Page 2: Climate change

What is Weather?• specific event or condition that is

happening outdoor at any time of the day.

What is Climate?• describes the total of all weather

occurring over a period of years in a given place. It is the average weather condition of that place.

What is Climate Change?• refers to general changes in climate

patterns including temperature, precipitation, winds, and other factors.

What is Global Warming?• refers specifically to any change in the

global average surface temperature. 3

Some Natural Factors That Have Changed the Earth's Climate in

the Past

4

Page 5: Climate change

Natural Causes:

•Milankovitch cycles

•Change in the sun`s energy

•Volcanic Eruptions5

Climate Change at Present

(Human Induced Climate Change)

6

Page 7: Climate change

Causes:• Burning of fossil fuels

 by industries and manufacturing activities

by transport vehicles by power plants

• Deforestation

• Agriculture and cattle-raising

• Decomposition of wastes in landfills 7

Greenhouse Gases• are certain gases in the atmosphere

(water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane, for example) that trap energy from the sun. Without these gases, heat would escape back into space and Earth’s average temperature would be about 60º F colder.

Greenhouse Effect

• the rise in temperature that the Earth experiences because greenhouse gases trap energy from the sun.

Effects of Climate Change

12

Page 13: Climate change

• On Health-generate temperature-related illnesses-spread of diseases such as leptospirosis, malaria, dengue• On agriculture-crop losses-food shortage-malnutrition• On Water Supplies-water shortage• On Energy-power shortages and blackouts 13

• On Coastal areas-coastal erosion-displacement of coastal communities

• On Plants, Animals, and Ecosystems

-disappearing habitats-coral bleaching

The Philippines`s Response to Climate

Change

15

Page 16: Climate change

•Bantay Kalikasan-has implemented several projects addressing specific, environmental issues at hand. -The goal is to implant in the minds and hearts of Filipinos that taking care of the environment is the path to quality of life, that livelihood does not have to come from environmentally destructive practices. Projects:"Butil Para Sa Buhay“(Grain for Life) "Save the La Mesa Watershed “Bantay Basura - promoted awareness and lobbied

for an effective solution to the solid waste problemBantay Usok- aimed to reduce Metro Manila's

vehicular smoke emissions to acceptable standards.

16

Page 17: Climate change

Bantay Baterya - aims to create a sustained public awareness on the health and environmental hazards posed by the indiscriminate handling of junk batteries, and to recover and reprocess junk batteries in an environmentally safe manner.

Bantay Langis - project for used oil recovery and treatment and raising public awareness

H2Hope - aimed to reforest 1,500 hectares of La Mesa in Quezon City

-is tasked to formulate and implement plans addressing the specific environmental concerns in the villages.

-tasked to establish educational projects such as environmental awareness campaign, clean-up drives and tree planting activities to promote youth partnership in environmental protection and preservation.

19

Page 20: Climate change

•National Greening Program-program undertaken by the DENR to reduce carbon emissions through its reforestation and other tree planting projects, and anti-air pollution programs. • The Climate Change and Clean Energy Project (Cenergy)

-project adopts a multi-pronged approach that is designed to mitigate climate change through the improved utilization of clean and renewable energy in power and transport. 20
