Changing the cleaning products such as toilet bowl cleaners, odor control systems, surface disinfectants, and specialty cleaners to environmentally safe products can reduce the effects to the environment while giving your company a competitive edge. Tropical Smoothie offers an alternative for unhealthy meals. Local organic products avoid chemicals present in commercially grown food. Local organic grown foods have more nutrients than commercially grown foods because the soil is managed and nourished with sustainable practices by responsible standards. Organic farming supports ecosustenance. Preservation of soil and crop rotation keep farmland healthy, and chemical abstinence preserves the ecosystem. Agricultural chemical pesticides and fertilizers contaminate our environment; poison our water supply, and destroy valuable fertile land. Buying organic food is an investment in a costeffective future. Buying locally supports local economies and supports viability of local farms while ensuring safe and nutritious food. Going  organic  is  a  new  movement  within  local  communities. Organic  farming  supports  eco-‐sustenance. Buying  organic  food  is  an  investment  in  a  cost-‐effective  future.  Buying  locally  supports  local  economies  and  supports  viability  of  local  farms  while  ensuring  safe  and  nutritious  food.

Tropical  Smoothie  uses  Styrofoam  cups,  which  are  made  from  plastic  polystyrene.  Polystyrene  is  based  on  the  building  blocks  called  styrene  monomers,  so  small  doses  of  chemicals  leach  from  it  and  then  migrate  into  the  drink.  Styrene  is  classified  as  a  possible  human  carcinogen  by  the  EPA  and  by  the  International  Agency  for  Research  on  Cancer.  In  addition  to  the  health  effects,  the  use  of  hydrocarbons  by  the  polystyrene  foam  manufacturer  releases  the  hydrocarbons  into  the  air  at  ground  level;  there,  combined  with  nitrogen  oxides  in  the  presence  of  sunlight,  they  form  tropospheric  ozone.  Polystyrene  foam  is  often  dumped  into  the  environment  as  litter.  This  material  is  notorious  for  breaking  up  into  pieces  that  choke  animals  and  clog  their  digestive  systems.  Polystyrene  recycling  isn’t  “closed  loop”  –  collected  polystyrene  cups  are  not  remanufactured  into  cups,  but  into  other  products,  such  as  packing  filler  and  cafeteria  trays.  This  means  that  more  resources  will  have  to  be  used,  and  more  pollution  created,  to  produce  more  polystyrene  cups.  Alternatives  for  Styrofoam  cups  are  post-‐consumer  recycled  paper,  which  are  renewable  resources.  The  paper  cups  are  biodegradable  when  composted  and  can  be  recycled  at  most  people’s  door.  A  better  alternative  to  paper  cups  is  reusable  cups.  Although  Tropical  Smoothie  already  has  reusable  cups,  an  improvement  could  be  made  such  as  a  larger  decrease  in  the  price  of  the  reusable  cups  or  the  price  of  the  smoothie  when  bought  with  a  reusable  cup.  Paper  and  reusable  cups  are  not  only  safer  for  costumer  consumption,  but  also  environmentally  friendly.

A  new  recycling  program  would  improve  the  energy  consumption  of  Tropical  Smoothie  and  it’s  costumers.  Placing  recycle  containers  throughout  the  restaurant  makes  it  convient  to  cycle  all  common  materials.  The  recycling  bins  should  look  different  from  each  other  and  be  clearly  marked.  The  recycling  bins  should  not  only  be  throughout  the  restaurant  but  in  the  kitchen  as  well,  so  that  it  is  easier  for  employees  to  use  them.  Signs  should  be  posted  to  encourage  costumers  to  recycle  and  should  include  “Do’s  and  Don’ts”  for  recycling.  Recycling  reduces  extracting,  refining,  and  processing  raw  materials  all  of  which  create  sustantial  air  and  water  pollution.  As  recycling  saves  energy  it  also  reduces  greenhouse  gas  emissions  and  helps    sustain  the  enviroment  for  future  generations.

Recycle.  Reduce.  Reuse.
