HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrass-ing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

An Abundance Of Spring CelebrationsChambers of Commerce love ribbon cuttings. They provide us an opportunity to celebrate our members’ accomplishments, and also give a little public recog-nition for the business or organization doing the cel-ebrating. Plus it’s just plain fun to enjoy happy occa-sions! In past weeks we have cut lots of ribbons, at places like F.W. Webb in Ballston Spa, Boho Chic and BPI Piping in Waterford, Foot Care of Clifton Park, Homestead Funding in Halfmoon, Berkshire Ha-thaway Home Services in Saratoga/Clifton Park and Weichert Realtors in Latham. And in the days ahead we will be having even more great celebrations. This Friday, June 5 at 10AM, New York Oncology/Hematology will celebrate its new Clifton Park location off Sitterly Rd, with some of the most state of the art cancer screening and treatment equipment available in upstate New York. A few hours later, the National Bottle Museum in Ballston Spa will kick off the village’s First Friday at 6PM with a ribbon cutting to showcase its newly renovated second floor. Next week, Carson’s Tavern in Malta will host their formal Grand Opening ribbon cutting on Friday, June 12 at 11AM, followed at 2PM by a similar celebration at the new Mom’s Laundromat in Mechan-icville (a couple of hours before the Duck Derby begins). Carney’s Tavern celebrates a re-opening and new ownership (Matt and Stephanie Finnigan)

on Tuesday, June 16 at 3. Then we have a two-for-one on June 17 as Petuske’s Produce celebrates its newly-renovated farm stand in Halfmoon as well as a new one located at Kulak’s Nursery, a short walk from the Sche-nectady Yacht Club in Rexford. Also don’t forget these great events – The Daffodil Dash in Halfmoon (June 6), Charlton Founders Weekend (June 6-7), the opening of the Waterford Harbor Farmers Market (Sundays starting June 7), and the Burnt Hills Flag Day Parade (June 11). For more information visit www.southernsaratoga.org .
