What Is CLEP?

• Nationally recognized credit-by-examination program

• Validates knowledge learned through experience

• More than seven million exams taken since 1967

• 1,700+ colleges administer CLEP, 117 added last year

• 2,900+ colleges grant credit for CLEP exams

• 182,800 exams administered in 2011–12, including over 55,000 administered to military service members

• Exam fee is $80

About the CLEP Exams

Structure• 33 computer-based exams.• Mostly multiple-choice, essays, and listening sections for foreign languages • Most are approximately 90 minutes in length.Scoring• Immediate score reports (except exams with essays).• Exams are scored on a scale of 20–80. A score of 50 is equivalent to a grade of C.• “Rights-only” scoring (no penalty for wrong answers).Development• 600+ faculty contribute to the development of and standard-setting for CLEP.• Standing faculty committees oversee ongoing test development, shape content,

review data, set exam policies.

Who Takes CLEP?

• High School Students– Where AP exams are not available– Home-schooled students

• Traditional College Students– First-year students looking to accelerate their college path– Juniors or seniors who have not met lower-division requirements– Students who are fluent in Spanish, French, or German…Math, Biology, etc.

• Transfer Students– Credit recovery options needed due to accreditation or transfer issues– International students who need to translate their overseas credit

• Adults returning to college– Military service members – CLEP exams are free– Veterans – Depending on benefits, exam fees can be reimbursed– Prior Learning Assessment option for workplace learning

• All students struggling to finance their education

Registration Ticket

• Proof of exam registration/payment– Does not guarantee a seat at the test center– Valid for 6 months, no refunds

• Ticket must be presented at check-in on test day, along with required ID– Ticket ID may be presented via paper copy or

Smartphone• What if the test taker does not have a registration

ticket?– Extra PC in test center or office, if available– Library– Campus computer lab

Walk-ins

• Walk-ins are permitted with iBT testing• No paper registration form will be available or

necessary• Walk-ins will have to register, pay the exam fee and

print their registration ticket via My Account• Encourage test takers to register in advance:

– Messaging on test center website, information sheet, etc.• Send walk-ins to register at:

– PC in test center or test center office, if available– Library– Campus computer lab

Other Fees…

• Test Center Administration Fee– Process remains the same

• Test taker pays fee directly to test center on test day

• Optional Essay – Process remains the same

• Test center orders the optional essay booklet• Test center pays the $10 at time of order• Test center collects $10 from test taker on test day

Future Test Taker Experience

Transition Timeline

Step 1: iBT Contract

• First step in the migration process• No new test center application is necessary• All existing test centers must complete and return an iBT

contract• iBT contract will be one document• Will be sent in waves (one per week) via e-mail

beginning in September 2012

TCA Action Items:– Be on the lookout for additional information– Obtain necessary signatures and return contract

ASAP

New CLEP Test Centers

• Approved test centers beginning on 9/1/12 will be required to complete both eCBT and iBT contracts

• No new test center applications will be accepted beginning 1/31/13

• New test center applications received after 1/31/13:– Application will be processed and held until fall 2013– Test center will be placed into one of the test center waves – Test center will open as an iBT test center between fall 2013-

spring 2014

Step 2: Notification of Migration Date

• Notifications will be sent via e-mail in May/June 2013• Communication will include:

– Required action items which must be completed prior to migration to iBT– Tentative dates for full migration to iBT

• Estimated timeframe for migration: 1 business day, but may vary

TCA Action Items:– Inform your IT department, administration and

test center staff of your migration date– Notify CLEP Technical Support of any conflicts

with migration date immediately

Step 2.5: Confirmation of Migration Date

• Will take place summer-early fall 2013• Will confirm date of migration• Will work with CLEP Technical Support

– Tech Support to provide guidance re: equipment setup

– Will confirm schedule/date for iBT migration

TCA Action Item:– Inform your IT department of confirmed migration

date

Step 3: Transition Period and My Account

• What is the transition period?– Fall 2013-Spring 2014 – Both eCBT and iBT platforms will be available until

your test center migrates to iBT– All test takers will use My Account to register and pay

exam feeTCA Action Items:

-Ensure that your IT/ test center staff is aware of and prepared for migration date

-Ensure that all test takers present their registration ticket, along with required ID to test

Step 4: Certification

• Training will be online and will take two hours • Progress of certification at all test centers will be tracked

by ETS• Lead TCA (formerly MSA) must certify prior to migration

– Rest of TCAs must be certified after migration• Content of training

– How to administer a CLEP exam via iBT– Information about CLEP policies and procedures

TCA Action Item:– Complete certification prior to your migration date

Step 4.5: iBT Go Live

• Migration date has arrived!1. Certification has been completed2. IT staff (if necessary) have been notified3. Readiness check completed and successful4. Migrate to iBT platform5. Deliver iBT exam successfully6. Perform End of Day Process7. Uninstall eCBT software
