Climate change and Maori
• Climate change is real for Iwi1
• Low-lying coastal areas will in general be most vulnerable to sea level rise2
• Impacts are large, unique and disproportionate to Iwi3
• Paris Agreement is a good thing • Domestic policy is failing (ETS) • The impact of climate change is
getting worse6

Summary
• Paris agreement is a game-changer for New Zealand and Maori on climate change
• Government need to move quick to remove 2 for 1, not tinker with other policy settings and focus on adaptation policy
• Maori have a central and significant role to play in meeting New Zealand’s obligations and commitments under the new Paris Agreement on climate change
• There is a lot to be done to fix New Zealand’s domestic policy with little time to do it to meet new international commitments
• The biggest risk for Maori will be government continuing to move the policy goal posts
• Climate change will present new opportunities for Maori communities (marae) and regions
