocrates, I developed confidence that I can heal myself. Some of the most gifted healers I have ever met work at Hippocrates. Remarkably, in each encounter or treatment with them, I was gently reminded that everything I needed was already inside of me. And I began to co-create my own healing. I have learned to listen to what my body was trying to tell me through the symptoms of illness. And I now feel gratitude for the condition—the illness—that saved my life. At Hippocrates, we are reminded what we already know. We just needed to relearn these healthy lessons and adapt to them, grace-fully. I listened, and I am forever grateful.

Total Detox, cont’d from p. 23 “When you go back home you must be honest with everyone you meet. You must tell the truth.” I have lived by these words ever since.

The daily fare of wheatgrass juice and raw green vegetable juices, sprouts and sea vegetables and delec-tably prepared side dishes soon worked its detoxifying and healing magic, putting me into a higher vibration than I had ever felt before. Every day I bonded more with my fellow guests and with Hippocrates’ wonderful staff, and after three weeks, I experienced a profound sense of inner peace and discovered a strength and courage I had never felt before. Complementary therapies of far-infrared oxygen (breathing concentrated oxygen while lying under a far-infrared array), the intravenous vitamin and mineral therapy, yoga, tai chi, Qigong, dance, drumming, Pilates, weight training, rebounding (mini-trampoline work to stimulate the lymph system), swimming in the ozonated pools, massage, facials, colonics and counseling all served to support and enhance Hippocrates’ core philosophy: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

Soon after, a wonderful surgeon excised the cancer without a skin graft and it has not returned nor spread. For the first time in decades, I was able to commune with my-self to a depth I had not experienced since college. I real-ized that within every moment I had a choice to stay true to myself. I returned to Hippocrates eight months later to take the nine-week Health Educator Program and to help manifest a new profession, focusing on a business plan to develop healing communities. Afterwards, I enrolled in the Raw Gourmet Chef training at the Living Light Culinary Arts Institute in Fort Bragg, California, leading to my current position as managing chef for three one-week re-treats in Malibu, soon to be hosted by Hippocrates Health Institute West and the American Health Institute. It has been a long journey of deep healing and blissful joy that will continue to evolve. I am forever grateful to everyone at Hippocrates for this profound life-changing experience.

Turning WIthin, cont’d from p. 25 health all to Hip-pocrates. At the ripe age of 64, I realized that listening to one’s instinct is the most important thing to do.

I also learned about love, relationships with others and how to reconnect with spirit while attending the Life Change Program at Hippocrates. One of the most memora-ble experiences was during group therapy. It was my first time in a group session and I was unsure how to act until I began listening to others speak. Everyone comes with their unique character traits. I critically listened to two young girls speaking about their relatively small challenges back home. Contemplating on the topic of the day, judgment, I realized just how much I judged others. I tuned my

thoughts into compassion and honesty, completely letting go of all the junk I was attached to. I have opened myself to a new life full of positivity.

Having eaten processed foods and meat my entire life, I knew I had to establish a healthy diet to improve and maintain my health. Getting my digestion normalized was so motivating. I never knew what ‘normal’ digestion was like until I visited Hippocrates. I understood that be-ing a dental technician for over 38 years and working in a highly polluted environment aggravated the symptoms of the pancreatitis. I also recognized that my retirement money would be useless unless I was healthy. So I invested in my well-being by purchasing whatever I needed to stay healthy: a juicer, blender, dehydrator, infrared sauna, oxygen machine for my treadmill, ionizer for water, the H-Wave therapy system—which helped my neck feel its best in 20 years—and all of the prescribed LifeGive supplements.

Since graduating from the program at Hippocrates, I’ve maintained a 95 to 98 percent raw diet focusing on wheatgrass juices, greens and exercise. I plan on attending the Health Educator Program and becoming an advocate of the Hippocrates lifestyle. I believe living such a lifestyle will increase my lifespan another fifteen years. What really works is an affirmation I tell myself, “If you know you’re doing something wrong, change it!” If I can reverse my lifelong symptoms and heal after 64 years of a disease, anyone can. I’ve never felt better in all my life!

Early Christian Vegetarian Communities, cont’d from p. 37 advanced ages over 100 years old.” This important passage illustrates the longevity of a meat- and dairy-free diet, show-ing that many people lived to over a hundred years old most likely because of their diets. The Hunza community has a similar lifestyle to the early Christian communities. Many of the Hunzans live well into their 90s and some live to be over one hundred years old. The Hunzans are about 97 percent vegetarian, yet they do eat some raw goat cheese and goats milk.

The Nazoreans (or Nazareans) were Christian Jews in first-century Jewish Palestine. Jesus typically went by the name, Jesus the Nazorean. Now the Nazarenes are considered part of the Essenes. The name ‘Essenes’ was a larger group, an umbrella for many smaller groups and the Nazoreans being one of them. Jesus developed his ministry in the regions of the Nazarenes because he felt at home with the Pharisees and safe from the hassles. Great crowds followed Jesus as he preached in Galilee where the Nazarenes lived. This explains why his popularity grew rapidly with great multitudes. He chose his apostles from among the disciples in Galilee, many of whom could have been either Nazarenes or Essenes. They were primarily followers of a kosher diet.

The first two issues of the early Church were kosher diet and circumcision. Some of these early Christian communi-ties, like the Encratites, were vegan and believed that Jesus was as well. The Essenes seemed to have disappeared a century or so after Jesus’ death and became followers of The Way. Christianity grew enormously during this same time period. Jesus spent only a week or two in Jerusalem and nearly all of his time in the greater Galilee area where the Essenes were located. Perhaps many of these converts to Christianity came from the Essenes, Therapeutae and the Nazarenes, who were all looking for the coming of the Messiah. Perhaps this is why the Essenes disappeared a century after Jesus’ death, because most of them became the first Christians. Therefore, we can conclude that most early Christian communities were vegetarian, that Jesus and the apostles were part of these communities and that these communities believed Jesus was a vegetarian.
