Interacting with current grad students is a major part of the GARS weekend. One way in which we offer you that opportunity is through hosting. Many current grads have opted to either host candidates for the weekend or to act as “faux-sts” for candidates who have acquired other accommodations in order to provide you with an opportunity to create a Clemson connection. Your host is there to help answer any questions you may have and to help you through the interview process. Beyond hosting, there will be various occasions sprinkled throughout the weekend to talk to current grads, and we encourage you to capitalize on those moments to get a wide range of perspectives on academics, assistantships, and the graduate lifestyle at Clemson. If you have any concerns or questions regarding hosting, please contact Rachel Marten ([email protected]) or Fred Tugas ([email protected]).

Study Abroad ExperiencesRome, Italy by Maria Rodriguez

I spent six weeks interning at American University of Rome (AUR). I had the opportunity to work with the Office of Student Life at AUR. I supported the office with orientation for summer session I. Additionally, I had the opportunity to attend meetings and contribute my knowledge by creating a Housing Booklet that the department

wanted created to facilitate the working relationship between Student Life and the Housing Agencies they

collaborate with for student housing.

My experience in Italy went beyond my work at the university. The experience of ‘living’ abroad, exposure to a different culture and daily challenges developed me personally and professionally. Also, the opportunity to connect with professionals abroad has been invaluable.

Sheffield, England by Crystal Reese

I worked in the University of Sheffield Student Communications department. My goals for that internship were to research how other universities around the world navigated student communications, investigate existing communication channels at Sheffield, assess effectiveness of current methodologies, explore possible implementation of new methodology, and determine ways to measure social media impact. While it was a cumbersome project that honestly intimidated me, I later left the university proud of all had

accomplished. I knew that I would have new experiences while abroad. However, I had never thought of the value in learning the supervision techniques of a different employer under a different student services model, working with students from all over the nation who had various cultural backgrounds and experiences, speaking with professionals who had only heard of US higher education philosophies in textbooks, and representing Clemson University in a country where our scholarship standards are respected

and admired. While I knew the experience would aid in my personal development, I was even more astounded by how much I gained as a growing professional. I learned how to articulate the student development theory we so often rely on in the United States, critically think of the advantages in our student development model versus the advantages in that of a student services model, and adapt to an environment and culture I had never before personally experienced.
