Annual Report 18
“You and
Loughlin provide
a window of
opportunity for
young people...”
Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School | The Clermont Fall 3
Dear Alums and Friends
of Bishop Loughlin:
It’s my pleasure to report back
to you on a wonderful year made
possible through your generous
support. Once again our seniors
did well;
• 100% graduated with
Regents Diplomas
• 22% earned Regents
Diplomas with Distinction
• One senior earned a full
scholarship to Brown
• Two will be Lasallian
Scholars at Manhattan
College, majoring in
engineering
• Another senior is attending
at the US Naval Academy
• 97% are college bound
This is an extraordinary level of
accomplishment for an inner city
secondary school. The Schott
Report tells the alternative story
when a young person does
not have access to a quality
education. In this parallel world
only 27% of African Americans
graduate from high school. You
and Loughlin provide a window
of opportunity for young people
grossly underserved by the
educational structures available
to them. In our Lasallian view
an education that provides for a
young persons success in this
world is salvific.
This year and moving forward
Loughlin has committed
to strengthen its academic
programming. We added an AP
Environmental Science course
to the curriculum and this in the
2011-12 academic year we are
adding an AP Physics course.
The result will be to have one or
more AP courses in each of the
academic disciplines. Through
our Admissions Director we are
recruiting a freshman class that is
stronger academically. Scholarship
and grant-in-aid allocations
support this effort. Currently 55%
of our students receive some
form of tuition assistance with
an average award of $3200.00.
Your generosity helps to keep a
Loughlin education accessible to
students and their families
The entire school community is
very proud of the Cozzi-Murray
Performing Arts Center and
Lancer Music Studio, which
opened in April. Since moving
in, students have taken over
the space with instruments and
other tools of the trade. Both
instrumentalists and vocalists
have been recorded, resulting in
great insight and improvement.
The director of the program is
spending the summer learning the
computerized console for mixing
and controlling sound so no time
will be wasted come September.
Some of our more recent alums
have dropped in to admire this
new addition to our venerable
facility and have offered rave
reviews. The center will play a
significant role in our recruitment
efforts this fall.
In June, the Board of Governors
endorsed our strategic plan. This
summer, my administrative team,
the Principal, Admissions and
Development Directors as well as
the Directors of Individual Giving
and Marketing/Communication,
has spent time crafting action
plans to implement the plan’s
broad goals strategies centered
on finance, development, facilities
and programs. All these efforts
are directed at achieving the goals
articulated in the strategic plan:
Making Loughlin sustainable for
the long term and the school of
choice for the families we serve
and would like to serve.
Your support continues to be a
great source of encouragement
and hope which allows the Board
of Governors and me to move
forward with confidence.
Live Jesus in our hearts.
Sincerely,
Bro. Dennis Cronin,FSC

Bishop John Loughlin Council Luncheon
This year’s Bishop John Loughlin
Council Luncheon was held on
December 4, 2010 at Giando’s on
the Water in the Williamsburg section
of Brooklyn. This year’s event was
all about our some of our greatest
assets- our students and the alumni
whose generosity keeps Loughlin
thriving. Christmas music welcomed
our guests as they entered the room,
performed by Meghan Deberry ‘11
on the violin, Grace Brancale ‘12 on
the flute, and songs sung by Jessica
Concepcion ‘11. Andrew Paige ‘11 and
Melissa Tropnas ‘12. They expressed
their gratitude to our alumni for the
quality Lasallian education they
shared at Loughlin. Armand Keller ‘11
produced a video story on a day in
the life of a Loughlin student. Several
other students hosted the afternoon,
sharing their Loughlin experiences,
their plans for the future, and their
gratitude with alumni and supporters
in attendance. Brian Connolly ‘73,
Vice President of Loughlin’s Board of
Governors, emceed the event keeping
all in focus, moving the program along,
and ensuring an upbeat tone. This
event also launched a new initiative
called the “Save a Student” Campaign.
This program targets 9th, 10th, and
11th graders with academic potential,
with the goal of providing financial
assistance to their families so that they
may continue attending Loughlin in the
upcoming academic year.

2011 Lion/Lancer Golf Outing Re-CapBy Armand Keller ‘11
On June 23, 2011, Bishop Loughlin
held its fifteenth annual Lion/Lancer
Open Golf Outing at Middle Island
Country Club. Despite the weather,
145 golfers participated in this year’s
outing. It was a smashing success
thanks to Bishop Loughlin and St.
Augustine alumni and friends.
Even with clouds and gray skies, our
registration area welcomed golfers as
they made their way up the hill from
the country club’s parking area to the
clubhouse, with smiles on their faces
ready to face the day and hopefully
even go home with prizes. Golfers
checked in, picked up their goodie
bags, which contained an assortment
of things such as colognes, lotions,
golf balls, a cooler and more, and
then headed into the clubhouse where
they enjoyed a continental breakfast.
For many golfers, just the joy of
meeting with their old classmates
and receiving their goodie bags made
the day get off to a great start.
The shotgun start was at 10:30 am,
and with it our golfers were off to
their assigned holes and greens to
begin their fun-filled day. As the day
went on, the clouds gathered and it
began to rain. After about a half hour,
the rain subsided and our golfers
headed back out from the clubhouse
to brave the elements once more
with the hopes of completing their
18 holes. Unfortunately, a few hours
later it began to rain again and most
foursomes were only able to complete
12 holes of golf. Although the rain
had dampened their clothes, shoes,
and golf bags, everyone refused to
let the rain dampen the high spirits
of the day. The staff at Middle Island
Country Club moved up cocktails
and dinner an hour earlier with ease
and once our golfers dried off, they
convened in the upstairs dining room.
Throughout the cocktail reception
and dinner student volunteers, most
of whom were 2011 graduates, sold
raffle tickets to participants. During
the dinner ceremony, attendees heard
from John Klemm ’65, Director of
Development, as well as Br. Dennis
Cronin, FSC, President of Bishop
Loughlin. Both thanked everyone
for their continued support of this
event, as well as their support
of the students and teachers at
Bishop Loughlin. Several prizes
were raffled off, including items
such as golf clubs, cash prizes, golf
bags, and alumni merchandise.
We would like to give a special
thank you to our event sponsors,
staff and student volunteers,
and our faithful attendees to this
event. We look forward to seeing
familiar and new faces at our 16th
Annual Golf Outing in 2012!

Bishop McDonell Reunion
On Saturday, April 16 the Bishop
McDonnell High School reunion for all
the anniversary classes was held at St.
Francis School for the Deaf. St. Francis
is the former Bishop McDonnell High
School. We had about 240 attendees.
The day included a welcoming
light brunch of coffee, tea, cheese,
crackers, vegetables and dip.
Bishop McDonnell merchandise was
available for those who wished to
purchase fleece jackets, t-shirts, cloth
bags...all with the Bishop McDonnell
name or logo. Many were lined up to
get merchandise for themselves and
others who could not attend. The
gym was filled with memorabilia from
Bishop’s. There were mannequins
dressed in Bishop’s uniforms and
gym suits, old sweatshirts and school
blazers on display.
Photos were being taken all day by
Rob Munroe, a Loughlin graduate who
is now a wonderful photographer.
Mass was celebrated by Rev. Kevin
Sweeney in the Msgr. Ross auditorium.
This was followed by a welcoming
ceremony with Mary Macchiarola ‘58
as the M.C. Gintare Malinauskaite,
a Music teacher at Loughlin, played
the piano and Loughlin students
led the singing. Doris Jean-Charles,
a graduate of Bishop Loughlin,
now attending Fordham University,
addressed the Bishop McDonnell
women on what it meant to her to
have a scholarship at Bishop Loughlin.
Maureen Moss McInerney ‘66 spoke,
encouraging all of her sister graduates
to contribute to the Bishop McDonnell
Scholarship Fund.
Finally, there was a wonderful catered
dinner held in the cafeteria where
friends and classmates enjoyed the
food and the conversation with women
they had not seen for many years.
Another successful reunion for Bishop
McDonnell!
Bishop Loughlin Welcomes Back Alumni For Its 28th Annual Reunion
On Saturday, October 16, 2010, alumni
came back to their alma mater for their
high school reunion. The day began
with Mass, followed by an anniversary
suite for the Class of 1960, while other
reunion attendees enjoyed an all-class
alumni reception in the cafeteria. The
afternoon continued with a welcome
ceremony. During the ceremony, John
Klemm ’65, Director of Development,
presented a slideshow highlighting
memories from the anniversary
classes that included school
happenings as well as what was going
on in the world during their graduation
year. Each class could be heard
cheering as their year was displayed
on the big screen. The Class of 1960
presented the school with a Class Gift
of $94,535. The Loughlin Band, led by
Louis Maffei, played a medley of songs
from the various decades represented
at the reunion. After a rousing rendition
of the school song, alumni headed to
the cafeteria for cocktails and dinner.
Another successful reunion for Bishop
Loughlin!

Jim Nugent’43 greets the Henderson family who he knows well as Jaylen’11 joins Janele’04 and Ozzie’08 as winners of The Nugent Brothers Award.
Meet the Hendersons
Loughlin has had the unique opportu-
nity to educate generations of young
people. Once such story is that of the
Hendersons. This family has invested
in sending their 4 children to Bishop
Loughlin. Three of the siblings, Janele
‘04, Ozzie ‘08, and Jaylen ‘11, have all
graduated from Loughlin. The similari-
ties don’t end there however. All three
also maintained perfect attendance
while attending school from their
formative years. If that wasn’t enough,
they have all been stand-out students
while attending Loughlin, representing
Loughlin as excellent student athletes.
While Janele led the Lady Lions in
basketball, Ozzie and Jaylen excelled
in track and field. As juniors, they all
received the James Bonilla Award,
which honors two juniors who have
added to the high school experience of
others by their participation in athletics
and other extracurricular activities.
During their respective senior years
in Loughlin, Janele, Ozzie, and Jaylen
were all awarded the Nugent Brothers
Award. This award honors the athletic
achievement of John ‘40, James ‘43,
and Robert ‘47 (deceased) Nugent and
is given to two seniors who exemplify
Christian character and outstanding
athletic achievement.
The youngest of the Hendersons,
Christian, is on track to fill the big
shoes his older siblings have left for
him to fill. Christian will begin his junior
year at Loughlin this fall.

A dedication ceremony for the
Cozzi-Murray Performing Arts Center
& Lancer Music Studio was held on
Sunday, April 10th. At the opening,
students performed for an audience of
alumni from Bishop Loughlin, Bishop
McDonnell, and St. Augustine High
Schools.
Michael Murray ‘63, and his wife Jane,
a Bishop McDonnell alumna, for
whom the center is named, maintain
a strong connection to their alma
maters. “These schools were very
good to us in terms of our growth and
our development,” he said. “One of
the things that Bishop Loughlin and
Bishop McDonnell taught us is to help
others. And what better way to give to
others than to give to the high school
that taught us those values.”
Jim Flaherty ‘65, St. Augustine High
School was the master of ceremony.
He serves on the board of governors
for Bishop Loughlin and volunteered
to help raise money for this project.
Nearly 100 alumni from St. Augustine
donated and raised $150,000.
“The logic behind this was to provide
a music facility that existing students
can take advantage of for their musical
talent and to give Bishop Loughlin a
recruiting edge,” he said.
“I can’t even begin to explain to you
the honor that it was to play at the
opening,” said Alexandria Guy ‘11, se-
nior. “And just listening to the alumni’s
stories made me feel like I was part of
something amazing.”
Loughlin now hosts the Brooklyn
Philharmonic student competition for
high schools throughout Brooklyn.
This year, vocalists from Bishop
Loughlin received third place in the
competition. Louis Maffei, chair of
the arts department believes that the
new space will help current music
program expand. He would like to invite
professionals to use the center and
in exchange teach students. Another
plan he has for the center is to record
music with students from China to
expand students’ experiences.

RENOVATIONSRenovations at LaSalle Hall
The smell of fresh paint and the
sounds of a busy construction
crew echo the empty halls of
Bishop Loughlin’s LaSalle Hall the
boarding program sponsored by
Boys Hope Girls Hope. Renovations
are in motion to restore and give
the dorm rooms a new face-lift,
as well as the renovation of two
additional floors to accommodate
eleven new students this falls.
Bishop Loughlin Memorial High
School in partnership with Boys Hope
Girls Hope Foundation are preparing
to accept eleven more students to
the boarding program this year. The
program was only able to board
twenty-one students in the past. Due
to the success of the program and
the demand to help more qualified
under-served male students, the
expansion at LaSalle Hall became an
issue that both Loughlin and Boys
Hope Girls Hope wanted to address.
With the financial support from
the Loughlin Alumni Association
Foundation and the Peter Jay Sharp
Foundation, the project to expand
housing for more students became a
reality. The foundations contributed
$90,000.00 in donations, which made
the renovations to the third and fourth
floor possible. The school and Boys
Hope Girl Hope can now open the
program to more students in need.
“A boarding program for students who
will thrive in a structured environment
is not only consistent with Loughlin’s
mission, it enhances the mission.
Students can move from a structured,
pleasant living environment to a
structured, challenging academic
environment where the adults,
teachers and residential, share a
common vision which promotes the
students growth and development.
The support of the Loughlin Alumni
and Peter Jay Sharp Foundations
are really extending the reach of a
creative, innovative, and transformative
program.” Brother Dennis explained.
The construction commenced the
day after school was closed for
the academic year. A completely
restored third and fourth floor is in
full construction to make more dorm
rooms available by September. The
project will include new bathrooms,
dorm room expansion and an overall
upgrade to the living space at the hall.
“The construction of the 3rd and
4th floors is moving forward as
scheduled and has an anticipated
substantial completion date of August
26th 2011. Painting and flooring
is under way alongside of framing
and plumbing. No problems have
been encountered and none are
foreseeable,” says the Director of
Maintenance, Gerald Pointing.
LaSalle Hall, erected in 1881, is
a historic landmark, which once
housed Brooklyn’s first three Bishops,
including the high school’s namesake
Bishop John Loughlin. Later LaSalle
Hall was gifted to the De LaSalle
Christian Brothers, who were relocated
in 1932, for the first renovation to
convert the house into dormitories.
Today, the tradition to provide the
best Catholic education of Bishop
John Loughlin and the continued
teachings of the LaSallian Education,
“Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve”, still
resonates through the halls of LaSalle.

CLASS NOTESThomas Henry ’39 (R.I.P.) his family
sent us comments after he passed
away “he always cherished his experi-
ence at BLMHS. It was a very positive
experience for him and he had always
said that. Graduating in ’39, he was
present at his 65th anniversary reunion
(2004). In attendance were four (4) ’39
grads including his best friend, Frank
McDonald. In his living room over the
fireplace hung a photo that Tom was
very proud of including him and the
other three (3) grads from that 65th
anniversary.” (Ed. note: Francis (Frank)
McDonald died June 6, 2011)
John A. Farrell ’40 is 88 years old,
retired, and served as an Air Force
officer 1942-1946.
Ralph Mastoloni ’40 remembers
some great teachers – Brothers Albert,
Anthony, Francis, Thomas, Leo and
Matthew. He has moved to Greenwich,
Ct. as of July 2010.
Francis J. Murray ’41 is approaching
age 88 with reasonably good health,
but had to give up golf. He is looking
forward to a reunion in June 2011 with
his classmates of ’41. He says they
have been doing this every five years
since about 1966.
John G. Sweeney ’41 best remembers
Br. Albert and the tennis team. He
played second doubles. It was a good
experience traveling to Coney Island and
the Bronx on the subway for matches.
This year will be 70 years since they
graduated, and he would like to attend a
reunion luncheon once more.
Lawrence A. Schmidt ’42 (R.I.P.) his
family sent comments after he passed
away “he was retired – spouse Ruth –
8 children – 2 are deceased Kathleen
and Lawrence Jr. Loughlin was a
wonderful experience – great educa-
tion – super classmates and teachers
- Unforgettable.”
Mark A. McGowan ’43 after 60 years
he still has fond memories of Loughlin.
Most of all the Brothers – in particular
Brother James. He remembers Brother
calling him Marcus Aurelius. He had an
opportunity last year to visit Rome and
see statue of Marcus Aurelius on his
mighty steed. Very impressive! Best
wishes to Loughlin.
Francis J. Palamara ’43 says that
his 4 years at Bishop Loughlin from
1939 to 1943 were the years that gave
him the base for the rest of his life. He
learned how to study, how to live with
his fellow man with integrity and hon-
esty and it taught him how to compete.
The next 3 years were service in the
US Navy during 1943 to 1946 – World
War II. Loughlin gave him the prepara-
tion that was invaluable during those
years. He is proud to have been a
founder of the Christian Brothers Boys
Association that was the beginning of
Alumni relations for Loughlin.
Harold Thompson ’43 and his
late wife Virginia have 10 children
– 23 grandchildren and 4 great
grandchildren.
Hugh Horning ’44 has attended five
colleges and universities, but the
school that means the most to him
is Loughlin, when it was an all-boys
scholarship school of the Diocese.
He learned there that you could be a
scholar, be spiritual and still be a man!
Thanks to the wonderful examples and
dedication of the Christian Brothers.
He and his wife were married 60 years.
They had 6 children, 12 grandchildren
and 9 great grandchildren (3 more
on the way). He says they are indeed
blessed!
Gabriel M. Liegey, Jr. ’44 is a Deacon
working at St. Patrick Church in
Fairfield, Vt. He and his wife, Mary cel-
ebrated 41 years of marriage. Thanks
to Lou Castellano he keeps in touch
with some of the classmates of June
1944.
Arthur Bickmeyer ’46 is a “Snowbird”
– 6 months in Virginia, 6 months in

Long Island alums got together in
December at the home of Margie and
Kevin Glynn and had a great time.

working as a ticket taker at Cincinnati
Reds, Xavier U. basketball and U. of
Cincinnati football games.

the field of engineering and lives in a
rural scenic area of New Hampshire.

home in Fort Myers, Fl. Expecting to
reunite at the June golf outing.
Thomas (Tom) J. Healy ’56 is looking
forward to the Big “55” reunion this
year and reconnecting with the out-of-
town classmates. A highlight of every
year is the annual golf outing, perhaps
Tony Giampaolo, Frank Dehler, Ray
Russo and I can improve our standing
in the super seniors this year. Currently
he is President of the Greenwich
Retired Men’s Association, which
involves a lot of volunteer work and is
quite gratifying. Last but not least, he
and his wife Kathie are looking forward
to their seventh grandchild anytime
now!
Phil O’Mara ’56 is fully retired from
college teaching, and has continued
with literary research. This year he
presented papers on crowds and
leadership in Shakespeare and on
brotherly love in the twelfth cen-
tury literature of monastic reform. For
spiritual reading, he has gone back to
“Asking the Fathers” by Astrid Squire,
from 1977. How he wishes that he
could share it again with his wife Joan,
who died in 2009. More than ever, he
is grateful to the Latin and English
teachers at Loughlin and to his friends
of those days. He heard lately from
Steve Batthany, Fr. Patrick Mundy, and
Ed Rigney, encouraging always.
Donald J. Vanecek ’56 is still enjoying
retirement in New Hampshire with
his wife Maryann of 49 years, his
three children and four grandchil-
dren. Highlights are attending the
many sports events his grandchildren
compete in. He sends many thanks
to the good brothers for his wonderful
education at Bishop Loughlin.
Victor R. Basili ’57 is retired from
the University of Maryland, where
he was a Professor in the Computer

to all the fine young men and women
who are presently attending Loughlin.
Rev. James F. Fraser ’57 is now at Holy
Family (Flushing) Parish, after 30 years at
Holy Trinity in Whitestone. He had previ-
ously served at Holy Family from 1966-
1980, and is enjoying being back there
and reconnecting with old friends.
Thomas J. Goodwin ’57 is currently
taking graduate courses in English
literature at Iona College, run by the
Christian Brothers of Ireland. Like to
sing? Email me at tomgoodwin4@aol.
com for information about a male glee
club looking for new members.

more to Loughlin than he can ever re-
pay. You are right Br. Dennis when you
say in your letter “you got it right.”
James Orenga ’58-he is blessed to
be able to contribute to the Loughlin
Scholarship Fund every year. He truly
feels that the education he received
at Loughlin has given him the success
that he enjoys today. He trusts every-
thing is going well and let’s hope we
have a great 2011!
Stephen F. Wallner ’58 is nearly
70 and is in his 47th year practicing
medicine. Every time he thinks he is
ready to wrap it up Brother A. Edward
(A.K.A. “Big Ed) appears before him
and says. “Mr. Wallner, God has given
you a talent to work with the sick and
you must not waste it!” He says he is a
Brother’s Boy and an old soldier and
he recognizes that this is not a request,
it is an order. He replies, “Yes, Brother.
Don’t whack me, Brother. I’ll keep
working.” And so it goes for another
year. Best regards in 2011!
Robert G. Edmonds ’59 is still
enjoying his second career teach-
ing at SUNY Maritime College’s
GBAT department and serving as the
Vice-Chair.

be at the 50th anniversary last October
and to see that the level of student
and teacher continues to be so high is
tremendous.

book of poems entitled “Lifebeats”.

to exotic countries but always is happy
to return to the USA.

in a VA hospital since February”. Agent
Orange caused diabetes 30 years ago
and he is suffering from all the compli-
cations including legal blindness. His
wife asks to “please keep him in your
prayers.”
James P. McLoughlin ’61 says it is
hard to believe that it will be 50 years
since he climbed the stage in the
Loughlin auditorium to receive his re-
gents diploma. He still has his Bishop
Loughlin Student Council metal badge
and a lot of fond memories. He does
not know whatever happened to his
reversible Loughlin school jacket but
he seriously does not think it would
fit. Every now and then he remembers
Br. Basil Stephen who was principal
during his 4 years at Loughlin. Brother
was firm but fair and he thinks he
detected a gleam of pride in his eyes
as he was handed his diploma. He
fervently hopes to see him again!
Robert C. Sloane ’61 is continuing as
an Executive Job Search Coach, as
principal and co-founder of Optimarket
LLC, now in its tenth year guiding
job-seeking executives to find their
next opportunity in the shortest time
possible (www.optimarketLLC.com)
Patrick D. Sullivan ’61 feels fortunate
that he was able to attend Loughlin
when the Brooklyn-Queens-Long
Island Diocese paid the tuition. He
hopes his contribution helps in a small
way to carry on Loughlin’s great tradi-
tions. He is already looking forward to
attending his class 50th anniversary
this year.
Robert Borchert ’62 has been an
ordained deacon since 1982 in St.
Louis, Missouri and is now serving in
St. Jude Parish, Fredericksburg, VA.

seeing Loughlin do well in sports and
academic activities. Students should
enjoy Loughlin, as they often will say
as years go by “those were the best
years of my life.”
Andrew Carney ’62 and his wife Ann
Marie will be celebrating forty years of
blissful married life, thirty-nine of which
have been in Connecticut. They grew
up in Brooklyn and graduated from
diocesan high schools (Loughlin and
St. Brendan’s) and received a great
education. His memories of Loughlin
include Br. Stephen, principal, and
Br. Adrian who taught him Spanish for
two years. Many other teachers and
friends helped him enjoy his Loughlin
years. Continued success to all!

for a pretty good life.
Joseph E. Coscia ’63 says he cannot

38 ½ years retired as Chief of Patrol,
NYPD.
Joseph (Joe) Staines ’63 is look-
ing forward to his 50th anniversary
reunion and he hopes to see many old
friends there.
Br. Vincent J. Adams, OSF ’64 says
although he is a Franciscan Brother,
he has the greatest respect for the
Christian Brothers and lay faculty for
their obvious commitment to their mis-
sion of providing a catholic education
to the poor. Catholic schools do “get
it right”, but while ten catholic high
schools in Brooklyn alone have closed
(one moved to Queens!), Loughlin has
kept its doors open and continues to
maintain its high standards and is a
beacon of hope for the future leaders
of America. He feels that the gradu-
ates should never forget our roots!
Joseph M. Favuzzi ’64 has a second
grandchild, Alexa Marie and feels his
family is blessed when she arrived
this past November. He has met
other BLMHS alums in his retirement

fond memories of meeting his wife
Sheila at an afternoon dance in the
cafeteria when he was 16 and she was
15. That, like the fine education, was
another lasting benefit that he gained
by attending Loughlin.
Michael J. McEnerney ’65 is still
looking down at the ground and not
up at it – having survived a heart
attack at 42 and cancer at 44…wait-
ing for God to send the locusts! He
retired from the IRS and has gone to
“the Dark Side” and represents folks
against the IRS on occasion. Still
golfing and snow birding to his house
in Palm Coast, Fl. He misses Loughlin
where some great men made some
great men!!
Joseph Saur ’65 said seeing Br.
Dennis’ name reminded me of the
afternoon spent in detention. Still a
scientist with Georgia Tech Research
Institute; field is computer science,
specifically, as it relates to command
and control. He has put 9 of his 12
kids through college, and is working
on the last 3!

ate, but is tenacious and perseveres
against the “slings and arrows, and
carries his alma mater with him to the
battle of evermore.” Does not have a
lot of money, but he is still here to give
it. A toast to “slow & steady” who wins

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD
“...the Board of
Governors and school
administration have
defined a Strategic
Plan for Loughlin that
confronts our issues
as a tution dependent,
Urban School.”
Dear Alumni/ae and Friends
of Loughlin:
Loughlin graduation, always a
joyous occasion, was particularly
inspiring this year given the suc-
cess of the Class of 2011. Our se-
niors did themselves, their families
and alma mater proud!! Through
their accomplishments, achieved
through dedication and hard work,
the members of the Class of 2011
are providing motivation and en-
couragement to Loughlin students
coming after them.
Over the last several years,
Loughlin’s administration and fac-
ulty have enhanced the opportuni-
ties and challenges of Loughlin’s
academic program, and our stu-
dents have risen to the challenges:
developing their talents and capa-
bilities, achieving academic suc-
cess and preparing themselves for
the rigor of higher education. The
“human and Christian education”
received at Loughlin prepares our
students for academic success as
well as success in living noble and
purposeful lives.
Inspired by our students and eager
to afford the benefits of a Loughlin
education to generations to come,
the Board of Governors and
school administration have defined
a Strategic Plan for Loughlin that
confronts our issues as a tuition-
dependent, urban school.
The plan aims to attain two goals—
Sustainability
Honoring and extending its 160
year heritage, Loughlin fulfills it
mission well into the future
School of Choice
Students and families Loughlin
wishes to serve have compelling
reasons to make Loughlin their 1st
choice for high school
Important milestones on the
road to Sustainability have been
accomplished through an agree-
ment reached with the Diocese
of Brooklyn to transfer the school
building and adjacent field to
Bishop Loughlin and to entrust
all governance responsibilities
for Loughlin to the Board of
Governors. These actions were
eagerly sought by the Board of
Governors and Brother Dennis,
and we are grateful to The Most
Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio,
Bishop of Brooklyn, The Most
Reverend Frank Caggiano,
Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn,
and Sister Angela Gannon,
Secretary for Catholic Education
and Formation, for their support
in achieving these outcomes and
for their confidence in Loughlin’s
future.
Certainly, there are challenges
to achieving the ambitious goals
set out in the strategic plan. And
the Board of Governors and
Brother Dennis are keenly aware
of dependencies that will influ-
ence our success, key among
them your continuing support for
Bishop Loughlin. Be assured that
your commitment to Loughlin is
necessary to achieving our goals,
and your generosity and support
are critically important to securing
Loughlin’s future. Through your
generosity the work of St. John
Baptist DeLaSalle continues at
Loughlin. Thank you for all you do!!
Sincerely,
Noreen McCartney Haffner,

FINANCIAL SUMMARY
Mission Statement
Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School is a Catholic, diocesan, college prepara-
tory high school that draws its Christian perspective from the faith tradition
of the Roman Catholic Church and the Lasallian tradition of the Brothers of
the Christian Schools. Loughlin fosters academic success, builds character,
develops future leaders, and nurtures a vibrant personal relationship with God.
Loughlin stimulates and supports a student’s quest for intellectual, spiritual,
physical, moral and civic development. Students are challenged to achieve their
full potential, to strive for excellence and to further their education at colleges
and universities. Loughlin students, faculty and staff are committed to an inclu-
sive community that respects diversity in its many forms and values excellence
in scholarship.
Values
Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School values a structured environment as a
prelude to learning, growth, and the development of caring relationships ground-
ed in Christian values. The Lasallian tradition holds central the appreciation of
each student’s uniqueness and views the teacher as a minister of the Gospel.
Loughlin is a community of hope and stability for its students. Hope is fostered
primarily through caring adults sensitive and keenly aware of the struggles and
unique challenges of adolescence as experienced in urban America. Stability
is rooted in good order, clearly proclaimed and justly secured through sound
guidelines.
The curriculum and atmosphere of Loughlin are designed to meet a wide range
of student skills. Loughlin students are encouraged to develop fully their person-
al talents and are given opportunities to use them in service to others. Loughlin
provides an atmosphere where respect for both self and others will grow as
students meet with success, resolve personal conflicts and make responsible
decisions and value – choices.
Loughlin students grounded in a solid education and a unique Loughlin spirit are
expected to have profound respect for all people, to be generous in sharing their
gifts and talents, to make sound choices about the future, and to be positive
contributors to the growth and life of the community.

PLANNED GIVINGCreating a Lasting Legacy
Your planned gift can make a difference at Bishop Loughlin
Planned giving is a unique way to support Bishop Loughlin’s mission while help-
ing you achieve your financial, philanthropic and estate-planning goals.
Planned gifts give back, allowing you to take sizeable income, capital gains, and
estate deductions on your taxes. They can provide income for you and your
family for life. And planned gifts can be much larger than other gifts, so you can
leave a legacy that fits your philanthropic goals. Some options for planned giving
include bequests, charitable lead trusts, life insurance, IRA’s and securities.
If you provide for Bishop Loughlin in your estate planning or other form of
planned gift, you will become a member of the Justinian Society and receive an
archival pin. Br. Justinian, FSC, sixth principal of Loughlin, defended the prin-
ciples and ideals of Catholic education against biased factions in the 1870’s.
For more information, please contact John E. Klemm ‘65, Director of
Development at 718-857-2700 x2254 or [email protected].
Planned Giving information and e-brochures are now available on our website at
www.blmhs.org. (Click on the Donate to Loughlin tab)
Meet Andrew Leary
In late May, Bishop Loughlin welcomed
a new member to the Alumni and
Development team. Andy has more
than fifteen years of fundraising,
development and public relations
experience. Most recently, he led
a foundation for a national nursing
education organization in lower
Manhattan for several years. Prior to
that position, he served as the Director
of Development at La Salle Academy
in Manhattan for ten years. He also
has spent time “in the neighborhood”
at St. Joseph’s College, serving as
their Annual Fund Director.
Andy’s experience in fundraising
and development at La Salle were
impressive as he led an annual
fundraising operation to grow more
than 300% over the course of his
tenure at the school. Andy was
responsible for planned giving, a
student sponsor program, the annual
fund, event planning, online giving, and
many other initiatives at La Salle. He is
excited to join our team and focus on
the development and implementation
of our major gifts fundraising program.
As the Director of Individual Giving,
Andy will be working with the
President, the Board of Governors, the
Director of Development and others
to help Loughlin raise sufficient funds
to guarantee a secure future for the
school. Goals will include continuing
to grow our endowment resources,
meet our capital improvement needs,
and improve our academic program
in a variety of ways. He is excited
to provide opportunities for Bishop
Loughlin alumni, St. Augustine alumni
and Bishop McDonnell alumnae to
support these areas of need.
In in his words… I believe strongly in the unique mission
of Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School. There are
few educational institutions in New York City that achieve
so much with few resources. The generosity of alumni
and friends make it possible for the students at BLMHS
to meet and exceed all expectations and what they thought
possible. I am proud to have a role in this process and I
look forward to meeting the many alumni and friends
who help ensure a successful future. The De La Salle
Christian Brothers have proven that their education model
is second to none, and I am proud to be a part of the living
mission that happens each day at 357 Clermont Avenue.

Why I Give: Stephen Nuccio
Stephen Nuccio, class of 1969,
reminisces about his years at Bishop
Loughlin Memorial High School.
His memories are still beautifully
vivid, of the years spent attending
classes at his alma mater. Stephen
still recaps special school events,
names his favorite teachers and
friends as if he were still standing
next to his locker shuffling textbooks
and preparing for his next class.
“Loughlin provided me with a good
foundation in which I felt I could excel
at anything. I have great memories
from my Loughlin experience.”
Stephen took full advantage of the
classes and activities Bishop Loughlin
Memorial High School had to of-
fer during his four years in school.
He recalls his memberships in the
National Honor Society and the Math
Club, and being a member of the Math
Team, the Student Senate, the Alumni
Club, and the Public Speaking Club.
He also participated on the Student
Council Patrol and with LaSalle
Ministries; but still had time for intra-
mural sports all four years at Loughlin.
After graduating from Loughlin with
honors, Stephen Nuccio attended City
College of New York and graduated
with a BA in Economics and went on
to get his MBA at Baruch College.
“Loughlin was my second fam-
ily. They took care of me.
Sometimes I think too well!
When I went off to college I missed
that family feeling I had with my
teachers and friends. But I was
completely prepared academically
for the challenges faced in college
and I am truly grateful to Loughlin.”
Stephen is leaving an endowment
to Bishop Loughlin Memorial High
School, because he links his suc-
cess and good work ethics to his
Loughlin experience. He has worked
for over 29 years at Guardian Life
Insurance Company but has retired
due to personal disabilities and now
resides at his home in Hicksville, NY.
“I wanted to give to other families
that are economically challenged,
like my family was when I attended
Loughlin. If I can ease the finan-
cial weight for incoming Loughlin
students and their families it will
fundamentally change lives.”
Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School Annual Report 2009-2010 27
