21. Project Proposal of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri

The Jammu and Kashmir Government constituted 5 Member Committee in 1999 and was

entrusted the job of preparing project report for the establishment of a University in Rajouri.

Prof. G. M. Bhat was one of the members. The team held number of meetings with the then

Chief Minister, J&K state (Dr. Farooq Abdullah), Education Minister and Minister of Haj and

Auqaf. The team visited number of places in Rajouri to have first hand information on the

aspirations of the local populace and select the site for the proposed university in Rajouri.

A draft proposal was prepared and debated among the representatives of the Government

(Ministers, Bureaucrats, Prominent educationists and prominent citizens of Rajouri and

Poonch districts). Feedback received during this public meeting was considered during the

final drafting of the project report which was submitted to the government on 7th

October,

1999.

We visited three sites in Rajouri for selection of the site for the proposed university, one

was where the university is now situated (measuring 4200 kanals of land) and the other one

was at Chingus (about 500 kanals) the third one was at Thana Mundi (100 kanals). Keeping

in view the future expansion and geological conditions of the sites, the team selected the

present site for the proposed university.

The project report was submitted to the government for consideration on 7th

October

1999. The last meeting of the team was held at the Ziarat of Baba Ghulam Shah, Thana

Mandi and the Name for the University was suggested “Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah

University of Science and Technology”. The state government accepted the report and passed

the act through legislation in 2002.

Prof. Bhat provided inputs on the selection of the site and contributed in selection of the

courses to be initiated during the first phase in the proposed university.

22. Jammu and Kashmir Energy Research and Training Consortium

The international collaboration between the University of Jammu and overseas

Universities and Eni in the fields of hydrocarbon exploration in new areas of research during

the past three years has lead to formation of Energy Research and Training Consortium for

National and International politics

By 2030 India’s energy demand will have increased four-fold. Where is all this extra

energy going to come from? Who is going to find it for us, our children and our children’s

children?

-the Jammu and Kashmir Energy Institute must provide the answers!

Prof. G. M. Bhat (Principal Convener of the workshop) was nominated Co-ordinator for Jammu

University on J&K Energy Research & Training Consortium.

23. Global Outreach Activity

Children’s Education Programme on Petroleum geology, Global warming and Energy Efficiency

Campaign

Geology Department, University of Jammu organised an International conference on

“Geology and Hydrocarbon potential of Neoproterozoic-Cambrian Basins in India, Pakistan and

the Middle East” in 2008 at the University of Jammu. On the sidelines of this conference,

Children’s Education Programme on Global warming and Energy Efficiency Campaign was

organised. 150 high and higher secondary school children from all the districts of Jammu &

Kashmir state were selected through the Directorate of School Education and were invited to

attend this one-day workshop at Jammu on 19th

February 2009. Dr. Jonathan Craig, Eni Milan,

Prof. G. M. Bhat and Dr. Bindra Thusu delivered lectures on the theme of the workshop

“Climate change, global warming and energy efficiency”. In addition, the students were

introduced to the concept of hydrocarbon exploration, how oil and gas is formed, how to find it

out in the rocks, how to exploit it, what are its by-products, etc. They were also shown the rocks

in which hydrocarbons are formed, stored and the organisms which are the source of

hydrocarbons. In this workshop, scientists from BSIP, Lucknow and Wadia Institute of

Himalayan Geology helped in conducting the practical session. This day-long workshop was

highly appreciated by the students, teachers and the faculties who attended this workshop.

On the request of the schools authorities from across the state, Eni decided to extend this

one-day workshop to the three provinces of J&K. Accordingly, the University of Jammu in co-

operation and support by Eni and MPRG, University College London organised three workshops

in Kargil (19th

July 2008), Leh (22nd

July 2008) Srinagar (19th

May 2009).

In addition, two workshops were also organised in Rajasthan (where Eni has acreage) at

Jodhpur (24th

October, 2008), Jaisalmer (11th

February, 2009).

The Children’s Education programme got lot of support from the Governments of J&K

and Rajasthan. Hon’ble Chief Minister and H. E. Sh. N. N. Vohra, Governor of J&K lauded the

efforts of the University of Jammu and Eni for educating the young minds about Global warming

and Energy Efficiency in J&K. Hon’ble Chief Minister has desired Eni to continue its support in

organising this programme in J&K.

In the background of resounding success and importance of the programme, the higher

authorities of Eni at Milan have decided to launch this Children’s Education Programme at

Global level. The scheduled for 2009-2013 workshops has been made:

Eni International Children’s Education Programme:

2009-2010 West Africa – Ghana (successfully organised)

2010-2013 Bangalore (organised) and Hazaribagh, India (Nov. 8, 2011); Western Africa –

Kumasi (December 11-12, 2012), South East Asia – Indonesia and Papua New Guinea – a joint

initiative between Eni, University College London and the IERT, University of Jammu.

In recognition of the support and proactive role in the Children’s Educations Programme,

the Getenergy Limited, London short listed Eni and Jammu University for International Awards

in two areas: 1) Coach and Mentor of the year award and 2) Corporate Social responsibilty

award. Both the awards were won by Eni/Jammu University through online voting across the

world. These awards were conferred in London on March 25th

2009 at a glittering ceremony.

This has enhanced the profile of the University of Jammu at the International level and has been

requested by Eni to support in organisation of the programme at the international level.

Prof. G. M. Bhat and his team of research scholars and faculty members of the Geology

Department played a pivotal role in organising these workshops in J&K and Rajasthan,

Bangalore, in Accra Ghana (2010), Jharkhand (Nov. 2011) and Kumasi (Ghana) 2012..

24. Research/Academic Achievements and International Collaborations

Discovered the carcasses (skull with the jaws, tusk, rib and limb bones, scapula, vertebra,

etc.) of a giant Elephas namadicus from Upper Karewa beds in Kashmir in September 2000.

Associated with this find were found the stone implements which were used by the hunters for

butchering the animal. This discovery provides the direct evidence of the presence of humans in

an area, only next to Gesher Benot in Israel with identical evidence. This discovery is claimed

by the experts as important as that of Leakey’s in Africa.

Worked on the problem of landslides from geotechnical approach along the National

Highway NH-1A. The outcome of the research activity is being utilized by the BRO (Beacon)

and the State Forest Department, who have been able to control number of slides including three

major slides at km 76 (More Camp) and km 128 (Nashri II), Panthial km 168.

Discovered the plants from Kashmir Himalaya which are the oldest known from

Himalaya so far. The repository is in BSIP, Lucknow. In addition a suit of invertebrate fossils

were discovered from Muth quartzites of Kashmir in 1991 and is housed in the Museum of

Natural History, London. This assemblage of fossils is suggestive of Lower Silurian age for the

Muth Quartzites and the experts are of the view that the fossils described by Reed 1912 needs

revision in the light of the present fossils.

Contributed new insights for the mass extinction at the Permian-Triassic transition

(Mother of all extinctions): evidences from Guryul Ravine in Kashmir and British Columbia:

Paper in Chemical Geology.

Developed major international research, teaching and training collaborations involving

western universities, research institutes and major oil and gas company (Eni, the sixth largest

company in the world)

Page 32: Click for Profile

Established the Department of Geology and Geophysics in the University of Kashmir,

planned the layout of the laboratories and framed the syllabi for M. Sc. courses in Applied

Geology there.

Contributed in understanding “No link between the Panjal Traps (Kashmir) and the Late

Permian Mass Extinctions”

COMMENDATION LETTER

To whom it may concern

I wish to commend Professor Ghulam M. Bhat of the Department of Geology, University of

Jammu as an outstanding geoscientist, an inspirational teacher and a highly skilled administrator.

I have worked with Professor G.M. Bhat over the last three years during which time he has

instigated and implemented a series of highly successful national and international scientific initiatives. These

have included the organisation of major international geoscience and energy conferences in Jammu and Kashmir;

leading international research projects involving wide ranging collaboration with Indian and overseas academic

institutes and commercial enterprises and collaboration with Eni S.p.A., one of the world’s largest multinational

energy companies, on a unique, award-winning schools programme run in Jammu & Kashmir and Rajasthan

states, providing stimulating education on key issues of oil & gas technology, energy efficiency and climate

change. Professor G.M. Bhat has been the driving force behind these initiatives in India from their initial

inception to final implementation. His organisational skills, dedication and phenomenal capacity for sheer hard

work have been hallmarks of his career and have established him as a leading and highly-respected Indian

geoscientist with a strong national and international profile. This is reflected in his ability to engage both fellow

academics and major multinational companies in supporting research and education activities, at all levels, for the

benefit of the University of Jammu, the people of Jammu & Kashmir State and of India as a whole.

Professor G.M. Bhat’s recent and current initiatives include playing a fundamental role in the

establishment, at the Kashmir Energy Workshop in Srinagar in May 2009, of a new ‘Jammu & Kashmir Energy

and Training Consortium’ (ERTC). This Consortium links the University of Jammu and the University of

Kashmir with leading overseas geoscience and energy technology centres, including University College London,

the Durham Energy Institute and the Energy & Geoscience Institute, University of Utah, to provide leading-edge

research and education to develop the indigenous skills required for the future development of both fossil fuel and

renewable energy resources in Jammu and Kashmir State and elsewhere in India. Professor Bhat is the lead editor

of a new ground-breaking book on the ‘Geology and Hydrocarbon Potential of the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian

Basins of Asia’ to be published by the Geological Society of London in mid-2010. He is also a major driving

force behind the building of the new ‘Wadia Museum of Natural History’ in Jammu (to be completed in March

2010) in association with the Natural History Museum of London, plans to develop a ‘Ladakh Heritage Museum’

in Leh and in the organisation of a major international conference on ‘Geothermal Potential of South Asia, with

special reference to the Himalaya’ which will convene in Leh in July 2010. This major conference will draw

together national and international experts in the geoscience, technology, economics and politics of geothermal

energy to define the future development of geothermal power resources in the South Asian region. In preparation

for this event, Professor Bhat is also playing a key role in organising a ministerial level delegation, to include the

Vice-Chancellors of both the University of Jammu and the University of Kashmir, under the umbrella of the

ERTC, to key geothermal research institutes and geothermal power plants in the U.K and the U.S.A in Spring

2010.

Professor G.M. Bhat’s commitment, energy, enthusiasm, scholarship and vision continue to be a

personal inspiration and I am honoured to have the opportunity to work with him.
